Still best in town for fish & chips

After a long shift in one our hospitals, I orderered a kids meal, a place, a seabass, 2 x chips etc... At no point was I asked if I wanted salt and vinegar (other customers were asked), the place was dry, somechips (not all tough) seemed to have been in the heat much making them a chewy ... And at the end not even a thank you from them. Having worked in service/commerce and hospitality for more than three decades, it is a 6 1/2 on 10 for them. Hopefully, they shall do better as good service/quality must be present at all times, in one usiness.

the food is ok for the price i guess. but we’ve been here before and now this will be the last time. the chips are absolutely swimming in grease, can u not drain them off?? the chicken breast is really dry and plain and there was a hair on it. the battered sausages were barely battered and they were just cheap frozen ones. despite this, the chicken chunks were lovely.

Very disappointed, ordered fish and chips, the fish batter was dense and dry and the fish dry and over cooked, the chips were nice though.

Fish was absolutely terrible 😫 12pound of batter and no fish , plus burnt ,this chippie was brilliant once but no more since the old managers left

Never had much of an opinion when first used the Chippee! But over the years it has grown on me alot. The fish is well cooked, creamy and not dry. The chips are soft and fluffy inside, yet crisp on the outside. Actual mushy peas not marrowfat The staff are so welcoming and accommodating. Ensuring you get the correct food and portion size. They even had deep fried Creme Eggs at Easter......no I wasn't that brave lol. Great place please support them!!

Really lovely fish and chips and thought it was quite reasonable compared to fish and chips at home (Oxfordshire). Will return if in area again.

Called in on the way to Cornwall Thursday evening, excellent fish chips,wife had kiddies fish ball, chips. Really nice freshly cooked, friendly staff, good value,thank you.

Just bought cod and chips as I couldn't be bothered to cook. Worst decision I've ever made. The cod was drier than Gandhi's flip flop. Literally, zero white flesh , batter so hard even my staffie struggled to chew it, chips were also dry and hard as nails. Almost £10 spent and it was the worst £10 spent ever. I reckon everything had been in the warmer for days. Avoid like the plague. They should get some learns from Bloaters in Sidmouth. This is the worst fish and chips I've ever had in 50 years. I'll never ever go again. Avoid, avoid, avoid 😡😡😡😡

Live in Axminster but decided to stop in after visiting family...such fast service! Food was ready before I had chance to put my purse away...im usually waiting 30mins plus at my local... really tasty chips and fair prices.. 4 happy full tummy's

Worst chips I've ever eaten. Tasted like they had been reheated. Rock hard & stale tasting. How can you get something so simple so wrong. Come on! You've got serious competition up the road.

I always visit the Honiton Chippee (opposite the police station) Good fish and chips, very clean tidy, and organised. It's just a shame they pay more attention to their online orders i.e. paper bags on the counter, than they do in greeting walk in customers with eye contact and immediately care for the customer in front of them.

I had been recommended this establishment and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Ordered the Haddock and chips. A few mins wait as it was cooked fresh. The batter was crisp, and the fish was nice and flaky. Bit like me really. Best chips I’ve had for a long time, well cooked with an oily richness. The woman who served me even brought it outside when ready, where I was waiting passing the time of day with my friend. Too service and well priced meal.

Lovely fish & chips. The batter on the fish was slightly too thick, which meant there was a little uncooked, but this was a tiny flaw in an otherwise fantastic meal.

Great bunch working here and really good food. Good prices also. The Lego in the windows is a great touch and talking point.

The fishcake had lots of flavour, and chips were nice and freshly cooked. But the mushy peas were too runny. I'd eat here again, though. There were some cool Lego models of the Titanic and cars in the windows.

Arrogant attitude, your in a service industry might be better is you put someone on the front counter who smiled. Good food, but expensive.

Very bitty and overcooked chips, this has happened twice now. And more expensive than ever. Last time we had fish and that was small and over cooked also.. Will not be going there again. 😠

Previously a full 5 star review, my favourite chip shop and I feel like I have been swindled as a regular chips and large chips arent the size they use to be and the prices have gone up.

Ordered some food before it came cold so they refunded us .. ordered a few weeks later was fine. Ordered tonight and given us a tiny batch chips also found hair in our food.

Service with bad attitude. On holiday so not from around here, thought we’d treat ourselves to mini fish and chips x3 weren’t told everything is sold separately and the prices are way higher than Birmingham… not worth £35 especially with the rude service

After spending over 20 years going here, it’s with a sad heart that I write this review, not sure if it’s new owners or the old ones that just don’t care anymore, I’ve always had good food, Unfortunately this year the food has been awful. We had a hard sausage, said about it, but they brushed it off. Went back again a couple of weeks later, had a large order, Fish cake was flat, sausage in batter had very little batter. Went again this evening and was told we should have brought it back! We live 20 minutes away. Sadly we won’t be going back again.

Ordered for 7 people, didn't take long to prepare our order. All lovely and hot. Large portions. Would recommend.

We pre ordered online whilst out and picked up our food without waiting in the shop brilliant, and the chips are absolutely brilliant. You also get sachets of salt and vinegar really good and great value.

Food was good, fair price, but unfortunately they mucked up the order, no real apology, they just said he was new to the job.....

