Amazing beer garden with buckets of atmosphere and lovely vibes. Fantastic beer selection and the staff are always lovely

Booked for Sunday lunch last minute after another restaurant cancelled our reservation. Extremely happy we stumbled across this little gem. The food was exactly what we needed after a big night (very reasonable price too) and the staff were funny, delightful and accommodating. Will definitely be back.

Lovely funky friendly pub with tons of personality, interesting things on tap and nice staff.

The team here were amazing! We celebrated 3 birthdays here with a table of about 21/22 of us and they really made us feel welcomed. The food was timely, correct and tasted great! The prices were definitely fair for the service also! They couldn't do any more for us even if they tried! 10/10!! Especially the guy with the curly hair and glasses! Made us feel welcomed and even gave us a couple of free baby guiness !!

As good a roast you can hope for in a pub. I went for the trinity of meats, on which the chicken element was unfairly meagre in size. I pointed this out and they were happy to put it right and bring more :) Extra gravy was available, and an array of condiments. Good selection of beers and ciders, friendly staff, nice atmos in the garden on a Sunday afternoon.

Went with the family on a Sunday to try their roast. I must say, it tasted amazing and was well cooked and seasoned, I could have done with a slightly bigger portion but I guess I am bit greedy. Staff was lovely and really polite, definitely recommend

Excellent mothers' day roast!! Friendly service, great selection of beers & ales. Lovely proper pub atmosphere, food portions were generous for the price - which is on the cheaper side for a roast at a pub these days. Child's size option was exceptional value for money as well. Looking forwards to checking out their events later this year. Will be returning!!

Googled Sunday roasts in Bristol and this place came up. Thought we would give it a go and glad we did! Reasonable prices for delicious food! Atmosphere was good and staff were super friendly. Would definitely recommend.

One of the nicest pubs an lovely bar staff. Have been here couple times on my own or with friends, great selection of drinks and sometimes we would come here for quiz’s evenings. Also I had lost my phone and my phone was handed in in this pub and they were so lovely to keep my phone safe till I came back and collected it. Thank you so much for that. Definitely recommend to come and visit this cosy pub.

Dan is an absolute legend. Cauliflower cheese and churros absolutely scranned. Would definitely recommend the roasts and the bar staff are absolutely lovely. Come to the volly!!!!!

The loveliest staff and the best roast! One of my favourite watering holes in Bristol. Everyone is so lovely and kind. So much fun and a safe place. Plus they do a banging pub quiz.

Yeah this was sick, good roast, nice pub dog, and Gareth’s Volley Pale makes for a delicious pint!

A friend of mine recommended this pub to me when I told him I was visiting Bristol for the weekend, and I'll need to buy him a beer to thank him. The quality and choice of beer was exceptional, the staff were very friendly and efficient, and the outdoor seating area was well heated in what was very average February weather. I look forward to coming back next time I'm in Bristol.

I'm glad I wasn't hungry when I went to this pub. When the waiter placed my roast on the table I thought they forgot to put my 'piece of meet' ( because it was vegetarian version ), then o realized that the piece was a chunk of boiled celeriac that was similar to a potato. The quantity wasn't great either although I ended up full as I've not a great stomach. My friend's opinion for the non vegetarian one was fine.

Lovely staff, they were very helpful and generous with us and our toddler. Great quality roast dinner! Really recommend - the quality of the meat was great and it was all well cooked. Chicken was moist, beef was flavourful and juicy, pork was beautifully seasoned and juicy. The only small thing I'd say would be I'd prefer just slightly larger portions but the quality was so good that it's still a 5 star roast. Thank you guys for a great roast!

Didn't eat, just beers. Planned to meet there and move on, but such great service and beers, we stayed there all afternoon....we'll be back in the new year.....

Haven't had the food so can't say but lovely ambience, terrific owners and cheap pints as far as Bristol goes for really great ales.

Great place for a pint after work or shopping, inside was full but plenty of space uncover outside, nice to see a box of still cider on the bar!

The food by La Cocina is absolutely fantastic, really enjoyed the steak and squid rings I had previously, but also loving the tacos they're doing now. The chicken tacos are seriously spicy (which I think too many places shy away from) but there are loads of non-spicy options if that's what you're into.

Actually found this place on a whim - was strolling past and me and my friend wondered into the beer garden (was drawn in by some sweet graffiti!). Lovely pub, delicious pints, and a great atmosphere will definitely be coming back here :)

We popped in for a Sunday roast this week having found the Volunteer Tavern almost by accident. Both the food and atmosphere were amazing. It had a wonderful community pub feel and the staff clearly work hard to make it a relaxed, fun and friendly experience for customers. There’s also a hidden gem for Simpsons fans. We’ll be back next time we are in Bristol!

Had some good meals in here in the past from various previous pop-ups, and like it as a pub, but very poor roast today. Pork was very fatty/undercooked, crackling was flaccid, and a lot of the veg was undercooked. Whole plate was cold too. Nobody checked how the food was at any point either, and wasn't that busy to justify that kind of service. Would still go back for a drink but would not eat here again in a rush.

