We came on a busy Sunday and the one star is for their inclusion of kids toys and their help with ingredient information. Everything else is shocking. We were first told that the wait for food would be half an hour which we understood - in fact I was pleased as it showed time was (I thought) being dedicated to making the food. I asked about the ingredients of the fish finger sandwich, in particular, the tartare sauce. They helpfully showed the 'Waitrose own' branded tartare bottle and it's ingredients. We then found a table to see they did not have enough high chairs - 4 in total. Considering the attached John Lewis actually sells high chairs this is a little concerning considering the size of the cafe. Luckily the toys came in handy and a helpful server found us one eventually. Then the food came out. Shocking. I don't know why I concerned myself with the tartare sauce as there was so little of it, I wondered why they even bothered to pay for the extra ingredients. I couldnt taste any of it. The wrap was also meant to come with gherkins - enter the smallest, most shrivelled, dry gherkin you have ever seen. The fishfinger was also a Waitrose finest which I have purchased from the supermarket and enjoyed but this was over-cooked in a dry wrap. Inedible. Sadly they have caught a pregnant woman in a mood, but nothing grinds my gears more than a cafe run by the most expensive supermarket we have and the food is quite obviously just a money making exercise. And to wait half an hour for it- what were the cooks doing in there? A perfect time to promote their overpriced food and it's utterly awful. Will not be returning - my pregnant craved rant is over!

Decided to have a coffee after shopping at John Lewis and before heading for the Waitrose shop. Never visited before but very disappointed. The flat white coffee was awful, nearly cold and hideous taste. Queued for ages as well. Knives and forks and spoons looked dirty some still had soup stuck to them where they hadn't been washed properly. Why is this so badly run?? I really don't understand it. Looking at the reviews it appears to have been badly run for years. Very sad John Lewis!

This is the second time I have attempted to be served at the instore bar. The first time so little of the menu was available I didn't bother; busy, delivery problems, whatever, it happens. This time it was a quiet time, no hordes, just two ladies. I sat down with the wife, no staff. Waited 5 minutes, then went to find someone. Found someone stacking shelves who said someone would be along shortly (perhaps I assumed wrongly that they would find the errant member of staff) so I returned to the table. After 20 minutes no one had appeared and there is no way to order via QR code either. The one on the corner of the table only allows you to do your shopping from the bar. How lazy do you think people are? So, highly disgrutled, we left the bar and went to collect our Sushi order. Having done so we passed someone offering free samples of a sub-standard rosé. My wife said that she was likely to be the bar lady shifting remnants from an open bottle. My comment in reply is not printable here. Waitrose needs: 1. Better hospitality management 2. Better training in stock management and customer care 3. More staff awareness 4. An ipad with a qr code management system.

This is a review for the in-store wine bar, not the cafe. Off the shelf fresh cold meat cuts and fish with cheese and bread, plus wine or fizz at prices you can’t beat. Sit at the bar or at a table, hidden from the crowd by the drinks section of the store. Never too busy, but always a good atmosphere which is saying something in a supermarket! And the staff are great.

Unfortunately we arrived where for around 20 minutes the queue had not moved. A customer asked the server whether anyone could help me. No smiles or motivation from any staff I saw. The cappacino was luke warm at best in a "expresso" sized cup which is supposed to be regular. The bacon roll at £4.95 was served in the smallest roll possible with strips of processed bacon. Could be so much better

I came in on Saturday, and had a lovely lunch. It was incredibly busy. However, there was no tables free. if you looked around the café there were people sitting there just reserving a table. This is all okay if a table is for two people however, on a couple of occasions that day I saw people reserving a table that was meant for four people, and there was only two people. I myself, could not get a table and I asked whether I could sit at a table which was for four people and the lady at the table refused despite the fact that there was only one other person that she was going to be sitting with. As there are so many selfish people, who have no regard for other people, perhaps Waitrose could stop people reserving tables like other places have. The tables for four are just two tables put together which can easily be split. So, if someone is selfish enough to sit at a four seater table, then somebody else can take the other table with the two chairs to make it fair. Apart from this, I love coming to the café, the food is wonderful and the staff are very friendly and efficient. Sadly, there's always one that spoils it

We had been out all day and I didn’t want to cook that evening. We thought a McDonalds would be sufficient but the car park was rammed so we decided to go to Waitrose and see what we could find. The cafe was still open but there were no customers. My husband asked if they were still serving food , it was ten to six, and was told that the kitchen was open till six and they were still serving. We ordered two hamburgers , a portion of chips and two coffees. Within minutes our order arrived. Delicious. Shirley, who served us, went off duty at six leaving two lads at the counter. She was absolutely super; attentive and full of good humor. Not a trace of being annoyed that two customers had arrived 10 minutes before her shift finished as we have experienced elsewhere. The lads were super lovely too. What a happy, delightful experience. So glad we went to Waitrose.

