Got the scallops starter, which was nice but nothing special for the price. We had to wait at least 20-25 minutes for our main mussels to come as they forgot about it. Which was fine as they didn't charge for the bread. Probably, they were in a hurry when making our mains as we felt it was not a proper full portion of mussels , we were a bit disappointed, actually. We would have not been annoyed by the described situation, but after asking for the bill, they put a 10%service charge on. I'm normally OK with service charge but after watching the most demoralised staff I've seen in a while for more than 2 hours and forgetting our mains we felt like it's a bit cheeky to put that SC on. Food was OK but nothing special, you'd probably get this food for cheaper and with better service somewhere else in town. We will not be rushed to be back.

We met with friends for lunch at the Mussel Inn with the promise of fresh seafood on the menu, the clue is in the name I guess, and we were not disappointed! After a light starter of perfectly cooked scallops, paired with black pudding and pea shoots, my partner and I opted for the kilo pot of Shallot Mussels each, some crusty bread and a side of chips. These were the plumpest, freshest mussels I have had in an age, and I barely came up for breath. We were told by our server that they are brought in daily with a 6am delivery. Talking of the server, what great service we were given. The right balance of friendly and formal, efficient and attentive. So, a perfect lunch for me, thank you, and the only critical remark I can make is - sort your seating out. Although I’m sure it was really good for my posture, the very upright seating in the booth did not make a comfortable setting for me. Still worth 5 stars though, if only for those amazing mussels!!

When friends heard that we were going to Edinburgh for holidays, they strongly recommended that we pay a visit to Mussel Inn for a meal. We were surprised that the restaurant was packed when we arrived for dinner. We were also surprised that the majority of the diners were Asians. We ordered, among others, mussel pots, seafood chowder and seafood platter. The seafood platter was really excellent. Packed with goodies, it was delicious. Those who ordered the mussel pots also said that it was good.

Ordered 3 chilled oysters and 1 pot of shallot mussels. Both are fresh and delicious, especially the mussels. I would definitely recommend them. I was disappointed that the mussel pot doesn't come with bread anymore but after finishing the pot, I was full! Still, it would be nice if it can be accompanied by 2 pieces of bread, for the broth.

Probabilmente ho sbagliato io a prenderlo. Le cozze invece erano molto buone, consiglio comunque una visita.

This is a recommended restaurant if you want to eat lots of mussels. It's a blissful moment when you devour the abundance of mussels in the pot while dipping the baguette in the soup made with mussel stock. Unlike the mussels you can buy at supermarkets, they are large, plump, and very delicious. Mussels are also available in half sizes. I like Charlotte, but all flavors are good. The customer service from the very friendly female staff is also great. Advance reservations are required as it is always crowded. Recommended!!

Twenty years ago I worked in hospitality during summer breaks. I travelled to the beautiful coasts of Spain, and served beer and casseroles in the oldest pubs in old Dublin. Then I made it to good, old Scotland. I settled in the capital. I needed a job quickly. I paid £50 for a week at a hostel, which left me with just £30 and no ticket back home to continental Europe. I got a job. As a kitchen porter. I started from the bottom. The next year I came back to the same job during the world-renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The manager and the head chef gave me a job and offered to train me as a chef. I learned a lot there. By respecting others and learning from people who know more and have more skills in the area. I was liked and respected by colleagues for being a friendly, helpful member of the staff and by showing impeccable work ethic. There were days when we would do 850 covers a day. All between around 12 staff members working two shifts. The restaurant owners showed respect to all members of the staff. Overall good men. They also owned shellfish farms around beautiful Scotland. I couldn't have known that this experience would someday come in handy but I learned how to cook seafood and I enjoyed cooking for people ever since. The restaurant was called Mussel Inn and it was located in the historic part of the capital of the auld Scotland - Edinburgh. I really recommend this iconic dining establishment on the foodies map of Auld Reekie. I enjoyed being part of this great business as a young man during summer breaks from the University. I learned a lot about preparing seafood and can tell you for sure. They're best in what they do. Mussel Inn is a brand synonymous with fresh produce, best seafood and overall great dining experience 🌊

The chef's special board, a curated selection of the finest dishes, seems to have left an indelible impression with its exceptional quality. The mussels with chili, in particular, stand out as a highly recommended choice, offering a perfect blend of seafood freshness and a hint of spice that tantalizes the taste buds. For families, the availability of a highchair is a thoughtful touch, despite its humorous shortcomings in height. The absence of parking facilities underscores the establishment's accessible location, encouraging patrons to enjoy a leisurely stroll through the neighborhood before indulging in their culinary offerings. Moreover, the wine selection is noted for its variety and quality, paired with prices that don't deter from the overall experience. This combination of fine food, family accommodations, and a well-considered beverage menu crafts an inviting atmosphere for a memorable dining experience.

