Village Cafe in Plymouth

Ordered this for delivery at 11am, arrived at 12.30pm - food was luckily still somewhat hot, but unfortunately we ended up throwing it all in the bin. Your milkshakes are not authentic oreo, your chips are very undercooked and unfortunately the nuggets were too salty. Tried to get a refund through Uber Eats but apparently wasn't eligible 😂

Wanted to give The Village a go despite the bad reviews because I couldn't imagine a fish and chip shop repeating the same mistakes over the course of several years, usually they'll listen to feedback and do something about it and so some of the best fish and chips I've had have been from places that used to be bad. Unfortunately, it was bad. The chips were undercooked and greasy, and they forgot the Jumbo Sausage from the order. I've tried to ring them up to let them know but haven't been able to get through. The positives are the potion sizes are decent, the shop itself is really nice and the pricing is reasonable. If the chips had been cooked better, and my order was correct, then I'd have given this place a 5* review

Waited over an hour .... told busy .. yet 4.99 for delivery... still waiting 1 hour 20 mins

Disappointed chips cold got given mushy peas instead of curry sauce and cake was stale.

My son loves the spicy spuds from this place but unfortunately on a number of occasions recently the spuds have been inedible. We going after we pick him up from school I think we are being served the ones left over from lunch they are I the hot cabinet from a good few hours where the become dehydrated and dry. When you get fresh potatoes from here they are lovely. Surly there is a set time food can be kept in a hot cabin

Waiting two hours for food to be delivered, oder at 5.10 got delivery at 7.20. try phoning but line busy for hours. then delivery turn up to find chips were still raw and fish wasn't to bad cheese and chips not cook and wasnt even hot. Mushy peas and curry sauce cold. So won't be ordering again

Fish and chips were both overcooked.

Fish was crispy and large and so tasty. Chips also crispy. Best I ever had in very long time. No sure if it's changed hands from last visit as it was not much good but this time wonderful

Just stopped for a quick bite and I have to say that is one of the worst scrambled eggs and bacon I’ve ever had…my kids have done better…the whole plate wuz swimming in juice (I mean swimming) so much so I had to ask for a napkin to pour the excess juice/rubbish on to..the server/cook/waiter took the napkin but left all juice on the table for me to navigate around whilst trying to finish..had to take toast off small plate and un juice AGAIN 2nd time…staff no interested or bothered about the meal…poor poor service …shame used to take the mrs&kids up there but never again…waste of monies guys

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. We were so hungry but thoroughly enjoyed every bite, including our 4 legged furry babies. Highly recommended 👌

These were the worst chips I have ever eaten they must have dipped them in the oil for 30 secs they are raw pale and under cooked...might as well thrown £20 away

Tried this chip shop for the first time over a year ago and loved it so ordered again. Very quickly learned that delivery from The Village is SLOW. On five different occasions we have waited for 2 hours for our food, which is just ridiculous. When it has been delivered in less than two hours, we are talking delivery in an hour and a half, certainly no less than an hour 15. Burgers are good, my partner rates the Tower Burger and I have the Cajun halloumi burger as a vegetarian, it's okay if the breadcrumbs don't arrive soggy. Normally, the chips arrive raw. We have photo evidence and messages to show our previous complaints with the restaurant, all of which have been ignored which is why I'm leaving a public review this time. We have offered them the benefit of the doubt and ordered from them again but it was the last time. Fed up of ridiculously late deliveries, raw food, and no acknowledgement at all from the restaurant.

Put some colour on ya chips. My chips look like they need a holiday in the sun or a prescription for iron. Aldenti is for pasta not chips.

Poor under cooked chips and charged for large cod but it was small and under cooked will not be returning

Over 2 hours waiting for delivery. Called up to be told they haven’t even got a driver ready and didn’t bother calling to let us know. Food had been sat in the oven the whole time didn’t offer to re make any of it. Had to go collect in the end. Appalling

Without doubt the worst fish and chips I’ve ever eaten. The chips were ok but just cooked no crispness at all. The fish was covered by something representing beige skin (with the same consistency), not crispy, just soggy and gross. The ‘regular’ fish was also appalling small! Never again, avoid like the plague!