Why does the cafe exist? It's either understaffed or not staffed. This Sunday I went in with my daughter for brunch at 12pm to be informed very brusquely by a member of staff that they only served hot food until 11:30. This, despite the board above her head advertising Breakfast and Brunch. Brunch by definition does not end at 11:30. Either do not advertise what you do not offer or educate your obviously under trained staff what the terms advertised mean. Probably worth thinking about scrapping the cafe and expanding the shop into the space.

We were one of AT LEAST 4 or 5 couples / families that had to wait an hour for our lunch between 13:55 and 14:55 on Saturday 18th March. The communication between the kitchen and serving staff seemed to be non-existent and I asked the young waitress on 3 occasions for an update on our food without a proper answers. I saw multiple plates of differing foods sit on the kitchen service counter for at least 15 minutes. To add to the wait (we were told 20 minutes initially) , my wife and I ordered the chicken Caesar salad and expected much more than we received. Overall, it seemed as if there was no organisation occurring between the ordering, kitchen and serving team. Not at all what you’d expect from John Lewis.

We visited for lunch yesterday. Apart from the fact that no hot meals were being served due to staff sickness, I was told the only gluten free food available was a chicken sandwich and a flapjack, and the chicken sandwiches were sold out. My husband ordered his food and I went and bought a sandwich in the Waitrose store downstairs. Next up, flapjack - all sold out. The staff said there was nothing they could do, so I spoke with the lovely lady at the Welcome desk who said she would speak to the manager. I hope she did, as to have nothing gluten free on offer in a cafe these days is inexcusable. It makes people with a gluten allergy feel unwelcome, and certainly we would not eat there again. The whole place looked and felt uncared for, and I'm afraid we would give it a wide berth in future.

Went to John Lewis while we was there decided to goto the cafe, being this was at 12pm you would expect fully stocked shelves especially for children. When we reached the till we asked if there was any children sandwiches to go with the meal deal bag that they advertise. We asked if they could make a sandwich. Blank expression and with "NO" we asked if there was water for our daughter, was pointed in the direction of a tap, which was not an issue however would expect a cup to put it in. We decided on something off the children's menu most places when ordering children's food would come with either chips, mash, peas, beans etc, not Waitrose only the one item ordered having to pay extra for chips etc. Again communication was terrible when my wife asked for a scone blank expression when there was a tray full of them to the side. So decided to leave it go else where. Worst experience I have had, Waitrose need seriously look at this cafe, Dorking Waitrose cafe by far a nicer experience, maybe further staff training required........

I had lunch with my friend in JL cafe today. We are both eating healthily (SlimmingWorld) and wanted a salad or jacket potato. The sign on the menu said jacket potatoes would be ‘back soon’! For goodness sake! They have Waitrose downstairs - full of potatoes! Apparently they can only have a certain type. The salads were not appealing (whipped feta for one spicy chicken for another). I ended up ordering tomato soup. My friend had bacon, poached egg, tomato and beans. The staff member asked why my friend didn’t order the full English? My friend had to explain that she didn’t want the sausage or toast. We wanted fruit and there was one brown banana on display. We asked if they had any fresh ones. They fetched one. I had to ask for another one! We ordered hot drinks. We paid and went to wait for our food. Eventually someone came to ask if my friend wanted each of her breakfast items on separate plates!!! Please see attached a picture of the dead flowers by the water dispenser. Come on JL - you can do better than this both in tens of the food offered and in the attitude of your staff.

I think the people leaving negative reviews have an ulterior motive. The food is fine, the service is fine and it’s not expensive. It’s a cafe. It’s not a fast moving coffee shop and it doesn’t purport to be Claridges either. It’s a cafe which employs a wide range of people in a department store folks and it’s absolutely fine. I don’t get quite why people are taking photos of their uneaten leftovers on trays-what’s that meant to signify apart from the fact that you’re a messy eater? Go, John Lewis.

