We booked in advance for the 9 course tasting meal and it did not disappoint except perhaps for the asparagus! It was well balanced and can be held up high with many Michelin starred restaurants. The service was very good with each course well explained. We shared the wine paring as it would have been too much wine for us. The tables are well apart from each other. Enjoyed the amuse bouche too. Would recommend.

Wonderful meal in Hudson’s last Friday evening. We were staying at the Grand and booked Hudson’s for our first night. Nine course taster menu and each course was a delight. Service was superb and wine list extensive. We also witnessed a proposal and acceptance of an engagement it was lovely. Would highly recommend if visiting York and you can book if not staying at the hotel. Compliments to the chef and his team. Keep up the good work. We will go back.

My boyfriend and I have never had a tasting menu before but it was honestly so so so good. We had the 9 course with the wine pairing. The food was absolutely amazing. So much flavour and variety. The wine pairing was perfect too. Some of the best flavours and textures I’ve ever eaten. The atmosphere in the restaurant was very intimate but so relaxing and exactly what we wanted from the experience. The staff were fantastic especially Nick. His way of reading each table to know exactly what they want from the dining experience was so clever and his knowledge of the food and drinks was so impressive and he was so friendly and charming. The nine course tasting menu was very good - not likely to pick up a star in the near future based on this visit, but not many people would leave disappointed. But what should have been a lovely romantic date night away from the kids turned into an exercise in how not to do service: our cocky, know-it-all waiter just couldn't help himself but show off about the strangest things and it meant every interaction was through gritted teeth on our part. Claimed to have worked at The Grosvenor in Chester but thought the chef there was Sat Bains - nope! - and then went on to slag the place off anyway. Claimed to have chosen all the wines for the pairing despite only having been there four months, but didn't know that the house pour champagne had been changed from Perrier Jouet to Moet. Was quite happy to stand talking at us about his life while we were in the middle of one of the courses and please believe me when I say that we didn't give him any reason to think that we welcomed this... I'm getting annoyed just thinking about him. What a goon! I get the sense he doesn't tend to hang on to jobs for too long though, so perhaps this shouldn't put anyone off.

Hudsons delivers the best dining experience available in York. Small, intimate restaurant located inside the Grand Hotel which is also open to non residents. Booking advisable particularly at week ends. It is a quality dining experience in every respect- decor, ambience, staff, service, wines and outstanding food- both visually and taste. Two taster menus available 5 and 9 courses- both available with wine pairings. Food is amazing giving yiu the opportunity to taste things you may shy away from on an a la carte menu. Any dietry requirements can be accommodated and dishes can be substituted but obviously prior notice is required to do this. It is difficult to single out any particular course as a favourite. All were just wonderful and made uo fron top quality ingredients and presented extremely well visually. Unhurried service. Wonderful dining experience.

Gracias

Everything from start to finish was perfect. We recived an email from the hotel prior to visiting and advised we ere newly weds on arrival the table was decorated with confetti and a little card (lovely personal touch). We had 2 waiters serving us all night both were incredibly attentive. We were very impressed with the head waiters knowledge on food, wine and whiskey. Both were very easy to chat too and fun and made the night very enjoyable. This was my firat tasting menu so i was not sure what to expect we opted for the 9 courses and boy was i in for a surprise. The courses were beautifully presented, delicate and tasted incredible. On first inspecting the menu i was not overly joyed (as i tend to eat with my eyes) but once it arrived I was mesmerised. I ate things ive never tried before and was very very impressed. My favourite courses were the artichoke and scallops (two things I would never choose). The waiters chose our wine to fit the course which was perfect as I am not very knowledgeable on wine. We paid £250 in total that included the food, btl of wine and whiskey to finish. Very enjoyable experience hats off to the chefs and front of house serving team well deserved tip! Looking forward to returning very soon

