Viet Quan - Vietnamese Street Food in Portsmouth

This is now my 9th visit and its all lovely and looking forward to my next visit

Fabulous little unassuming restaurant that punches above its weight, as evidenced by its growing popularity. Great menu that's not overrun with oriental dishes but nevertheless has plenty to appeal to any lover of the tastes of the orient. Staff are very knowledgeable and friendly, and the whole package was as wonderful to experience as it was unexpected. Love it.

I got recommended from someone long time ago and we went there for birthday lunch. Foods and drinks are absolutely amazing. Remind me when I was in Vietnam. It's really authentic home-cooked,fresh ingredients,big portions. The lady who owns restaurant was lovely and smily. We would highly recommend anyone to come here instead of going to a big chain restaurant. When we pay the bill there is no service charge on top of it so we are more than happy to add more tips for our waitress. We will definitely keep going back again

I’ve only been here twice and it’s become my favourite restaurant in Portsmouth, incredible food paired with friendly service. Great Vegan and Vegetarian Options 🌱

Terrible service, didn’t even get served a drink after waiting 15 minutes, multiple people served that came in after us, young girl didn’t seem to care. Gave the menus back and left, would strongly avoid.

Edit 2025, will leave my original 5 stars but visiting again in Jan 2025 the pho was just above average, those deep flavours weren't there at all, shame. This place is amazing, I enjoyed the takeout so much we came back for dinner also. Crab spring rolls were amazing, you could taste every ingredient. Pho was 10/10, great subtle star aniseed coming through and a rich broth... Could've been spicier but hey that's what the condiments are for.

Turned up around 18:30 on a Thursday evening in January (lone business traveller). The place was 1/3 full already. The service was excellent. Fast and friendly. I had 2 beers & and a single meal, and the bill was around £24. Beer choice was 3 Vietnam beers, Tiger, Saigon and Hanoi. Not had the latter two before so I tried one of each. I recommend the Saigon! (As did my waitress). Had Chilli beef with lemongrass, which was perfect. Great quality and good price. Left an hour later, and the restaurant was full. Recommend booking if going later than me! Will definitely go again next time I'm in Portsmouth. Thanks!!!

Love this place, very cosy and staff are really great. The food is superb, well worth a visit and the Saigon Rice dish is amazing if you like pork.

Intimate family run restaurant with good food.

Excellent food. Had a wonderful time at Viet Quan from the moment we entered to the moment we left. I’d like to leave a special thanks to our waitress Kim who was very helpful throughout and made sure we were looked after the whole time. Would go back again. 👍

We were staying at the Holiday Inn and fancies some food mid afternoon, we’d forgone lunch! We called and asked if we could bring our dog in and they said no problem. I’m glad we came, authentic Vietnamese food! We had summer rolls, pork skewers, beef Pho and spicy noodle soup! It was amazing! Lovely staff and we’ll be back! I really should move to Southsea for this reason!

Great Vietnamese food around this area. Definitely will come again. Soup base is full of beef flavour.

Absolutely wonderful food and service. The beef pho was fragrant and warming with a great amount of the tender, delicious meat. The bahn mi was fresh and delicious too. Everything was great value. Service was fantastic, very attentive and friendly. Such a lovely restaurant which I'd absolutely return to!

Food was great and arrived quickly. Nice flavours at a decent price. Would recommend the pork belly and mango salad.

Went there with excitement and high expectations after reading the reviews on Google, immediately disappointed after seeing the food. Ordered two Beef Pho and a Summer Roll, the two summer rolls are not cut at all, just a whole spring roll with rice paper (too chewy and sticky as well). The filling of the Summer Roll was disappointing, too much vegetable and herbs to make it look filled but the taste is not balanced at all. When it comes to the Beef pho, even more disappointment… the soup base is very much like a basic beef noodle soup rather than a Pho soup base; for the noodles they used a thicker noodles (which i assume is a type of noodles often use in Thai dish) anyway it’s just not “pho like”. The beef of the pho is way too chewy and badly cut, they are too thick and too overcooked. Overall, the whole meal is pretty disappointing.