I had to pop into the store today for an exchange because I received some damaged glasses. I had my one year old with me in a pushchair. I headed to customer services, waited in line, and when served was advised that returns is upstairs. Not ideal but fair enough. I went upstairs to the returns department and whist being served , was asked if I had the new item that I would like to exchange the glasses with, I did not. The lady who served me then advise that I needed to go back down stairs find the glasses come back upstairs, in order for her to carry out the exchange. She could see that I was struggling and the one-year-old had lost his patience, also pushing the buggy whilst holding a box of glasses, it’s not a particularly easy thing to do. I asked if they were in stock, to which she said she didn’t know, so I asked if she could check before I wasted my time going back downstairs to come back upstairs again. She checked the stock and confirmed they had 2, but no help or offer of assistance to go and get the glasses for me. I went back downstairs, eventually found the glasses section, and couldn’t find what I was looking for. I had to ask another person to assist me, they looked around and also check the stock room. There was no stock so I had to go back upstairs to complete my return. I am not upset that returns was upstairs, know that the item wasn’t in stock, not even that the item is arrived damaged. Fair enough these things happen. I was very disappointed in that at no point did the server offer me any kind of assistance seeing that I was struggling with the pushchair. I expect a higher standard of service from a company like John Lewis. If you intend to visit the store I would suggest that you go without your children, as he won’t be offered any additional assistance.

Went in store to purchase a macbook. Spent ages deciding which one suited my needs best. Two young male members of staff were standing nearby, neither of them approached me to offer some help as you’d normally expect from a store yet I was browsing for ages at this one shelf. Could have really used some advise. The staff members were too busy discussing their weekend antics and what time they were finishing their shifts to bother helping me. Felt like I couldn’t approach them to ask for help because they didn’t appear to have a respectable level of professionalism about them. Gave up and continued browsing upstairs... and within 30 seconds of being up there I was offered help by a female member of staff. Declined her offer as I felt as she wasn’t in the electrical section that she might have just told me to go back downstairs. If one member of staff offers assistance this is obviously the standard for John Lewis so why do you allow your staff the opportunity to be negligent and lazy. Not impressed.

This was good but the egg was tiny - a larger egg would have made a lot of difference to my enjoyment of the dish. Family thought for Waitrose the quality of the bacon and sausages could be better. The counter staff were very pleasant but I couldn't understand why they were so slow - there was a short queue and all they had to do was take an order, make coffee and take payment, but it took absolutely ages. Recently I have moved to Horsham with my Husband and we were delighted to find a new Waitrose and John Lewis Home on our doorstep. It's great for picking up dinner for that evening and all those other bits and bobs you always need. Parking is free if you spend in store or arrive post 6pm. You also get a free hot drink if you subscribe to a free my Waitrose card.

For such smart stores this cafe was hugely disappointing. The service was slow, the drinks were tepid and there was no gluten free choices. Seeing as Waitrose sell GF bread I was amazed that they don't offer GF sandwiches or wraps, the only savoury choice was soup (without the bread), potato omelette or a side order of chips. Even the pre-packaged salads had couscous or bulgar wheat in them. My husband had a pulled pork wrap which was nicely presented and tasted really good (apparently). Then I looked at cakes, quite a large selection of fresh cakes but again not a single GF choice, not even flapjack. The only choice was some pre-packed Honeybuns tiffin/brownie which were tiny. I settled for just having a hot chocolate, which actually wasn't very hot, just tepid, and my husband said the same for the latte. There were plenty of empty tables but a lot were not cleared. The service was friendly enough but seemed chaotic. We won't be back!

This is the second time we have been here for coffee and cake and the selection of cake available was disappointing. A month ago we went in the morning and I had flapjack as the cakes hadn't been delivered, a bit odd as they are next to a supermarket full of cakes and cake making ingredients! Today I went at 3.30 and there not many cakes " because it is near the end of the day" - again a bit odd as surely most people want cake in the afternoon! Such a shame as the cafe area is clean and inviting and the staff seemed friendly.

Having visited this store for a successful and enjoyable Saturday mooch around the sale, and with time to spare on the parking ticket, we decided to have a quick light lunch. What a mistake! After 10 minutes queuing to order, it was over 40 minutes before mediocre food was produced, by which time we had long finished our tea & coffee before it went completely cold. It was evident other customers were getting equally restless, but staff had no idea how to be more efficient or customer-focussed. We had planned to finish with a quick shop in Waitrose, but no time left and we weren't feeling charitable to the place any more, so headed for Sainsbury's.

