Food was excellent and the female member of staff that served us was excellent, but unfortunately the Manager treated us very badly. After questioning why the free dessert couldn't be a Sundae (as advertised on their Facebook page) he just laughed and said "Misleading hey!" We said it was bad that they advertised it and he said "Well that one we don't even do" when showing him the post. We gave in as he said "It's my decision", 5 minutes later he came back and said we were being aggressive to him and we were not getting any desserts. We were SHOCKED! We are all over 40, never ever had a situation like this and been there for years. I have worked in hospitality for over 20 years and the way he dealt with the situation was awful. We have been visiting for years, but won't be returning. Please train your Manager in Customer Service and don't advertise desserts that are not part of the deal.

The staff were helpful and pleasant but the carvery food was very poor quality the meat tough and vegetables appalling. I cannot understand why this place is consistently poor on its food. The staff are pleasant, the situation is nice but it is always let down by its food. It was disappointing last time we went but we decided to ignore advice from friends to avoid the place and try again but we won't be back.

The place was very empty and not very warm. With front doors both open and draughts coming through to dining area. We all decided on carvery, selecting meet and veg & trimmings. Taking our seats we realised the food on plates was barely tepid warm. We approached staff and chef...he was non plused.. stating it was hot when it went out...no apology offered..just walked away. Further investigation showed some hot plates were not working!! Apparently they did turn up heat...to late for us, we ended up eating a cold meal. The staff inc managed obviously no idea how to manage situation ignored us, apart from offering complimentary coffee. This place was previously operated very succefully for 20+ years. But since change of ownership has DRASTICALLY declined. On paying. I had already decided not to pay full amount. I agreed a reduction, paid and left. However during my leaving conversation with manager, they KNEW OF HOT PLATE ISSUES, "but what are we supposed to do" it is a public eating area and they could have managed much better. However staff, manager and belligerent CHEF !!! obviously not skilled and equipped enough to deliver a good food & service,or deal with dining public My friends had been coming to this establishment for a number of years and had been disappointed on previous occasion. BUT WILL NO LONGER PATRONISE THIS ESTTABLISHMENT AGAIN. Read GEN review and make up your own minds..but be forwarded. Happy New Year

We took a friend here for lunch. We have patronised this pub since it first opened 22 years plus. We were looking forward to a lovely carvery, which we all chose. All of the meats and vegetables were barely warm, bordering on cold! I called over the chef, who was tall and well built, no name badge. I commented on the food and he said he would check it. He tested all of the food with a probe and then adjusted the settings on the hot plates. He then came across and reported that one of the hot plates was not working. They should have known that when they set up for lunch. He was very brash and no apology given, he just walked away! A waitress came to our table and asked if everything was ok, she suggested I spoke to the manager. He said they were having trouble with the hot plates. I asked him to put my dinner in the microwave as it was inedible as it was. He said he would offer us complimentary coffees. We sat at our table long after we had finished eating and drinking. No member of staff asked if we wanted coffees or desserts, we were ignored! The Smugglers Inn after 22 years of brilliant service and quality food was sold in May 2023 to South Devon Hospitality Ltd. Ever since then, the waiting staff and the quality of food has been far from satisfactory. Having visited several times since it was sold, regrettably this will be my last ever visit. To add insult to injury, their pricing structure does not reflect the quality of food. The behaviour of the Chef, the inattentiveness of the staff, the manager defending faults rather than passifying us all added to the bad experience. If they knowingly had a problem with the hot plates, they should have managed the quantities better, ensuring our food was hot. We were sat in the restaurant area, the rest of the pub was cold, smelt bad and on one of the coldest days this year, the woodburner was not lit, yet there were logs in the fireplace!! There were staff idle, so why were they not more attentive, why was our table which was reserved only partly set prior to our visit? Sloppy service by all concerned and for me it was the final strawer. I felt embarrassed for the friend who we took there. It is very noticeable how customer numbers have fallen dramatically since being sold. Let's hope South Devon Hospitality Ltd wake up and restore this business back to its former glory.