Whilst staying at the hotel we booked into this restaurant. We were given the option of either a five course tasting menu or a nine course tasting menu - nothing else . The first course was average and served with bread and butter . The next three courses were excellent but the final course ( dessert ) was disappointing . It just contained a panacotta with four blackberries and two small pieces of apple and it was all too cold to taste properly . My wife had to have the vegetarian tasting menu as she does not eat fish or red meat and it just seemed to be the same puree or sauces in each dish. Not sure where the blackberries came from as they are in season in the summer as far as I am aware . I became tired of having an empty wine glass so started topping up my wine myself . The wine waiter was only interested in one of the four tables in the restaurant as they had ordered the wine tasting to go with the meal , everyone else did not get the attention you would expect from a five star establishment . I made my comments about the food but did not receive anything back from the hotel .

Having purchased a gift voucher for afternoon tea for my friends birthday i had high expectations for a wonderful experience. Sadly we were both left feeling somewhat underwhelmed. The positives - On arrival the hotel was everything I was anticipating. The staff from the doorman to the young gentleman who took our coats and seated us were lovely. Hudsons restaurant itself was beautifully set out.The negatives - the waiter was polite but seemed disinterested, he had given us afternoon tea menus but on learning we had a voucher he abruptly stated that we had no choice of food and said he would return in a few minutes for our drinks choice. I don't drink tea and am not a particular fan of coffee but I do enjoy the occasional flat white which was on the menu. On his return my friend ordered English breakfast tea & I requested a flat white. He responded by stating Italian roast....I said flat white, he again said Italian roast so I assumed he was asking me if the Italian roast was ok for the flat white so I said yes. I then made a visit to the ladies and on my return found that I had been given a pot of Italian roast coffee. Now what I should have done is requested the flat white, but I actually felt a little uncomfortable. Also it was my friends birthday and I really didn't want to make a fuss because it was her day so I drank the glass of water that had been provided. When the stand with the food came out it looked delicious and to be fair there were some lovely items. In particular the savoury cheese and tomato tart and sausage roll were both delicious. Having asked for the salmon on the salmon and cream cheese bagel to be omitted I was left with, no surprise, a cream cheese bagel which was nothing more than average. The real let down in the savoury department was the beef pastrami and emmental cheese on rye sandwich which to be frank was awful. There was very little beef and the cheese and bread seemed dry almost stale. The scones and clotted cream were nice but I have certainly had better. The little jar of lemon curd made a nice change from jam. Although both strawberry and raspberry jams were also provided. The cake selection looked lovely but again turned out to be a mixed bag. The kid royale cheesecake was nice and tart, and the choux bun filled with chocolate was fine. As we were full the remaining cakes were boxed up to take home. The toffee apple cup cake looked great but was not very nice. It was quite dry and sickly sweet. The date and ginger cake was lovely but similar in taste to the cupcake which seemed to predominantly taste of toffee. In fact we both felt that there was little contrast in the cake selection. It would have been nice to have something different, perhaps lemon or orange, something more refreshing.Having expected to be wowed we both felt underwhelmed. Over it was a pleasant experience but when you factor in the cost it was certainly not worth the money. I am sorry to say that I would not return and wouldn't recommend it.

The Stone Bass and Sirloin were covered in salt....I don't mind it, but my wife couldn't eat either of these. The beef lacked flavour for a cut that declared it had been 21 days hung. They had a May special of '2 for 1' on the tasting menu...had it not been for this I would have complained. My hint? go A La Carte and ask for the salt to be held back.....