Went there with a reservation. Making the reservation over the phone was easy, and the staff were very communicative. The atmosphere and vibe of the restaurant were great, with amazing music. The service was excellent and very helpful, gave us plenty of time to look through the menu without feeling rushed. We ordered the vegetarian and pork spring rolls as starters, both delicious. Our server kindly advised us to eat the spring rolls with the lettuce, which made them even better. As mains we got the fried noodles, one with beef and one with shrimp. The portion size of the noodles was enough and worth its money. The cocktails we tried (margarita and mojito) were also pretty good. Would highly recommend, one of the best asian restaurants in Southsea.

Just the freshest, most amazingly tasty food and now they are refurbished to a great standard and do zingy cocktails too!!

Followed link to website on here to order takeaway food to collect. It takes you to their website, where it says "for takeaway, order on uber eats" and a link. I clicked on the link and ordered the food - only to realise after paying that the link takes you to Viet Quan in London! I went to the Southsea restaurant and apologised, explaining the situation. They would not warrant the payment nor contact the London restaurant to cancel the order. Extremely disappointing and a total waste of money.

Lovely little Vietnamese place. Big choice of food. Really delicious and good value. Friendly staff. Highly recommend and will definitely be going back when I'm next in the area!

When you enter the store, you feel very comfortable and at ease. The staff is enthusiastic and kind, and the food is of a high standard. The soup base of the beef noodle soup is on the lighter side. If you don’t like something too strong, it will be suitable.

Myself and some friends went here for dinner. I have to say the food was delicious and the meat was so tender. It was a lovely atmosphere for a small restaurant, not too loud. I would definitely return.

We took the braised beef with rice, and prawn vemicellin, both tasted good, and their quantity were large enough. The waiter offered good service and gave us a baguette for tasting. Vietnamese coffee was interesting but too sweet in any standard.

We try to find phó wherever we go. We've had it in Europe and all over N. America. This was our 1st time in the UK and it was amazing! We started out with the cold rolls which were appropriately stuffed with shrimps and fresh veggies. My wife had the bun noodles and I had what appeared to be phoʻ tai nam. Both dishes were correctly presented with your choice of chopstick or K&F. The phoʻ had the chilis, bean sprouts and mint sprigs on the side. The texture and flavour were excellent. If anything the star anise was a little dominant but not excessively so. My wife's bun was chock full of grilled sweet pork and noodles. The price was not out of line for similar meals and well worth it. The service was attentive but not cloying.

Authentic Vietnamese food, beautifuly cooked with fresh ingredients. Relaxed atmosphere, Saigon beer imported from Vietnam, just off the beaten track. Very impressed.

Tasty and varied options, the pan fried noodles were very flavourful and the service is perfect. Vegan and vegetarian options clearly labelled as well!

Easily my favourite restaurant in Portsmouth. The food is just incredible, I have always received wonderful service when I have visited and the restaurant has a lovely, intimate feel. I highly recommend the pho, of course, but also the pork vermicelli and the summer rolls

Really top quality Vietnamese food… we thoroughly enjoyed every dish we ordered. Especially the beef mince in chilli and lemongrass dish, the mango salad, the shaking beef and the chicken satay. Mouth still tingling as I walk home! Would totally recommend

Delicious Bahn Mi. I had the pork belly and my son had honey chicken. He said it was the best sandwich he had ever had.

Best Vietnamese food I’ve had since leaving Saigon. Quite pricey but it does give you a nice reminder of Vietnam. I will definitely return! Ngon lắm.

Had lunch here today and it was brilliant, great staff and very authentic food, absolutely perfect!

We went for a birthday dinner and the food was divine. I went for the beef chilli lemongrass, such generous portions I can’t wait to visit again! The staff was so friendly and accommodating and ensured that we all had a lovely time. Definitely recommend for groups or date night, you will be well taken care of :)

Broth and the mango salad were sooo good. I particularly liked how they took time to chop the nuts small so they ran through the whole salad instead of sprinkling a few chunks on top like most places. Beef was so, so tender and really tasty dumplings. Generous portions. Delicious, fresh, and healthy food. Will definitely come back to try other dishes. Thanks x

Viet food in a very casual and friendly environment. Pho is always my favorite Viet food. I think it’s good in UK standard. Viet coffee is a bit disappointed comparing the Viet coffee that I used to have. Overall is still good.