Well done Team Smugglers for putting on free fireworks and entertainment for your first Smuggle Fest. Great to see so many people enjoying the evening. The queues for food and drinks were very long but the staff remained cheerful under stressful conditions and provided service with a smile. Served by Keira just before the firework display when the bar was packed with waiting customers, most of who were in good spirits, and could see how hard the Smugglers Team were working. Well done on you first Smuggle Fest and looking forward to Smuggle Fest next year.

If i could give zero stars, i would have. Went for the firework night. Decided to buy me and my 13 year old son a carvery whilst waiting. Sat down at a table with cutlery on but no reserved sign. Started eating my food. 5 mins in and a rude older lady with brown hair and wonky teeth came over and very abruptly told me I can't sit inside. I said where am I supposed to eat and she told me to take our carvery outside. There were no tables outside and over 200 people shoulder to shoulder. When ordering I wasn't told I couldn't sit at a table in the carvery area, neither was I told when dishing up. I refused to move and was told to hurry up and leave. It's disgusting that we were made to rush our food. I felt stressed the whole time eating. The experience was shocking and it upset my kid also who wanted to go home before the fireworks even started. Now down to the food. The potatoes were dry and hard as were the Yorkshires. The meat wasn't great either and lets not mention the stuffing balls that were inedible and could smash a window if thrown. The carrots were good as was the colliflower cheese and gravy but no matter how good the sides were, it wasn't going to save the experience. I wouldn't go back for a free meal. I would recommend anyone who thinks of visiting, doesn't bother. Management needs to look at removing the rude employee as speaking of my disgust with others before I left, I was made aware this Is a regular attitude towards customers on her part.

Unfortunately this was our regular pub however, I don’t think we will be coming back. So many basic mistakes that it really has gone down hill. Firstly, terrible service and very chaotic. There didn’t seem to be enough staff working and most staff not really knowing what there doing. The food is poor. One of our members have the pork belly meal and the mash was cold with leeks on it which appeared and tasted uncooked. The burger has completely changed from their usual burger and is now dry and greasy. The pie is quite clearly one that is just frozen and microwaved. The fish and chips had very questionable mushy peas and were not edible. It was a very disappointing visit and we shall not be returning. We would have said something to a member of staff should we have had the opportunity however they were not easy to get the attention off.

Absolutely terrible!! Would NOT recommend. Supposed to be “famous” for their carvery’s, well let me tell you, it was absolutely shocking from start to finish. Started off with ordering two starters, soup of the day (mushroom) and garlic mushrooms. The mushroom soup was disappointing, very very garlicky and cardiac arrest salty!! However my garlic mushrooms were edible. We then get given our tickets for the carvery, we get to the carvery, and there is only 3 options of meat which were beef, turkey and pork. Well, should I say only one option of meat (beef) as the pork and turkey looked very very dry!! So myself and my nan both chose the beef as it looked edible, well that was until the man started to carve the meat, which then it came to my realisation that even the beef was not edible as it was completely raw. It was bleeding as he carving it. Totally ruined my appetite. I tasted the beef and my god, was I right. It was that chewy and grisly it wasn’t even edible. WOULDNT EVEN FEED IT TO MY DOGS!! Although the lady table checked us, seconds after we sat down with the meal, so we hadn’t even attempted to start eating yet, which was why we couldn’t complain until she came to take the plates. After telling the “manager” about our food, she storms off with a response of “I will deal with you in a minute” in a very rude tone. Ten minutes later, a man comes and says “ I’ve been told to see what’s wrong with the food” I then explained that the food was disgraceful and was not edible. He argued black was white and continued to say “well it’s not harmful to you” in which my response was, no it’s not but doesn’t mean it acceptable to stand and argue with the customer when they are explaining themselves and why they did not enjoy the food. Was not worth £18.99 and I certainly was not paying for food that I barely touched. His attitude was very poo and as for the kitchen staff, well, they were behaving like monkeys in a zoo. The restaurant was practically empty, and they sat us in the middle of the room right in front of the kitchen door where the kitchen staff were behaving like toddlers, it was like sitting in a zoo. Very poor food and very very poor customer service. Will not be returning!!!!

