Great place with an very welcoming landlord and a massive history. Go early for a pint and ask the landlord, he will happily tell you plenty interesting things about this beautiful building and it's history. Must go place.

Its just wow, what a pub full of characters exactly what pub should look. I have never done a review for any places in my life as I am very easy going person but this place couldn't resist me not to write. I would like to start from the entry of pub, as soon as we arrived car park looked empty but there were enough signs all over the place, we met one of the staff at car park who was tidying up leaves, he then came with us inside with nice smile and great us inside and ask us to register car so we did what he told us to do. Its very easy. long story short, big H behind the bar was beyond hospitable. We had a lovely table by conservatory with nice view of river weir, ordered drinks all fresh and nice very good Guinness and 6x. We then ordered food, my friend ordered pie which was wonderful, my sister's son ordered pizza which was one of the best we have ever had in Bath and Bristol, I ordered lamb Rogan Josh, which is another best Indian curry I have had in years and my sister had a special sea bass which was huge and so tasty which we still talk about it. overall food here in Jolly Sailor is just wow. It surprised me who wouldn't want to eat such a lovely food. Service is next level, I can guarantee, you would never get that kind of professional and next level service anywhere in the pub or restaurant. I got it, pub looks old as it is old pub. my only advise for patrons is, this pub is historical and service and food is mind blowing. If you want to get good food, good service and beautiful ambience and view this is the place. Very good value of money and once again big H keep up with your good work.

I just got a parking fine for spending an hour or so here. I had no idea you had to pay to park in a pub car-park, and didn't see any signs about it. - It was a dark, rainy night, so perhaps there are some but I didn't see any. Now it's going to cost me 60 quid! The pub is very pleasant on a sunny day, but be aware that you need to pay to park.

On a cycle decided to go and see this pub - we would have had coffee/drink as we realised it was a quiet riverside location and might possibly eat there in future The worst - on approach looked as if it was closed down Derelict grubby tatty tacky and unkempt on the outside One person there - staff - outside on his phone - made no attempt to acknowledge us let alone greet us We didn’t want to go inside - the outside was enough to put us off I would not consider consuming anything at all in such a filthy dump Please please can someone / proper pub company take this place on and bring it to its potential It is sad to read other reviews stating that it is a shadow of its former self

The food was really delicious and good value for money. There were four of us and we all ordered different meals - me a burger (excellent), my husband a curry (he was very impressed) my friend the gammon ( if was huge, well cooked and came with 2 eggs) her husband ordered the pie ((I have never seen a pie so packed with filling, I will be ordering that next time for sure). Add to this the stunning location and great service, what’s not to like?

What a huge disappointment at this pub set on a beautiful lock on the river Avon. The pub is dilapidated and in desperate need of renovating/painting. The conservatory inside and out could do with smartening up!! Even the pub sign that should be welcoming to visitors and river users is old and shabby ! The garden was over grown with weeds and broken slabs , which are a safety hazard in themselves , the wooden furniture is tatty! The food was awful , a warmed up pre frozen roll , no butter with a chicken & bacon filling that was tasteless that appeared to be direct from a tub severed up with a limp salad!! Such a shame as this pub sits on a beautiful part of the river overlooking the weir and should be looking glorious in such a setting!!

Food over priced for what you got - Tuna baguette with 5 crisps, side salad comprised if 1 slice of cucumber, pinch of lettace 1/4 of tomato. Staff not great, 3 glasses of coke £12 - Then to top it all you have to pay to park in the pub. Staff don't ask if you have parked. Signage wasn't clear but is now after I recieved a parking fine and appealled - council run car park. If you contact the pub you get ignored. So dont be fooled by them advertising free parking or on street parking as this is not the case street is all double yellow lines. My family and I wont be going back.

Sadly this pub in a lovely setting serves probably the worst pub food I've come across. I wish I had read a few reviews before arriving. The nut roast amounted to stuffing mix with a very small handful of nuts and a couple mushrooms added. This offering was more suitable in portion size, appearance and consistency as a cat's meal. What's more it wasn't cheap. Won't be coming back for food.

