This is a proper pub,no frills and very reasonable pricing. It's under new management and already there are some improvements taking place. Very attractive from the outside with well cared for plants. I believe the kitchen is being refurbished which will soon put food on the menu. Compare the prices and service to other local pubs and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Once the kitchen is refurbed I would expect a five star review.

This pub has become the great local pub it deserves to be. With a new landlord and landlady installed, it is now the best (and possibly the cheapest pub) in the Sid Valley. Live music has also made a welcome return to the pub with bands on every month or so. The first event was packed. So good to see this friendly, welcoming pub back on its thriving again. Come down and support it.

Lovely evening Saturday night with Hodge Podge music and atmosphere great. Great crowd. One thing that worried me a very well behaved cute baby with mum and dad just wish they had bought earphones for the baby as music and chat so loud it would definitely effect the babies ears Rising Sun Staff please advise parents of that. But he was very a well behaved baby no trouble.

What a fantastic find, hands down it beats going into sidmouth itself. Absolutely great landlord and landlady, proper traditional pub, great selection of beers/ales etc, local clientele are so friendly and welcoming. More than fantastic value for money too!!!! The garden is great (especially in the sun), there’s a traditional skittle alley, pool table and darts. Superb meat raffle every Sunday, supplied by the local butcher’s. I don’t want to leave here, can’t wait to come back!!!!! Thank you

Big sign outside says freshly ground coffee. Ordered two coffees but shown a jar of instant coffee by the lady. I loathe instant coffee. Asked instead for a tomato juice and told that they don’t have tomato juice as nobody has asked for it recently. Do these people want customers? Why not stock a few bottles of tomato juice ? Why not remove the sign outside? Much as I want to support local businesses they need to make some sort of an effort. We left.

We used to go to the Rising Sun for the monthly quiz which, obviously but sadly, has been suspended until this current nuisance is beaten and the world returns to the old normal. It didn't stop us from going there on Monday last week and again last Thursday and our tables were suitably separated, being far enough apart to be safe but without our needing to shout. There was a plentiful supply of hand gel at the entrance and we had to give our contact details. We also had to wear a face covering when away from our tables so all necessary safety measures were in place. Unsurprisingly, the main menu is a little limited for the time being but there's a new small plate menu which offered over a dozen options and we took full advantage of the variety available. Excellent value for money doesn't begin to describe it! There's a good range of beers, ciders and wines to choose from, not to mention the huge number of spirits. It was a great shame that, unlike on quiz nights, there were not very many other people in the pub apart from the four of us on both nights as Andy and Nikki deserve all the support they can get at the moment, not that they don't anyway but it's all the more important in the present circumstances. Thanks again to them for making both our visits entirely enjoyable and memorable.

We were struggling to find a pub that offered food on a Sunday evening, and found this on the internet. We were not sure when we arrived, pub was virtually empty ( we had passed it a few times previously and it never seemed that busy). Pub was basic and old fashioned, and had atmosphere. Food was very good albeit fairly limited. I had an apple and cider cake for desert, homemade, and superb, very light and tasty without being overbearing. Helpful and friendly staff . Good local beers, albeit I was driving so only could have one. This is the sort of pub i say USE IT OR LOOSE IT !!. Note car park is down the road behind the Spar shop and is a council pay car park.

Good basic scran. Honest home cooking and a real good old fashioned welcoming local pub. I had the chicken and it was tender and delicious. I think we visited during the main chefs holiday so there may be a different menu when he's back in full cook. Dogs welcome in the pub but they like to keep the dining area dog clear so no problem there you can eat in the rest of the pub with your dog. Third time I have visited the The Rising Sun ( which is at Sidford NOT Sidmouth) taking my elderly mother out for Sunday lunch. The food and service are excellent. I can't understand why this place isnt booked out when other pubs nearby, that don't do such good food and cost a lot more, are. Maybe it is because there is no carpark? NOT an issue, there is a council carpark (free on a Sunday and cheep at other times) in spitting distance.