Visited for a birthday Sunday lunch last weekend. Used to love this place years ago, then it dipped quite considerably in service and quality so I was a bit nervous to try it again. The service, I have to say, was greatly improved. I have to give a shout out to our server Jay who was absolutely amazing. He was efficient and friendly without being over the top, and the witty banter about the lack of clotted cream was wonderful. The food was good, we were incredibly impressed with the range of gluten free choices (although sadly they'd run out of gluten free Yorkshire puddings). Also impressed with the fact that all the accompaniments (roast potato's, stuffing etc) was vegetarian so they really do cater for a wide variety of dietary needs. I would definitely visit again.

Had a great experience here five years ago. This time, however, we travelled for an hour to get here, only to experience four very luke warm carveries. The initial waitress service was good. However, having complained about the cold food, no one came initially to discuss. Eventually, the Manager came to the table, to tell us that we could have refreshed our plates, by which time there was no point. The Manager did apologise, however, and offered a 10% reduction on the total bill, which we accepted. A great shame that such a venue, which is in a beautiful location and used to be excellent, has gone so far downhill. We won't be going back.

Appalling. We had to go to the bar three times to eventually order something that had not run out. We waited an hour, until I was advised that what I had ordered was not gluten-free, after asking twice to confirm it was. I settled on an alternative, only to be presented with a completely different dish 15 minutes later. This was now our fourth meal choice. On leaving there was a brief apology, but that was it. Also of note: There was no staff awareness of how busy they were, as we were offered menus on arriving & then told "just in case we found a table". We found 6 available. There was no real staff awareness of allergies. Our family has frequented the Smugglers for over 50 years, but never again.

Popped in here today as on our holiday here in Dawlish. The menu on line looked amazing(especially as I have a gluten intolerance) so was very excited to eat here! First off they were short staffed so people were waiting a long while for food (people next to us ordered ham, egg and chips along with a salad and carvery and were still waiting on the salad and ham, egg and chips) which can't be helped, but my issue was that the menu on line was much nicer than the one in the actual restaurant! I went for a gluten free carvery as the other options didn't appeal to me and my partner had a normal carvery. I was told my gf Yorkshire pudding would be brought to the table but none arrived and the 2 staff on were busy for me to ask. The carvery was very average and not very enticing with pale roast potatoes and the only appealing veg being the carrots! The guy doing the carvery needs to smile more. We unfortunately were disappointed and won't return here again.

Freshly carved succulent meats (a trio of beef, pork & turkey) lovely and tender, even the beef. To me the star was the turkey and I am not a great lover of turkey but that was soooo good. There was a good variety of perfectly cooked veg, I could have just had the veg and gravy on its own as they were so nice, not your usual warm, limp veg served at most carveries. The prices were on the higher side but still affordable. The food was either overcooked or undercooked. And it was cold. The carvery had a selection. Not a large selection but a selection which was decent. All 3 meats were cold. The beef was not to my liking and very pink which would had been fine if it didn't bring on hypothermia. I'm sure all the "complaints" are because it was a quieter reaustraunt and didn't have the best equipment to keep the food warm over periods of time. It's nothing compared to a Toby carvery but please don't let this put you off. It's a lovely place with lovely people but be aware you may be disappointed. However I'm still stuffed!

some of the best food I’ve had recently! full of flavour. The belly pork was cooked to perfection. The burger was one of the yummiest ones I have had in a long time with nice thick bacon. Sticky toffee pudding was nice and light, although the sauce was a little too sweet, but I guess that is personal preference. Didn't have to wait too long for service. Dog friendly pub, only certain parts allowed, but it's nice and spacious. If you like a carvery it's a good place to come. Would recommend a visit.

It was pretty quiet when we were there, but staff were friendly and helpful. Food was nice (really liked my mushroom dish), except for the dough balls which were... Dense... To say the least. It would be nice if there was a bit more by way of vegetarian options as although I enjoyed mine very much, not all vegetarians like mushrooms and there wasn't much else to choose from. It would be nice if there were a children's fish and chips option as well as it seems a bit of a no brainer for a place like that, and I don't want to spend £17 on a massive portion too big for my child to eat. Lovely views and nicely decorated. We enjoyed our meal a lot.

Vast improvement from our last visit 1 year ago. Service then was shoddy and food mediocre. Visited today, both service and food greatly improved. The Carvery was amazing, we arrived just after the carvery closed (2.30) but Chef came out and extended the time for us. We will be back again

We visited on a Sunday with the family for a carvery and weren't disappointed. The roast lunch was excellent and the staff really made us welcome, nothing was too much trouble for them.

