Unfortunately, the food was poor, and the service lacklustre. I would avoid this restaurant. The manager in particular was not interested in providing a reasonable service.

Extremely welcoming pub with delicious food and great service. All staff were very attentive and brought food out quickly. Don't skip starters, bone marrow and pardon peppers were excellent (muhammara was a personal highlight!). Roast beef was delicious with very generous portions and you definitely can't miss the cheesy leeks!!

Beware of their very strict and misleading cancellation policy and be warned, they will keep your deposit regardless! Unfortunately I had to cancel a table the day before (I gave them more than 24 hours notice). Their cancellation policy says £10/person within 48 hrs or £20/person on the day or no show. I have sent them a photo of my phone log to prove I cancelled the day before ie. At the very most I should have been charged £10/person but they have taken £20/person and have refused to refund any of it. BE WARNED: They will enforce this policy without telling you. There will be no courtesy call or email to remind you of your reservation. And they will even take MORE money than is owed. Having called and taken this up with The Manager, when I asked for his name 3 times he replied, ‘I’m sorry I can’t hear you’ (even though he obviously could, because he replied)! Very surprising behaviour from a Michelin guide restaurant. Update: Regarding the incredibly sarcastic response to this post from the restaurant; this is absolute nonsense, factually incorrect and deceiving! The reservation was NOT for a Friday it was for Sunday 24th Nov at 4pm and cancelled over 24hrs in advance on 23rd Nov at 1:19pm. This cancellation procedure was in line with the advice on the Opentable FAQs and so the restaurant should have partially refunded my initial deposit but have instead sent me rude replies and fraudulently kept ALL of my deposit! As evidence, I’ve attached the Opentable reservation that automatically appeared in my diary when I booked the table and also a screenshot of the call log when I cancelled the table. It’s indisputable evidence that has also been sent to The Chequers but they have sent rude replies to my emails and ignored others! I regularly frequent fine dining establishments and would never have expected this level of unprofessionalism from a reputable Michelin guide restaurant. It’s been shocking and upsetting.

Came here with the hubby for a Sunday roast in Bath! It was definitely one of the best roasts we've had in the UK. We started with the scallops with garlic butter and herbs topped with a toasted bread crumb. For mains, we both ordered the pork belly roast and for dessert the sticky toffee pudding. My favourite of the three was the scallops. Mind you, I am a huge fan of seafood, so I'm always a bit biased towards my seafood. The scallops were perfectly cooked, with a nice butter and herb flavour. The toasted bread crumbs added a nice texture contrast. The pork roast was super tender - you can pull it apart with your fork. The skin had a nice crisp to the skin but was a bit on the sticky side as opposed to a dry crisp. The pork had a mild Asian five spice flavour. We also had a side of cheesey leeks, which wasn't as heavy as we thought it would be. It was our first time having cheesey leeks and we definitely enjoyed it. The sticky toffee pudding was topped with a ginger flavoured ice cream, which was slightly different. The sticky toffee pudding was served warm so the contrast in temperature between the pudding and the ice cream was nice. I think I would prefer a clotted cream or vanilla flavoured ice cream instead of the ginger. The staff here were super friendly and attentive. We definitely enjoyed our roast here and would recommend checking this place out!

Best roast I’ve had in the UK so far

One of the best meals I’ve ever had. Will for sure come back next time I’m in Bath!

The taste and service are worthy of Michelin, unlike other restaurants that automatically charge tips by default, and the price is reasonable. The portion and presentation of the pork cheek as an appetizer are at the same level as the main course elsewhere. Although the sauce is very salty, the meat itself is very soft. It is recommended. The venison I ordered for the main course was also very tender and had no strange smell. The potatoes were roasted with a knife and were very fragrant. For dessert, I ordered sticky pudding. Personally, I don’t really like this dessert, but I ordered it for Christmas. However, they still made it very fragrant and delicious. If I come to Bath again, I will focus on this restaurant as many times as I can eat there. It is much better than other restaurants.

If you look for a quality gastro pub/restaurant in Bath then this is your place. Run by a competent, friendly crew guarantees a good experience every time you visit, whether it is just a drink at the bar after work or you want to take your partner out for a civilized dining participation. This Michelin-starred enterprise won't disappoint you and I would recommend a visit to everyone who value good standards..