This café is in the John Lewis At Home store, which has lots of parking, is spacious and stocked with excellent products. The café itself is light and airy, again with plenty of space and very modern. The food is, as always, first class, fresh and tasty. It's great for a cuppa and scrummy cakes or for a more substantial lunch. My salad was really excellent.

The Horsham John Lewis is a homeware branch and if you love JL you will love it! The quality is great and brands and products so stylish. The parking is good and it is easy to order goods online and pick up the next day. The staff are helpful and Waitrose is there for groceries too!

There are two Waitrose cafes here - one in the main store and one another, larger one on the top floor. Both offer the usual mix of snacks. Parking is free for up to 30 minutes - just time for a quick coffee and cake.

Yes the food takes 20 minutes or so, but it's made fresh to order and tasted very good. It would take that long in a restaurant, so not sure why people think this place should be different!

Service good but a bit slow. Food excellent. Big issue is that it resembles a creche from 11:00 onwards. Counted eighteen pushchairs and countless children. Big safety issue with all the pushchairs blocking the gangways between tables: would be very hard to evacuate in an emergency. They need to provide a 'buggy park' just outside the restaurant and ban pushchairs from entering the actual restaurant, which is what a number of local coffee/tea shops now do. Also saw baby having it's nappy changed on one of the sofa benches whilst we were eating: not very nice and certainly not very hygenic. mentioned it to staff but they said they didn't know how to deal with it.

This was our fifth visit to the deli set close to the wine section. The deli is quite busy and there are only a few tables but the service was great and the platter excellent while being washed down with the house wine. Previously the portions were larger for the same price but it was still worth the visit.

This was our first visit to the Waitrose cafe following a purchase at the adjoining John Lewis store. Tables were clean with good availability of cutlery and condiments. Coffee was average, with a limited choice of pastries. There was also hot food available such as a English breakfast to sandwiches/bacon rolls etc. There were lots of staff, but appeared to be rushed and somewhat disorganised. Not a great atmosphere and some comfy seating would also be more welcome. John Lewis cafe I think gives a better experience and it's a shame that Horsham didn't decide to have one when designing this store.

Waited for ever, very disappointing for such a fabulous store, the coffee cup was huge and all overflowing, both the scone and tea cake felt like last weeks, what amazes me is that places like this continue to be busy, while the quality is of a low stantard

I decided to pop to the cafe as a break from working at home. I love Chai Lattes so had actually decided to come here because of that, i queued, ordered my Chai but the lady said they hadn't served that for at least 6 months... Why is it on the menu then? What other things are on the menu that they don't actually serve? This particular lady was also quite barky and rude from the moment I got to the cash desk. However the lady making my tea was nice and the lady who brought my lunch... So they made up for their colleagues 'frankly, i dont give a S@%&' demeanour.

We popped into the cafe for a quick coffee. So wish we hadn't. It was 12:45 so expected the cafe to be busy. We queued for 15 minutes with only one person serving. When we were eventually served the young girl was surly and did not smile or offer any greeting. When we tried to find a table we where met with a grid lock of buggies and pushchairs. We had to have our drinks on separate tables. The management need to implement a policy regarding the placing of buggies and pushchairs to accommodate their other customers. Yes we did ask two young mothers if they would move their buggies we were told that they were waiting for two more friends so no they couldn't.

Met my family here today for coffee and lunch. We were not permitted to sit on one of the three long vacant sofas inside to avoid the rain outside. We therefore decided not to have proper lunch. Sitting outside, one toasted sandwich, two milkshakes, one coffee and tea cost me well over £30. My French is very good but to describe my Cheese and Tomato toasty just in the French language was absolutely ridiculous and PRETENTIOUS. The person who took our order had no sense of humour and could not have cared less. Owners of this place please note, the most important asset a company has is its staff - and yours looked so overworked. I will not be returning to your plush sofas which customers are not allowed to sit on!

Thought I would give this another try after my last visit over a year ago. No. Just no. No improvement whatsoever. It has all the glitz and glamour deco but none of the substance. The owner should look into the best service and food available elsewhere. The Swedish cafe in Horsham are spot on. Take a leaf out of their book for improvement.

The best Indian our family have tasted, authentic and full of flavour. Staff very friendly and kind. Floors could do with a good clean. However the food is incredible and outweighs any other factor. Will definitely be visiting again and pass on our positive experience to friends and family.