A delicious dinner spot if you’re looking for authentic Vietnamese food. The summer rolls and pork belly vermicelli were absolutely delicious.

Had a short trip to Portsmouth. Viet Quan is a must-try restaurant. Authentic and delicious thai food.

What can I say other than just perfect. We come to Portsmouth often and this is the first time we have found a restaurant of this quality. First of all, the boss knows how to listen to what you want and advise you accordingly. Everything is of a cleanliness that is unfortunately too rare in many places. The menu is varied and the dishes all have a lot of flavor. We ate two main course starters and bottled water for €60

Super friendly staff, lovely food and atmosphere and cheap too!

My husband and I like Vietnamese food and loved this cheerful, family-run place. Summer rolls were deliciously fresh, the salt and pepper squid right on the money. I had a super Margarita, with a sprinkling of fiery chilli joining with salt around the rim of the glass. All reasonably priced as well!

Really delicious food, fairly priced, great service and ambience. Love this place, will definitely keep coming back until we’ve tried everything on the menu. Service was great, went there on a Tuesday night for dinner before a show at the kings theatre. I was worried about time but we were able to sit, order, and eat in less than 40 minutes! Drove an 80 min round trip to get here and it was well worth the trip. I was lucky to live previously near to some great vietnamese restaurants but now I am too far away so haven't had vietnamese in several years. This restaurant didn't disappoint. We had take away. The team were incredibly warm and welcoming. I didn't have to wait long. And the drive was well worth it. My partner adored the food and he's now a convert to vietnamese. It's the first time he's eaten out and not grumbled! Instead he was delighted with his roasted pork belly and rice. The summer rolls were crunchy and the sauce delicious. We tried the Bao Bun as a started and this too was tasty. And my pork and noodle salad was excellent. We'll definitely be back to try different items on the menu. Thank you!

An absolutely delicious meal, everything we had was amazing and in particular the garlic prawn chow chow, what an introduction to this vegetable, honestly, you have to try it. All the staff were super helpful and friendly and a lovely atmosphere too. Cannot recommend highly enough. If we are ever in Portsmouth again we will definitely be visiting again for dinner! Good ambiance. Reasonably Priced. Huge portion servings, not expecting their Pho to be that large. Food tastes authentic. I had Pho, taste was fresh, light, and well seasoned. Staff were friendly and very accomodating. Will surely come back, and recommend.

Just had a wonderful meal here, delicious food with plenty of options, lovely fresh juices too. The two young ladies that served us were incredibly polite & couldn't of been more helpful. Great authentic vietnamese food and great service.

As a Vietnamese person who has lived and breathed Vietnamese food since birth - I can say that I approve. I have tried many Vietnamese restaurants across the country. The food here at Viet Quan is as close to home cooking/Vietnam that you’re likely going to get. That is a massive compliment. No “modern twists” needed. Just legitimate good authentic Vietnamese cooking. Cảm ơn chú đồ ăn rất ngon.

Popped in on Saturday lunchtime. Service was excellent, the ladies had good advice. Food was excellent.

Small quaint with food food. My kids even liked it and that’s sayin something. Vegan pho tasted very good. This was surprising since vegan anything is usually tasteless. Duck was tasty but a bit cooked more than I care for bot NOT overdone. Spring rolls were a hit with my 14 y/o. With a visit but don’t go out of your way unless typical British food grosses you out. 😆

Four of us lunched, all ate something different, two new to Vietnamese food. It was fresh flavoured, light and delicious. The lads liked the Hanoi and Saigon beers and the house rosé was good with the food

Freshly cooked, great portion sizes, excellent prices. 🌟 A little candle on the table would add to the atmosphere 🕯️

First time visitor. Very friendly, good atmosphere even on a Monday night. Food options for vegans relatively limited but I had two great tasting dishes. Would recommend.