Delicious food as usual although we felt a bit rushed.

On Sunday 14.12.24 I had a roast lunch with a friend. The food was okay overall but vegetables were lacking. There wasn’t time for dessert or coffee, the people waiting made it noisy. I asked to see the manager, I didn’t raise my voice, I was calm and told the manager I was unhappy with the standards at the restaurant. Sunday evening I received an abusive phone call from the owner Kevin. I am a 73 year old woman and local resident, I was sworn at using the most vile language.

Booked a table for sunday lunch for me and the wife and from the moment we walked in until we left the staff were first class and very friendly as for the food probably one of the best sunday roasts i have eaten in the whole of the UK i did particually loved there sticky toffee pudding for desert thoroughly recomend it

The Sunday roasts were excellent and service was generally good. When we came to pay we were told that American Express was not accepted - no problem, we paid with another card. However, it later occurred to me that I had paid for coffees on our arrival with American Express. I understand the aversion to the extra fees AmEx charge, but I don’t appreciate being lied to.

Visited with my boyfriend earlier this week, had the most wonderful meal! Sophie and Aston really looked after us and were super attentive. The food was first rate, we went for the rib of beef special which couldn’t have been anything less than perfection. Was definitely the highlight of our stay and wouldn’t hesitate to return!

Food was absolutely superb. We looked for somewhere to go for a Sunday roast as were only here for the weekend and what a gem of a pub it was. The food was superb faultless to be fair. We had the scallop with cafe de Paris and the pig cheek to start both super tasty. Pork and beef roasts for main. Chocolate mousse and puffed rice, and white chocolate and buttermilk panna cotta for dessert.Only problem was, We felt like we were rushed to order, ordered food before our drinks arrived and we aren’t slow at choosing. Then rushed to clear each course. Then after three course meal and spending a good amount for our meal. I wanted an espresso martini rather than the usual coffee I would normally have after such a large meal. Unfortunately was told I only had 5 minutes left on the table. So wasn’t able to. After such an amazing meal it was a terrible way to leave and hurry out.

Came to this restaurant for my daughter’s birthday meal. The place was very neatly laid out and we had brilliant service from Evie. She was very polite and helped us by recommending food and wow was she right ! Will definitely be coming back !

wow, what a great place for a saturday night catch up. Both food and service was impeccable, with amazing cocktail options. To start a chicken terrine special and a simply great pappadele for mains 🍝. Our server Eve was very attentive and knowledgable about the menu which was great to see Will be returning soon and recommending to my friends ! thanks for a great evening ! only recommendation would be a single steak option as couldn’t find anyone to share the prime rib with (as much as it would be lovely !)

Without doubt the best meal I have ever had. The food and flavours were outstanding. The chef who I believe is named Sam, I was told is self taught. If this is true, it is quite astonishing as the level of detail and skill shown on each dish was that of a seasoned professional. I will without doubt spread the word about this lovely establishment.

Fantastic. We had bavette steak, pheasant and scallops. All beautiful quality and taste. The service was friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming.

Food and service both: no comments (in good terms); could easily be considered one of top 5 gastropubs in south west England; I got Wild Venison and several starters all were made in a unique and nib-pleasant way :) There’s just 1 reason I’m putting 1 star is that it could’ve been better if you guys got a bouncer; there were 2 drunk polish guys and one of them for no reason thrown on me his phone which was BTW probably weighing a pound; and accused me of recording him. However the staff was very operative to move me away from those hooligans. However I wouldn’t come here again just because of gonna remember the incident every time, but that’s a personal note. I strongly suggest you guys getting a bouncer and probably having an alcohol limit (some places have that and that’s amazing because no one gets so drunk that they’ll not control their actions).

All the food was amazing. Their drinks are great too and would recommend their steak and cauliflower dish. Their desserts are absolutely delicious. We would definitely come back.

We visited for a roast dinner on a Sunday evening. The pub itself had a great atmosphere and was warm with a relaxed vibe. All of the staff were fantastic and had a great demeanour and were very attentive throughout the visit. The food itself was great. The meat was cooked perfectly, potatoes were lovely and the garlic purée was a really nice addition to the dish. My only slight criticism was it took a while for us to get the bill, however staff were busy so this is understandable.