We walked down from or farmhouse B&B; for a nice, quiet evening and we got it. It really is a traditional local pub - no loud music, just a warm welcome, traditional wooden furniture, a pile of pub quiz books to pass the time, and wonderful food. I had the steak, and it was tender, tasty, with a delicious sauce. The pudding (sticky toffee) was gorgeous. Just for the evening, you felt as welcome as a local or a regular. It was unpretentious, not trying to be something it wasn't - this is a traditional English pub and the perfect place to spend a traditional English evening. Perfect.

The table was booked and a very good job that it was ! The pub was warm and cosy on a very cold bleak Sunday, as you entered it was lovely to see that the warmth was coming from a cosy log fire, in a very authentic fireplace, which was brimming with further supplies of chopped logs, a real treat. The Sunday roast, choice of two, pork or beef, smelled delicious, and it was difficult not to appear rude ogleing other diners plates. Our order arrived, beautifully served, we had chosen the pork, plenty of vegetables, the meat was tender, flavoursome and with a good portion of cracklings very crispy and tasty, apple sauce, rich gravy and a Yorkshire pud to top it off, a truly excellent meal. The deserts, followed, they were traditional tasty puddings etc all served with ice cream or double cream, perfect !! An excellent chef works here !!It was so good to have service at the table, unlike queuing for carverys, which can be tedious at the best of times !!There is limited space in this public house, and that's what gave the cosy atmosphere, booking must be a must !! We shall definitely return

Myself and 3 friends decided to support a relatively new locally owned business to celebrate our Christmas night out. The Rising Sun were advertising a Christmas party night with a meal and disco. The meal did not disappoint. I had prawn cocktail to start, served with thick, soft ,fresh granary bread. Followed by a traditional Turkey roast dinner, with unlimited portions of roast potatoes and a large variety of vegetables. I then finished off with probably the best profiteroles I have ever tasted. There were 6 large , fresh profiteroles covered with the most delicious warm caramel sauce, served with a shot of Baileys. Ridiculously rich and absolutely amazing. After all that food I did wonder how I could possibly dance when the disco started. Unfortunately I didn't have to worry as the disco was the only disappointing part of the evening. When " Build me up buttercup " was the best song of the evening you know something is lacking. Maybe a song from this century would have been a step in the right direction? However , in fairness, we didn't voice our opinion on the night and maybe the DJ was waiting for requests to steer him in the right direction????To summarise, lovely food and great service. A perfect place for a Christmas meal with friends.

Although we have owned a holiday home in Sidmouth for sometime its been a few years since we last visited The Rising Sun pub. Had cause to need a meeting room for an AGM for a local residents association so called in because I remembered they had a rear room which they hired out. I met with the new Landlady Lisa who sorted everything out including a buffet lunch for 35 people attending. Nothing was too much trouble. Great food and super friendly service. It was made better by the fact that I discovered that Christine the ex proprietor/chef from the Tudor Rose restaurant was doing the cooking on the day so no wonder the food was good. They created a good impression on those attending so I am sure some will return to give the food a try at night. We will.

Visited for Friday evening dinner for 4.In summary this is a first class traditional pub with excellent beer and a good atmosphere. The new landlords are trying to develop the restaurant side but their lack of experience is evident. The menu choices are fairly limited and simple but they are pushing "hot rock steaks" which is unusual in this area. Two of us had steaks and the two ladies other dishes. The food was basically good but the non steak dishes were served first followed by the raw steak on the "rock" at the same time as the hot vegetables and potatoes.Obviously the steaks take a little time to cook and by the time they were ready the ladies were almost finished and the vegetables cold.Overall an enjoyable evening but the proprietors could time the delivery of the food to the table better. We will go again and recommend the experience to others.

We've been calling in at The Rising Sun on and off over the years when we visit Sidmouth. Without doubt, the landlord and landlady, Chris and Ceri, have really turned this place around. It's a simple formula - clean pub, well kept beer and good food. Avoid the Sidmouth traffic, park in the car park behind the Spar in Sidford, have lunch at The Rising Sun and take a gentle walk down 'The Byes' into Sidmouth itself. Simple but effective.

