Lovely venue in a lovely village. Tables spaced throughout a delightful enclosed garden. It has the feel of peace and idyllic tranquility, far from the bustle of city life.

We drove out to the Walled Garden after reading a facebook mention. The village is lovely and the inside of the cafe is quaint, but the outside where you sit is underwhelming. Torn plastic tablecloths, uncomfortable seats, LOTS of wasps, that perhaps might not have been so keen to stay if three of the empty tables had been cleared. Kitchen, looked like it needed a clean up, especially as it’s right behind the till- so in full view. Victoria sponge cake was somewhat dry. Latte which was served in a glass, was a bit tasteless. Server was nice and our order arrived promptly, but It was a disappointing visit/trip. Hillhouse nursery landscove still our No1 for amazing cake and lunch.

Had been many times in the past and been very happy with both food and service, however very different on this visit. All four of our tea cups were very dirty and did not seem to have been washed since previous visit. We got them changed and the replacements were still not as clean as we would have liked and the milk jug seemed to have a bit of spinach stuck to the outside. We ordered four cream teas with single scones without being offered a menu and then realised that we could have shared two full cream teas at a cheaper price. We mentioned this to the waiter who reported back and stated that he would have to take back half of our cream and jam! No excuse for dirty cups and service offhand at best, will not be visiting again.

What a cute little tea room in the heart Dunsford. Such amazing views from the upstairs seating area and beautiful garden. This place has so much character. I came with my husband, we enjoyed a roast beef sandwich and a bubble and squeak which were both tasty and just what we needed after a long walk. We then had a cream tea which was astonishing I don’t think I’ve ever tasted a scone quite like that. The staff were polite and lovely to chat to. I definitely think this place has stepped up from the previous owner. I will definitely be coming again and have recommend family and friends to visit also.

Stayed 2 nights Father’s Day weekend break. What a lovely little gem of a place it is . Our room overlooking the church was quaint and delightful, spotlessly clean and extras in room such as bathrobes, tv tea/coffee etc. breakfast is on another level with platter of fresh berries, granola, yoghurt , honey and pastries. Delicious cooked breakfast and freshly brewed coffee which is also delicious. We had Sunday roast for lunch with cold drinks but unfortunately I didn’t have room for pudding! However next day I did try the tasty homemade scones which had just come out of the oven with clotted cream and jam, perfect. Would certainly go back to stay again - thank you to all staff as you work so hard and long hours to make your customers feel welcome and at home

On a visit to the area for a family weekend and pre booked a Sunday roast. I’m really sorry to say but it was significantly below par. There were 8 of us ordering drinks and lunch, we did not receive any drinks for approximately 50 minutes, we only ordered a few cans of fizzy drinks and 2 milk shake shakes, we most certainly didn’t receive water for the table as described by previous reviewers. Our food eventually arrived over an hour after ordering (this was not freshly prepared) and some parts of the meal was cold eg the roasted parsnips, carrots, potatoes and the meat. The cauliflower/broccoli cheese was very nice but wasn’t enough to save the meal, I’m afraid. The service was less than amiable, all in all it was one of the worst dining experiences we have had in a very long time, so disappointing. I don’t review often but this is definitely a miss. Sorry but it might be great for an afternoon tea, maybe should stay in this lane.

Been for morning coffee here twice, both times in glorious weather. Very dog friendly and trying so hard to make interesting gluten free cakes and scones too...... when I talked to the owner/chef he said the lemon cake is also dairy free ... just wish that they updated their menu's to include the gf selection and mention the df lemon cake. NB. the list of gf cakes is just on a black board that I missed first time. It is very quirky going through the inside section to the garden which has tables spread out between the shrubs and perennial borders, and sitting there has amazing views of Bridford Woods. Just brilliant and out of this world. So dog friendly that both times we have been so far they have brought treats out for each of the dogs, so they love going there too :) . Hoping to go again as the autumn colours start as they are open everyday till the end of October and then weekends until December. I reckon they then have a well deserved holiday until the spring. The gf scone was one of the best I have tasted and looked like a scone too.... and the list of teas that are available is impressive with many fruit and herbal teas.