A fabulous pub with friendly service, a beautiful environment, and best of all, amazing food. I had the scallops as a starter and the version as a main, and it was probably my best meal in Bath. Put it at the top of your list.

A delicious Sunday roast! We started with the peppers on labneh which were unique and very tasty. This was followed by the beef roast, with all the sides you expect. The Yorkshire pudding was great, but just slightly overdone. We finished with a sticky toffee pudding which was to die for. This was a great pub experience!

Shared the Prime Rib and honestly, as good a beef dish as I can remember. Absolutely perfect: great after a long red-eye flight and long day walking. You know a quality meal when you eat a bit more than you thought you even wanted (We were hungry. The beef was delicious), but feel just pleasantly full, not stuffed. Nice atmosphere: lively but not too loud; everyone friendly. Besides the beef, everything else served was, well… just great. A lovely experience.

Look at this outstanding Team flying under the radar at a Gastro Pub! Hats off to this amazing Team in the kitchen & running house. Was sceptical on arrival as it seemed so casual and perhaps not what I had hoped for, however was very impressed from the moment we were seated. Arriving very early for drinks to check out the place before dining the staff were so friendly and on the ball, they took good care of us and accommodated us early. The tables are booked back to back and for good reason. Servers are funny, warm, kind and professional. The most simple starter was done to perfection. The mains by far beat all the surrounding restaurants in Bath, their venison was the best of the week! You’ll find an observation dining room upstairs where this flawless team are at work, it’s beautiful! It was like a Alain Ducasse experience within a local pub.

I had a Sunday roast and discovered its not for me. Cute place and good service. Took my friend here for her birthday, she enjoyed the food. Also found out table water is something you get charged for at Chequers 😂

By far the best meal we had in Bath! Delicious food made from scratch, served in an unpretentious atmosphere. What more could you want?

We were a group of friends who were celebrating a 50th last weekend and strolled past the pub, which looked very lovely. The male and female staff members on duty were rude from the start and so unwelcoming. Apparently all the tables inside were reserved (it was almost empty) so we chose to sit outside, and offered to wipe down the wet tables and benches as it had just been raising. We were courteous and were happy to do so, but were flung blue paper towels as if we'd done something wrong. After being told they didn't serve food,( we didn't want any) and with no smiles and rolled eyes from both staff members we took off and left. What a shame that those working that day had such terrible attitudes and were so unpleasant towards our happy group celebrating such a lovely occasion.

Overall I think this place is nice. I enjoyed my sea bass but my wife wasn’t a fan of the monkfish. The deserts were enjoyable. I’d recommend the pavlova. Service needs work. We ran out of water twice. They also get so many American tourists that the wait staff are trying to bring the tipping culture to the UK to make an extra buck. NO THANKS.

What a lovely off the beat and track restaurant. We were recommended this restaurant from two people who know Bath very well. Can honestly say this is one the best roast dinners (beef) I have had in a while. Thankyou so much to the younger waitress who made our experience so smooth and enjoyable and the waiter with light hair brilliant and attentive. Desserts also soooo lush , shout out to the chefs ! Amazing job!! P.S my boyfriend who is also a chef said it definitely lived up to expectations ! Thankyou so much ! :)

Such a lovely place ...staff so sweet and food amazing ! Great value for money as this was Fine Dining! ( we had steak & plaice) ..not a single complaint- just perfect. Highly recommended.

Just wow. From great flavors to wonderful plating, the meal was on point. Wine pairings were also spot on. Our meal ranged from tuna crudo and scallops to pork chop and sea bass. Thoughtful wine list provided lots of good options. Hospitality was very warm and inviting - felt hosted in their space. Recommend highly.

This spot is my favourite restaurant in Bath. Moved here a year ago and have always turned to Chequers as my go to whether it is with family or friends or a date, this place never disappoints. The changing menu is always in line with my own personal tastes, delivering great food every time. I hope that when people visit Bath or live in Bath that they pay a visit to this to this place as it’s truly a gem. The food was very tasty and beautifully presented. We both were very impressed. The staff were charming. I had a wonderful octopus starter followed by well seasoned sea bream and courgette spaghetti and tomato’s with gnocchi . My husband had a lamb starter the monk fish tail and clams.