My partner and I had a delightful time here one afternoon in September. We enjoyed the ambiance, the service, the beer, wine and food (particularly the fish and chips). We would have come away from here ready to write a strong recommendation, but our perception was spoiled by one silly little act by the owner. You have to pay cash here for purchases below (I think) £10. This is reasonable, given the processing fees charged to merchants by credit card companies. However, when we went to the bar for another glass of wine, only to discover we didn't have enough cash, we'd already spent almost three times this amount. The owner's refusal to sell us this last glass of wine on our credit card changed our whole perception of what had been to that point a very nice experience. We ate at many more pubs on this trip, but we never returned to the Rising Sun. At the end of the day, the owner lost far more revenue from us than the credit card costs she saved on that one glass of wine.

We are not fussy people, we love food and were pretty hungry but after a couple of mouthfuls both decided we would sooner go without. I was offered another salmon but declined I was then offered a Pudding?? We continue our walk but It did mar the rest of our walk - very surprised to read the other comments here as The Rising Sun was not a good place the day we frequented it.

Recently visited with two of my daughters at lunchtime. We had a short time to order and eat as one of my daughters was working nearby and only had an hour for lunch. We all had the fish and chips and what a brilliant choice! The fish was a good size, very fresh and covered with the lightest, crispiest beer batter; the chips were perfect and plentiful and it all came with a salad garnish, a small dish of tartare sauce and another of mushy peas. The service was quick and the landlady made us feel very welcome even though it was a flying visit. This was not my first visit. My husband and I always call when we are going to Sidmouth for the day. Why? Because we know the food is good, home-cooked and reasonably priced and we have never been disappointed. I know other members of our family and friends will also make it their choice if they are down that way as we have recommended it.

Found myself in a very rainy Sidford this Saturday lunch time and decided to give this pub a try, whilst my dog was getting her hair cut. From the outside it looked a bit the worse for wear and in need of a lick of paint. However, a very pleasant surprise awaited me inside....an open bar area with polished wooden floors, cute tables and decor including old photos of sidford. The menu was varied and the hot meals were all home made. I plumped for a cheese sandwich (choice of brown or white.) It arrived as a wonderful "door step!" packed full of tasty cheese and chutney with a small side salad. Very impressed. Reasonably priced and service was friendly and polite. Would definitely go again. Want to try their vegetarian dishes which are very different from the normal run of the mill options normally on offer. Particularly liked the sound of "spaghetti with asparagus, lemon and chive, in a creamy cheese sauce. "Heavenly can't wait!

Had a meal here on our recent visit to Sidford, this is a very friendly, no nonsense, village pub with a good menu and very good food. The young waitress who served us was a delight and very helpful, would not hesitate to recommend.

Waitress was rather indifferent but food was good and served quickly. The menu was varied with a good choice. My partner recommends the Steak and Ale Pie.

My family and I went to the Rising Sun on Sunday evening. We ordered vegetable lasagnes, beef lasagne, ham egg and chips and garlic bread. We waited nearly one hour for the food and when it did arrive the portions were very small and the chips were cold!I asked for hot chips which we had 2 bowls brought out to us just as we were finishing our meal! When we went to pay, we did say that we were very disappointed with the meal but nothing was done but they would pass the comments on to the chef! They were extremely busy as it was Bank Holiday weekend but even so, hot chips and bigger portions would be good!

Came here with my family for lunch; we had the two course menu for £8.50 of a main and a sweet. We all selected fish and chips and the food was well cooked and presented but we could have done with some more chips on the plate. The dessert was a choice of two good old English dishes and was OK. Service was good, the choice of beers on offer was great. Will I go back there? Yes!!!

"One of the nicer places we've dined at for a while- location is a bit out of the way but each of the dishes was full of flavour, and for the standard was good value for money"

Great venue for lunch, always busy, good food at reasonable prices. Until today, prices have risen, the place was half empty, the food still good but not exceptional so why the price hike? My breaded plaice with chips, peas and tartare sauce was £16.99! It was nice enough, not outstanding and available elsewhere in Sidmouth for a lot less. If they want more profit and less customers I think this approach will work, we will think twice before returning as there are many other places to eat locally that offer better value for similar food.
