The Jolly Sailor at Saltford has a charming outdoor seating area overlooking the locks, which is its main appeal. However, the pub itself feels run down and in need of investment to improve its condition. On a recent lunchtime visit, I waited nearly fifteen minutes before a member of staff came to serve at the bar, indicating poor service and possible understaffing. Due to these issues, I chose not to eat there and would not recommend it for dining. While the location is lovely, the overall experience was disappointing and suggests the venue needs attention to both maintenance and customer service.

Four of us called in for lunch today. Excellent customer service and the food was excellent. Two of us had the pie and I would highly recomend it. We were early so we were able to sit anywhere we wanted and hardly any waiting for the food.If it's a hot day and a weekend or hight of summer I'd recomend booking just incase as It is a popular place with excellent views.

This pub could have so much going for it but it is just unloved. Tried the curry and had previously checked that it was authentic. I was absolutely assured that it was. Unfortunately, the Nan bread was tiny and seemed to be a very poor bought version. Poppadom was oily. Curry was not too bad. Lamb was not bad, chicken a bit dry. It could be thriving but on a beautiful summer evening it was just ticking over.

Had been here before when the old chef used to cook delicious Specials and great food was always guaranteed. I appreciate it has had a change of ownership and does basic pub grub now- which is ok . They need more staff as seem very short handed. Great location but thinking would go somewhere else to eat but if you never ate here before you wouldnt know any different - and in which case its just a usual pub in a nice location. Could improve with more staff for better service even if food mediocre, or do some signature dishes that are tasty and different.

The two gentlemen working the bar were very friendly and helpful. Service was fast. I had the vegetable kadhi, which was okay, but kind of bland and tired. Maybe earlier in the day it would be better. Will probably try the vegan burger next time, though. My husband is half Indian, so maybe I'm spoiled, but I think his cooking is better.

Friendly pub and eatery by the pretty canal and lock at Saltford. Manager was very helpful as my wife was using crutches. We ate in conservatory but the outside benches looked inviting in the warm sunshine. Lunchtime menu but they do 3 courses otherwise. Disabled toilet near main door. Lots of signs to stop you getting a parking fine.

This place is lovely.. amazing location & not too busy. Food was delicious and arrived promptly. Could happily pass a few hours listening to the weir and watching river life with a drink in hand. Lots of negative reviews re: parking etc. we came on bikes, so no experience of that. Seems a silly thing for the owners to get hamstrung by. If I was them I’d cancel the contract with their parking company and take the hit - it’s not worth the negative press.

The worst customer service of my life. Man behind the bar verbally abused me. I went with my partner for a Sunday roast today. We ordered 2 beef roasts and water. We saw 3 separate customers complain about their pints being wrong and having them swapped. The couple behind us- one of them had their main and their plate cleared and the other person got their main 40 minutes later. After a 45 minutes wait we asked the waitress about the food, she was very polite and said the kitchen said it will be 2 minutes. After an hour and 10 minutes wait I went to the bar to ask how long the food will be, I was told it’s coming right now. It didn’t. I asked about the possibility of some sort of refund. The young man behind the bar was polite, apologised for the wait and said I could have a refund. He had trouble with the card refund so I waited with him for about 5 minutes. In this time the food came so my food got cold as they couldn’t figure out the refund but he said I’d get the refund so I could go eat and somebody will come to us. The food was fine, the veg and Yorkshire was nice, but the beef was dry and tough. I also had string on my plate(as seen in picture), I’m hoping that it was from the beef and was not removed. The food alone forgetting the service was not worth £17. Nobody came to speak about the refund so we waited at the bar, where a middle aged man was rudely staring at me. When it was my turn he said “I’ll speak to you” abruptly in front of around 7 other customers. Before I spoke he said that I was “rude” and “desperate” that I can’t “ask for food and for a refund” and that I needed to “look around it is busy”- there was a booked party in the inside, the outside was more than half empty and most tables just having drinks. He wouldn’t let me speak, so I just let him shout at me. This was humiliating being shouted at and was very uncomfortable for everyone. I tried explaining that I was told I was going to get a refund and he continued shouting at me saying that “this is a lesson” and whilst he was serving other customers and I was crying to my partner he kept shouting that I was “rude” and that I needed to “learn”. The young man looked terrified of this middle aged man but did agree with me that I was not being rude. The young waitresses were lovely and came to apologise for this man’s behaviour after. Unfortunately they said that this is a common occurrence. I understand he was stressed due to the number of complaints but the manner that he attacked me was belittling and horrible. I understand this has been escalated to the manager and I hope if they have any doubts on this situation to please watch the bar CCTV.

What has happened. This used to be a lovely pub with lovely food. Yesterday, we ordered home made pie, which did not seem home made and it came cold. I have to say I felt sorry for the guy behind the bar as he was working alone it seemed but this place is now very run down, it looks dreadful from the outside and the only nice thing about it was the setting of course. The painted outside green furniture was not comfortable and we will not be returning. Shame. The management need help to make a go of this going forward.