Lovely roast, I had the spiced cauliflower vegan roast and even though you can’t have Yorkshire’s or the puree it was still very nice. Just a bit of a shame that for dessert the only vegan options they have is sorbet. I find dessert to be the easiest for vegans so would be good to see at least two options on there

One of Bath's best kept culinary secrets ! Friendly pub and staff outside the hustle and bustle of the city center. Had a meal to rival many of the better known culinary destinations in Bath In a relaxed & friendly casual atmosphere with very reasonable prices. Four of us ate, and all thought the food was excellent, even though we all chose a wide selection of dishes. Starters - Scallops, Humous, Peppers, Lamb Mains - 2 x Steak, Sole, Cauliflower Aston was particularly helpful in explaining the dishes. Only criticism was the toilets, which are looking very tired.

Well - ignor the occasional bad review - disgruntled folks. Service was spot on! And Sunday roast beef amazing. All delish just like my Mum from York made. Worth a detour!

Just got back to the hotel after a 1st class Sunday roast! Loved everything about our visit. Got there a bit early so had a refreshment outside before being called in when our table was ready. The service, headed up by the most welcoming Aston, was superb and the Sunday roast beef was possibly the best I've ever had. Made the celebration of my fiancee's 50th birthday very special. The sea bass was tasty and well presented. The monkfish tail was fresh and nicely done but the dish to me was spoiled by the roast chicken butter sauce or more correctly 'syrup'. It was sticky and tasteless. There was no flavour at all other than that of chives. To me this syrup did not go well and ruin the monkfish tail. Ordered half a pint of Butcombe Ale on the side but it turned out stale, like one that was left overnight in the glass at room temperature. I had better Butcombe before. The pint of Amstel was a lot better though. So the whole dining experience was not perfect in this 'Michelin' gastro pub. Will try other competitors next time. Management response: Responded yesterday Disappointing that you didn’t feel it was appropriate to communicate any of this to my team during your visit , if you had , we would happily have offered an alternative to the monkfish dish at no cost, This dish has been very popular on this menu but obviously it’s very difficult to appeal to all personal taste and as I’ve said this could have been addressed on the day. LWLW response: I did talk to both the waiter and waitress who served us that evening about the sauce. Like you, the waiter responded by saying that other diners do like the Monkfish dish. This is somewhat dismissive of my feedback. I don't think I was given any opportunity to discuss my comment further let alone any remedial measures that the restaurant might offer. The first impression is very important and clearly this was negative.

We came for Sunday lunch, we can't remember having a better one in the city, and for the quality and quantity of the ingredients and the flavours, it was great value. I had the roast beef and it was just exceptional. Service on point, really nice gastropub feel. We will be back.

For a bleak Friday evening in July this stylish restaurant was just what we needed. Food good but perhaps not amazing and the service was very courteous, however we felt quite rushed so our evening finished much earlier than anticipated. We will return but insist on a slower delivery of food.

A smashing British gastro pub. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, team very friendly and the food was sensational. I had the Dover Sole that was a real standout dish. Possibly the best sole I have had. Highly recommend it!

Brilliant Gastro Pub. Modern cuisine in a stylish setting in a great location

I went out for a meal on my birthday. The service was initially very good, but once the food arrived and I expressed dissatisfaction, the wait staff acted as if they had never dealt with a complaint before. The roast potatoes were practically inedible, the meat was poorly cooked, and the gravy lacked flavor, similar to bisto. For the price of the meal, the quality of the food should have been better. I was thoroughly disappointed with the staff's reaction to my criticism of the food. It is possible that the food is better on a less busy day or not during their Sunday roast service, but I would advise avoiding it for a roast. The Marlborough Tavern is a much better option. Additionally, the staff were unaware of the vegan options on the menu for one of our party members. They even served a non-vegan Yorkshire pudding to them. Throughly over-rated and not deserving of the high praise that seems to be thrown at them.

An amazing Sunday Roast and very friendly staff.

My wife has a garlic intolerance. Chequers phoned me to persuade me to cancel as they would find this difficult. Garlic is in all the marinades, I was informed. Nearly all restaurants we've been to can easily accommodate us as they make everything fresh. Makes me wonder... are the meals pre-prepared? Maybe we dodged the proverbial bullet.

Perfect place for more adventurous eaters with good options for boring palates too. Really high standard of food and service.

