Had breakfast there, lovely decor, staff friendly, but breakfast menu very limited, nice quality food though, very slow to,deliver despite only having 5 customers! We asked for more bread it took 20 mn to arrive and were told we would not be charged for a piece of bread! 😂 pricy for what it was! Would not recommend

Goodness me, what an amazing building houses The Cannonball Restaurant. Even those of us familiar with the delights of Edinburgh couldn’t fail to be impressed by it’s proximity to the Castle. A super meal from an imaginitive Menu served by such charming and enthusiastic Staff. Highly recommended.

Great lunch! Our server was Courteney and she was very friendly and polite. The food was excellent. It is in the heart of Edinburgh and an amazing experience.

Myself and a colleague went for dinner after the castle lights event. She is dairy free, gluten free & I am vegetarian. The staff could not have been more accommodating and helpful with menu options and suggestions. Lovely setting, great service- we had James & James- both were wonderful. Will definitely be back, it was a lovely experience. Only downside was the toilets which could do with an upgrade to match the style of the restaurant.

Un agradecimiento especial a James ya que dirigió el equipo que nos cuidó toda la tarde. El servicio fue discreto y profesional, pero lo más importante es que muy personal y agradable. La comida y el vino era fabuloso. nada podía estar mal. Gracias.

Lovely Place in the city centre with a beautiful view of the Castle, the waiter (safia) very gentle and professional, the food was Amazing ( the huggis in special)

We went for my 40th birthday and had a great view of the castle lit up at night. The restaurant had a lovely atmosphere and the flavours were to die for. Particularly recommend the haggis balls. They were full of flavour. The staff made a fuss of me and gave me a special dessert. It was a really memorable evening and I appreciated the extra effort taken to make sure it was an enjoyable evening. We had such a lovely time here. Thank you.

Great dinning experience. Haggid starter was fab-full of flavours. Main course Fish & Chips exactly as expected - fresh and delicious. Local cider was very good. We didn't had any dessert but smell of cream brule from table beside us was incredible. Service was very professional. Very nice and elegant place, definitely highly recommend. The only downside was lack of music.

Immaculate and flexible service and great food. Went with party of 12, had drinks in the pub first before having a lovely dinner upstairs. Location can’t be beat either. Highly recommended!

We were a group of 20 and so we had a different menu from everybody else, and we'd pre-ordered our meals. My choices were the smoked trout (with creme fraiche, capers, and an outstanding lemon gel) - unbelievably delicious dish! This was followed by the pork belly with Bramley apple sauce, broccoli and toasted almonds. I can't recall the almonds because I was raving about the combination of all the flavours and the wonderfully cooked pork belly (it was only missing crackling). For dessert I had the chocolate cannonball with raspberry and creme fraiche - another super yummy concoction that was beautifully presented. Service was fantastic as were the cocktails - I had a banana daiquiri, which had a banana chip on top and some crystallised lime. Yummo! I can't comment on the price as this meal was included in our tour group's cost.

We were having dinner with family and friends. The resturant was not crowed. SERVICE was spotty. The quality of food was poor The grouse was like "shoe leather" and way over cooked. The sea bass was cold and tough. We told them they needed to hire a new chef. When we complained we received a free desert as if this justified the 300 pound bill. Avoid this resturant. You are better off with pub food

Our experience at cannonball was phenomenal. We arrived after a somewhat stressful and long journey from London, during which our train broke down. The staff was so kind and helpful in ensuring that we were able to dine at a later time. James, our server, was kind, warm, and incredibly knowledgeable about the food and wine. Was clear he really wanted us to have a special experience and he made our first night in Edinburgh and absolute success. Food was out of this world.

We had a fabulous dinner that was part of a package to see the Edinburgh Tattoo. The food was delicious and elegantly presented. A bonus bagpiper performance put this over the top. We enjoyed it so much, we came back for lunch the next day. Best proof of how good the food and service was.

Great service and food. I loved the haggis. Where else can you get haggis. Just Scotland. And where is the best Haggis? The Cannonball right at the entrance to the castle.

Went for the tattoo dinner. Five stars all around. The food was absolutely amazing. Staff took really good care of my disabled mother. Host and music fabulous. Will definitely return for dinner before heading back to the states.

What a fabulous visit to this fine establishment last night. Unfortunately, only a short visit in the Bar but it was so obvious that Adam and his team know the meaning of Hospitality. Can’t wait to return to enjoy the full delights of the Restaurant. Highly recommended.

