We stopped for lunch, and had great cheese toastie, carrot cake and coffee/tea. But no crisps ? Theres a supermarket the other side of the wall, don't even need to go outdoors. But apart from that, very nice, thanks.

On my way home from an appointment I was delayed in traffic by an accident on the A4 Keynsham By-pass. All traffic, including heavy trucks, that were heating west, were being diverted through Keynsham’s notoriously complex town-centre one-way-system (featuring many narrow minor roads). I decided to head into the Broadmead Lane Trading Estate for a hot drink and a bit of shopping. The plan being that, by the time I was finished, the traffic would have eased with the reopening of the by-pass. I called into the Waitrose supermarket and headed straight to the in-store Café. I had to queue for about 15 minutes as the café was busy. It was probably busier, because I was unlikely to be the only one with the same hot-drink idea. The service was a bit sluggish; with the two counter staff not really working well as a team. I decided that as it was 11:30 I would have an early-lunch here. The menu offered a range of ‘Festive Feasts’ and I was attracted to the ‘Cheesy Rosti & Ham Hock Rarebit’; which looked scrummy from the picture on the menu-poster behind the servery. I also ordered an Americano Coffee with hot milk and the coffee-making started immediately. The customer ahead of me had also ordered a coffee from the other server, and his tab on the cash-till was cancelled by my server. He was asked to pay the £2.70 for MY coffee, this caused a short debate between the servers. My coffee was presented without milk; so I asked, and the milk was provided. I was given a numbered stand to place on my table, so that I would receive my food order. My server called my food order ‘Rabbit’, so I corrected her, but that went over her head. The other server then mock-assured me there was no ‘Rabbit’ in my food. My coffee was above-average in taste and temperature, and enjoyed. It was however well-short of a great coffee; strong with a burnt-caramel taste; as available in other cafés that I frequent. Sadly the food was below-average and didn’t correspond to the image on the aforementioned menu poster. The egg yolk was not at all runny (in-fact part of the yolk was solid). The ‘Rosti’ just wasn’t Rosti at all. Rosti is a dish consisting mainly of potatoes, sautéed or shallow-fried in a pan, until golden. It should have been crisp on the outside, with distinct layers on the inside. The ‘Rosti’ here was just thinly sliced potato stuck together with a thin layer of cheese, and it had zero crispness. If I hadn’t been told there was ham hock in the this rarebit then I would not have realised. On the plus side it was hot (well it had been nuked) and there was an overall tangy taste. If this is the best that Waitrose can produce for Festive snacks, then I think they should stick to something less complex like toast, and then add a sprig of fresh basil.

Visited on Sunday at about 1130hrs. I ordered a full breakfast but was told they had run out of sausages. I asked if I could have the breakfast without sausages and I was told yes, but I couldn't have any replacement items as this would mess up the displayed calorific value. Although the store sells sausages they cannot use them in the cafe as they can only sell sausages approved for content, allergies etc. I settled for a bacon roll which was hard and dry with no butter. I won't eat here again.

Don’t visit here any more very cold and un inviting people going in and out of door right through the year bringing in cold air . Too big and sprawling no atmosphere . I would close it down and start selling John Lewis products eg any day clothes etc . The whole area is wasted space and needs reorganising . Cafe needs to be smaller and inside the store with no doors opening with people coming and going in and out . It needs someone with some imagination to look at it with fresh eyes . Shame as the store is a nice one and we visit often but ignore the vast cold cafe .

This is a convenient location to meet and swap children after babysitting. We have visited lots of times and always find the service and food good. I know a lot of people don’t like the withdrawal of the free drinks but it was too good to last. It’s not cheap but you get nice drinks and good food at a reasonable price. We are pensioners but in the past other pensioners would grumble if my grand daughter made a noise and didn’t like it when I pointed out that she was probably the only one paying for her drink. The toilets were a mess but that’s down to the customers.

Sadly unable to have lunch here today because there was no gluten free options such as a sandwich or roll. Not even soup. Staff seemed thrown by our request and handed us apiece of paper with various ticks denoting various food allergies. They were unable to get us a gfree roll from the store but said we were welcome to go and buy it and eat it in the restaurant. They said they had no where to prepare gluten free food which we were surprised by. It's not difficult to have a small area for gfree food prep and the store sells gfree products anyway. Surely a bowl of gfree soup and a piece of gfree bread isn't too much trouble!!!

When this bright Cafe opened a few years ago I was really pleased but then as The London Business School tells us there is nothing more difficult in business than managing expectations!!! I had great expectations of this Cafe especially when you combine the excellent quality of the retail food side of Waitrose with an in-house restaurant ....... of course, it should be a masterclass of excellence. Then the reality kicked in. This place is worse than Gucci in New York...... and their philosophy is simply to antagonise their customers on every visit. I guess it's all down to management and staffing levels. The staff have a bimodal age distribution (not a bell curve)...... the very mature ladies and the very young female students. Mix them together and you get a feeling of wading through molasses. Absolutely none of these people have a service mentality or would win a job in a High Street Cafe. I doubt if any of the managers actually know anything about bottle necks in distribution or customer satisfaction or retention of same. The queue is always so slow and frustrating. I only have an hour for lunch and waste 15 to 20 minutes in the queue every time I go there for lunch. Hence, I'm always stressed gulping my food before rushing back to work - 10 minutes drive away in traffic. Why do they always run out of soup just when I get to the top of the queue? Yet, 20 feet away the supermarket sells the best soup you can buy in Bristol. How difficult is it to warm up some soup in a microwave? How difficult is it to make a cup of black Americano? How many employees need to stand beside the till - each one doing a different job - no multitasking here? I suspect the real problems starts with poor training and a with a failure to listen to what the customer orders. The frustration and exasperation must surely be driving customers away. In my opinion, it's a 'Golden' opportunity wasted. Any fool knows that if you provide wholesome, healthy food with excellent service under a brand name like Waitrose you should have a winner....... so, what's the problem with Waitrose management? Perhaps if I return there for lunch next year they might have improved slightly ....... anything but the continuing downward spiral until it hits rock bottom. This is classical textbook stuff on "How not to do it and what's wrong with service in England". However, their toilets are clean and well managed.