Im going to start with a confused question... how is this not the best restaurant in York? or indeed Northern England. Im rather lucky and get to travel a lot and eat in some very good (and very expensive) restaurants both in UK and abroad. However we had the Tasting menu on Saturday evening whilst staying in the hotel for a weekend break... simply astonishingly good.Every course from the pre-pre-starter through to the desert-desert .. was mouthfuls and brilliance. Highest compliments to the chef and his team they excelled.Pre-starter set the meal off and was incredible .. the fish course however was truly outstanding .. in fact I could rave about each course.. every one being brilliantly prepared and presented.. nicely explained by the attentive and well drilled staff.Even the sommeliere (I had the wine accompaniment) was helpful and well drilled. Everything from the spacing between the courses (a common error or failing) was perfect to each mouthful being a treat. You might have got the idea that we really enjoyed this .. Considering the quality, the hotel captive setting and the fact that the restaurant was busy and Id guess 70 - 80 covers meant our hopes were not high when we walked in but when we left the smile lasted for hours and we have already told many of our family and friends just how good it was!Even the value.. at 65 for non wine and 100 to include wine accompaniment on every course represents very good value ... Ive paid much much in Michellin restaurants for much much worse food and dining experience. What a brilliant treat.. if you live in the area and havent been ...why? If you in staying the hotel and dining out... again why??

Booked online with an expectation of trying the Tasting Menu. When we arrived we were welcomed by the friendly (maybe pretentious?) host. He took our coats and a young girl gave us the menus. We were just given the a la carte menu, so assumed you had to specifically ask for the tasting menu. We asked if they were serving it tonight and she just said "no sorry" with no explanation!! If we were told when booking or there was a note on the website that stated it was "request only" then that would have been fine, but we were very disappointed. Especially as the table next to us were having the tasting menu and they were only 2/3 courses in as we arrived, I can only assume that it IS request only and we were not told or it's only for guests who are staying in the hotel...very odd! We stayed nevertheless, my partner's starter was overly salty and really not very enjoyable. I had the chicken starter and it was better, but not amazing...just chicken and slightly dry. My main was brilliant, but again my partner's was not. As he is a chef and appreciates good food, I was more upset that he hadn't really enjoyed himself. I can't remember the desserts we had (which should say something about them really), but the cheeseboard we had was amazing...probably the best course of the night. I waited over half an hour for a glass of port, by which point we were halfway through the cheese - not what I expected from a restaurant like this, however I do believe the girl who served us hadn't worked there long, so maybe was still being trained. I would definitely visit again, but would make sure I had the tasting menu! The wine list was very extensive & impressive and the restaurant is beautiful, so I do think it was an off day or week, but would perhaps give it a second chance! Just not what I was expecting...

It had a limited and uninspiring selection. The food when it came was unremarkable and did not compare at all to our last week's visit to the Bistro in Wentworth. I am sure we will be back because it would be unfair to judge a place on the one visit. However, we will be expecting a better meal next time. Pricey, but to be expected in quality hotel/restaurant. This is not McDonalds.

This is a fine dining restaurant with characteristically small nouvelle cuisine portions. You will need to have starter plus main plus dessert to have a good sized meal. Menu is very limited with beef, fish, lamb but no chicken option when we visited. Ambience is sophisticated and pleasant with good table spacing. Staff were attentive and polite with maitre de, sommelier and enough waiters and waitresses to cope as the restaurant filled up. The food we had was delicious and beautifully presented but very small in size. You are treated to a small amuse bouche at the start of the meal and chocolate and fruit pastilles am use ouch end the end. These along with two pieces of bread help to make the meal filling enough. Really a special occasion restaurant in my view, for foodies.

We had dinner with friends while staying at the hotel. Party of 4.Menu is typical gourmet genre with a good selection of dishes. No sides! Meal is best appreciated by taking 3 courses that complement each other. Do not expect a "blow-out". More traditional fare is served in the "bar".Very good wine list. Complimentary tap water if required. The food was very well cooked and presented in a manner to be expected in such of an establishment.A small "pre-appetiser" was served gratis. There was no dedicated sommelier which might be expected in a hotel of this standard.

We were staying in the hotel and decided to have dinner at the in house restaurant. Meals are not cheap here so ordinarily the expectation would be for well prepared and cooked food. This was not the case. Baby parsnips that ought to be tender and sweet were like bullets and not worth attempting to eat. Other vegetables were raw. After complaining replacement vegetables were brought to the table but it was as if all comments had been ignored as these were also inedible.I decided that no further complaint was worthwhile and besides it should only be necessary to complain once.A two course meal for two people came to over a £100. Definitely NOT good value for money and a very poor reflection on the establishment.

