We have passed this pub loads and kept saying we should try it. Wish we hadn’t. We booked a table when we called to see if they were open as website was out of date. When we arrived we were shown to our table. And a drinks order was taken. We then waited for ages for the meal order to be taken. We asked if they wanted to take our order after waiting 30 mins and seeing people get their orders taken before us even though they arrived after us. Tbh the pies were nice. But the chips tasted like they had been cooked in dirty oil. They definitely did not taste fresh. When we came to settle up we were given the wrong bill. We were aware that this might happen as we heard other customers talking about being over charged.

Have passed this pub many times and was attracted by the beer garden and view. Visited for the first time today but sat inside. The staff were very friendly and made us feel very welcome. We ordered 2 small pies, meat and potato, and homity pie. They came with pickled red cabbage and mushy peas. We also ordered a bowl of chips to share. We thought the pies were quite big, we really didn’t need the chips. Best home made pies ever! Piping hot and delicious. I was looking forward to treacle sponge and custard for pudding but was too full. Hubby managed Bakewell tart and cream. Another big portion, warm and delicious. We thought it was good value for money with excellent service. If you want a traditional English pub with excellent food I highly recommend you visit here. Although we don’t live close by we will definitely return when passing through Langsett.

Our usual Thursday lunch. The wagon and horses is a good English pub. Nice atmosphere and good food. We had the dog with us, there was no problem taking him in. We were given a table for two, however there was a dog under the next table. I asked if we could sit elsewhere. The barmaid (sorry don't like that word). The lady took us to a other room. She was very friendly and explained how the bar and food ordering worked. I had the small meat a d potato pie, with mushy peas and red cabbage. Good choice. I will only need a small supper tonight. Would we go back? In a flash. I would Imagine at weekends it could get busy with walkers. There is a beer garden also.

Traditional country pub close to Langsett Reservoir. Great views from the beer garden on sunny days. Don’t expect a gastro pub environment, you’ll be disappointed but if you like traditional pub environments which are clean and dog friendly then the pub will not disappoint you. We visited on an afternoon after a circuit of the reservoir and had some local Barnsley ales and a large bowl of chips as a snack. The landlady was friendly and informative about the drinks on offer and the food that we did have was good and they provided two plates and forks so we could share. Yes the furniture is old fashioned but that adds to the charm of a traditional pub, everything was clean including the toilets which cannot be said of some other pubs we’ve visited. The menu looks interesting for a typical traditional pub lunch and I will be back to sample the food.

After a walk with the dog we stopped for a bite to eat and a drink. Ordered 2 Yorkshire puddings with beef, one portion of chips and 2 drinks. £35! My husband asked them to check the price. Turned out at £10.95 for the Yorkshire pudding and £4.50 for a soft drink!! Food arrived and was just a Yorkshire puddings (about 10cm diameter) which was stodgy (they hadn’t used enough eggs in the batter so it was tough) and a couple of slices of beef. No vege, no garnish, nothing. I’d have been embarrassed to serve it and charge half the price. Chips were in a tiny sauce dish. We weren’t bothered that there wasn’t many chips as they weren’t nice anyway, but again it seemed cheeky to serve chips in a sauce dish! All in all good was average and prices extortionate. To top it off, they expect customers to clear their own dishes away after they’ve eaten! We won’t be returning but will try the cafe over the road in future. Such a shame as it could bring in so many customers if they just put some effort in as the location is fabulous.