AVOID! Would not recommend. Went in for food that came out less than mediocre and service was less than enthusiastic. Upon realising we had not entered our car registration into their car park system the land lord assured us he would 'sort it out' having taken down you registration details. Over a month later and repeatedly assuring me he could 'sort it out' it turns out, it turns out he can't, and I have be hit with an enlarged parking fine. Untrustworthy management with a car parking system that is clearly a scam. There a two much nicer pubs down the road that you would be better off in.

It's lucky this pub is in a beautiful location. otherwise, they would not have any customers !!! Book a table, they said, so you make sure you get a place , complete waste of time . We get there at 13:50 for a table booked for 14:00 , to be told to set where you can and get in the queue which was about 20 deep to order you food .... we booked our food at 14:20 ish to be served at 15:40 and tbh the food isn't that great !! This honestly was one of the worst eating out experiences I’ve ever had. We had a table booked for 9 people and on arrival we were told to ‘sit anywhere’. The service was appalling. As you’ve already ordered and paid at the bar, they literally don’t care. Our table was booked for 12:30 and we got our food at 2:40pm. Even then, despite complaining a number of times that my children were hungry, they brought meals out little by little and the children were served about 10 minutes afterwards! The food was terrible quality. The whole experience was a disgrace. There were many, many tables in the same position as us. Terrible management, terrible service and really bog standard food.

Having endured the worst dining experience ever, I am only being generous enough to rate this pub 1 Star because there is no zero stars option. There is absolutely no point in booking a table here, as all bookings are totally ignored, and customers arrive at the time of their booking to find they have to search for a table, if one is available. From then on, no member of staff will come anywhere near your table, and the art of avoiding eye contact with customers and dodging serving them has been mastered to an excellent standard by the surly staff. You will need to join a long queue at the bar to order and pay for your drinks and food up front, and the reason for this will soon become apparent, as once you've handed over the money there is zero chance of your food arriving within the next 2 hours. Be prepared to seek out a staff member every 30 minutes or so to enquire where your food is. You will be assured it's being plated up 'now', but an hour and a half later, you will still be awaiting its arrival. Obviously, there is no drinks service at the table, so a member of your party hoping to fend off hunger with a 2nd round of drinks will have to leave your table to spend 30 minutes in a painfully slow-moving queue, extending well outside of the pub, to be eventually served by 1 of the only 2 bar staff available. If you have children in your party, be prepared to leave your table with them several times to walk up and down the river bank to distract them from their hunger pangs. When your food eventually arrives over 2 hours late, you will receive no apology from your server, and only a few members of your party will be served food. You will have to complain again in order for any food to appear for the rest of your party. The quality of the food was beyond disappointing. I had ordered beef, and was relieved there was only one slice of it, as it was almost impossible to chew. I don't believe anyone must ever order a dessert at this pub, having experienced such misery waiting for a main course to be served. Absolutely no one working here could care less about your dining experience. If they didn't take your money immediately, no one would ever hang around for 2 hours before walking out. This was the most unpleasant, infuriating experience imaginable, completely ruining what should have been a family celebration, and everywhere we looked, people were complaining about having the same dire experience as us.

Truly one of the worst lunchtime meals I have had in a very long time. Booked in advance for a table of 9 at 12.30pm Arrived and realised that despite booking there was no table service, just order at the bar. This ment that all food orders were lumped together, rather than pre-bookings being prioritised. We waited 2 hours for our food!! Meals arrived one at a time, so those served first had virtually finished before the last meal arrived. No apologise, waitresses didn't speak to anyone and just plonked the dishes down! Food was awful! Dried out chicken, soggy veg, four tiny overcooked roast potatoes, thin tasteless gravy. Yuk!!