We had booked a table for four people at 16:00. When we arived we had to que at the bar to find out where to sit, and were told to sit anywhere. There was a long que for the bar, where food orders and drink orders were all being taken by the same two staff. Long wait to order food (30 min). Long wait for food to arrive (30 min). When food arrived the portions were small. I asked to check my order at the bar, and they could not find it. The restaurant was clearly overrun and not managing. Food was overpriced: £20 per plate, small portions. Location was lovely.

Well this is a Mother’s Day that will live long in the memory!! We booked a table and when we arrived we were told, “just sit anywhere “ of which we had two tables to choose from because inside and outside was rammed full of people. The queue to get a drink was 45 minutes the first time, because they had only one person serving on the bar on Mother’s Day!!! We then had to wait in the queue for another 45 minutes to order food. (There was no wait time on the food when ordering) 1 hour and a half later the food eventually arrived, the 4 beef roasts were cold tough and not worth £5each let alone the £20 each that was charged!! I was lucky my burger arrived hot and was nice. This was not an isolated case there were 10 different parties that were complaining during our time there. One interesting complaint was a poor woman that had sat on the green benches outside, only to find out when she was leaving that her jeans and expensive coat was covered in green paint!!!! No signs were put up to warn people. So to sum up, would not recommend, poor service, poor food and short staffed. Also be ready to stand in a queue for a long time!!! There’s a good chance you could end up being covered in green paint!

I've been coming on-and-off to this pub for many years. Visited again for a quick drink last October, but due to being distracted when entering the pub, I failed to see that I had to register my car (and nobody informed me to do this at the bar). This led to me getting sent a massive parking fine through the post months later, which i have no choice but to pay due to the appeal process timing out. The pub tried to help but couldn't. This is what is wrong with modern life - you can't visit a pub for a quick drink without getting sucker-punched by a private car parking company, stealing your hard-earned money off you. I'm never going to go back to the Jolly Sailor for this very reason. You've lost a customer. Will go elsewhere!

Its just wow, what a pub full of characters exactly what pub should look. I have never done a review for any places in my life as I am very easy going person but this place couldn't resist me not to write. I would like to start from the entry of pub, as soon as we arrived car park looked empty but there were enough signs all over the place, we met one of the staff at car park who was tidying up leaves, he then came with us inside with nice smile and great us inside and ask us to register car so we did what he told us to do. Its very easy. long story short, big H behind the bar was beyond hospitable. We had a lovely table by conservatory with nice view of river weir, ordered drinks all fresh and nice very good Guinness and 6x. We then ordered food, my friend ordered pie which was wonderful, my sister's son ordered pizza which was one of the best we have ever had in Bath and Bristol, I ordered lamb Rogan Josh, which is another best Indian curry I have had in years and my sister had a special sea bass which was huge and so tasty which we still talk about it. overall food here in Jolly Sailor is just wow. It surprised me who wouldn't want to eat such a lovely food. Service is next level, I can guarantee, you would never get that kind of professional and next level service anywhere in the pub or restaurant. I got it, pub looks old as it is old pub. my only advise for patrons is, this pub is historical and service and food is mind blowing. If you want to get good food, good service and beautiful ambience and view this is the place. Very good value of money and once again big H keep up with your good work.

What a huge disappointment at this pub set on a beautiful lock on the river Avon. The pub is dilapidated and in desperate need of renovating/painting. The conservatory inside and out could do with smartening up!! Even the pub sign that should be welcoming to visitors and river users is old and shabby ! The garden was over grown with weeds and broken slabs , which are a safety hazard in themselves , the wooden furniture is tatty! The food was awful , a warmed up pre frozen roll , no butter with a chicken & bacon filling that was tasteless that appeared to be direct from a tub severed up with a limp salad!! Such a shame as this pub sits on a beautiful part of the river overlooking the weir and should be looking glorious in such a setting!!

This honestly was one of the worst eating out experiences I’ve ever had. We had a table booked for 9 people and on arrival we were told to ‘sit anywhere’. The service was appalling. As you’ve already ordered and paid at the bar, they literally don’t care. Our table was booked for 12:30 and we got our food at 2:40pm. Even then, despite complaining a number of times that my children were hungry, they brought meals out little by little and the children were served about 10 minutes afterwards! The food was terrible quality. The whole experience was a disgrace. There were many, many tables in the same position as us. Terrible management, terrible service and really bog standard food.