I have been a regular here for many years (I reviewed this pub 3 times in 2012). I was in the area to meet a friend and to have a walk around the picturesque Langsett Reservoir.I haven't visited since around 2016 and was immediately impressed when the owner Vanda immediately recognised me and took the trouble to come over and have a chat. This visit marks my first indoor pub meal since the reopening of pubs after the Covid lockdown.Everything was much the same as in my previous reviews, so please refer to those for detailed comments on the food and ambience. The only real difference is that Vanda has now taken over the pub from her mother, who had ran the pub for many years. The pub has coped well with the recent lockdown - offering their famous pie range for collection or home delivery, which will continue indefinitelyWe both ordered meat and potato pie (made from scratch including the pastry) superbly accompanied with home made pickled red cabbage and minted mushy peas. I ordered a well kept pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord. Also of note is the take away fish &chip service on Fridays & weekends. For customers who lack the confidence to eat inside after the recent crisis, they can make use of the innovative "Snap 'Oyl" i.e. window behind the bar to order food for eating in the pub's garden which affords excellent views of the local landscape.I would point out that we had a high confidence in the management to operate the pub in a safe, socially distanced manner. We felt well looked after in this regard and it is obvlous that guidance is being followed to the letter. We will be back very soon.

After a windy walk around Langsett Reservoir my husband and I decided to treat ourselves to lunch. We were not disappointed. The pub itself is oldy worldy in design, very traditional with a proper fire burning, very cosy and welcoming. The service was efficient, friendly and we waited what I’d consider an acceptable time to be served and for our food to arrive to our table. No complaints with our food either. I had the chicken, bacon and leek pie, while hubby had the chicken and asparagus pie both came with x2 sides for the price. The pies come in a ceramic pot and have a suet pastry lid. Pastry and filling both very tasty. We also had desserts too. Would recommend this pub.

I was one of the party involved in ‘cakegate’. I think had we been told on arrival, when we handed over the cake, that there would be a charge to use their plates and forks then that would have been more acceptable. We were only made aware, in a very offhand manner, when we started cutting the cake. There were 10 of us dining and we did, individually and collectively, buy alcoholic drinks at the bar which the manager didn’t seem to be aware of as in her response on Facebook said we had hardly bought any drinks and had only drank their ‘free water’. This was untrue. How could she know as she was never around the bar when we bought the drinks. We left with a bad taste in our mouths and it actually spoilt our birthday celebration. We were all stunned that she had been so measly. The attitude/manner of the ‘owner/manager took us by surprise. She was very offhand, sarcastic and rude. We have been visiting for 30+ years but, unfortunately, never again. We were treated with such disdain.

We have been visiting this pub for years. Today we went for a birthday celebration and I took a cake as a surprise for my brother, which the kitchen kindly organised for me with candles. We were met with a rude waitress (? Manager) when we asked if we could have some forks & serviettes to eat the cake with. She said she would have to charge us for them and said “what next? Party poppers?”. It was really rude and inappropriate. There was no need for this sarcasm. What a shame. Can’t say we will be visiting again. I’ve never known any pub / bar / restaurant have a problem with taking a cake for a birthday celebration, and there were ten of us dining, so we’d already spent a fair amount on food & drink. She said that she had to pay the wages of her staff who would be washing up the plates we’d eaten the cake off.

After a tiring walk around Langsett the pub, situated on the busy A616 leading to and from the M1, was ideal for my friend and I to satisfy our hunger after that long trek around the picturesque reservoir. A daily special was on offer for two courses for £12.50 but we decided to order separately from the menu. I had Salmon Fish Cakes with salad and a tasty dip while my friend opted for the tomato soup in garlic which looked delicious and he really welcomed the hot bread roll that accompanied it. For the main course we both opted for the steak and ale pie which was truly scrumptious, served hot in a bowl with luscious pieces of steak in a tasty sauce. I opted for the steak chips which were well cooked while my friend chose mashed potato. All this was washed down with refreshingly cold and hygienically served in chilled glasses. We had received a warm welcome from the staff who were delighted to serve our drinks at the table given that we were not very mobile after our strenuous walk while they were extremely attentive throughout our stay. All in all a highly enjoyable meal and visit that we will be keen enough to repeat when we can both summon up the energy to complete that challenging walk again.