We were staying at this hotel and had planned to go to Betty's for a Cream tea one afternoon (as recommended by work colleagues). However, my wife is pregnant and you have to queue for Betty's so we went here instead and am so pleased we did! The ambiance is relaxing and peaceful (unlike Betty's where we went for breakfast instead) and you have nice views of the York Walls. The Cream tea itself had one of the most unique selections of sweet and savoury I've ever had for a Cream tea and everything was delicious. The tea and coffee menu was equally extensive and satisfying. It was also very filling, so much in fact that we took some of the cakes back to our room as couldn't manage them in one sitting (they provided a nice box and bag to do this). It's a few pounds more than Betty's but certainly worth it for the choice, ambiance and quality of this Cream tea afternoon. Plus you can book in advance and don't have to queue in the rain!!

The constant TripAdvisor dilemma. To judge a restaurant like this against its peer group or against restaurants as a whole? In the full spectrum it is excellent -as it should be for its location and price. Against other top end restaurants - you have to leave 'excellent' for those who achieve something extra and magical. That said, the food was lovely. The service was first class - personal, friendly and responsive rather than being mechanical and repetitive. The cheese trolley is a must and the staff member serving the cheese ( what is the cheese equivalent of a sommelier?) deserves a commendation for enthusiasm.

On day 1 of our mini break at The Grand, we were advised by the Concierge to try the Tasting menu at Hudson's restaurant- there was a 2 for 1 offer it being middle of January, which sealed the deal. WOW! What an amazing experience! Staff were so friendly, combining courteous, impeccable service with humour and interest. We enjoy our food like most people but we're not live to eat people, and don't really understand the exaggerated worship of 3 star awards etc. However I have to say that we were both blown away by the amazing flavours and presentations we were served that evening, with delightful culinary combinations and amazing effects on the senses, course after course. It was a night to remember, couldn't fault it in any way, and so delicious we almost licked our plates! an absolute must for a special occasion or treat.

We have stayed in this hotel several times over the last few years, normally to celebrate my birthday but unfortunately this year we were unable to, the hotel was fully booked. As compensation we decided to book a meal in Hudson's, we really enjoyed the experience last year, it is a lovely restaurant with a warm and serene ambience, quite rare these days. We found that the menu had changed somewhat and choices were quite limited, especially for my husband, he likes his food simple. I ordered the scallop and pork belly as starter and enjoyed the course but I was only served one scallop and four tiny pieces of pork. My husband passed on the starter as there was nothing to his taste. We both ordered beef sirloin for main, my husband asked if he could order some potatoes as the beef was served with pearl barley, he was informed quite brusquely that side orders are not available but we would have bread to accompany it!!! The plates arrived with two tiny pieces of beef, a small piece of beef cheek and roughly a tablespoon of barley!!! My beef was served medium rare, which is how I usually order it, normally the meat is soft and tender but this beef was quite chewy and had sinew running through it. It bore no resemblance to the lovely meal that we had enjoyed last year. The food presentation was excellent but there just wasn't enough of it! I think this is fine dining in the extreme. My husband wanted to complain but as it was my birthday I didn't want to make a scene and spoil the evening. We paid the bill and left, my husband still hungry! I have been to many fine dining restaurants and must say that this time, this one did not make the grade for me, even the Ritz, a solid 5 star hotel will serve you with a portion of potatoes! We did have a very nice bottle of wine but it didn't really make up for the meal. I am very sad to say that we won't be visiting again.

We had read about the Tastng Experience and were about to try it when we saw the recent offer in September. We were so glad we did, it was a fabulous meal in a beautiful old building, and good service in the restaurant. We were even shown to a window seat were we last sat on a previous visit. The bar is a wonderful place to sit and enjoy it pre dinner drink. Unfortunately there seemed to be a lack of training, or perhaps short staffed when we visited. On pointing out that the drink order was incorrect, the barman just said it wasn't! However, this was rectified at the end of the evening, when pointing this out when paying the bill. We will definitely return.

