Great food, very accommodating and friendly people working there. Affordable prices with a variety on offer for everyone. Highly recommended. Will definitely be going back next time I'm in York.

Went for breakfast and very much enjoyed the coffee, BLT and made to order hot sandwich. Warmly greeted upon entering and very pleasant service. Lots of locals came in while we were there. It’s small but cute and the food is fresh and made with care. Recommended for sure.

We loved this little place so much we ate breakfast there on both days we were in York. The staff were fabulous and the food was great. The breakfast roll was AMAZING! If I ever go back to York I won't be breakfasting anywhere else!

Fantastic little 'foodhouse' just outside of the hussle and bussle of the city centre. Came to Penny's off the back of other tripadvisor reviews and we weren't disappointed! Food was fantastic and the service, superb. We did have to wait a little, but when your breakfast is cooked fresh and from a small kitchen its a small price to pay. Our two girls loved their croissants and breakfast in a roll... I enjoyed my full english breakfast even if my waistline didn't!!!!

We came in on a Tuesday morning for breakfast based on other reviews. Our order took a while to arrive (the cafe was unusually busy that morning) but the food was good value, tasty and hot. The owners were very apologetic about the wait. Definitely worth a look if you are in the area. The lunchtime menu looked good too. Clearly popular with the locals which is always a good sign!

Visited this place for breakfast as was highly placed on tripadvisor. Had to wait 45 minutes for my full English breakfast. When arrived was very good. Was not told prior to placing order would be a delay but heard staff talking to other tables apologising for delay. For 2 drinks and a full English and eggs on toast, came to over £18, so quite expensive. Don’t know how it came to that when my breakfast was £7, coffee just over £2 and my wife’s eggs on toast £4.50, plus a fruit juice. Would of expected some sort of discount for the inconvenience especially as I overheard another table getting some discount for the delay. Some people were also leaving due to the delay.

Very tasty home cooked food. Pleasant family atmosphere and friendly staff. The attention to detail is astonishing. Definitely one to visit.

Enorme tetera y delicioso café. Sin duda volveremos cuando volvamos en junio.

Absolutely great food cooked to perfection. Will definitely return. Would recommend to anyone who likes tasty freshly cooked food. Very attentive friendly staff.

What a lovely place, the staff are great, we spent time talking to Gemma about education and her art. The food was fab, we had a full English breakfast and I drank far too much coffee which was good stuff. Can highly recommend.

Utterly wonderful staff - we popped in for breakfast on a freezing morning, and they let us in early so we weren't stood in the cold. They took special dietary requests, and were just absolutely lovely. Great coffee! Highly recommend, and will be back.

Came here since Wetherspoons closed their kitchen unexpectedly and glad we did. Small and quiet with excellent freshly cooked food. Full English and a Omelette were both very well presented and tasty. A bit more pricey the spoons but rightly so.

Breakfasted here Friday morning. Had to wait for them to open well past the published 9:00 time, but it was worth it. A friendly greeting, an excellent plate full of English breakfast and an ok pot of tea which was a tea bag in a pot, unnecessary really and a pot full of water weakened the tea, but it wasn't too much of a problem. If I was in the area would dine again and ask for less water in the pot.

Lovely people, lovely food at a very reasonable price! The toastie of the day was especially great. Would definitely go back again!

Thank you so much for being a part of my sister's hen party Penny and Caspian! The communication was brilliant right from the booking and the food and night was so hospital, warm and fun. We had the place to ourselves and the food was made for our liking - I asked for burgers and got the best meat and veggie burgers I've ever had. And they decorated the place as well to suit the fact that it was a hen party. All of this for such a reasonable cost. I can't thank you enough you were brilliant!!!!

Brilliant place for breakfast. Came in on a quiet and cold Monday for brunch. Had a near perfect fry up (meat for me, veggie for my friend). Seems like a locals haunt as the staff knew a lot of people coming in. Very good prices, not too far off the beaten path and a huge range of freshly made food. Highly recommend Penny's over any of the chains the other side of the bridge.

I visit this place once or twice a year with my good friend who lives in York, when I come to England. Wonderful food and lovely staff.