They didn't want any money up front were happy for us to pay on the night of our stay.Yes it's an old pub, on the main road , so traffic noise bring your ear plugs! Our room had eighties decor but was clean and had 3 single beds all very comfortable with clean warm bedding and towels for use in the ensuite bathroom which is what we wanted . It's location for the walk ( peak boundary ) we were doing was perfect. We all chose pies as they seemed to be proud of them and they were delicious, light pastry and veg of choice. Puddings were scrumptious and the drinks were reasonable. Breakfast include was more than enough. Staff were pleasant and helpful and Olivia especially was lovely. For some reason there was only one person front of house who was struggling to cope with the orders being placed which led to delays ordering food and buying drinks. The menu is a bit limited and mainly consists of pies which look good and have enough filling but are really a casserole with a "bought" pastry lid. They are not good value and no gravy is provided. They ran out of all the chicken varieties of pie by 1.15pm leaving the poor stressed out solo man at front of house trying to offer alternatives.

We arrived around 7.30pm this evening (Easter Friday) it was very quiet, we received prompt, friendly table service from the young woman who was working on the bar, and our food arrived after a short wait. We ordered a starter side of chicken with chips as a main, for £5.20 we received a very few thin pieces of processed or at least cheap chicken and a undercooked pale roll of packet garlic bread, again VERY OVER PRICED / POOR QUALITY at £2.20. After raising our dismay to the MANAGER, she was VERY RUDE with her reply, short and sharp and abruptly said she would take them off the bill. The rest of the food arrived, VERY undercooked carrots to accompany our pies and the sauteed potatoes looked liked they'd been cooked/kept on heat for several hours - dry, luke warm and no crispiness to them, watery pies with little meat. Ordered a side of pickled red cabbage to accompany a hot pie/veg and came out dry and COLD - apparently there speciality!

We met up with seven old friends at The Wagon and Horses, as it was pretty central for the group, who meet up periodically. Several of the party had been before and enjoyed the pies, so my OH and I ordered steak pies. They were obviously cooked to order (probably took 20 minutes to arrive, but this wasn't a problem as we were all catching up) and were delivered piping hot with chips and seasonal veg. They were absolutely delicious, good shortcrust pastry, plenty of steak cooked perfectly and, most importantly, excellent meaty gravy (none of the glutinous packet gravy, which many places serve). The chips were also good and the veg was great. Well, of course, we then all had to try the famous bilberry pie, which again, was very good. Would thoroughly recommend to those pie aficionados out there!

We booked a table for 1300hrs on a Sunday intending to have a Roast meal, but when we saw the menu we decided to try their Home Made Meat & Potato Pie. We ordered 2 normal pies and 1 small pie, and we were amazed at the size of the pies which came with mushy peas and pickled red cabbage. the decor of the premises are like going back to the 1950/1960, but the food is well worth a visit and we shall be returning in the future.

Well not us - at least for the first 45 minutes! This pub is probably not the best place to choose if you are a party of more than 6, at least from our experience. There were 12 of us and having placed our orders at the bar at around 1.00 pm the dishes appeared in ones and twos every ten minutes or so, meaning two of our party only received theirs an hour later. Frustrating for them and embarrassing for those of us who received our meals before them. We had pre-booked a table but the pub wasn't able to take our order in one go, hence having to queue to place our orders and pay individually. The pies and other food was OK - but we have had similar elsewhere for less than £11 per head. We felt sorry for the waiting staff who had to try to explain why we couldn't all be served at roughly the same time.

Having just completed a very satisfying walk around Langsett Reservoir we were looking forward to a drink and a bite to eat, so there it was the Waggon and Horses, just screaming come on in, so we did, unfortunately we left not feeling the same enthusiasm as we did going in.The menu was typical of what would find in a pub restaurant of this nature, the menu proudly claimed the pies were the speciality, fair enough it appeared to be home made, but it wasn't the best I've had, filling but that's about it, that apart everything appeared to be straight out of the freezer, the wife had tempura prawns and scampi, which again she found non inspiring. There was one thing I found strange, I asked for a pint of Guinness and was told that they only sold agitated Guinness, which was a new one on me, basically a can of flat Guinness which is poured in a glass and put on an agitator, can't say it was bad, because it wasn't, just never come across it before!By the way dogs are welcome, and there is a beer garden, just don't expect too much, and you won't be disappointed.