Sunshine on Leith. Mussels and beef! Finally after my third visit to Edinburgh, I managed to get into this place. Made sure we made a reservation and I glad we did as this place was worth the wait. A very very popular spot, particularly in the summer and evenings, located on the equally popular through fare just behind Princes Street. Anyone with a leaning towards good, fresh seafood cooked well, should definitely try this place out. Surprisingly though, despite the titular hint, I was not blown away by the 1kg mussels I ordered as I felt that they were slightly under seasoned and lacking garlicky-pungency (for my taste). Though they are evidently very popular judging by the orders. Nevertheless, everything else more than compensated. The seafood chowder was very very good with generous chunks of flavoursome fish complementing the silky smooth ooze which I could drink by the pint if required! Served with fresh bread this was delectable. On our table we also had the hot seafood platter - a wonderful construction, of prawns, mussels scallops and other bites in a rich sauce. I largely swerved this due to lack of capacity as the next paragraph will explain. Bizarrely as it may seem, the star of the feast for me in a speciality seafood restaurant was not anything from the sea but rather the turf. The steak burger was hands down disgustingly ridiculously good and one of the best burgers I have ever consumed and possibly one of the largest. I had this for my main and admittedly after my first 3 bites, I was concerned as to whether I could finish it. However, one the taste registered with brain, palate and stomach. I motored through this masterpiece of a burger. It was almost phillistinial to enjoy meat in a nautical place like this, but the guilt was short lived. Would not hesitate to return, when in this beautiful city again. This place is well worth the visit.

OVERVIEW One fishy…fish soup BUT, might not spoil the bunch! MINUS - The seafood chowder was at a 1* level. It tasted like microwaved double cream and tossed bits of salmon with no basic seasoning. - Very heavy; there was a thick layer of fat floating at the top of the soup (see picture). - A seafood chowder is usually a mixture of seafood; this chowder had only salmon. Other menu items might be of a higher standard and therefore uphold the reputation of the restaurant. PLUS + The salmon bits in the fish soup were fresh. + Attentive staff. + Quick lunch time service. + Walk-in lunch time availability. ORDER Starter: * Seafood Chowder

Sea bass was dry and bland, yet still appeared to have more life left in it than the worn-out staff. My wife and I visited several years ago and we're excited to return again on our second trip to Edinburgh. However, this was a very different experience. This time we had our two children. To start, the waitress outside didn't want us to sit outside even though there were a couple of free tables and told us to go inside. The host inside told us to check outside for a table. Finally they gave us a table inside. My family and I then had to wait 15 mins to be approached by someone even after trying to get someone's attention. Surprisingly as we were sat next to the kitchen and every waiter walked past 20 times. Once the food order was taken the food arrived very quickly and was ok. Nowhere as good as it was a few years ago when we last visited. Plus no one checked on us and to see if we were happy with the food and to see if we needed another drink. The only person to interact with us at this stage was a very nice Spanish waiter. We asked for a bill and there was a service charge included. SERVICE CHARGE for close to no interaction. Clearly families are not welcome here and we were seen as more as an inconvenience, besides the very good Spanish waiter. Do not go as service is bad and food below average.

We booked too late and only booked the time slot at 6:00, which was a bit early. We ordered mussels (pure mussels, no pasta) and tiger prawns. Both mussels (mussels) and tiger prawns suited our taste and were fresh. This is one of the seafood restaurants recommended by the locals, focusing on mussels. We were in Edinburgh for 3 days and had mussels for dinner. Indeed, the mussels cooked in a whole pot in this restaurant (as in the picture) can be included in Qianmao, Hu The shrimps are also crispy and fresh. The portion size is a lot for Asians. The £34 hot platter is barely enough for one person and the mussel pot goes out faster than the speed of light if you’re sharing. The haggis is surprisingly flavorful with the carrot purée sauce. The seafood pasta might be the most tasty dish but £25 is just not right. I know garlic doesn’t cost that much. They do slap a 10% service fee and while I understand that as an American, what I don’t understand is how the waitstaff never comes back until it’s time to pay and if you need anything before that you have to wave at them like you’re saying farewell to your love ones on the titanic — no one ever refills the water. We dropped a fork and no one even look at our direction. It’s all fine and good until the £10 surcharge shows up on the bill. For what? For £100 we had barely enough for the 3 of us and we highly recommend trying other seafood place before stepping into this one.

Perfect spot for lunch! Food is delicious and staff are friendly. Sitting inside is lovely and sitting outside in the sunshine (on the rare times it appears in Edinburgh!) Is also great!