My wife and I dined here in May 21st for dinner on a recommendation from a local tour guide we had employed earlier in the day. We had a delightful dinner in this traditionally decorated, but up market gastro pub. Dinner surprised to the upside, with the broiled scallop starter and grilled hangar main particularly sublime. The service was a little short of expectations , but not for lack of trying. Just a bit under staffed for the crowded dining room. Highly recommended.

A nice restaurant in a beautiful setting. Near the Circus and the Royal Crescent. Friendly staff who are happy to please. The dishes are all beautifully prepared and delicious. And that combined with fair prices makes this a must-do in Bath. We had the bread with delicious butter, burrata, scallop and turbot.

Very disappointing Sunday Roast. Dry potatoes, tasteless jus, bland lamb. Very nice venue and nice service though, but does not make up for the poor food.

We came to Chequers for our first Sunday roast in the UK. Unfortunately, the meat was very fatty and Yorkshire pudding was nigh burnt. We were also more or less ignored by our waitress after we got the food. The rest of the food was good and the atmosphere is good.

The roast lamb was delicious. Pretty to look at. The potatoes were perfectly fried. The cheesy leeks were phenomenal. Service was wonderful and enjoyed watching the cooks prepare through the glass window. We shared the Rhubarb Pavlova for dessert and it was expertly prepared and served.

Drinks are way over priced. Crappy glasses & not cold at all for what you pay. Don't bother. £10-20 for 2 people for w drink each.

We went to this pub to celebrate my Granddaughters 17th birthday . The first time she was legally allowed to have a small glass of wine with her meal BUT they refused to allow her to. She had taken her passport as proof of age. It spoilt my time at the Chequers I will not be returning.

Really delicious food with very attentive service. Highly recommend, especially the gnocchi. We got the bread and butter (delicious), Cantabrian anchovies (very good), pig cheek terrine (very good), triple cooked chips (were ok, a bit soft), pan fried duck breast (good but could have used a touch more salt), and pan fried gnocchi (AMAZING, truly unforgettable). We also got the vanilla creme brulee and the sticky toffee pudding for dessert, both were great.

8 of us went for Sunday lunch to celebrate my husband's 60th birthday. The roast dinners were absolutely delicious - especially the crackling on the pork, the Yorkshire puddings and the leeks in cheese sauce! I cannot praise their customer service enough - the staff were all very friendly and helpful on the day but, on top of that, we had a slight issue which I emailed about the same day and it was resolved within half an hour. Very professional and customer related. We will definitely be back and look forward to trying some different foods. Thank you all SO much for helping to make my husband's birthday so special.

Incredible Sunday roast! The gravy was flavourful. Soft, tender pork belly that melted in our mouths and the crispy but soft on the inside Yorkshire pudding. Portion size is very generous and incredibly attentive staff. Would 100% recommend and will return again when back in Bath.

I recently dined at The Chequers restaurant and had an outstanding experience, largely thanks to the exceptional service provided by Ashleigh and Veda. Their attentiveness and knowledge of the menu elevated our evening. The food was high quality and delicious, delivering balance and creativity with each dish. Thank you for making our visit memorable Recommend the Lamb and scallops also, don't give the bread a miss!!! 5*

I just popped here to have a drink outside with my husband and son. Unfortunately, it seems the manager is a man on some sort of power trip. I went inside to use the bathroom and perhaps he thought that I was not a paying customer, and shouted aggressively at me as I made my way downstairs ‘ARE YOU OK???’ When I explained I was just using the toilet he mumbled something about me just ignoring him and walking past the bar. I mean, if he did speak to me and I didn’t hear him, is that really a reason to shout at me in front of the restaurant… his whole demeanour was unwelcoming and unfriendly and it just left a bad taste in my mouth about the place sadly.

Booked this for a special birthday treat as we live around the corner. Greeted rudely by bar staff who obviously couldn’t be bothered. Taken upstairs - nobody there to give us a drinks menu. Luckily kind family on next table gave us theirs. Drinks took 25 minutes to arrive which came after food!!! No offer of condiments etc. following our complaint the lady responded that the drinks had taken a long time as we had requested a daiquiri! I asked why our order of tap water hadn’t been delivered if this was the case and if we’d been told that making the drink would take almost half an hour then we wouldn’t have ordered. The food was smothered in gravy. Avoid this place there are much better, more efficient, politer places in Bath. We left without eating. Staff need training.