We finished our tour of Edinburgh Castle, looking for lunch. They had just opened, and we became their first customers today. Hostess promptly seated us, and we're greeted by Iona. She brought our drinks while figuring our fair. Our food was prepared and served in a timely manner and was delicious. Iona and other staff were friendly and courteous to our needs. I thanked Iona for her service and told her this was the first restaurant in a Ling time where the staff knew how to properly serve a meal. If we ever travel back to Edinburgh, we will diffently eat here again.

Came for our wedding anniversary with our two teenagers, stunning stroll on a summer’s evening along Royal Mile to this ancient building beside the Castle, lovely views towards the castle or over the Royal Mile, atmospheric room in the old school house. Delicious food, wide choice of fish, meat and vegetarian, perfect puddings. Superb service by Hazel and Alexander and compliments to the chef, thank you all very much for making our family evening perfect. Ten minutes from train station and easy walk or from car parking on Johnstone Terrace or King Stables Road.

Fabulous food and great setting made it a suitable send off for our three day trip to Edinburgh. We loved the city but on the dining front we definitely saved the best til last!

First meal in Edinburgh on this trip and they did not disappoint. Terrific service and very friendly staff. Menu has a very nice variety of seafood and meats. Very creative appetizers (I had the portobello haggis cannonballs - tasty!). Highly recommend, though if you are partly going for the stunning view of Edinburgh Castle, be forewarned that between 1 June-31 August, it is completely obscured by the HUGE temporary arena set up every year for the military tattoo. But if you are more interested in the view than your meal, eat elsewhere.

We ate in this beautiful restaurant after we visited the castle. We were seated upstairs. The service was very good and the food was amazing. It is not the cheapest place to eat on the Royal mile, but you get what you pay for.

James and Hazel provided exceptional service this evening. We were here celebrating our 15 year wedding anniversary and we were treated like royalty. James gave us the Tasting Experience and walked us through each item and drink. We were blown away by the taste and quality of the food and the amazing service provided by both James and Hazel.

I spent an excellent time with my family, James, our server, took some time to explain the different flavor of whisky and took a pleasure to also get our feedback about some whisky we tasted. The food was excellent with some great goat cheese at the end. The server was really kind and seemed really interested in his job and whisky.

We came to the restaurant for a special birthday lunch. We loved everything! From the first class service to the outstanding food. An original, tasty food menu. We both had the fish option and it was cooked to perfection. Thank you James and Eric for the attentive service. We will definitely be back!

The food : Amazing. I had the Outlaw cocktail, a very good and tasty discovery (good idea, well mixed), the Pigeon with pistachios may have a been a tiny dry but maybe I don't know how pigeons should be eaten ! The venison was very good, the red wine excellent, and the Lanark blue also very good. My friend had the fish and the sticky toffee pudding which was one of the best I ever tasted (even if a tiny bit too sweet). The location : we had the chance to sit next to a window with a direct view on the castle. By night, this is very romantic. In general, the restaurant is very romantic, classy, chic, clean. It was a cold evening in January so the restaurant was very calm, but warm :) and has a lot of space. The service : absolutely perfect. Someone attends to you when you arrive, offers to take your coat (there's a place for it downstairs), then you go upstairs to eat and someone else takes care of you for the entire evening. They were all very nice, available and give you good advice on the food and drinks. A pleasant meal in a nice place with great service !

Food is ok, not amazing but fine and pretty much as described. Unfortunately the restaurant has all the charm and welcome of a deserted railway waiting room. It lacks charm and lacks any feeling of its sister restaurant in George St. Disappointed.

We had dinner on our anniversary in this wonderful restaurant on a Saturday night, it was a super experience from start to finish, I have chronic back pain and we requested comfortable seats and they did not disappoint, there is even a lift which you would not expect in such a historic building. The food was delicious, I don't even like beetroot that much but the beet starter sounded so good I ordered that, we had 3 courses each and we can't fault anything, James looked after us, he was incredibly professional and knowledgeable and every interaction we the other staff was excellent too, they even said Happy Anniversary when we arrived which was a lovely touch. So rare these days to go somewhere for dinner and find everything perfect.

We ate here as part of a package for the Tattoo. Food was great, service was great, drinks were great, host for the evening (and also owner) was great…. You get the idea, everything was great. Well done everyone…your great

Booked Cannonball Restaurant following the good reviews received on Tripadvisor, and we weren't disappointed. The restaurant it in a lovely location and the atmosphere inside is great. The young waiter was very well informed and spent time going through the menu with us. After choosing our meal, we let him pair a wine for us, and he got it perfect. We chose from the dinner menu and what turned up was amazing. The quantity of the food was perfect too. A great restaurant and food and experience was worth every penny.

