Friendly welcome, lovely setting, plenty of space in car park behind pub. Clean well maintained facilities. Had a really lovely lunch, huge choice of courses including childrens/ smaller appetites menu. Huge portions, we had a wide range of choices from the duck in port/plum sauce to breakfast baguette everything well cooked and beautifully served. Prices really good too, I would highly recommend anyone to try this lovely Inn.

Wel, we thought this would be a nice country pub, how wrong were we. Not very friendly on arrival, we ordered drinks and then went to the bar to order our food. Al okish so far. We waited and waited some more and after 45 ins we asked. Oh they said iyts just being plated up, good we thought. But it came out and went to a tabled that had arrived 30mins after us! So we waited a bit more and then after 1 hour enough was enough, we had had no updates, applolgies or anything so we went to the bar to ask, they knew nothing so we paid for the drinks and went! No appology, no nothing the staff didnt really care. Avoid at all costs and fnd a nce friendly counrty pub that cares about their customers

Impromptu visit as our first choice in nearby Launceston was sadly Infected with loud drunk chavs. Warm welcome as mention before , “ that’s your table “ . After that ……..great Village pub atmosphere , it’s a locals place so respect that . Food was great traditional pub grub , service was great . Proper Rugby Pub too which was an added bonus . Not for snow flakes or those with Champagne tastes and lemonade money . Proper Pub with good food . Dog was also very welcome . Beware the moon

Do not go here, the place was empty on a Sunday dinner time in august, they ran out of the beer we wanted. We ordered food, no Sunday dinner on the menu, I should of just paid for the drinks and walked out. The food was disgusting, my kids both got pizza and chips. Definitely frozen food for everything. Couldn’t wait to get out! There was just locals sat at the bar drinking. The good reviews on this page are wrong.

Rudest welcome we have EVER had! Booked a table a week in advance for a special reunion meal for family from Launceston, Exeter and Dawlish to return to this village pub that had been our lovely local for very many years. We always loved the old place and thought it perfect for this occasion. We arrived in good time and said there were 5 of us instead of 4 and hoped it was OK? Was met with ‘well it’ll have to be won’t it” from the ‘lady’ behind the bar. I thought she was joking at first but she clearly wasn’t! We all sat down and my husband went and ordered drinks checking it was ‘OK’ for our daughter to stay and eat with us after she had driven over an hour to come along and surprise us all. Bar woman said it was OK but continued to glare rudely when any of us passed her (that is when she could lift her ever scowling face from her mobile phone). Our waitress was such a lovely girl. Nothing was too much trouble for her and there were smiles aplenty for us and the service and food itself was very good. The woman behind the bar didn’t raise a smile once. She made us all feel very uncomfortable and didn’t even thank us when we left after parting with a lot of money. We will never return. ABSOLUTELY DISGRACEFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE and whoever employs her should think hard!

I have never experienced anything like it!! I felt like I was in an episode of "litte Britain" in a pub for the "locals". The most miserable bar 'lady'?? I have ever come across. She glared at us out of the side of her eyes constantly. One word answers and not a single smile. MOST BIZZARE! A couple of locals came in and smiles and chats all round. If you want a good laugh at such bizzare behaviour and for a Little Britain experience I would definitely recommend. Lol

Lovely service as well and we were looked after very well. Well done. We all agreed we should like to have this pub back in south Devon, please, from where we had travelled from. Very well done. Lovely looking pub in a pretty setting, we thought we had chosen well! How wrong we were! We weren’t welcomed in, in fact we were immediately told to move our dogs out of the back room! (I had moved them away from a reactive dog that was at the bar). The bar lady just pointed to our table and announced “that’s yours!” The Barman was rude and everything appeared an effort for him. There was a local man sat at the bar talking to the staff and I’ve never met such a rude, ignorant individual, no wonder his dog was grumpy! If we had known where else to go we would have walked out. The food however was impressive and waitress was polite!

We reserved a table by telephone for 6 for a meal on Sunday teatime as it was local to the holiday cottage we were staying in. This a small pub in a small village. When we arrived we walked into a crowded bar. The people stood in the bar area looked at us like we had arrived on a space ship. No one would move to allow us to get to the bar and as we tried to to step around people they turned their backs on us blocking our path. The atmosphere was horrible. When my wife finally spoke to the girl behind the bar she snapped they didn't have a table for 6 as it had been double booked. They offered us two tables of three.....at opposite ends of the pub. This is despite there being tables that could have been moved to fit 6 together. When I fought my way through the locals back to the bar to enquire why the tables couldn't be moved so we could sit together and why this problem hadn't been resolved when they discovered the double booking the girl who refused to look at me and carried on pulling pints told me in no uncertain terms that was the way it was take it or leave it. I politely told her I would leave it and fought my way back through the bodies to my family. We promptly walked out to the sound of sniggering behind us. As we left we did see the only table for 6 occupied by locals smiling at each other. Luckily we found a much friendlier establishment in the nearby town. On reflection I'm glad we left as the scene in the bar was very reminiscent of a scene from the film Dusk til Dawn or perhaps The Hills have Eyes..... If I could give this place zero stars I wouldn't hesitate. This is not a place welcoming to visitors to the area and I can't say strongly enough if you are in the area and looking for a local pub for a meal and you see the Village Inn at Ashwater......keep on driving to to the next town!