Wonderful from start to finish. Amazing food, good wine list, and great location. But it’s the staff that really made this visit top notch. They strike just the right balance between professional, knowledgeable and efficient, but also friendly and chatty. Will definitely be back, and I’d encourage anyone to try it.

If you charge £20 I guess I can leave a review for that. I couldn’t come in as I had chest infection. My daughter called the restaurant to explain and asked to change for a week after. Most restaurants would be understanding and wave the charge if you just move for the later date. I was really looking forward to this lunch but I will rather try different restaurant. Enjoy the £20 😉

Fantastic venue, felt more like fine dining than pub. It was so lovely! Love that you can see the chefs in the kitchen from the upstairs seating area. The scallops are divine and trust me, your gonna want to try the bread. It is delicious. I will definitely be back, and continue to sing your praises. I had a great time, thank you to the team.

Beautiful little pub on the outskirts of Bath city center. We booked in for a roast dinner and wow!!! Definitely the best roast dinner we’ve had out. Lovely friendly staff and a good selection of drinks. Highly, highly recommend if you’re in the area.

Honestly regret going here today. The Sunday roast was very nice but the staff were awful and put a massive cloud over the whole meal. One of the waitresses literally rolled her eyes at us before going to get us more vegetarian gravy. We were also told that we weren’t allowed to order our food at the same time as our drinks even though we told them politely that we were pressed for time. I assume they wanted to get another table’s order in first but they didn’t explain, and that partnered with an indifferent attitude, it came across as rude and a bit weird. Just right the order down and put it through as soon as you can? We had other moments of bad service from pretty much everyone that we dealt with and we left without tipping. Our table was also right next to the staff service area so we had a lot of noise and crashing of crockery. They could also do with refreshing the toilets and cleaning the skylight above the booth table 🤢 I won’t be back and won’t be recommending it to others. 👎🏼

The food here was delicious, I can truly understand why it’s on the Michelin list. The dinner we had was wonderful and the staff and team were so friendly, although we were just visiting, it felt as if it could be our local. I would highly recommended.

Absolutely loved it! Best roast in Bath.

We visited for the first time and had Sunday lunch. We had booked a table, but arrived 20 minutes early in the pouring rain. We asked a waitress if our table was ready, knowing that it might not be. She said it wasn't and instead of asking us if we wanted drinks at the bar, she told us the only place we could wait was outside (back in the pouring rain). When we got to our table, the menu looked great. Scallops was on the Specials board as a Starter for £12, I chose these as I love them. When they arrived, I was so disappointed. There were two tiny scallops, minus anything else. I know they are an expensive ingredient, but can't see the justification for the price. It was not a starter size dish, more like canape. We both had roast beef, which was ok. Mostly nicely cooked, but a little cold. It would have benefitted from more gravy, a little pot on the side would have been a nice touch. All in all, we would not come back. The service was good and we might have tipped, but felt like they'd had all the money they were going to get on the mark up for two scallops.

Sneaky and deceptive restaurant. They accepted my cancellation request when I spoke to a staff member on the phone 24 hours before my booking and said I wouldn't be charged for my cancellation. Then, deceitfully charged my bank account a few days afterward. I called the restaurant to investigate the charge and was forced to speak to a rude and snarky man who attempted to argue that, despite the original staff member cancelling my reservation with no issue, there was obviously a charge afterward. AVOID!

Sunday lunch, had the pork. Service and food both fine but, oh my, the crackling, clearly straight out of a packet, looked and tasted like a ball of white polystyrene. Chequers, what are you thinking?

Saturday lunch and personal service. Amazing (a quiet day for lunch maybe). The two servers were excellent. The menu covered everything. The chef knows what to do. All bases were covered, the textures, tastes and presentation of the food was excellent. The server was able to describe everything in detail and advise about combinations and size of portions. Our pasrty of six had a great time there for a birthday celebration. As we left we rebooked for a second celebration next week and are cancelling our reservation for the alternative destination down in Milsom street. Only three stars for atmosphere because it was a quiet day for lunch. Layout and decoration of the pub is very good.

One of the very best restaurants in Bath. Excellent menu and specials. Reasonably priced cocktails and wine. Exemplary service. Cannot recommend highly enough.