Fabulous views of Edinburgh castle, impeccable service by James and the other staff, and the food was very high quality- if you’ve never tried haggis, this is the place to do it!

Our table had a stunning view of the castle, and our waiter treated us with such grace and hospitality - gutted that I can't remember his name as I would love to give him a personal shoutout. The food itself was gorgeous, I honestly think it was the best food I've ever been served - we were immensely impressed. Whilst we had a host of other activities planned this dinner was our main event, and it transcended all expecations we had. This was a fantastic experience, and we're eager to return.

We did a reservation in the morminig, for a 18:30h dinner. When we arrived, the menu was a different one. Less options and much more expensive. We just left the place. No evem a "sorry". PS. The same menu of the morning was still outside.

Cannonball is a great way to end the tour of Edinburgh castle! Eilidh was very attentive, funny, and helpful in recommending dishes for us to try. The smoked trout was absolutely wonderful and Shepherd's pie is as authentic Albanac.

We visiting Edinburgh for my Mother's 70th birthday and I wanted to take her out for a special meal to celebrate. I chose Cannonball based on the reviews and it was perfect. We arrived a little early, so we had a drink in the bar before heading upstairs. The quiet, elegant, warm dining room with a view of the lit up castle, was just lovely. Joanna, our server, took great care of us... from the amuse bouche starters, to explaining the menu options (and giving me choices for good vegan options), to bringing us a beautiful decorated Birthday platter of little desserts. It was all delicious. A special end to a great first day in Scotland to celebrate my Mother.

From the moment we entered we were warmly greeted by our hostess who took our coats and brought us to a cozy corner table with a view of the castle.

Had lunch at Cannonball last week with my husband. I had emailed the restaurant and asked for a window seat with a view of the castle and that was exactly what we got.

Cannonball is a beautiful restaurant with outstanding service. However the food is overrated. To be fair, the appetizers are much better than the main dishes. To start, we ordered the Chicken Liver Parfait, Cannonballs, Goat Cheese Log and Mussels and Clams. All were great. We had high expectations for the main course but we were disappointed. We ordered the Duck, Lamb, Sirloin and Ribeye. Taste was underwhelming and portions were ridiculous. We’d forgive the portion sizes had the dishes been spectacular but they were just OK. Maybe it was an off day, don’t know, but I don’t think we’d repeat if we had the chance.

We arrived on a busy friday night at peak time and not surprisingly the restaurant was full but the head waitress couldn't do enough to help us. They gave us a drink on the house (I think because I had mentioned it was a special occasion for us) and whilst we waited at the bar they kept checking in with how long before table would be ready for us. We had a great view of the castle which had a light display going on. I commented to my partner that with the level of service and the food I would have expected to have higher prices. The food was really good and inventive! A really thoroughly lovely evening at the Cannonball and our waitress Natalie was a pleasure.

I ordered a drink while waiting for my wife and before we explored the castle. It is right by the gates and just 30 metres from the apartment we were staying in on the steps beside this building. I grabbed a table outside and just watched the world go by.

I went to Cannonball for a drink with my friends. It was my first time. The place is in a really good location, the interior is very cozy and the staff was very kind. Laura served as the drinks and she was very kind and friendly. I enjoyed this place and I will go again

They are passing cheap steaks off as sirloin, or the chefs don't know how to trim beef, a rip off and really poor steak in the country of the best beef, my wife had a pasta dish swimming in cheese

Excelente experiência nesse bonito e acolhedor restaurante bem ao lado do Castelo de Edimburgo. Fomos provar whisky, (excelentes!) e depois jantar com ótimo vinho.

My daughter and I recently visited Cannonball whilst visiting the wonderful city of Edinburgh. We started with drinks in the downstairs bar - and then went up stairs to our booth. The Food - what can I say - was fabulous. the Service was attentive but not too much. On first glance it does look pricy but the portions are good and it is very good value for money. We had such a fab night - can not recommend highly enough - loved it. Hoping to go back to Edinburgh next year and will return.

This restaurant is very charming and has a lot of character. Splendid menu with a lot of Scottish dishes available, the lobster is excellent. Even better than the food is the staff that took care of us. We had a great time with Kim who waited on us, really a great experience.
