We've been coming to Hawes for many years and always have an Indian meal and given the time of year the restaurant is always quiet. So when we visited this week, we weren't surprised that only two tables were occupied and both of these were ordering drinks and starters. Being older, we can't usually manage a starter and therefore just ordered our main course, which we assumed would be prepared at the same time, or just after the starters for the other two tables. But no, that seemed beyond the ability of the kitchen staff, so we had to wait until the starters and mains had been served to the other tables before they could prepare our one course. However, throughout our wait of over an hour, the kitchen was able to handle takeaway orders in the usual 20 to 30 minutes. Whilst the food was fine, we won't be returning to Voujon on our future visits to Hawes, there are numerous other eateries where the service is as good as the food.

Great Indian food. Cash only, and we struggled to find an up to date menu online (but will attach one from August 2024 to this review). Staff were friendly , food (for takeaway) was ready when promised and the food was great. Atmosphere in the restaurant is unusual - it looks like an old pub with whitewashed walls - but seemed clean and airy. A great meal at a fair price!

Voujon Indian Cuisine Main Street, Hawes in the North Yorkshire Dales. DL8 3 RD Tel: 01969 667314. Date of visit: 11 July 2024 On what is rapidly becoming a typical English summers day, grey, wet and cool, I set off on the A684 the beautiful scenic route to see what Hawes village in the Yorkshire dales had to offer. On the way down I required some fuel so stopped at a little petrol station, I think, D. T. Close on the A 684 I was just about to get the hose to fill up when a very pleasant lady arrived and completely took over, she asked how much and went on to fill the car for me! How bloody good and old fashioned is that? This is James Herriot Country she said! Hawes is a very busy little place with hundreds of tourists doing what tourist do best. Get in the way! A walk through the village where you will find the usual array of gift shops, outdoor clothing shops, restaurants, cafés, ice cream parlours and the odd SPA. There are plenty of pubs. Well worth a visit. There is a little museum which unfortunately was closing when I arrived, but I was not too keen on forking out a fiver just to have a look round. There is a quirky little railway train carriage which has been converted to a small type of caffe. Which again was closed! There did not seem to be much in the way of coffee houses, but I did find a really interesting restaurant come café, The Wensleydale Pantry, who were quite happy to serve me with just a coffee! And it was conveniently situated right across the road from the Voujon Indian restaurant. So, I killed some time whilst waiting for the Indian to open at 1730 hours. I arrived at 1740, In this very small 34 or so seater restaurant. Situated between, and behind the White Hart and the Fountain inn on Main Street. The front door was wide open the lights were on, but it looked like no one was home. Eventually this very young-looking guy popped up from nowhere. It was quickly evident that this guy could hardly speak a word of English! Anyway, I managed to extract some information from him, but it would have been easier to extract Hen’s teeth! I managed to get his name, I think, Rifadta. or Rivalta, who managed to inform me that he was new and had come from Bangladesh. Anyway, it was hard work. He managed to serve me with a bottle of Cobra but completely forgot the glass and the bottle opener!!! The place is tired and in need of a good makeover, decked out with a very amateurish paint job of Black and an off white. There was an attempt to add some interest with the inclusion of Elephants and flowered wallpaper on one wall. Then a few minutes later the ‘Boss’ had arrived carrying in boxes of supplies and cases of Cobra. He indicated that he would be with me shortly. Eventually, Alum, who was the front of house manager came and sorted out the cobra and took my order. He informed me that the restaurant had been there for over twenty-three years and looking round I would agree with that. What I struggle to understand is, a restaurant that serves top-class food can allow itself to look so tired. I ordered from the extensive menu a couple of poppadom’s with the pickle tray. Nice fresh Pops and a nice pickle tray with a spicy onion relish. I decided on my benchmark starter of sheikh Kebab, I have to say that this was absolutely first class the spicing was spot on Piping hot and up there with the best of them. I asked Alum what he would recommend for a main course to which he suggested the Voujon special, marinated chicken strips with a Keema and cooked together to give a deep Savory and spicy dish. Trust me it was perfect. Pilau rice fluffy and very tasty. I didn’t fancy any bread today so gave it a miss and although I thought the portions on the small side it was enough for me. The flavours that came out of that kitchen were top notch. There are a few things on the menu that I have never heard of such as Maur, a dish with fresh fennel, or Kodu Lamb chops with a butternut squash and Naga pickle. There are some nice fish dishes. It wasn’t overrun with customers, a few telephone takeout orders, a couple came in who said their meal was also spot on and went on to inform me that they travelled quite extensively round the area trying different curry houses and passed on a couple of recommendations. Watch this space! So, all in all, once the Faulty Towers thing had got over itself the place has real potential, they have no competition. prices very fair as well given the times we are in, £33.00. Parking can be a bit difficult! I’m going to award 8.5 out of 10.