Appalling Travelled a fair distance to get food couldn’t even be bothered to wrap it in paper, didn’t offer a bag for 5 items wouldn’t of minded paying for the bag if I was given the option when ordering will not return

The fish was tasty, but the batter was absolutely disgusting. A 5 year old could have done better. Only ate fish batter wasted.

OMG! Just had the best chippy ever! Delivery was super fast. Lovely lady too who dropped them off. We had the footlong sausage ...Wow! Sometimes the sausage can be anemic or the batter really dry, but this is the best we've had...just perfect! Spicy spuds full of flavour and melt in your mouth. The curry sauce is something else, I would happily just order a flask of that. One happy family here, thank you crownhill village chippy 10/10

Very disappointed with the food received at The Village tonight, I ordered 2 regular Fish and Chips, 1 with light batter. When my order was called I asked the young lady if she could make a note on the paper which was lightly battered fish. She looked at the guy who was cooking as if this hadn’t been done. He pointed to the piece in the cabinet which she wrapped for me. When we got home my husbands Fish had been covered with the chips so the batter had gone all soggy!! On cutting into what I thought was a weird shaped piece of Fish I actually found that I had a sausage!! The chips were awful I don’t know what they cook them in but they really do not taste good, very bland. I also had a curry sauce which was the worst I ever had!!! Sorry The Village I won’t be returning anytime soon.

Great selection of delicious food! All day breakfast is amazing! We’ve also had fish and chips from here in the past and they were exceptional… A bit of wait but well worth it! Will definitely be going again.,,

Excellent cafe in the heart of Crownhill village. The only drawback is that Livewell Southwest staff frequently use the village's local amenities during lunch.

As a chippy I would of thought the cooking of chips should be a standard,but no they were raw and pale . The fish batter was burnt and soggy mushy peas dry and to top it off way too expensive. Won't be using these again 😡😡😡

Utterly disappointing... We ordered large fish and chips, curry sauce and mushy peas. To start the with the staff seemed quite happy and welcoming. We were the only customers so it was quiet apart from what I assume was a member of staff who appeared half way through our meal and started to play games on his phone with the volume quite loud. The fish was tiny, certainly no where near what I would class as a large piece or worth the money we paid. Plenty of chips and the smaller ones that were acutually cooked were loverly, just a shame there were hard, uncooked ones in amongst them. There curry sauce and mushy peas were loverly so no complaints there. All in all we wont be heading back.

Fish was nice...chips not so much...be aware that if you eat in, you are charged around £3 without being told. Will maybe have fish again as a takeout

Visited here as my local chippy has closed. The food was OK but expensive, nearly twice as much as my old chippy. I ordered online and had to pay 10p for a bag I did not require as I always have my own bag. There was also a 50p service charge, making this even more expensive. Will probably only visit again if I run out of alternative options

We picked up an order of fish n chips from here past week. The fish was good but the chips were incredibly pale, quite a few of them were also raw and crunchy in the middle. Which was a disgusting experience. Will not be revisiting.

What a surprise didn't know what we wanted but a hot chocolate and al large bap with freshly cooked Turkey and cranberry with chips

Fryer had no clue on what was available, was such a disappointment chips were under cooked just looked like it was all thrown together. Will not be returning

Undercooked chips which were hard, burnt scampi and fishcake, all cooked by someone who clearly was not happy in their work and to top it all had to wait a long time (even though it wasn’t very busy). Will not return.

Lots of food to choose from. Main meals curry, fish, southern fried chicken, sausage, Burgers, chilli con carne. Breakfast, Indoor seating. Large carpark at back of cafe Toilets. Lovely food. Great service..