Absolutely love this place everytime I visit I feel very welcome and the food is heaven!! Can recommend the quiche and coronation chicken sandwiches made to order- they are by far the best ive had in York. Kind, friendly and smiley staff especially Penny herself!!

Found Penny’s via TripAdvisor and based on reviews just had to go to the restaurant for breakfast. My hubs had a traditional English breakfast and I had a breakfast sandwich. Everything we ate at Penny’s was amazing. The service was quick, Penny and her son were so inviting and friendly. We wanted to go back, but due to our schedule we’re unable to return. I would highly recommend Penny’s for any meal!

Went to Penny's for lunch today and the food was absolutely delicious. The soup in particular was v tasty. £10 for a huge sandwich packed with filling, a bowl of soup and a cappuccino was very reasonable. Would highly recommend.

We stopped off here after walking past on the way in to the centre of York. Absolutely lovely staff who were very good with our 18 month old little girl. The food was fantastic and reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend :)

I started University at York in September and found Penny's during fresher's week. They made me feel welcome and like one of the locals from the very beginning - it's now one of the first places I bring any visitors! Lovely food (loads of veggie options) and super friendly staff!

Very enjoyable breakfast.i had the full English and my wife had the vegetarian breakfast. Great attention to the finer details, such as how you want your coffee and how you prefer your eggs and bacon to be cooked etc.

We discovered Penny's when my daughter went to Uni in York. It's ace. Exceptionally friendly - the staff seem to be on first name terms with all their customers. It's a bit like a traditional East End caff but with a broader menu - we are vegetarian and there's loads of choice. Yesterday we travelled 50 miles from Sheffield just to have breakfast there, which must say something. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Celebrated a friend's birthday at Penny's. It was a special booking, so was open for us during the non-business hours. (Good to know for later, as we will be living in York for the foreseeable future).

We were at the same private birthday party as the previous reviewer Nia7x. Delicious range of vegan food on offer with a nice friendly service. We will certainly be back.

We had an amazing breakfast at penny’s today 19 Nov. This place is a perfect location to chill out and to watch the world go by. Such a lovely friendly place. I would highly recommend. You won’t be disappointed. Thank you for telling us about the Xmas market that’s on it was worth a look around.

We were looking for a good value place to have breakfast and found Penny’s on trip advisor. Service with a smile, we were made to feel welcome as soon as we entered Pennys cafe. You can get anything from porridge to a full English breakfast. My wife and I both had full English breakfast which was absolutely lovely and came with a nice big pot of tea . It filled us up until lunchtime and was really good value for money.

My boyfriend and I are so glad we found Penny's and decided to visit the cafe for breakfast! The cafe was comfortable and had a lovely atmosphere. I had a pumpkin spice latte and one of the specials which was called 'Dom's special' and was amazing! So filling and tasty with lots of avocado and mushrooms and veggie sausages. It was vegan too which was great! My boyfriend had the veggie breakfast which he also thoroughly enjoyed! We left satisfyingly full and very happy we stopped by. The staff were all friendly and attentive too. A great cafe serving great food! Well worth a visit

Tuvimos una recepción amistosa en esta linda y pequeña cafetería y nuestro pequeño Cockerpoo también recibió una gran recepción además de una salchicha. Wanting to get away from the touristy areas of York, we passed this café and decided to give it a go for lunch. We were greeted by a lovely young man and chose a nice table - it's a cosy café - perhaps 12+ covers, though does a lot of take out trade, certainly at lunchtime, as we later saw.

Having tried all the competition, Penny’s has unquestionably the best breakfast in York, for value, taste, and service. Proper authentic English breakfast - and staff let you customise your meal the way you want to have it. Lots of vegetarian and vegan options that my veggie parents said were excellent. Very happy every time I come

In preparing for a visit to York, after an absence of nearly twenty years, I compiled a list of highly recommended places for breakfast. My first port of call was Penny’s and I quickly realised I wouldn’t be needing my list. The food’s great and the prices are very reasonable but what makes this little gem really special is Penny and her team. Whether regular or newcomer, everyone receives a genuine warm welcome and a friendly chat. When it comes to my next visit to York, breakfast is already sorted!

