We have lived in Bovey Tracey for over 30 years, and have always found the Dolphin the best place in town for dinner . In particular, over the last couple of years they have served a delicious Tapas menu. We have enjoyed the tapas as a couple numerous times, and have introduced several friend to this delight. Last night we went with 2 friends, with whom we have had the tapas menu previously. I have to say we were all so very disappointed! The pub now advertises Tuesday as Tapas evening, and so we thought there would be the "usual" selection of tapas plus maybe a few more tapas choices.. We were saddened to find that this was not the case. The selection of tapas(now referred to on the menu as "small plates or starters" was very limited compared to the previous offering. There had always been 2 "meze" platters on the menu; one veggie and one charcuterie. Last night there was only the veggie platter. We decided that the tapas was so limited, we ate from the "normal" pub food menu. None of the food was in the same league as it had always been. In addition, we had booked a table which has become our "regular". When we arrived we were told that we could not have that table, as the staff had not placed a reserved sign on it, and someone else was seated there. Instead of that window table we were given a table well back in the main body of the pub. I explained to the waitress that I become claustrophobic if I can't see out of a window. Her response was "oh dear." Adding insult to injury, the bill we were presented with included items which had been served to the person occupying the table we had reserved. It was hastily amended , but surely not have happened in the first place. Sadly, this will be our last visit to the Dolphin.

Excellent food and great service also a couple of good real ales. We came back for our anniversary dinner. Such a good choice. The food was excellent, with good service. This is a bit of an odd one, and by that I mean when we got to the hotel the three rooms I had booked had all been cancelled. I had called a couple of weeks before our stay and cancelled one room but all of them got cancelled by mistake. Anyway Emma who I think owns the place did everything she could to resolve the issue. And whilst the solution wasn’t perfect, it did give us all a room for the night. We had dinner that evening which was very good and we had breakfast before we left in the morning. So, the booking got messed up but it got resolved and we got well looked after. Thanks Emma

We have stayed here many times and feel the Dolphin has gone downhill. The rooms are still nice comfy and clean. Breakfast still great and location is good. Unfortunatly the younger staff are on their phones a lot of the time even when customers are waiting to be served. The Dolphin has become a glorified pub and not a nice hotel that it used to be. We also noticed there was very sticky tables.

Dinner got off to a bad start when the waiter advised us that the Dolphin didn't have a wine list and seemed surprised that we had even asked. I ordered 'Honey and cider home roasted ham' with eggs and chips. When it arrived the so called home roasted ham consisted of a few thin scraps of fatty ham of the type packaged and sold cheaply by supermarkets as 'trimmings'. Served with stale overcooked chips this was a very poor experience - we will not be back!

I brought my business partner here for a quick lunch and meeting and it was awful atmosphere. There was a grumpy lady on the bar who was mouthy and rude to some other customers. This is a pub I was expecting pub atmosphere but was very shocked on how it actually played out. Dirty sticky tables and dirty floor. The menu is very big not entirely sure why as there's not gonna be a massive range of people coming here.

It’s the little things that make a good experience & the staff should be more aware of the customer’s needs.

Delicious Sunday lunch - beautiful beef brisket with fantastic roasts and huge Yorkshire Pudding. I loved that the veg was fairly simple (not covered in stuff or mixed up with other veg) and there was a scrummy cauliflower cheese. The child’s portion was a great size portion and there was plenty of options for my other child who doesn’t enjoy a roast - Grace’s Bean pie was perfect for her. Great service and we were checked on to make sure we had everything we needed and that we weee happy with our food. We were well looked after and will be back again.

Do you know, when Rob owned the Hotel it was fab. Tonight I asked "Do you sell Teignworthy?" "No we are something or other brewery now, all Badger Brewery!" "Shame, a local, better beers would be nice". "Do you sell Golden Champion, as per your poster, great pint!" "No, we don't do that, well we do in bottles!". "Hey ho, Thursty Ferret it is!" The pub is a shadow of it's former self. Barman sadly left his charisma at home. Beer ok. Empty pub. I understand why. Times move on, but when Rob owned the pub they were great times. A sense of belonging and community. Now they even seem miserable serving the poor selection of beer that they sell. Shame. Call me a miserable git, but I used to love that pub!

Despite living local to the Dolphin this was only our second visit. The car park is large and there is plenty of outdoor seating; the the interior is laid out with plenty of booths and open tables. We found a table, got drinks, and ordered our food. I understand this is a Hall and Woodhouse establishment so one might expect beers from their Badger Brewery but, regrettably, all I managed to get was lager. The food, when it arrived was plain and, whilst being edible, wasn't anything special. I was unimpressed with the cleanliness of our table because my newspaper (and my hands) stuck to the table top suggesting infrequent cleaning. That said, the staff were good as was the service. The management should realise that it's the little things that count !

Arrived way too early to book in. Part way through our drink I enquired when our room would be ready. Tom (?) checked and double checked - no booking found. He said he had nothing available and, whilst apologising profusely, made a call. He explained the problem and came to an arrangement with the Cromwell Hotel just up the road. Then, still apologising, he told us we were booked to spend two nights at the Cromwell with The Dolphin paying for one of the nights. As the Cromwell kitchen is closed we were also told to arrive at the Dolphin for breakfast. What a star, going to all that effort to remedy a simple, honest mistake. Brilliant.

Indeed, my more than thirty years experience/work/trading within the hotel ad restaurant industries, commerce, private service and logistics within France, the USA and the UK, usually gives me a balanced and per merit opinion that is well respected within a positive mind reputation. The Dolphin staff, made up of a few young folks included that day, were so sweet and welcoming. The ambiance was so relaxed and soothing. The food was indeed just "au point" and well made. The Pear and Stilton salad was just bliss! As for the Pork Roast, it did the trick and then some. The stuffing made by the chef was "par excellence" as well as the home made Yorkshire pudding. A delightful experience de rigueur. If you wish to have a pause in your busy life and reconnect with yourself and good holistically minded food, THIS is the place.

It is clear to see what they have already done to improve the accommodation. Our room had been refurbished but our bathroom although functional was in need of modernisation. One of our party though had a fully refurbished and modern walk in shower room. The owners and staff go out of their way to make you feel comfortable-home from home. The place is exceptionally clean. Have been to the dolphin plenty of times since the takeover and it’s definitely a good place to stop for a quick drink, take the family or have a date night. The staff are friendly and attentive. The food is fantastic with amazing range of...

We called in for food on Saturday evening. Whist the food was superb, the service from the staff needs addressing. One of the waitresses had a face like thunder, miserable as sin, uninterested, bored, no conversation. No one asked if the food was ok, which...

A really lovely local country pub; many locals here giving the pub a true community atmosphere. Very dog friendly. Good beer, and the staff even friendlier than the dogs. On Sundays, they just serve roasts, but they accommodated us by serving delicious stuffing balls as a special favour. There is a roaring log fire and a comfy sofa, and sweeping views. Highly recommended.

If you go to Bovey Tracey a visit to Old cottage tea shop is a must. What an absolutely delightful tea room. Old fashioned charm at its best. Good old fashioned menu. It's like having lunch at Grandma's. An absolute must visit.

We all enjoyed a tasty, reasonably priced breakfast. Service took a while but that was explained to us and they were very busy. Good sized portions; my Eggs Royale (with smoked salmon) was delicious. Quite a noisy space, difficult to hear at times, again, probably due to how busy there were. Easy to park (and free!) Not sure where the ‘Italian’ theme has come from?