As others have said - blink & you might miss this gem of a place in the centre of a picturesque 'classic' Devon village. Access is through the cottage & down some steps, but I noticed that there is a door leading from the garden into the street so I'm sure someone in wheelchair or with mobility issues could probably avoid the steps and go straight into the garden. The garden has been well designed offering gravel paths with tables scattered around. As they are sheltered from each other by flower beds with large shrubs and traditional cottage garden plants you feel completely private from other diners, . A lovely place to relax, enjoy the food & take in the day. They describe themselves as 'dog-friendly' (obviously, as long as the dogs are people-friendly and on leads) but they were more than friendly to our dogs - they welcomed them with treats!

All we could hear when we were having our snack was staff talking in the kitchen about their personal toilet habits and wiping their bottoms in the crudest manner possible. Complained to the manager or owner who did not bother to make any comment about the complaint. Ordered a chocolate milkshake but I think that it lacked any chocolate flavoring whatsoever. Was it just a bad day?

We reserved a table for a family celebration for a Friday evening. What we didn't expect was that we would get a whole room with a fabulous view for ourselves! Evening menu has a lot to choose from; a range of starters, mains and desserts is big but not overly confusing. The meals are simple but absolutely delicious, so homely and beautifully presented! Be aware though, the portions are HUGE. We had both vegetarians and meat eaters in our party and we all enjoyed our food equally. Mushroom stroganoff has to be the best meal I've had in ages, felt really bad for not being able to finish it off...! The girl who served us was fantastic - professional and super nice! Overall, do pay a visit to Walled Gardens, especially in the morning when you can have your tea and scones outside in the garden - it's absolutely amazing.

On our Easter escape to Devon we went for a woodland walk towards Dunsford with the aim to have lunch at the local pub, only to find out that the pub was closed. This turned out to be very lucky for us as if it were not for this we would not have discovered the Walled Garden just down the road. The setting was beautiful and had a "secret garden" feel to it which my 3 boys loved. They had fun exploring the gardens while we waited for our food to arrive. The food was absolutely fantastic, very tasty and the portions were generous - so much that we couldn't finish it all and took it home with us in a box! The staff were very friendly and helpful too.If you're in the area I highly recommend a visit to the Walled Garden!

Called in for coffee. Asked for a cafeterie of coffee and the waiter did not know what this was. Was told they no longer do these so I ordered an Americano instead. A pot of (tasted like instant) arrived. When I questioned this I was told that this was filter coffee which is not to my taste and I would not have ordered it. I was also told by the proprietor that "most people can't tell the difference between an Americano and filter". This is insulting - particularly as we are now in a cafe society and excellent coffee is obtainable everywhere.

We happened on this little gem purely by chance - it doesnt look much from outside but the walled garden area is a quiet little haven in a beautiful village. Excellent food with a great choice - all home made. Service was excellent - very friendly people and very good value for money - very glad our daughter needed the loo or we wouldnt have tried it! Definitely worth a visit

We stopped in for sandwiches and tea cakes, a cup of tea and a sit down while out walking. The Walled Garden is very Devon, very English and very good, with a lovely garden to sit out in and plenty of tables inside too.

Took a friend here for lunch as she recommended it. Lovely gardens and friendly service. I was a bit fussy about the salad that accompanied my pasty but it was no problem for them and served with a smile. The vegetarian pasty I had was the best I have ever had, clearly homemade, great pastry and 'proper' Devonshire pasty filling. Too full to have pudding but will definitely be back. Prices are a little steep which would put me off returning more often but otherwise could not fault it.