I booked a table for 9 people for my birthday at the Jolly Sailor, we arrived to immediately discover booking means essentially nothing, as there is no table set aside and no record of it, we were dismissively told to sit wherever we can find space and all orders for drinks and food were done through the bar with only two staff on, this meant there was a long line leading outside for absolutely everything. Our so called "booking" was for 12.30 and we received our abjectly awful, straight out of a packet, food 2 hours later, after chasing up and complaining 3 times to staff who were frankly untrained and unfriendly, nobody in the establishment seemed to care less that food simply was not coming to tables, or that the three young children at our table were going demented with hunger, staff as far as I could tell were limited only to dropping off plates every so often and glass collecting as nobody in the several hours we were there even spoke to us or acknowledged our existence, the ridiculous system in place meant a half an hour queue if you wanted more drinks with your meal or to even speak to anyone about the problem. The adjacent table in the conservatory with us had the exact same experience, having booked for a birthday, waited several hours for food and been arrogantly dismissed whenever they tried to address this with staff. Sadly this pub is now clearly being run as a money grabbing tourist trap given their stunning riverside location, who having had your money off you as you order, simply could not care less about the rest of your experience, the quality of the food or service. It is frankly an insult and exploitative that they take "bookings" and do absolutely nothing to honour them. A birthday meal with family ruined, not only would I avoid ever coming back to this once decent pub I would also advise everyone I know in the local area never to bother. I left feeling as if I'd been mugged.

Chose this pub for my dad's birthday as been there a while ago and it boasted a lovely atmosphere as well as being dog friendly. We arrived half an hour before the pub opened as we were going for a walk beforehand. Trying to pay for parking was a nightmare and absolutely nobody around to help. Two of us managed after 20 minutes or so to pay but my dad got cut off before he could compete and couldn't get back through. You'd have thought half an hour before opening there would be staff around busy preparing and able to help us out, but no. Anyway we went for a walk and when we got back I went in to enquire. A man behind the bar informed me that we could put our car details into the screen inside the pub which was fine but looking around I couldn't bring myself to invite the rest of my family in to celebrate my dad's birthday. The whole place was cold, grimy, and there was absolutely zero appeal. It was so sad to see it looking so rundown when I remember it being such a lovely welcoming place. The whole pub looks grimey, sad and uncared for, cold and most unwelcoming. Unless you're passing for a quick pint on a sunny day, I wouldn't bother and looking at other reviews, we are anticipating a fine for the parking!

Can't comment on the food or service as I couldn't bring myself to stay despite the nightmare trying to pay for parking half hour before pub opened (as we had planned a walk before lunch)and place was desserted, no-one around to assist half an hour before opening. Looking at other reviews, we are half expecting a fine to come through as small print says your ticket also needs validation inside the pub, which we didn't do. Most unwelcoming man behind the bar who wasnt particularly helpful. The whole place is cold, grimy and I wouldn't have been surprised to see tumble weed blowing across the floor. It was a cold day and no fire lit; it is absolutely nothing like the social media posts suggest. Unless you're just passing for a quick pint on a sunny day, don't bother! I booked a table for two at 2:00 pm on Easter Sunday. We knew everywhere would be busy so a booking would be important. Arrived at 1:55 and asked if our table was ready. Apparently they had to clear our table. The landlord asked us to wait outside. It wasn't a warm day either. At 2:20 I went in to enquire about the table I had booked for 2:00 pm. I was told "well I can't tell people to leave can I." When I asked why they bother taking bookings at all, I just got a shrug. By 2:30 my table still wasn't ready so I left. Won't be back there again. It's a shame. The Jolly Sailor used to be a good pub but it's not anymore. Paint peeling off window frames, dodgy toilets, rude staff and poor service. But the still charged £15 for a glass of wine and an alco free cider.

Sunday roast, one of the best, they do not scrimp on anything! Their curry is delicious too and all presented really well. Staff are very friendly, it can get busy at the bar but they do their best to get you served as quickly as possible then you can either enjoy a nice cozy drink inside or sit outside right on the lock and ‘hopefully’ see the boats come in, one of my favourite pubs, been coming here for years. Also very dog friendly with dog ice cream and puppachinos available!