Excellent. Booked a table Friday 4th August. Very busy. Food ordered and had to wait 50 minutes but well worth it. The meat & potatoe pies were superb. Everything cooked to order so we expected a wait but it was nice to have a drink, chat and catch up. The service is always nice a polite. Have been many times and will hopefully go many more times.

How lovely to find an old world Pub!! We have eaten delicious home cooked food in this establishment for many years and I still look forward to visiting today. In winter you can sit by a roaring open fire in comfort and in summer, try the beer garden outside. You will find great Yorkshire hospitality, a well stocked bar and a menu to satisfy the most discerning palate! Accommodation is also available in tastefully decorated rooms with necessary amenities and a good standard of hygiene throughout. It is advisable to book a table in advance to avoid disappointment.

Very long wait for a very modest, yet overpriced, Sunday roast. Additionally, the vegetables, horseradish and (extra) gravy were not delivered with the meal and took so long to emerge that remaining food was cold by the time they arrived.Deserts and drinks similarly haphazard - long wait, then two coffees, further wait, third coffee, long wait and repeated reminders before tea arrived.Deserts took forever to arrive and then were missing items when they did surface. All staff seemed junior and under-trained and no management were evident (or willing to take any ownership of the shortcomings).Deeply disappointing, especially given the ambitious pricing.

Food is cooked to order so you can expect a delay. However when the Meat and Potatoes pie arrives you will not be disappointed.I have been going to this pub for years and have never been disappointed with the food. Fish and Chips are terrific and if the Gammon is available then have a go at that. Billberry pie and Ice cream if you can manage it is worth finding the room.

Called for lunch on the way back from Manchester airport after picking friends up who had just been on a long haul flight. We ordered our food at the bar. After about 15 minutes, a lady who may have been the manager, came over & asked if we had ordered food. We said that we had & she walked away. After a further 35 minutes or so, my friend went to the bar & asked when we could expect our food. The bar staff then found our order at the side of the till. We were asked if we wanted our money back, but as we had waited so long and were promised that the food would be out in 10 minutes, we didn't cancel our order. When the same lady who had spoke to us earlier brought out the food the only apology & compensation she offered was to have more food put on our plates!!!The food was average & the roast beef tough. Would have expected better service & food for the price.

We visited this establishment today after having quite a tough day. My cousin and I had taken our children out to the reservoir nearby and were supposed to meet more family for a picnic. After walking for a couple of hours and unable to find them because the place really is quite big. We decided to give up and head to the pub! This to me sounded like a great idea, the children were hungry and we were all tired and in need of refreshments. Our experience was so rubbish though and it's such a shame. The pub is in a lovely location with a gorgeous gardenand the bar staff seemed very helpful and cheerful despite the mini dictator who was in charge. The place was dusty inside, the wait for food was much too long and the manager's attitude was disgraceful. For dinner my niece had asked for a children's sausage and mash meal which was £5 and she asked for beans with her food. I was charged £2 for a small ramekin of beans to go with a children's meal! My son was shocked at the charge and said so whilst the manager was at our table. She became angry and was very very rude and I honestly couldn't believe that she would speak to any customer this way, never mind a child! I definitely think that it would be a good idea for management to seek training in customer service because they were seriously lacking these skills. My son had ordered a meat and potato pie which actually tasted quite nice but was not worth coming here again for if customers are treated this way. The pie arrived to our table in its baking dish and then on three different sized plates, which I thought was a bit odd. What was even more odd however was when the manager told my son how he should take his pie out of the dish and put it onto the plate, shall I do it for you? No, no you shan't. If it should be eaten from a plate then why isn't it on the plate? Why bring all the unnecessary tableware out of the kitchen? It's stupid, the amount of plates that would need washing for no reason. Don't get me started on the silly little doilies on the side plates!