Didn’t want to make a big deal as visited for a birthday, but would have complained and asked for money back. It was not worth £14.50.

We ordered beef roasts and are a bit disappointed with the volume of the plates. I know other pubs serve more at the same price. But the atmosphere was nice as well as the staff.

Lovely outside seating area, great presentation. Fluffy Yorkshire’s. Superb service, just superb.

What a beautiful establishment,the covered area was dry, warmly lit,has heat lamps and a great vibe outside. Inside, the bar staff are inviting,talkative and enjoyable to talk to and be served by. Fresh pints and clean lines,good variety of options and the food looks TASSTTYYYYY. Highly recommend.

Always known as a great pub, but the new menu is absolutely superb. We had the chicken leg dish and the food was so flavourful. 100% going back to work our way through the menu.

One of the best off the cuff pub meals I've had for a while. We ordered the chicken wings (skinny but tasty), calamari (garlic sauce was amazing) chicken dirty frys... yummy and the corn on the cob which wad presented well and tasted amazing.. booze also good and cheap.. 2 rounds and and dinner... bargain

Amazing 100/100 roasts. Me and my friend had a range of roasts vegetarian pork and Beef and all were amazing. We were told our roasts were going to take a little longer which was okay and they gave us extra cauliflower cheese to make up for it. I will defo be returning for some cheesecake !!

The food was amazing. Had the Elote, pork belly bites and tradicional Cuban sandwich. The sandwich was especially good. The pickles extra generous and super tasty. Thank you!

We tried the new menu on opening day and we’re blown away ! Fresh, vibrant flavours & exciting new combos : never had nachos like that before . The cauliflower wings were certainly big enough to share . I went for Buffalo sauce which I thought was medium spiced though my dinner date rated then as very spicy 🥵 Staff were great too Definitely check out La Cocina food and spread the word ! Huge thanks

Nice tasting roast - but I got a takeaway box as my mates wanted to leave . It took a while to come - then was a tiny portion with 3 roast potatoes and no veg apart from a burnt parsnip . They charged me 14 quid . Didn’t offer me a refund . Poor roast - nice pints . Sunday ruined

Been here many times recently, the food is always amazing. The roast is the business, and the Japanese street food pop up is to die for! Everyone I have come with have loved it too. The quiz on a Monday is really fun and just general vibe of the place is fun and relaxed. Sometimes come in on my own and have made friends with many people, its that kind of place. Very varied selection of beers etc and the staff are always friendly. Thanks!

We were a family group of 7 including a 3 month old baby. We waited around for 15 minutes before we could find a table but as soon as we sat down wanting to order some food we were told to leave. Apparently the pub doesn’t have a license for babies after 9.00 pm. They still took our drinks order - we then had to bolt down the drinks / left some as we were being thrown out. Not a place to recommend

No cash. No American Express. No WiFi. Kitchen closed at 6pm at Sunday dinner time. Don’t they want the business? I used to love this place…

No more need be said. The staff couldn’t give a monkeys, the food, while not terrible, wasn’t what was advertised and the service was non existent. Wouldn’t recommended.

I know it’s hard for pubs to pay minimum wage but not only these guys support their workers they put customers at the forefront. We planned for a massive pub crawl but such is the excellence of this bar we stayed all day. Staff great, atmosphere great, owners great. Who needs kings when you got this bar

Came for a family meal. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating however we were informed that there are no gluten-free options available as a result of cross contamination and all foods supposedly containing some form of gluten. The menu seems fantastic for vegetarians/vegans however please note that this place is not ideal for coeliacs. You can still enjoy drinks though, just not the food

Booked here on the off chance as we stayed in bristol for the night, booked online, turned up at the pub for Sunday lunch, all I can say is superb, the waitress was lovely, the food was outstanding, best Sunday lunch I have had out for a very long time, piping hot, all homemade and plenty of it, a hidden gem, would highly recommend, 5 stars from me

All heritage of a once good pub has been lost. Staf are ignorat and clueless and beeers on offer are confi=using and overpriced. Basically our patty are unlikelt to vist again.

The place falls apart, toilette disgusting and mediocre food for what they charge for it. The place was packed as soon as it opened at 1pm, reviews saying that was good but waiting time so long and warmed up food.

Really friendly pub with great outside space and good selection of vegan beers. The menu, also vegan, is really tasty and home cooked. Only downside is apparently the men's toilet, get that sorted and it's 5 stars

We haven’t eaten out much in Bristol so this was our first visit. It was a family get together and we would have booked but the tavern does not do bookings. It was a cold Sunday lunchtime but the atmosphere inside was warm and friendly. Nearly everyone was young and most of our party, frankly, were not. Sadly there was no room at all inside but we were invited to take a table in the partly covered dining area outside and to the rear. Even that was pretty busy but we managed to get the 5 of us seated and we placed our order at the bar.A choice of beef or chicken and some veggie/vegan options. Despite the overhead heaters we were quite cold but decided to shrug it off. Fortunately when our roasts arrived these looked quite magnificent. The price, at £10 each, was also extremely reasonable. My beef was tender and the portion was generous. The plate came heaped with veg, great roast potatoes and a nice Yorkshire pudding. The chicken option was also judged to be excellent. Lashings of gravy had also been added to each plate.The service was remarkably swift considering how busy the pub was, and also very friendly.I would have given a 5-star rating had we not been so cold.