Was greeted by a woman that was wearing an outside puffer coat , vey rude , just asked if we booked . No welcome or hello . ‘Restaurant’ was a shabby conservatory that had poor lighting , dregs of Christmas decorations and very grimy . I didn’t walk out at this point as my children had booked for a Mothering Sunday treat . Most of the waiting staff were wearing outdoor coats and even baseball caps . Service was very slow considering there wasn’t many customers. Food was either dried out or under cooked . Both my son and myself had food poisoning from under cooked chicken . They took the price of the chicken off the bill but I’d NEVER go back whilst under this management . Reported the food poisoning to then find out many more have been poisoned by this establishment . Food hygiene rates now at 2* so eat here at your own peril 😬

Came here for mothers day, The place was very dirty, unhygienic no PPE was used ie aprons, gloves in kitchen, kitchen staff eating left over food, false Advertising on food as didn't have most of it and wasn't told before hand. The toilets were vile I wouldn't put my dog in there absolutely shocking food was vile and dry not cooked properly asked for a pawn cocktail pawns were warm salad looked 3days old, asked for tagliatelle got spaghetti , staff didn't no what the right to the left foot was doing and got orders we wrong ! Staff wore baseball caps trainers and jackets never been in such a shamble of a restaurant shame as used to be a nice pub and Overheard another famliy complain as roast chicken was cooked on the outside and raw inside!!

Wow!!!! Not sure where to start.....damp, smelly, dirty. Hardly able to converse with staff due to language difficulties. Slow service, cold mediocre food....won't be returning!

We had a surprise 60th birthday for my girlfriends mother, and it was absolutely fantastic Harry and his staff were out of this world, we arrived a bit late to set up the decorations and with out asking them Harry's young staff stepped in and set it all up beautifully! And the food, i was expecting your usual cheap party food but wow The freshly made sandwiches and 48 hour fermented pizza dough was the best I've tasted, and all local ingredients the owner Harry came from London and is putting Bristol on the map absolutely amazing 👏 Thank you to the team at the Jolly sailor so much for making the night so special 🙂

Such a brilliant place to stop if you're passing or out for a walk. The staff were so so lovely ( especially with our pooch who got treats) and the food was fab, will definitely be going back! 👌 ( The last photo was part of the walk and not the Jolly Sailor, as most of you know he loves mud, water and more mud...)

The manager/owner had a very nice chap lit fire for us. Sad to hear about flooding but did not effect service. Gravy a bit thin but roast lunch very good

Lovely pub for a drink. Stopped off after a walk. Food is very good. Enjoyed the baguette. The only thing was the bread was a little chewy but no problem otherwise.

Jolly Sailor is one of my favs pubs 😊 Visiting it since I was living at Saltford marina 7 years ago. Location is beautiful, has a cozy and unique vibe, staff is friendly and professional and the food is just delicious 😋. Would highly recommend it and each season has his beauty .. in the winter is cozy with the open fire on and when the weather is nice you can just sit at the terrace near by the canal watching boats passing by! Sending my best wishes to the owner and staff! Keep up the good work, guys 😊 See ya soon x Iren

We went for Christmas lunch. The beef was a bit chewy and the meal was adequate but a bit of a let down. The whole place felt a bit run down. The redeeming feature is the setting which is beautiful!

Lovely little place, in a beautiful location. Cant fault the food and service, but the day we went there was no milk and it felt like the place would benefit from a spruce up!

Every time I have been to this pub I have been impressed by the standard of food, in particular the homemade pie and fish & chips are delicious. Best steak and Guinness pie, the crispy delicious chips are to die for and the fish is cooked to perfection. The staff are always friendly and it is always so quiet. I feel this pub needs more recognition for their amazing food! Come try the pie everyone! You will not be disappointed ;) It isn't the nicest interior but everything else makes up for this!

Fantastic setting, very friendly staff and decent pub grub! Only downer was the condition of the pub. It needs a good clean and refreshing.

Food was very disappointing. A very dry and uninviting burger and nothing special about the 'gourmet ' chips, not much better than frozen. I could have easily made a better meal at home unfortunately. A couple had the curry that they brought into the kitchen from somewhere and they were much nicer. Then the beer options are pretty poor. It's the location that keeps it going because it is lovely to sit outside by the weir.

Really cosy place to shelter from the storm this weekend - open fire, mulled wine, delicious food. We had a few starters/ small plates to share. The pheasant salad and mushroom risotto were especially tasty. Mulled wine could have been a little hotter to keep us warmer for longer

Rude bar staff on entry, didn’t feel very welcome and witnessed the same member of staff making snarky remarks about other guests.

I enjoy pub quiz nights here. Good atmosphere, feels inclusive. The drinks menu is very extensive