Went with a family of 6 adults and two children. Most of the adults had the carvery which was said to be good. However, I ordered the seafood linguine which was smothered in a tomato sauce attempting to hide a lack seafood. I should have refused it but was hungry after a long day. Added to the problems was the fact that the carvery eaters were told they would be warned when the non carvery meal would be served so that they could queue and we could eat together. We weren’t warned so I ended up eating the linguine on my whilst the others were served in a large queue. Another table suffered this as well. I used to go here in the past but I won’t be returning after this visit.

On our arrival in to our caravan park in Dawlish Warren, we were discussing where to have dinner, a fellow holiday maker recommended the Smugglers Inn. It is a lovely pub/restaurant with a stunning view. The Carvery was delicious, on the pricier end but huge portions. Even the 'light bite' portion was pretty much a full size carvery haha My teenage nephew and I shared their pizza, chicken wings and chips - which was delicious. The menu isn't crammed full, but there is a choice for everyone. Highly recommend this place. It gets very busy to advise you book in advance.

Views from this place are beautiful. The staff were friendly. The food was substandard. Don't know if it was because we were eating past 8pm and had been a really hot day, but the fish goujons were dry, the hunters chicken was dry, the burgers were alright but the grill probably needed a scrape. The ratatouille mac n cheese, don't quite know what I was expecting, but was ratatouille pasta with cheese on top. Bread was a part baked baguette cooked, but was tasty. Did find a bit of plastic in my pasta though. When I say a bit, it was a 3 cm shard. Perhaps try it earlier in the day rather than before the chefs due to go home.

Nice carvery and steak pie, we ate indoors as the Seagulls were swarming outside, I don't know if this is an ongoing problem, but keeping vacated tables clear in a timely manner may help. I would definitely recommend this place if you are in the area.

Firstly took ages to be greeted and was not even that busy. Secondly the food wait was awful, awaiting carvery person to show up… carvery was awful! Frozen food being used apart from meat at near on £17 a head is disgusting there is a chain called Toby carvery who in use to think we’re awful but Atleast they charge £8 a head and there stuff is home made! Very annoyed after spending over a 100 pound for frozen vegetables rosters that looked like new potatoes! Lacked in flavour gravy bland meat mediocre! Only reason for stars was waitress offering my dogs some meat from carvery, at best that’s who it should be for!

Terrible food and not particularly amazing service either. The burger was so tough and dry, so I couldn't eat it. A pie my son had was chewy. The fish my husband had was also overcooked. Eaten here a few years back, and it was fine, not amazing, but fine for standard pub food. Wouldn't not eat there again

We were a party of seven people who visited this pub on New Year’s Eve, based on a recommendation. We live locally so thought we would give it a try. First minor problem was that the guest ales were “off” so the only ale left was Doom Bar – not the end of the world but poor management, given the day! Drinks and food were ordered from very pleasant bar staff. The drinks were varied but included one of a well-known white wine. The person who had requested that particular drink took one taste and declared it “was not nice”. I had a taste and agreed with her. Another member of our party who has extensive experience in the restaurant trade also agreed that it also had an unpleasant smell. In his opinion it was probably from an open bottle which had become contaminated. I said that I would get another drink for her and went back to the bar taking the offending wine. I ordered and paid for the replacement before saying to the server that I was not asking for a refund or replacement (I had just purchased the replacement) but the wine she had given me a few minutes before was “past its sell-by-date” and maybe she should discard the bottle. That is when the manager overheard and immediately intervened saying “if I didn’t like the taste that was my problem, I shouldn’t have ordered it!”. When I tried to point out again, I was not seeking a refund or replacement (I do not support customers who eat half a meal before complaining and / or refuse to pay – the trade has enough issues to cope with) the manager then said “there is nothing wrong with the wine (she didn’t attempt to smell or taste it) so there was nothing to discuss” as she walked away. Clearly in her world the customer is always wrong. These customers will not be returning which is a shame because the staff were very pleasant and the food, when we got it, was perfectly acceptable, hence the 2 stars.