El jefe, Peter, es obstinado, pero es un tipo excelente, pero si no lo es, bueno, el lugar simplemente no lo hace. . . .

Amazing had an incredible experience here as it’s DOG FRIENDLY and Willow definitely approves staff were enthusiastic and amazing at their job and highly praise goes to the chefs for a fantastic 5star food it was mouth watering will be making more frequent visits here over the next 3 year

Visité el domingo asado como lo recomendó. Un lugar modesto desde afuera, pero bullicioso por dentro. Hay una pequeña zona de bar, pero muchos asientos cubiertos afuera.Ambiente agradable y animado con una gran variedad de cervezas y sidras a precios bastante buenos.La mayoría de la gente estaba comiendo, así que la comida tardó más de una hora y media en llegar, así que ordene tan pronto como llegue, luego siéntese y disfrute de la cerveza

Decidí probar este lugar nuevamente cuando estaba en la ciudad para otro tour de cerveza, esta vez con dos de nuestros hijos y un amigo de Chicago. Las visitas de regreso no siempre son tan buenas como la primera: la cerveza y las hamburguesas eran muy buenas, pero tal vez no tan memorables como la vez anterior.

Cerca de Cabot Circus, este pequeño oasis cuenta con un gran equipo. Elección superlativa de cervezas a un costo razonable y súper comida de cocinas emergentes que sirven de todo, desde tazones veganos hasta kebabs asesinos de forma rotativa.

I've been to this pub many times over the past 2 years and it never disappoints. Everything i want from a pub is at the volunteers tavern, from a small traditional interior to good selection of drinks to the wooden cladded smoking area, this is a great boozer. The staff are on point too, can't wait to try the food

I went to the Volunteer Tavern for lunch with my husband after reading about Naasto Baasto pop-up kitchen there. The pup is small, but there was no problem getting a seat when we got there, though the table was booked for later in the day. There was a good selection of drinks, but what really made it was the food! There is only a small menu, between us we tried most of it, but it was really well cooked and arrived as quickly as you can expect when it's cooked to order. Most of the menu is vegatarian (predominantly vegan), and was absolutely delicious, I've been thinking about the coriander chutney and the chapatis ever since. Will definitely be visiting again so we can try the rest of the munu.

Después de leer sobre la comida, pensamos que el sábado a mediodía era un buen momento para probar un nuevo lugar. Aunque el pub es un poco difícil de encontrar, valió la pena dejar el bullicio de Cabot Circus. Encontramos un bar tradicional muy acogedor que sirve una gran variedad de sidras y cervezas. La comida era increíble, un menú centrado, principalmente vegetariano y vegano, y todo estaba lleno de increíbles sabores indios en el estilo Gujarati. Cada plato fue preparado con amor y cuidado para presentar los ricos sabores profundos que siempre busca al comer este estilo de cocina. No puedo dejar de pensar en el pollo al curry, espero poder volver pronto.

Mi hijo y yo buscamos este lugar en nuestro tour de cerveza de Bristol basado en una fuerte recomendación de un amigo de CAMRA. Sirven una buena variedad de cervezas de barril y barril, de las cuales probamos algunas, pero lo más destacado para nosotros fue en realidad las hamburguesas vegetarianas, tanto las opciones vegana como la de halloumi.

Los perros del pub atacaron a mi cachorro cuando era muy pequeño. El dueño no trató de controlarlos y no se disculpó. Mi novio y yo tuvimos que arrastrar a sus perros y rescatarlo cuando estaban encima de él.

No es un lugar que encontrarías a menos que lo estés buscando. El asado tiene una buena relación calidad-precio y es un pub acogedor en el interior, el único inconveniente es que es un poco pequeño y la comida podría ser un poco más caliente. Pero por el valor no se puede quejar demasiado.

Nice atmosphere, good outside space, great drinks but and it’s a BIG BUT....the food quality was absolutely shocking. I went with a bunch of mates 25-30 years old and 2 meals were left entirely while 4 of the remaining 5 were politely finished.

Traditional pub at the edge of the modern city centre. A bit hard to find but worth the effort. Seating was available inside and out in a nice courtyard setting. The service was fast and efficient, the staff helpful and fun and the prices very reasonable. The food was prepared and served by Hope of HOBA fame. We had her speciality kebabs. The quality and portion sizes were top rate as expected. Not in residence for long so worth checking. That said, the pub is still worth a pit stop for local ales.