Last day of holiday and fancied chips so took a punt as other food places in Honiton have been disappointing but this place does awesome chips, we're back in November and will definitely visit here again...... Yummy 😋

Food was nice, but it should be for the prices being charged. Eye-wateringly expensive, even in today’s climate. £2.90 for a standard bag of chips (!). Nearly £7 for cod. We ordered roe because it was cheaper, and because we thought it would be quicker to cook. Unfortunately, we were still waiting over 10 minutes for our order with no indication why it was taking so long. We could have cooked it quicker ourselves!

Terrible food, chips were old and some tasted rotten. Fish was tiny and off smelling. Half the order missing. Avoid.

Had cod and chips , curry sauce. Very good value for money, portion size more than enough. Chips we're really crispy even after putting curry sauce on. Liked the way the Chips we're served in trays. Flavour of the curry sauce was just right ,not to salty and a slight sweetness. Could drink it by the bucket load. Fish was fresh and flacky and batter was so crispy. All the food we ordered was piping hot. Service was friendly and fast. Think the food could win awards it was that good. I am just here on a visit , but if I lived here it would be my weekly treat with out fail.

The fish was very fresh with very crispy cake .. Delicious chips thickly sliced ... All very hot and wrapped in paper which adds to the charm. The only downside is too little vinegar and lack of detectable amounts of salt.. Recommended!

I came to Chippee last night to get a portion of chips on the route home. I walked in, it was quiet. I stated that i'd like a small portion of chips, the man behind the counter told me that he was in the middle of prepping an order so i would have to wait. There were 3 members of staff behind the counter, Two who weren't doing anything. He then told the gentleman he was serving that his curry sauce would be a couple of minutes. I assumed my order would now be taken and prepped as it was just a portion of chips i was after. but he just stood there waiting for the other two members of staff to prepare a curry sauce. i walked out and went to the Chinese next door. terrible service.

Haven’t been to this chip shop in years but always used to love it. However I was really disappointed. A lot of the chips where blue/black. The chicken nuggets were cooked from frozen. My whole order got passed to me in little individual bags, I had to ask for a bigger bag and pack it myself despite there being a queue behind me. Don’t recommend

This used to be a good fish and chip shop, used to be consistently too. I have been her a 3 times in last few weeks, and have progressively got worse. Just thought we would give it one last go tonight on way home. Tiny scratching like over cooked chips, fish, I think it once was a fish, less meat than a birds eye fish finger, more like fish jerky. Sorry wont be back for a while.

Food from here is always good, freshly cooked and delicious. Really good too to see all staff tonight wearing masks to protect customers. Sadly the same cannot be said for the customers, who clearly don't care whose health they put at risk. It's a shame businesses don't seem to realise they can require masks to be worn and lawfully refuse entry/service to those who don't. The stuff govt doesn't tell people... Thanks for the excellent food tonight and for doing your bit to keep people safe!

Got home late and was starving so thought I would treat myself to some fish and chips for the first time in months. Called into the Chippee, which seems to have lots of great reviews - sadly mine isn't one of them. Maybe it was late in service, or I was just unlucky, but even so, I've just been served the smallest, meanest, most embarrassing excuse for a piece of fish that I've ever seen. a few millimetres thick and more batter than fish. More like a couple of fish fingers wrapped in batter than an adult portion of fish. The only saving grace was that there were plenty of chips. So much for my chippy treat!

The fish and chip shop is not as good as used to be. The fish and chips were very poor quality. Chips tasted as though were warmed up from previous evening They also not allowing in the seating area as they used to, and no longer serve hot drinks.

Don’t bother ! We looked on google whilst on route to Salcombe, hungry and tired of sitting in traffic. This place came up an you could order online great I thought. We only order one large fish and chips for £15 ! We arrived 20 minutes earlier than the time we booked. I thought we’ll just have to wait if there super busy . WHAT A JOKE ! I went in they told me my order wasn’t ready and I simply asked if it could be brought Forward. 7 people went in to order one at a time due to Covid all ordering more than our 1 large fish and chips. Every single person was served before me and I was made to wait for my time slot even when they weren’t even that busy . I wouldn’t write a bad review but annoying I waited for a very small “large fish and chips” no salt and vinegar and not that nice.

We ordered online 5 x cod and chips and our order was ready at the time booked. Every one enjoyed the food, couldn't be better.

Ordered Burger and chips. Although the burger was decent, I was surprised to find that you will be charged extra if you want sauce on it. Chips were a very mixed bag, some were fried well but others were hard and chewy with a general taste of slightly old oil. They may be double fried, but the method may need a little tweak. Has the potential to be good but not quite there yet.

Gone downhill dramatically to the point of being inedible, raw, soggy chips. Don't waste your money. Shame as they used to be great as well

iv just brought a £16 pound meal and the cod is tiny and it was mildly warm very unsatisfied

Had 2 portions of cod & chips. When opening wrapping fish was broken up and the undercooked batter stuck to the chips. Chips were dry and hard not crispy with fluffy inside as freshly cooked chips should be.

Worst I’ve had in a long time. The good part - the chips the fish was small chewy and the batter was pale looking and tasted awful. Just like it had been cooked twice. The sausage likewise chewy with no taste. Again it tasted like it was reheated from earlier. There is obviously no pride in what they serve to their customers. I shall not be using them again.

Shame we have used for many years and one member of staff has been consistently offish. Have ignored her attitude until now but having been forgotten about waiting outside for my order enough is enough. Not ever coming back. Your prices are getting extortionate now anyway. Nothing wrong with the food but attitude is everything.

Just had a delicious cod and plaice with chips from Chippees Phoned through order efficient friendly staff and my elderly parents and I had a real treat of a tea When you are hungry nothing like fish and chips
