Nice atmos and friendly staff, close to my house and the food was pretty darn good. Prices were pretty good value too. Can't complain really, nice place for dinner if you're in the area.

Not sure if the chef was having a night off but the food was really poor. The Calamari starter was a huge plate of heavily battered squid and vegetables. Then £15 for a very ordinary chicken and chips. Won't be returning in a hurry

I have eaten here twice now, most recently for lunch today (04/03/14). both times the food has been excellent. The first time i had a hand made burger which was honestly the best burger ive ever had in a pub. today i was hoping for a burger but "they are only available weekends"???? This i found a little strange, undetered i had fish and chips, whic was also awesome, proper beer batter, all properly made fresh, nothing bought in, even the cod was extremley tasty, homemade tartare sauce etc. soo food excellent, a little pricey at £14 but you generally get what you pay for and this was no exception- what do you want from a London gastro pub?? Alos had dessert which was very tasty......Quirky surroundings and fab food - highly recommended. I must say there are some great food pubs in this area so competition is fierce this obviously keeps them all on their toes, this is no bad thing as it will keep them all at the top of their game with room for complacency..

My brother-in-law lives in the area booked a table for his aunties birthday, I had never been here before however It looks reasonably nice from the outside and the staff greeted us in a friendly manner; our table was well out of the way of the busy restaurant which was nice. The waiter took our drinks order which was fine if not over familiar especially for the elderly guests (and for a sunday!) and then a waitress put our drinks on the table and my daughter is a celiac so obviously asked her what she could have and she was very helpful giving suggestions etc. However the waiter was standing by the bar talking when we'd been ready to order for around 15 minutes after this point !! He eventually took our order and as it was a sunday I opted for the venison roast. The selection on the menu (baring in mind it was sunday) was actually rather good; the only thing I will say is another vegetarian option might be nice. The food took an acceptable time to arrive and it was very pleasant! We requested for a candle to be placed in our aunts pudding and they were more than happy to do so but what really impressed us all was that when bringing the pudding to the table the waitress was singing along with us but not only in english but when she heard my husbands family singing in Welsh she did also; the whole table really appreciated that little gesture (and that they'd found another welsh person in London!)over all the service was mixed: the waiter was standard for London; not awful but pretty average however as you can gather we were impressed by the welsh singing waitress who was actually very helpful. The food was very nice and we had no major problems so over all it was a nice day out but I do warn you that it is a tad pricey !!

We decided to have a group Christmas Sunday Roast at this place. All the prices on the menu were £2 higher than when we booked. We ended up paying £18 for a Roast Lunch. It was nothing special if not to say pretty mediocre. They then screwed up our desert order, deserts didn't arrive at the same time and the bill didn't tie up either. All in all a pretty unpleasant experience and definitely not worth the money. There are so many nicer places in North London where you can get better food for less money.

When Villiers Terrace first opened the food and ambience were great. It seems to have let things slide a bit unfortunately. I visited with my sister and we had some decent wine - the wine list is pretty good. We ordered french onion soup to start and risotto for mains. The soup was tasty - perfect for the cold nights but the risotto was undercooked - no excuses for such a faux pas! Some of the clientele visiting this place are a bit, lively, shall we say. The staff have their own little social thing going on and don't seem too interested in good customer service. Nevertheless it is an ok pub to visit in Crouch End as some nights there is excellent music on, and the doormen are friendly. Overall though there is a sense of could try harder.

My wife and I used the function room and had a buffet for our sons christening. My wife booked it after talking with the new manager. Being new he was unsure about charges for a buffet but the agreed budget was £85 and he agreed that he "would make sure that there was enough food for all the guests" for that budget. The buffet was to be served at 2pm. We arrived at around 1.45pm and at 2.15ish we asked when the food would be arriving. We were told that the manager wasn't there and that they were waiting for us to tell the what we wanted. They hadn't been informed at all about the budget or the agreement and after some explaining the bar person on duty frustratingly, simply split the £85 into several items from the bar menu! This amounted to just enough food for about half the party. With most of the party left disappointed I went back to the bar to order more and was told that there was no more buffet style food. They had ran out of sausage rolls, scotch eggs etc. The only things she could suggest were steak sandwiches and chicken wings. Not really appropriate and affordable finger food for 10 or more people but I had to get something so I ordered 4 more lots of chips and chicken wings for an extra £35!!! The person serving didn't seem to understand at all that we were under the impression we were getting a service when we booked the function room.I know this is new to the management but its very disappointing when you think you've organised everything properly and the venue lets you down. It looked bad on us too as it appeared as though we'd scrimped on the food when it was actually discussed with the manager and he said £85 would be enough. We took his advice. The guests all had lunch earlier so it wasn't as though people took more than their share. There simply wasn't enough and this was due to the lack of communication between management and staff on the day.Bearing in mind we did explain the agreement to the staff on the day and and received nothing we agreed I also emailed the pub the following day or so and explained all the above. The reply I received was as follows:"The manager that spoke with your wife was taken ill and had not written the arrangements in the booking book. This is what caused the problems".They acknowledged the problem but still weren't willing to do anything about it. I at least expected some sort of concession if not a refund on the extra food I had to order due to their poor communication.Very poor service.