We stayed for one night as a treat and booked dinner bed and breakfast. Both meals being served in Hundson's.Dining at 7pm we were the 3rd party in the room which by 8.30pm had filled. (but there is plenty of room). The staff were very professional and friendly - attentive but enjoying the conversation, and helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. The wine waiter was attentive and ensure every glass in the room was filled, but also removed plates and served. Service (silver) was an you would expect but secondary to the food. The food was of small but beautifully presented and flavoursome quality. My roast potato was as small as a pea, but cooked to perfection as was all the food.I decided on the cheese board selection which was served from a trolley at table and like all good presentations, (a most interesting cheese scraper) was skillfully managed by the server. We had drinks before, an excellent wine, and drinks after in the Whiskey Bar. Service at seat is the order of the day in the bar.The food was the best I have had at a hotel for a long time. Truly a 5 star experience.

While reading the menu outside The Grand Hotel late afternoon, I was approached by the amiable doorman Andrew. After discussing the just-opened exhibition at the Art Gallery, called 'Flesh' and quite capable of turning many people off food, he persuaded me to take up their Hudson's restaurant's special offer of two 7-course Tasting Menus for the price of one. It turned out to be a superb deal.My wife and I returned in the evening to enjoy seven faultless courses, explained by excellent waiter Tibor, a dab hand with the liquid nitrogen, who mentioned that, that same day, the restaurant had been awarded a third rosette. The meal was Michelin star standard, with Craig Atchinson's Strawberry and Elderflower dessert a veritable masterpiece.

My wife and I found the meal at Hudson's to be inconsistent. Bread is made in the kitchen and consisted of superb Sourdough slices and Focaccia rolls. We both had the Scallop starter which was very nice indeed. My only suggestion would be that at £16.50 for a starter I don't believe it would be expecting too much for there to be more than one scallop on the plate. Albeit it was a big scallop but two would have been better, particularly as they were of very good quality and excellently cooked. The sourcing of the Scallops made the main courses rather perplexing. My wife had Lamb and I had Beef. Unfortunately, both pieces of meat were surprisingly lacking in flavour. Taking the Scallops into consideration this seems strange. I believe the meat is sourced locally. We skipped desserts and had cheese instead which was perfectly nice. Overall, the cooking is of a good standard, and if the meat had had better flavour this would have been an excellent meal. The staff were lovely, balancing just the right amount of engagement without being intrusive.

A nice ambience and the service proved to be ok but the food was very disappointing for the price and for the setting. In particular the size of the portions were of a tasting menu level and not certainly of a starter and mains level. My fois gras for starters was totally covered in a red port sauce that emasculated the rest of the dish and my halibut was thin, about four inches square and surrounded by vegetables which were a decoration rather than a meal. To be fair the flavour of the fish, the mussel sauce and the salsify was nice but it was warm rather than hot and the offering would make nouveaux cuisine look a feast. Similarly two of the party had the lamb and were totally underwhelmed by the portioning and when mains are between £25 and £35 there is really no excuse. The desserts proved a little more fulsome but for a total meal of over £200 they should be doing far better.

When we booked we were warned that the usual restaurant area was in the process of carpet cleaning and so we were not in the usual room. The room was cool and the air conditioning blowing more than necessary so we all kept several layers on. The food was really sublte, inventive and stylishly presented over the subtel punches of ebène caviar and wood sorrell were a clever extra. We were four experienced cooks who grow most of our own heritage frujt and vegetables and have visited a lot of the better restaurants in France se we were picky. Service was good, dishes were explained as they were placed on the table. We were impressed, Plates were very cool, almost cold and this did spoil the eating experience, we felt obliged to gulp rather than savour even so the food was cold before we could finish. We mentioned this to the waiter but his English was poor and he did not understand . One niggle, the waiter did not really know much about the cheeses on offer and we thought the range of cheeses on offer was poor. The Isle of Mull cheddar was well off its peak, and only the local blue was in top condition so the cheese trolley needs attention and some staff training is needed. The desserts were like the main courses, superb but most had cream in them even if the menu description did not always make this clear. Some diners will have an intolerance of cream content so it is worth mentioning cream in the menu. The local (Yorkshire English) waiters were excellent, polite and informative. Hudson's is well a visit and the money.