First time here for years. I wasn't dissapointed the staff are nice and the food was lovely. Nice and clean.

Chips were too soggy as undercooked. The man on shift was extremely grumpy (looked understaffed so he was cooking and serving). I ate in but the place was grubby. Not a welcoming atmosphere at all. Will not be going back.

Not the best. We tried this for a change but that was a mistake and we won't be ordering from here again. The loaded chips weren't loaded properly, the chips were undercooked, and says comes with sauce but it didn't. Anything battered was super greasy, it wasn't nice. I couldn't eat it all. One of the guys working there is super miserable too so wasn't very welcoming. Price for it all isn't worth it.

Possibly the best fish & chips in the town!!!

Highly recommend. Great food, love the onion rings, crispy batter. Amazing menu with great choice. The chicken burger I had with hash brown and onion rings was one of the best burgers I've had. Chips are lovely and done just the way I like them! Always friendly staff. Good location and easy to get to. Plenty of parking nearby.

Truly awful place, shoddy service, feral kids running around the place who also made a right mess in the toilet, but they were related to the staff, so they just smiled when I informed them. Place now reported to health and hygiene

Great place. Polite staff and always upbeat whenever I go there. Good sized portions. We use them a lot for take outs, they cook everything to our liking. Not many good chippys around, so it's good that we have one nearby.

A hot drink on a cool day is just what you need, and this place achieved the aim. It was spoilt by the feral children that were in there and the terrible state they left the toilet in, such a shame they were related to the people working in there on the day I visited.

Man serving was miserable and rude. So would I be if I had to look at the anaemic, tasteless and greasy chips! Somehow both undercooked and oil logged

I've not sat in this place but it's my new go to for fish and chips. I've been here about 5 times now and every single time I've had a great experience. The staff are really friendly, the food is always good and the prices are reasonable. Highly recommended.

Have got takeaway from here a few times now. We usually get battered sausage and chips. I wonder if some of the negative reviews are from people who have had theirs delivered. As we always collect the food is always hot and fresh and the portions are generous. The shop is clean and service is quick. The only issue we had was with a pukka pie the first time we ordered where the pastry wasn't fully cooked in one part.

Food good. Service fairly bearing in mind they were not busy when we went there. Sadly cutlery was returned twice as it had dried food stuck to it. That unfortunately set the tone of the visit.

Apart from the fact the guy behind the till seemed very miserable, the chips were truly awful. The gross tasting oil they’re cooked in totally took over, like they’d been cooked in the dirtiest reused chemical oil. Such a shame because they have a good position in the area but my god I won’t be ever trying it out again.

Updated 7th July 2023 - prices appear to have gone up 15%, Cod and Chips was £7.75 now £9.49. This has applied to the whole menu! Recently improved shop. New menu, happy with the quality and range of meal deal offers.

Must be the worst ever place to get food the chips were soggy and disgusting!! The fish was horrible even my dog chucked it up the rest went in the bin £19.05 I should have just put the money in the bin £1.45 for mushy peas that had seen better days order 58 trainee wanted to sell me a bag yet two people in front of me were given a bag for free !!! Chips undercooked, cold and anemic. When tipped out of the tray, they form a single, damp clump. Chips then fall apart as you try to separate them. Used to be worth the price but quality seriously gone downhill. 50% of food went in the bin as just awful

Ordered a chippy tea tonight as a half term treat using Uber Eats. I wish I had done a Google search before hand! Took well over an hour to arrive, and we were underwhelmed to say the least! Regular battered cod and chips? Undercooked chips, very anaemic looking and drenched in grease. Specified with salt and vinegar, came plain! Why offer it as an option if it’s just to be ignored? Cod had crispy batter on the outside, but the fish was slimy and soggy and didn’t taste nice at all so after 2 bites it was chucked in the bin! Kids chips weren’t much better and also quite greasy! Won’t be retuning.