I visited here recently and was surprised by how poor it was.The food was expensive with tiny portions, it tasted fine although nothing special and certainly not worth the price tag.Drinks predictably were very expensive. The decor is very nice although strangely the toilets were disgusting, they were more fitting for an inner city night club. Foul smelling and dirty.I'd give it a miss, there are much better places around.

Have been going to this pub for many years and have thoroughly enjoyed every experience there. I recently visited and was told of new management, however I could still see all the familiar staff faces. Went to the pub with my young family and had a lovely Saturday evening dinner. The new menu looks great and the food we ate was first class, the new head chef seems to be working! After dinner my wife and I, dropped the kids at home and headed back to the pub to meet some friends for a couple of drinks and bit of a boogie. The Villiers Terrace has great DJs every friday and saturday night, playing a range of old school/recent music. On these nights there is a great atmosphere and all the crouch end local yummy mummys and co head down to dance the night away.Overall had another great time here, bar and waiting staff were very friendly and ready to help. And the new manager seemed really nice also.Definitely going back next week!!

It really takes an awful experience for me to write a review but I feel that I really need to warm people about this place.Went with a friend and our 8 month old babies after a swimming session in Park rd, and after finding the very limited menu ourselves, we decided to order. When we were eventually greeted by the manager he informed us he had only took over the place 4 days ago so didn't have any bread or decaff coffee! So reluctantly we ordered and I chose to have tea instead. The waiter then proceeded to bring over the hot tea, which came in a strange glass mug, and place it right next to my little one in his high chair - even though I told him not to! Obviously my baby reached out to grab it straight away and I had to quickly push it off the table on to myself. Thankfully so harm was done - but considering the waiter had also placed the knives and forks next to the babies it was clear he didn't have a clue.To add insult to injury I was still charged for the tea although I didn't pay for it!!Overall a terrible experience that I'm still recovering from.

Three of us went to Villers Terrace yesterday to treat ourselves to Sunday lunch. It was a beautiful sunny day and the garden was lovely. . But when our meal finally arrived (two of us ordered roast beef) it was hugely disappointing. Nothing quite like "cold" roast beef with "cold" veg, potatoes and gravy, we debated sending it back, but after taking ages to have our order taken and having one plate almost poured over one of our party, we felt a bit nervous about the consequences. My husband was very happy with his salmon and don't get me wrong ours was fairly tasty, but if I cooked it and gave it to my guests that cold I would have been inconsolable. So when we asked for the bill, I asked the waitress to feed back to the kitchen that the food had tasted nice but was completely cold. We got no apology or feed back, just ignored and we even left a tip as felt we couldn't blame the waitress, but with hindsight "why oh why" 65 pounds thrown away and rubbish service strikes again and we were just too soft !

Ate here the other night (mid week). Was v quiet in the dining area, just another table with a family of 5 eating there. The service was soooo slow! Eventually got our food, waited about 40 mins for main course to arrive!. A shame, as the food was pretty good when we finally got it. There was little in the way of atmosphere though due to lack of other diners. Seems to be under different ownership than it used to be.

Just returned from a celebratory meal at this place. I have to say the food was wonderful, everything we had was above average so hats off the chef. The waiting staff were also doing a grand job. Unfortunately we were seated directly next to an area that had been hired by a private party... There were only a few people when we sat down, but by time our main course arrived there was about 50 people pretty rowdy leaning over the partition. I dont by any means blame the party, they were actually very civilised... But I just think it strange to put a dinning table in the centre of the private functon area without warning when we booked?! After our main course we explained to the waitress and said the main bar was far quieter we would like to finish our drinks there, she was very apologetic and said she would speak to the manager. We were finally reseated on the other side or the bar in a much quieter very pleasant dining area. This area was attended by the manager who pretty much ignored us and approached us only to take our dessert order which a frosty 'desert?' no hello, no apology for having to move..... When we eventually ordered the bill I explained the feedback including the excellent food/drink but just the suggestions that in future when people book, perhaps an advance warning if the tale will amoungst a party and the response was minimal and defensive and I was told that perhaps I should have enquired myself if i was bothered and there was nothing he could do.... Also seemed surprised that we had booked in advance?! The bill arrived and we noticed the 3 glasses of wine we had with dinner had been removed, however had still amazingly been overcharged by £100 as it encorporated someone elses tab, so check your bill carefully. We of course had it sorted out in the end but with a short,' yeah sorry, it's even now though' and left with a calculator to check. In short, this is a lovely place to eat/drink but just a shame the manager Is lacking in the people skills that would smooth these mistakes over and ensure return custom.... Amazing meal but nasty aftertaste.