I’ve been meaning to leave a review of Penny’s for a while now. I always visit when I’m working in York (quite frequently). Firstly the food: delicious! The sandwiches for lunch are generous, with a wide selection and well priced. The breakfast choices are to die for! Fantastic sausages and black pudding. The coffee is well made and the cakes - home made and yummy! The salted caramel blondie is lovely.

Very nice spot, good coffee, perfect poached eggs. Penny is a designer - she designed the title sequence for the Terry Gilliam film 12 Monkeys! Had a nice chat with her before leaving. Thanks Penny!

We stopped here for breakfast because it looked so cute and was right by our hotel. Delicious breakfast - and they are very flexible on making your food to order - modifications were not a problem. The food was great - very good quality and like homemade. The staff was the nicest ever - our server (who I think was one of the owners) was such a warm and kind person. Would happily go back here if we are lucky enough to visit York again!

Came across this lovely place en route to my hotel. It was a warm day so a seat next to a large fan was perfect as was the service, atmosphere and food! A little away from the busier areas of York but well worth seeking out. I had a brie, roasted vegetable and chutney panini with side salad and the best slice of carrot cake ever...! Very reasonable prices, friendly staff. Nothing you could possibly fault.

This tiny place is just down the street from our hotel, and we'd passed it many times. We wanted a simple meal, as I wasn't feeling great, and this was just right for lunch. The staff were all cheerful and friendly, and the food was exactly what we wanted. They accommodated my desire for gluten-free food even though their menu didn't list any. And Penny herself customized my serving of ice cream (home made, she said, and certainly GF) with a dash of coffee.

Penny's was happy to open for a group of 8 of us, by arrangement. Excellent all round, ribs were great, service friendly, chocolate brownies very chocolatey! We took our own wine. Well worth a visit.

Pasado este lugar, ya que era por la calle de nuestro hotel. Me gustó el aspecto y fuimos para desayunar. Ambos tenían un desayuno inglés completo con té, café y zumo de naranja. Me encantó todo. El servicio era excelente, la comida era estupenda y no podríamos haber pedido más. Una pena que no estábamos en Nueva York ya que probablemente he vuelto y se asegurarán de que hacer la próxima vez que esté en la ciudad.

Went to Penny's three times in two days we liked it so much. Very welcoming, friendly and helpful staff, delicious food, decent portions, yummy cakes, generous take-out salad boxes. Went there this morning and it was almost full - and all the customers were repeat business, which tells you a lot about a place. Highly recommended.

Veggie folks, don't miss the vegetarian full breakfast - comes with delicious vegetarian sausage! Really great pot of tea and wonderful food - very happy to have found this spot while traveling.

I’ve been to Penny’s a couple of times and boy do they hit the spot. The paninis never fail to please and the freshly baked treats are heavenly.

The reviews suggested that this should be somewhere worth seeking out, but it wasn't. Just your average cafe fare, which was ok, but very overpriced. Nearly fainted when we got the bill. And when you order beans on toast, why don't you get beans ON toast instead of them being separate on opposite sides of the plate!

What a super little cafe. We were greeted by a friendly young man, had a delicious breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice and a gorgeous cup of coffee. Would highly recommend.

I had a breakfast here, everything was Ok but nothing special. The service and coffee was decent but the place is very small and quickly becomes overcrowded whilst people are waiting for take aways. Again, the food was Ok but nothing special, I've had much tastier bacon and sausage. Worth calling in, just don't expect too much.

I went as part a group of five. While the staff was as friendly as other reviews indicated, none of us found either the food or coffee acceptable. The eggs may have been the worst -- greasy, with an odd, not eggy, flavor -- but nothing (not crumpet, not porridge, not even bread) tasted good. And in a town with so much good coffee, it was surprising how bad this coffee was.

We called into this cafe, down Fossgate at lunchtime on Sunday, for a quick sandwich and cup of coffee. We were parked nearby and had been shopping in York centre. Lovely friendly service, we were met by a cheery hello when we opened the door which was a nice touch. Sandwiches were made to order so fresh and generous contents. Lovely coffee too. We liked the fact that it was a unique cafe and not part of a chain or formulaic. A recommended place for coffee or lunch.