I phoned the day before and reserved a table for the evening of his birthday, a bit dubious after reading some of the reviews on here but as soon as we walked through the door I knew I shouldn't of been. Plenty of parking in the car park to the rear, the Village inn has so much character I really enjoyed admiring the decor. We arrived slightly earlier than planned but were shown to our table and given menus. Plenty of choice, we went for steak and curry. The portion sizes were huge, The food was piping hot and delicious. We sadly didn't have room for desert but there was a good selection offered there also. We enjoyed a few games of pool after our meals, the pub was getting busier as we left but all of the locals were friendly and so were the staff. Went on a Friday night with a group of four for a special birthday dinner. Ordered drinks at the bar from a very limited and poor choice. No decent larger on offer! Ordered to sit on the table on the right, sat on the table on the right. When the waitresses came over we were told to move only to be told to move back again. The starters were very nice, but when served they were spilled over the table and left there! The mains came out swimming in oil. The steaks were devoid of color and taste, had looked like they were cooked in a microwave. Had the mixed grill , which was easy over cooked. At the end of the meal(half returned) we complained at the bar. Bar and kitchen staff extremely rude and unhelpful. They told us it was our fault for ‘filing up on starters’ and it was the butcher’s fault citing ‘Philip Warren’ being at fault. And offered us a £2 discount on a £100 bill! Dreadful experience. The lady behind the bar was very aggressive and confrontational and should be ashamed for her terrible customer service. The worst kitchen and bar staff I’ve ever encountered in my life. Dont believe bad reviews. Great food..great quality great quantity. Great beer . Lovely service. Local devon pub full of great devon locals. I'm a foodie..and from London so I'd be the first to mention bad food or services on here. .but can't say a bad word about here. As for chap who would go to wetherspoons..that's 25 mins away..by car and then I bet you couldn't get better food. Probably a barred chap who didn't settle into village live. As for other negative reviews. .I expect they are little lies. From jealous opposition to the pub. Go there and be happy. As for tree growing in roof...that's a vine silly person. Thank you

We visited at short notice over Christmas and had a lovely bar meal. Portions were huge and service good despite if being very busy. We have a wheelchair and it was no problem to get in and out even though it is a very old pub. Can highly recommend it.

Lovely staff who were incredibly helpful with our wheelchair. Good access and excellent disabled loo. The atmosphere was very pleasant, no loud 'muzak', and lots of people enjoying meals. You do need to be hungry, as the portions are pretty large!Staying nearby, we had dinner one evening and lunch another day. The set lunch at £7.5 was very good value.Altogether a lovely friendly Inn to which we hope to return.

We visited the Village Inn Ashwater on Saturday night, although it was very busy with people eating, they quickly accommodated us in a cosy corner of the pub. The food arrived quickly my partner had the curry, my father had a jacket potato and I had the fish and chips. The. Portions were enormous and the food was very tasty. The landlord was friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We are staying for another week and we will definitely be eating here again.

We had a wedding in the village and on the Fri night before, some of the guests made tracks to the Village inn. The restaurant was blocked booked and considering the amount of people that turned up all at similar times the restaurant staff coped admirably. Minimum waiting at the bar for drinks. Good pub food. Friendly banter with the locals A good start to the wedding weekend.

My wife and I have various food allergies, so it was so good to be told that they can adapt the meals to meet our needs. And they did, GF, veg instead of potatoes, you name it, it was done. The food itself was excellent, all four of us had brilliant meals. Well worth a visit

We enjoyed our night at this well run, clean and friendly hotel. The three course evening meal was freshly prepared and delicious. Our room was spotless and well presented. We both are surprised this is only a two star rated hotel, as our experience exceeded many four stars we’ve stayed in. Our breakfast was again delicious. The staff are all attentive and couldn’t do enough for us. It has ample parking and a beautiful rear garden with seating. If we are in the region again, we would wholeheartedly head for The Tumbling Weir, Thank~you

Great venue for lunch, always busy, good food at reasonable prices. Until today, prices have risen, the place was half empty, the food still good but not exceptional so why the price hike? My breaded plaice with chips, peas and tartare sauce was £16.99! It was nice enough, not outstanding and available elsewhere in Sidmouth for a lot less. If they want more profit and less customers I think this approach will work, we will think twice before returning as there are many other places to eat locally that offer better value for similar food.