Having endured the worst dining experience ever, I am only being generous enough to rate this pub 1 Star because there is no zero stars option. There is absolutely no point in booking a table here, as all bookings are totally ignored, and customers arrive at the time of their booking to find they have to search for a table, if one is available. From then on, no member of staff will come anywhere near your table, and the art of avoiding eye contact with customers and dodging serving them has been mastered to an excellent standard by the surly staff. You will need to join a long queue at the bar to order and pay for your drinks and food up front, and the reason for this will soon become apparent, as once you've handed over the money there is zero chance of your food arriving within the next 2 hours. Be prepared to seek out a staff member every 30 minutes or so to enquire where your food is. You will be assured it's being plated up 'now', but an hour and a half later, you will still be awaiting its arrival. Obviously, there is no drinks service at the table, so a member of your party hoping to fend off hunger with a 2nd round of drinks will have to leave your table to spend 30 minutes in a painfully slow-moving queue, extending well outside of the pub, to be eventually served by 1 of the only 2 bar staff available. If you have children in your party, be prepared to leave your table with them several times to walk up and down the river bank to distract them from their hunger pangs. When your food eventually arrives over 2 hours late, you will receive no apology from your server, and only a few members of your party will be served food. You will have to complain again in order for any food to appear for the rest of your party. The quality of the food was beyond disappointing. I had ordered beef, and was relieved there was only one slice of it, as it was almost impossible to chew. I don't believe anyone must ever order a dessert at this pub, having experienced such misery waiting for a main course to be served. Absolutely no one working here could care less about your dining experience. If they didn't take your money immediately, no one would ever hang around for 2 hours before walking out. This was the most unpleasant, infuriating experience imaginable, completely ruining what should have been a family celebration, and everywhere we looked, people were complaining about having the same dire experience as us.

I booked a table for 9 people for my birthday at the Jolly Sailor, we arrived to immediately discover booking means essentially nothing, as there is no table set aside and no record of it, we were dismissively told to sit wherever we can find space and all orders for drinks and food were done through the bar with only two staff on, this meant there was a long line leading outside for absolutely everything. Our so called "booking" was for 12.30 and we received our abjectly awful, straight out of a packet, food 2 hours later, after chasing up and complaining 3 times to staff who were frankly untrained and unfriendly, nobody in the establishment seemed to care less that food simply was not coming to tables, or that the three young children at our table were going demented with hunger, staff as far as I could tell were limited only to dropping off plates every so often and glass collecting as nobody in the several hours we were there even spoke to us or acknowledged our existence, the ridiculous system in place meant a half an hour queue if you wanted more drinks with your meal or to even speak to anyone about the problem. The adjacent table in the conservatory with us had the exact same experience, having booked for a birthday, waited several hours for food and been arrogantly dismissed whenever they tried to address this with staff. Sadly this pub is now clearly being run as a money grabbing tourist trap given their stunning riverside location, who having had your money off you as you order, simply could not care less about the rest of your experience, the quality of the food or service. It is frankly an insult and exploitative that they take "bookings" and do absolutely nothing to honour them. A birthday meal with family ruined, not only would I avoid ever coming back to this once decent pub I would also advise everyone I know in the local area never to bother. I left feeling as if I'd been mugged.

Truly one of the worst lunchtime meals I have had in a very long time. Booked in advance for a table of 9 at 12.30pm Arrived and realised that despite booking there was no table service, just order at the bar. This ment that all food orders were lumped together, rather than pre-bookings being prioritised. We waited 2 hours for our food!! Meals arrived one at a time, so those served first had virtually finished before the last meal arrived. No apologise, waitresses didn't speak to anyone and just plonked the dishes down! Food was awful! Dried out chicken, soggy veg, four tiny overcooked roast potatoes, thin tasteless gravy. Yuk!!

This pub is only busy due to its location, its been left to get really rundown and is really dirty. Really long wait for food (1.5hrs) and a 25 minute queue for drinks. Food is basic. Staff don't seem in any rush to do anything. Don't waste your time.

Love this pub, right next to the river with great views and lots of outdoor seating in the sun or in the shade but great either way on a sunny day, I haven't trued the food here yet but what was coming out looked good so I'll be sure to update once I have

Lovely staff and food. We had quite a large party and had to make a couple of changes to our booking but staff were patient, flexible and polite!

Fantastic meal on a sunny day! Heavily recommend the curry, one of the best chicken tikkas I have had. Service as great and value for food is amazing! Will definitely be back.

Fabulous location but very narrow access. Pub is tired, in need of TLC. Waited an hour for fish and chips when the pub wasn't even busy. The fish was nice, but I got garden peas instead of mushy peas and the chips were either really crispy and overdone or pale and underdone. I think the barman was also the chef. While we were waiting 6 people arrived and as there didn't appear to be any service, they left. Money lost there.

Seems to have lost some of its original magic. We enjoyed a few drinks and really good food previously. Ordered Chateaubriand to share, was tough. Staff seemed stressed over all disappointing from our previous couple of visits. Gave us the impression as gone from great atmosphere, vibrant and relaxed dining to more like a rowdy watering hole. The cocktails weren’t as good as we remembered either sadly.

Wonderful well cooked food with a good choice of dishes and they are dog friendly too. In fact the dog was thinking of staying the way he was looked after. Had a great night

Went for lunch on Monday, the sun was out so it was quiet with no outside space, it was nice to cool off in an air conditioned pub. Good choice of drinks and enjoyed the food very much.