Came to this cafe on the 24th Feb for a full English. What can I say, cooked to perfection. No soggy bacon here. Lovely and crisp but not dry. Egg, spot on. Lovely dippy egg . Well what can I say about the black pudding. Scrumdiddlyicous..... the best I have had.

I popped into Penny's one day just hoping for a coffee. Now, I'm a regular! The staff is very friendly and the food never disappoints. I highly recommend the coffee, cajun chicken sandwich, and the BLT. But I've learned you can't go wrong with anything you order!

Wandering round the Fossgate area looking for a breakfast past 11AM. Stumbled into Penny’s and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the breakfast. Definitely an option for our next visit.

We found this place right down the street from our hotel and it was a pleasant surprise. We stopped there for breakfast every morning and the service was very good and the food great. Prices were very reasonable. I would recommend.

We stayed at Hotel Indigo room only and found Penny’s a few yards up the road and we were not disappointed! We both had the full English breakfast which was plentiful and well cooked! Will visit again if in the area!

I came to Pennys on my lunch break with two friends and only had 40 minutes to eat and drink. The staff seemed nice and the inside is quaint and cosy but it is small so everyone can hear your conversation. Our waiter took orders for drinks and took 10 minutes to make a few hot drinks which i coukd forgive because it was fresh coffe. But sadly it took 25 minutes for them to make 3 paninis. The panini was tasty but cost around £5 which seems abit pricey. Overall, it was nice but the price and speed of service was not brilliant.

We visited York this weekend for the Christmas markets and to visit our all time favourite European Christmas-themed shop and fancied a bite to eat. The sheer volume of visitors drove us out of the city to find somewhere and we stumbled upon Penny's quite accidentally - what a lovely little place staffed by the most pleasant and attentive staff.

You can spend half of your lunch hour in here waiting for your order - which inevitably ends up wrong! Great food most of the time - expensive sandwiches with very small fillings.. I have never had such thin beef in a sandwich almost see through!

We returned again last week & as usual the service from Penny & her team was friendly & efficient & the food was very good & reasonably priced.Good range to choose from too.

I booked Penny's Bespoke Foodhouse for a birthday breakfast, as I wanted somewhere not to expensive, but still a nice place, and I pretty much based my decision on the tripadvisor reviews. I'm really pleased I did, because they couldn't have been more accommodating and friendly. There were enough of us to fill the place, and we were a motley crew in varying stages of hangover. However, we had a really lovely breakfast. The food was good, and a great price, with the black pudding especially fresh and tasty. The staff were wonderful, really friendly, and the breakfasts were able to be customised for the vegans in our group. Penny wasn't able to be there but we shared some great communication over booking, etc. They really went out of their way to make it a fun breakfast. Lots of people came to pick up something for their lunch, so we could see how popular it is. It's a lovely little place and I'm sure I'll be back for breakfast.

I came back here for a full english breakfast with my family... It was amazing, the best I ever had! Everything was fresh and cooked at the moment (never tasted such a good black pudding) and the portion was generous (at a cheap price). Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. Will definitely come back

Found Penny’s by chance and popped in for a snack, wonderful place with great service and food. Excellent coffee, huge tea pots, nothing to much trouble, high quality ingredients used and cooked how you ask for it to be done. We will be returning!

This unpretentious and reasonably-priced cafe is situated a fair ways down Walmgate. It's small, and fairly crowded inside, but friendly. The menu is down to earth. Service is good. Coffee is very decent, and priced at only £2 for a mug.

Desde cuando entramos en el personal (Penny) el propietario me hizo sentir muy bienvenido! Señora encantadora y muy acogedor y hablador! Servido por un chico joven. Inglés en 6 libras. 00 wow simply delicioso! La salchicha era tan sabrosa y yo soy quisquilloso con salchichas! La placa como así y todo sin grasa! Simplemente deliciosa y recomiendo encarecidamente que en Nueva York! Felicitaciones también al chef

So we came here for a good old English breakfast and that is exactly what we got. The staff were friendly and service was good, even the price was reasonable. If I lived locally I would frequent this place for breakfast.