It really takes allot for me to put in the effort to write a review. To describe today's experience at this establishment as a complete disaster wouldn't be doing it justice. We had a table for 20 booked for a wedding reception for 2pm. When we arrived, we were informed that they were under the impression that the booking was for 6pm. Right, so a little bit of a surprise but you work with it, right? Wrong. We were told in no uncertain terms that they "weren't ready for us". No apology, nothing. We were told that we had to choose from the menu as the buffet wasn't ready. This in itself wasn't a trainsmash as the food on the menu looked fairly good, despite there only being a handful of dishes. Once we had some drinks ordered, I asked the waitress if we could store a bottle of champagne in the fridge and open it later, which she reluctantly agreed to. I'm not the kind of person to do this, as these people are also trying to make a living, but as it was a gift on their wedding day I tried my luck. While waiting for the food, which took much longer than it should have, one of the people in our group got hungry so bought a packet of crisps from the bar. Having then noticed that they were 2 months out of date, she returned it. The waitress then went through all the packets they had, none of which turned out to be in date. Simple, remove them from the bar? No, put the expired bag back on the bar with the rest and continue selling them. We started getting service from what I can only think is the manager, who seemed to have a massive issue with serving us. When food arrived, it was pretty much dumped on the table for us to sort out while he went to fetch the next plates. My wife and I both ordered the hamburgers off the menu, which were completely raw inside, and cold. Really cold. Some of the other people ordered fish dishes, of which each and every one was burnt. The chicken dishes that some of the people ordered were the only ones that nobody had any issues with. After the meal, we asked if we could open the champagne in the fridge to toast the newlyweds' special day, and the manager told the waitress to refuse it. Fair enough, but at least have the decency to come and say it yourself, instead of putting your staff on the spot like that. I was also informed that during the booking process, she dealt with the manager over the phone who was also incredibly rude and most of the time "too busy to deal with her". I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. We felt like we were imposing the whole time, the food was terrible, the service was terrible, the organization didn't exist, this place gets a big fat no from me. Never again, not even for free.

My favourite destination for a full evening out and good for lunch too. A lot of Crouchenders like shabby/distressed/grungey and a number of cafes/restaurants reflect that to my bewilderment; fortunately there is Villiers Terrace smartly decorated and comfortable to be in. The cocktails are first rate with a number half price on a Wednesday. The food is very good, on a par with St James but more expensive and slightly more adventurous. The lunch/early evening menu is very good value. I haven't had any problems with the service here at all and was surprised to read in some reviews that it was an issue. Some of the waiting staff could do with being a bit more smiley at the margin but I'll take competent and solemn over smiley and incompetent any day. A bit more warmth wouldn't hurt though!

I have been to this pub many times but it is the first time we have eaten there in a group. We went on a Saturday night and it is advisable to book to get a good table over by the fire side. As it was we did not book so were seated at the other side of the pub which is a bit cold and less atmospheric. There is an extensive wine list here, as well as good cocktails but no real ales or good cider on draught unfortunately. Six of us had various dishes including lentil salad, fish starters and mains, and a gratin. Overall the food was very good apart from the gratin, which was lacking in sauce and therefore rather dry. Service was very good at the table, although some of the bar staff could do with being more friendly. We did not have time for dessert as we were off to the King's Head to see comedy, but we will be back. A good pub in Crouch End with average gastropub prices.

Villiers Terrace is a bit off the beaten track, being a good way down Park Road and therefore away from the main Crouch End drag. That means that one's more likely to get a table at the weekend than at other eateries in CE, which seem to be increasingly catering for families with food to match. The menu is quite eclectic, taking inspiration from far and wide, which helps to lift the food a bit above the average gastropub. My miso crusted cod on pak choi and mash with a sherry soy sauce was perfectly cooked with a good balance of unusual flavours. My partner's huevos rancheros with chorizo was a hearty plate ideal for the wintertime and a side of chips had exactly the right combination of crisp exterior and soft interior. A pleasant and well priced bottle of S African chenin blanc was exactly the right accompaniment. All in all, strongly recommended for a weekend lunch, but beware attention-seeking children.