We have been coming here periodically for 20+ years. More recently it has been every couple of years. This time round, it seemed obvious that there have been attempts to tighten up the profit margin, probably as a result of the rise in cost of living. The good bits: the oysters were very tasty and the mussel sauce from the specials board was lovely. The not-so-good: the wine wasn’t properly chilled which the waitress admitted, one of the oysters contained shell, the salad leaves were limp, the bread basket was chargeable rather than being included with mussels (never used to be) and the butter portion was pretty stingy. There was also a mandatory 10% service charge added to the bill, which we knew about in advance - fair enough. The staff were okay but not particularly attentive. This place is on the tourist trawl and most of the folk in there were obviously visitors to the city rather than locals. At the end, you used to get a warm lemon hand towel after handling seafood. This has stopped and the owners will say that it’s primarily a net zero imperative (good) but to be honest it’s probably more likely an indication that cutting prices has become necessary in order to maintain profitability (especially given that seafood comes at a premium price). We enjoyed it, but some of the charm of this place has definitely been lost in recent years. We’ll be back but we might not rush back or recommend it to our friends in such a hurry.

We took our Grandson for lunch today. We all had Shallot mussels. They were superb and my Grandson said they were on another level (is comparison is the ones you get in Aldi - he's 12). He loved them. The staff were attentive without being intrusive and were friendly. Definitely recommend this restaurant.

I go often. You can't go wrong if you just eat mussels and baguette! Shallot is so delicious.

Portion wise, the full mussel pot is ample. However, the shallot with wine was a tad underwhelming in taste, and the mussels themselves were some of the smallest I've had in a restaurant. Service was decent, considering how busy the restaurant was.

We were lucky to find a table around 5pm in the afternoon. Online reservation is strongly suggested. All of our orders were delicious and we were really happy from our meal. Seafood chowder large is really big, we shared with my husband. There is a plenty of seaffod in this creamy soup and taste is great. Hot seafood platter is really nice to try everyting and many mussels in this platter. Shellfish pasta is also tasty and not very creamy which i like. There are tables outside also for summer time. For seafood lovers, this place is suggested.

MINUS - The seafood chowder was at a 1* level. It tasted like microwaved double cream with tossed bits of salmon and no basic seasoning. - The most distasteful soup I have ever ordered in a restaurant! - A seafood chowder is usually a mixture of seafood; this chowder had only salmon. - Very heavy; you could see the fat floating at the top of the soup (see picture). Other menu items might be of a higher standard and therefore uphold the reputation of the restaurant. PLUS + The salmon bits in the fish soup were fresh. + Friendly and welcoming staff. + Quick lunchtime service. + Walk-in lunchtime availability. ORDER Starter: * Seafood Chowder

I recently visited this place and had an awful experience. I ordered mussels, and what I got was beyond disgusting. The mussels were foul-smelling and clearly spoiled. The stench was unbearable and made it impossible to enjoy the meal. I strongly advise against dining there. Serving spoiled food is unacceptable and poses a serious health risk. Save yourself the trouble and choose a different restaurant.

I’d love to try the food but I didn’t have a chance to do so. My booking was cancelled by the manager Ms Katherine as I was late for 8 minutes. I took Uber to go there as I knew I was slightly running behind. But when I arrived, she told me the table was already given to other customers without my consent. I was so confused about the reservation policy and tried to understand but her attitude was just rude. She even said “gosh” and rolled her eyes in front of me.

We were recommended to this restaurant by our hotel and so enjoyed it we went back for a second meal. We tried the recommended Cullen Skink soup (similar to clam chowder but made with smoked fish) and loved it. Ditto for the whole sea bass. On the second night, we shared the huge pot of mussels and then the venison done to perfection. Small, unassuming restaurant but a first-rate kitchen and friendly and attentive wait staff that make you feel welcome as soon as you arrive. Highly recommend on your next visit to Edinburgh.

Popped in for a late lunch. Service & food was spot on. Catered to a tree nut allergy within our family really well & adapted the meal which made our 10 year old very happy. The staff couldn’t have been more friendly! Food was all tasty but kids especially loved their milkshakes! Definitely recommend

Food was incredible, exactly the warming scran we wanted - I had steak and ale stew with dumplings and leek and bacon mash, my husband had fish and chips. Both great. It was very cold in the restaurant and they had both doors at the back and front open for air - understand it must get hot when you’re serving but all the customers were sitting in their coats shivering. Maybe they need to find a way to get ventilation and keep the customers warm! Service was friendly but felt a bit rushed, we were debating pudding but weren’t given time for our main to go down. Understand that it’s popular though and a queue was probably forming for tables. Would probably come back, but on a warmer day maybe!