The place is small but very cozy with nice staff. We only got a cappuccino and a hot chocolate (very huge and with marshmallows!) but also the English breakfast at other tables seemed amazing! In addition the price are great.. One of the cheapest in town I think

This is a lovely small cafe with friendly staff. The service was good and the breakfast was delicious. They accommodated for us altering the menu and cooked the eggs just how we requested. We where in York for 2 nights and had a full English here both morning's. I would recommend penny's if you are passing definitely.

Called in to Penny's the last morning of our trip to York, and what a result. A quirky little cafe, with very friendly staff, and gorgeous filling food, just what was needed before a long trek around the city. My wife had scrambled egg served on lovely malted bloomer bread, I had what was probably the largest bacon sandwich I have ever had, but it was demolished with haste, a great family run place, definitely going to return.

I've been going to Picalilli's for two years and since the change of ownership last year, the food and service has improved dramatically. A great place to go for breakfast and lunch, highly recommended.

Had breakfast here today (late morning). We had full English, which was served with good personal service and good value. Would have gone back again tomorrow but it is not open on Sunday.

Mi pareja y yo decidimos tener un desayuno completo inglés mientras entrar en Nueva York. Desayuno vegetariano ordenados y desayuno inglés completo. Pedí mi pareja no frijoles y pedimos no tomate. Nos dieron! Sin embargo, no puedo decir nada, ya que no es un problema sólo para dejar algo que no te gusta. Terminé mi huevo y tocino, y la mitad de mi salchicha cuando me di cuenta de la salchicha estaba cruda por dentro. Después de haber comido la mitad de ella me sentía bastante enfermo! Mi compañero intentó hacer el personal consciente, así que no ocurrirá de nuevo y la actitud no era uno que esperarías de un café independiente compitiendo por encargo localmente. Me dijeron que podía no ser crudo posiblemente porque había registrado la temperatura cuando llegó de la parrilla y parecía cerdo! Sé que cuando veo carne cruda, pero todavía seguían en desacuerdo era crudo aunque era empalagoso y rosa. Finalmente solo pregunte mi pareja a pagar y salir, y el personal era entonces bastante sarcástico y me dijo: "Así no pagar por cualquier entonces". Este no era el problema, la conciencia de otros clientes conseguir enfermo parecía ir por encima de las cabezas de los propietarios. Finalmente mi compañero pagado por ella, pero no para la mía y ahora estoy en un viaje de un día, esperamos no desarrollar parásitos. En resumen, si puedes evítalo, hay muchas otras cafeterías en la misma calle.

We happened upon Picalillis, and we were pleasantly surprised. The service was good, with helpful and friendly staff. The full English breakfast was delicious, as was a vegetarian breakfast, and the cappuccino was excellent.

Descubrimos Picalilli al volver andando del centro de la ciudad de Nueva York en de la universidad. Fue un maravilloso descubrimiento para nosotros - dos adultos y dos niños adolescentes, incluyendo uno vegetariano. Teníamos paninis y sopas todos recién hechos y deliciosos. No tienen tartas en esta ocasión pero eran muy tentadoras. Amable, acogedor y servicial personal. Una cafetería con un ambiente encantador hogareño. Santo recomendado.

The homemade chocolate brownies are the best I have ever had - I can throughly recommend them. You will not be disappointed. I will certainly be going to the cafe again for another chocolate brownie when I next go to york

Yo frecuentado Piccallis Walmgate mientras trabajan en la mayoría de los días para el almuerzo, es un café muy limpio y acogedor, con un personal muy amable, la comida es siempre fresca y con mucha variedad. Yo lo recomiendo, pruébalo, no te defraudará! Yo ya no trabajo en Walmgate pero cuando llame a la zona.

We went to Picalillis for a family brunch the day after my younger brother's graduation at his recommendedation. Decorated very nicely inside, a little quirky but refreshing, food was lovely, cakes were delicious, good tea and staff were very friendly and polite!

I come here fairly regularly and not once has it disappointed! The food is always exceptional - love the full English - as are the staff!

I visited this place with my Family and was really suprised with how nice the Staff here was. It has a great atmosphere too, with really good meals. Would recommend any day.