We ate here as we were staying at this fabulous hotel. However, compared to the decadence of the hotel, this restaurant is sadly lacking, in quality, ambience, and is generally lacking any character. It is very very small, no privacy to it, tables close together, no chance to feel like its an intimate meal in here...The menu is limited, and offers very poor choice. Dishes are ridiculously over priced, although if it was a good choice and high quality we wouldn't have minded that. I had the beef dish, it was tough and barely warm, give it a miss, its nothing to write home about. I go to Michelin restaurants, this is no where near any that I've been to.The service started off as average, nothing special. However, as the evening wore on, and the restaurant emptied, it became very clear that the staff wanted us out of there, very poor, made us feel very uncomfortable, and we were still drinking our very expensive wine. Its such a shame about this restaurant, as it could be so much more amidst this pretty spectacular hotel.

Every time I visit this restaurant I want to love it ..I want to love it because the building has been wonderfully renovated and constructed into a first class hotel wirh great cocktails and a classy dining room .And I'm always let down a little by the limited choices of menu items ..And my wife always reminds me when I'm walking in to this place that I find the menu too limited ... So it's my own fault ! Dining last night with my wife , the first night of the Ebor week races , which always brings an influx of tourists into town , the lack of kitchen preparation was astonishing .. They surpassed themselves ...My wife tried to order scallops , crab and something else I forget , each time an embarrassed waiter apologising because they'd run out of the item .. Now I'm no expert , but if the Ebor week racing has been running for over 150 years at least and every resident knows town is going to be busy ..and the restaurant is well booked ..wouldn't you order enough food to cater for everyone all evening ? On a very limited a la carte menu with only 6 starters , for two or three to be sold out before 9pm is disgraceful .... In the end my wife couldn't see anything to try at all and I had the steak tartar .. The tartar was ok but certainly far from great and nothing close to anything special .. So a big disappointment on the starters ..The sirloin main course we both tried , and that was well cooked and flavourful ..a nice meal ..outrageously overpriced for the portion , but it's a nice setting so you don't mind ..But here's the thing when I go to any top class restaurant around the world and get a nice accompanying steak sauce ..a bernaise , a simple au poivre , or my personal favourite bone marrow ..then if I'm paying , whether I'm a philistine or not ..they should try at least to humour me here ...not say ...." The chef won't make sauces " ..I find that pretentious , and hence , won't be back ... A restaurant who can't give a good choice of menu items at these prices ..and can't keep its menu on track in a recognised busy period , doesn't deserve patronage ..On a positive note the wine list is very good and well priced , lots of bargains ..the service is attentive and courteous .. Maybe If they manage to get over themselves in the kitchen and realise they've a very long way to go before entering Michelin status , they'll chill out a little ..offer more choice and be a little more flexible ..if I hear of that happening , I'll try yet again ..

As avid restaurant goers, living next door to the hotel, we were very impressed by the lovely food. It was delicious, well prepared and well presented. The staff were very friendly, conscientious and a credit to the hotel. It cost us around £80 per head. The major thing that let it down however was the disco taking place in the above room. The people were stamping like crazy to a range of loud pop hits, so much in fact that the vibrations could be felt around the entire restaurant. Totally spoilt the meal and ambience. We weren't even offered a complimentary drink to make up (nor indeed acknowledgement of how loud and inappropriate the noise was) which made me worry that this is a regular occurrence when wedding functions are on. Such a shame!