We went there on a Sunday when Codmothers, our usual chippy, was closed. Expensive takeaway by comparison but tasty and hot. We won't be switching but it's a decent backup place. I plan to go back to try the smoothies one day. Really interesting eat in menu to try.

Chips were anaemic and soggy and the large cod wasn't nearly as large as the bloke behind the counter who was having a go at the girls working in there for no apparent reason. Wasn't much better the last time I went a few months ago. My other half didn't even get through half of it until it went in the bin. Won't go again.

Took 2 hours 40 for our food to arrive. Each time we phoned for an update it was "it's on its way now". The food was marked as delivered on Just Eat after an hour when it wasn't. Why? I understand it was a very busy night but a nearly 3 hour wait for a 2 person order with false time estimates is not okay. If they were honest about their timeframe we would have just cancelled.

I don't visit here very often and sadly on this occasion my takeaway order was incorrect and I had to phone, return and collect again!

I usually have the fish n chips which have always been absolutely lovely but I decided to try something different, I ordered the southern fried chicken, to be honest I wish that I hadn't. Both my son n I agree that they were really dreadful. He could only eat half of his portion of 10 as they were incredibly salty, extremely hard n didn't taste nice at all. The remaining chicken was given to our dog who did eat them but even he wasn't very enthusiastic. I'm really sorry but we won't be ordering the southern fried chicken again...a complete waste of money.

Ordered a cappuccino to drink in, waited ages for my drink. I had to ask for my drink to go. The assistant only then made my drink which was watery and weak. This was last week, I will not go here again

We ordered through just eat, checked out as a guest instead of logging in so couldn't leave a review on there. We ordered large cheesy chips and large spicy spuds, both with salt and vinegar with our fish. We both ended up with large plain anaemic undercooked chips with no salt and vinegar. We're only out of pocket £1.30 which i can live with, but being currently ill and after a long week at work we decided to order something in as a treat. I did not expect to have to re-cook my dinner in the air fryer on top of not getting what i ordered. Bemuses me why businesses would send out bad orders and make people regret giving them their money, especially in this economic climate when they should be wanting to keep as many customers as possible!

Absolutely shocking! Ordered on uber eats took almost 2 hours for delivery! Chips were more like mash, couldnt even pick them up! Chocolate bar milkshakes 😂😂 almost £5 each….and it just tastes like watered down milk! Do not waste your money!!

One Worst fish and chips I've had .large fish and chips the fish small just cooked soggy bater still wet on the inside and the chips soft white had to put them in the air fryer to cooke them Disappointed

Food was great roughly 6 months ago. Since then, always had food cold. Burgers are not overly nice anymore. And whenever I have chips they come cold and soggy.

Excellent food at a great prices and service :-) very large selection of food on offer with helpful staff. You can also get deliveries via Just eat app if you require it. Great fish'n'chips here

Customer service shocking. Shop almost empty. They had to cook fish which was fine but with only one other customer the wait was huge. Young girl and mature lady just talking non stop and no care taken with order. Batter not good. Very rude

I went to the takeaway and i ordered a regular portion of chips for my tea i brought them back when I got back I found that the chips where inedible and they where falling apart I asked for chips not mashed potato that's all the chips where good for. I'm never ever going to this shop again. I would not pay £2.65 to eat a portion of chips here again. If that's what they call chips I'd hate to think what the rest if the menu is like don't waste your money on rubbish like this

Disgusting reaction from ‘chef’ when ordering a burger at 20:08 when they close at 21:00. Not even tried the food at this point. Very unprofessional. People wonder why these ‘smaller’ establishments go out of business.

Seriously shocking undercooked chips and watery gravy, cheese was sour tasted gone off very unhappy

Ordered at 5.30 to collect at 6.20. Arrived at 6.15 when they said it was ready. Didn’t receive my food until 6.45. Fish was small not regular and chips under cooked. 3 members of staff were just stood around doing nothing, no urgency. One was scratching scratch cards whilst I was waiting. Won’t be returning