Booked a table a few days before our planned visit after checking it was ok to bring our small dog. After a leisurely walk around the reservoir we were more than ready for our meal. 3 of our party had pie, which all of them thoroughly enjoyed. I opted for the Mackerel from the specials board and wasn't disappointed. We followed with delightful Bilberry pie and Bakewell tart which were equally as delicious. Had a few drinks and coffee too. Some guests sat inside with their dogs but we chose to sit in the garden in the wonderful sunshine. We will be returning very soon.

No frills pub run by experienced landlady Maureen who knows the pub business and runs the waggon with ruthless efficiency. All dishes are simple and un cluttered, chilli and rice, range of pie and chips, lasagne. All offer a good fill as a meal in a clean environment with a no frills service approach. But puds a bit bland and lacking variety as menu has not changed for the last years. This is probably its attraction

Visited this pub for the first time after a walk with friends on a sunny Sunday. Staff weren't friendly when ordering drinks/food. One of my friends ordered a garlic bread which cost £2.80, what arrived was a small bread roll (usually served with soup) cut in half with melted cheese and garlic on top! We all laughed at how utterly ridiculous this was. Our friends desserts then arrived, tasting good but the portion for the £5 something it cost was not enough! Four of us ordered a main meal. Ages after ordering we were finally told they had run out of what we had asked for so ordered again. Food took ages to arrive and despite waiting around an hour if not more and our friends ordering first, their meal never arrived as it had been forgotten about! Worst service we've ever received.

Called in with 4 other family members, as we had been told that the place prides itself on it's pies. An imposing old building, with the typical beams, plates and pictures on the wall and an open fire gave a nice homely atmosphere. We ordered drinks and sat down to look at the menu. A lot of different pies on view, and more notes that this is what they specialize in. We all ordered on type of pie or another, and sat for what was a fairly long wait. Though not busy, but a few, who were presumably locals were in, or came in after us. Pies were delivered to a table near us, and they looked like a good individual pie. When ours arrived It came with chips and a nice small bowl of minted mushy peas and some chips. I asked if there was any gravy, and was told It was in the pie, but if I wanted more they would fetch some. It was then we found that the 'pie' was in fact a pot dish approx 5 inches across and about 2 inches deep. This was covered with a thin crust, which was not crusty, and collapsed into the ample gravy within the bowl. The small chunks of meat in the bowl I will say were soft and very tasty. The chips were crisp, but not sure they were home sliced and cooked or were from the freezer. As said the peas were nice. The the meal was just 5p short of £11.00 was a disgrace. My wifes ' small' meat and potato pie was that, and it came with a smaller bowl of peas and a small bowl of pickled cabbage. Very poor for 5p under £9.00 with an indefferent filling. I eat in pubs all over the place, but this has to be the worse for value anywhere, I can't understand the reviews praising what it calls pies. The delivery of a sweet which was suppose to be a syrup sponge to the next table, comprising of a small square of sponge on a plate of custard put us off, as they are asking £5.20 for this. Along with the dearest pint of Timothy Taylors shandy I have ever had, I can only think the regular people who come can only consider that they are part of an expensively exclusive dining club. I don't mind paying good money for meals if they are well done and prepared, but this place is just a pretencious rip off. If you want a proper pie, there is a cafe across the road, or most supermarkets have a superior pie range .Both will be better than this. It gets a poor as the filling of the bowl was very tasty. On the other hand service was fine.

Having lived in the area for a number of years I drop into the Waggon and Horses maybe twice a year in the hope that it has changed for the better......it never fails to disappoint. Drab atmosphere, awful old worn furniture and decor, average food and bar prices that make the Ritz seem cheap. I went in today and the barman or maybe Landlord was less than welcoming and seemed somewhat stressed that I did not want surge Guinness but instead needed a few moments to reconsider my choice of drink, a poor attitude I think. Come on WaG and H you are in a premier location with many walkers and cyclists adorning the best walk routes in the Peak District and the Tour de France route.....many people want to come to the area and you have an opportunity to make a killing without ripping people off but you really need some vision! If you can't do it hand the pub to some one who can.