Every year we go to Devon for a couple of weeks and The Walled Garden has always been a highlight of our visit after a long walk through the woods. We usually have two visits during the two week stay. Our visit on Friday 12th August took much longer than usual. Service here has always been a bit hit or miss and the notice as you enter the hallway basically saying that impolite customers won't be tolerated tends to make me think they've had numerous complaints. I accept that it's a very small kitchen and is probably quite tricky to work in but that's not the fault of the customer. When you arrive at street level, as you walk in there's a doorbell noise which goes off announcing your arrival as you descend the stairs and go out the back to the garden, but no one actually acknowledges you, in fact I was glowered at when a member of staff came out of the kitchen! Not all staff are like that and many of them are quite pleasant and efficient. Many of them are quite young and their ability to converse confidently with adults tends to vary as does their ability to take/listen to food orders or answer questions about the menu. The menu itself is adequate for lunchtime offering main meals or sandwiches. Creatures of habit we usually order the sandwiches which are really tasty and come with a choice of white or granary bread and a salad garnish. We also go for cheesy chips which are delicious-well we're on holiday! We order cans of coke or lemonade which are £1.45 which I think is quite steep and have nearly doubled in price in the years we've been frequenting the tearooms. I ordered a raspberry milkshake for a change as my son had that the week before but hadn't told me it didn't taste of any flavour which of course was true. We always have a cream tea or a cake and a coffee/tea. The cream teas are quite expensive(£7) but we order one between two and share it as the single cream teas are £4.50 and my preferred drink is coffee so I order a latte. We arrived at 1pm and it took until well after 3.20pm before we left as the service was so slow. The place wasn't full but the waitresses just kept ignoring us and seemed to make a point of following the locals to their tables and sorting them out first. On this visit they seemed very disorganised. I eventually had to call a young girl over who seemed very clueless but we got there in the end. Needless to say they didn't get a tip when I paid the bill and that didn't go down overly well with the older women who took my payment as she was very short with me and was no doubt gritting her teeth as she just about said thank you! All that said however, we do still love this place and the garden is just so beautiful as are the views over to the hills. The food is good if a little pricey. They don't let you see the bill at the end as they use the order pad to work it out and just give you a total so it might be a good idea to do a rough calculation before going up to pay on the way out. It's a good idea to check the website for opening hours outside the summer season and if you do go in summer pick a dry day as many of the tables are not undercover and only have sun brollies.I do think it's worth a visit but don't expect quick service or a cheap lunch. Finally, if you're taking kids it does say on the menu that they need to be supervised at all times. There are lots of little paths in the garden with tables dotted all over so it's quite nice having a bit of privacy. Unfortunately there were some parents who allowed their kids to run round playing hide and seek but after two kids squeezed past my chair, I moved back to block the path and pointed the next lot in another direction reading loudly from the menu the fact that they're supposed to be supervised. The parents took the hint! It's ok to take kids there and walk them round the garden to view it but it's not a playground and we never allowed our kids to make a nuisance of themselves. Sorry to sound like a killjoy but kids running round in restaurants/tea gardens etc drives me bonkers!

We popped into the Walled Garden after doing a walk to Helltor and had a great experience. The garden is lovely and secluded with a number of different terraced levels. We both opted for the a scone with jam and cream. The scones were beautifully fresh and came with a very generous dollop of clotted cream. At £2.50 each we felt that they were fantastic value for money.Service was really excellent. There was a relatively young team but they cleared the tables and took out order very efficiently. We were in a bit of a rush as we had to catch the last bus, however we had more than enough time to enjoy the scones.

Having read mostly good reviews on trip advisor we decided that it would be perfect to stop here for a cream tea on the afternoon we got to Devon. The scones were nothing to write home about- could get the same anywhere. At the price I would expect something a bit more special. Definitely compares unfavourably with nearby Buckfast Abbey on price and quality. My wife doesn't drink tea so opted for a milkshake. Again, very average. Possibly made with semi-skimmed milk rather than full cream? Most surprising was that it was served in a stainless container rather than a traditional glass. Looked like the one which would have been used in the milk shake machine. Very odd. On a positive note, the surroundings were pleasant, with shrubbery all around the tables, making each one seem secluded and encouraging birds in. Unfortunately it was showery when we were there and so we moved under cover. In summary, nice surroundings but over-priced for only average food.

We had no idea this excellent little tea room existed until we saw a sign advertising it some way outside Dunsford. It’s a bit undistinguished from the outside, and very old fashioned inside (which I liked, but mightn’t be everyone’s choice). On a lovely sunny afternoon it sounded attractive, so we went through to the eponymous, beautifully designed garden, where tables are placed in separate little bushy enclaves, and you aren’t disturbed by other people. We’d only popped in for a cuppa, which we had with a slice of moist, lemony drizzle cake, but with its views over the hills, the sound of bees on the flowers and birds in the trees, it’s a delightful place to spend an afternoon. We liked the sound of the rest of the menu so will be back to try it. And a place where sparrows will come onto your table after crumbs gets my vote every time.