Read the great reviews and decided to order a take away. Rang at 17.30 when they opened. Went through the order twice with the guy on the phone and also triple checked the order of an additional curry sauce. We’re advised not to collect for an hour. Figured they were popular and consequently busy. Turned up an hour later, only two people in the restaurant. Meal was still not ready. Waited another 5-7 minutes. When I checked the order, no additional curry sauce. Asked for the fourth time for this additional item. (Got charged £5 for a minimal amount of sauce) Paid and took home (took 4 mins to get home) Horrified! The meal was Luke warm. The pilau rice with onions had no onions, but yes we had been charged extra. The butter chicken came in a pale pink cold sauce that tasted like neat sugar syrup. Couldn’t eat it - went straight in the bin. I’ve visited a lot of Indian restaurants/takeaways over the years. This was the worst ever. Save your cash and go elsewhere. They’re probably pocketing much of the cash anyway. It certainly doesn’t get spent on quality ingredients.

The beautiful Dales village of Hawes might sound like an unlikely place to find an Indian restaurant but, with a little imagination, Hawes could stand in for Shimla, Darjeeling, Ooty, or one of those other Indian hill stations set in a fertile, green valley. Voujon is tucked away in a small courtyard, just off the Market Place, and indeed you could easily miss it, which would be a shame as it’s one of the best Indian restaurants we have visited in the north of England. Inside, the restaurant is small and cozy, decorated by wall coverings featuring festival elephants, and with a warming fire on a cold February evening, adding to the sense that you could well be spending the evening in a delightful hill station restaurant. This was our fifth visit to Voujon and we have never been disappointed. We have rarely strayed far from the usual classics, such as Butter Chicken and Lamb Tikka Masala, but have found the portions generous, the meat tender, and the sauces rich and full of flavour. With a bottle of house dry, white wine, the bill represents excellent value for money.

We were looking forward to a curry night in our little cottage in Hawes - Big disappointment. There seems to have been a trend in UK over the past few decades for curry to have become sweeter. Our usual choice is Butter Chicken but a negative TA review citing it as over sweet made us choose a Chicken Tikka Masala, unfortunately same issue! Curry should be savoury, not like a spicy dessert. Other things we ordered were good (although a very strange raita), but the sweet chicken curry ruined it. Also, this place is cash only.

I’m always dubious about curry houses in small towns or villages as I’m originally from Bradford where we’re spoilt for choice with so many fantastic Indian restaurants. However, I have to say that the food in here is absolutely gorgeous and up there with some...

Had a really nice takeaway here. Polite and helpful as we ordered over the phone. Tandoori king prawns, chicken tikka plus starters, side dishes etc were great. Excellent food and service. We'll be back very soon. David

Was looking forward to a great curry but fell short. Owner seemed patronising when I asked for card machine and reminded was a cash only . My friends prawn dish was undercooked, the poppodoms were not fresh, and the chutnies were pretty tasteless. We won’t...

Sadly the wait for food really put a dampener on our meal. We only ordered two curries with a side of rice and it took just over an hour for this to arrive at our table. I understand the food is fresh, but the curry was not unlike those I've had before, it was really not worth that length of wait, especially in a restaurant that only has about 10 tables. I believe this is due to the takeaway orders too, although these were also taking over an hour at a time. Has potential as the meal was nice, but if you don't want to wait an hour at least I would not recommend.

Looking forward to a indian meal only to find they only take cash payments. Tried to get cash from village atms and found they were all empty. One must wonder in these days especially since covid why a restaurant is only dealing in cash. I suspect but can't confirm the reason for this .

This was our second visit and yet again it didn’t disappoint. We were advised to book and you can see why. Great food served by friendly and attentive staff. Very reasonably priced into the bargain. Just a shame we live 220 miles away.

So dont expect fine dinning or glitzy decor if the look of the place is your priority dont visit. If you like indian food cooked extremely well do visit. Small so book cash only get over it we all used cash once in our lifetime....

Just had the most fantastic takeaway from Amontola, the food was delicious especially the onion bhajis! The Tikka Masala was rich and creamy and the chicken was moist. Very generous portions too. I would definitely recommend this place.
