Food was perfect but service was terrible, 1.5 hours for starters and then another hour for mains. The place was very uncomfortably warm and we had things added to our bill that we didn’t order but were placed on our table. You literally cannot get a member of staff unless your drink is empty then they really want to serve you. We won’t be back which is a shame

The food was tasty but the service was very poor which unfortunately ruined a birthday meal. We were unable to track down any server for about 45 mins after our main. Dessert was served for my partner but I was then informed they couldn't serve me what I had ordered. We were told both desserts ordered would be taken off the bill bit when given the bill this was not the case.

I visited this restaurant on a Saturday night, and my first impression upon entering was how tightly packed everything felt. The establishment maximizes its capacity, which leaves little room for comfort. The guests seated next to us mentioned that the table behind them had waited two hours for their food. We waited about an hour for food and twenty minutes before even being offered drinks. While some reviews commend the food, the atmosphere leaves much to be desired. If you're hoping for a private dining experience, it’s not the place for you, as the tables are just a couple of feet apart. Additionally, the portion sizes were quite small.

The Viceroy Duffield is a very nice restaurants, the staff are very professional and the food was very good. I personally thought the tandoori mixed grill was the best mixed grill that I have ever had, my wife made a similar comment about her chicken tikka meal.

Complete let down to a regular customer. Waited 1 hour to be seated despite booking, then a further hour for food. There seemed to be a problem with over booking, the restaurant was heaving and noisy. We had to stand by the bar for ages in the way of all the waiters. Eventually we were offered a drink and a while after that somewhere to sit and wait.

We were booked in for 6:30pm as our transport home was at 8:50pm. We thought this would give us plenty of time. Unfortunately we queued at the door for 15 minutes before we even got to our table. We then waited another 15 minutes before someone took our drinks and food order. Another 15 minutes later our drinks turned up and so did our poppadoms. Our server told us he had given us a couple more because of our wait. Unfortunately another 1 hour and 20 minutes later at 8:35pm and with no sign of our food I asked for the bill. At this point the manager came over and said he would get our food. Despite me explaining we didn’t have time to eat it and I just wanted the bill, he stormed off and brought us our food ten minutes later. It was now 8:45pm and after 2 hours 15 minutes of our original booking time, we were given our meals. We had no chance of getting our transport home so I told the manager I was charging him for my taxi. We ate our food which tasted great but really quickly as our taxi was at 9:05pm. I then got the bill and to my utter shock they had charged us the full amount. I complained to the manager at the front and said I wasn’t happy to pay the bill as it was. Our bill was £84 which would have been fine if the service was good. He told me to give him £50 and get out and never come back. He found it offensive I didn’t want to pay my bill. I gave him £50 and told him I even felt this was excessive. I also told him being aggressive with me wasn’t acceptable given our experience. Well after 15 years of coming to the Viceroy in Duffield, I will never return. I have never received such poor service or spoken to as rudely in my life. I know I wasn’t the only customer who felt the same, a table of 6 next to us celebrating a birthday were in the same boat and started to leave before their food arrived. A table of 9 lads also complained it had taken 3 hours to get their food. The last time we visited before this they forgot to bring us our starters and then tried to charge us for them. Such a shame as the food tastes amazing. Im sure we booked at a really busy time, however, the manager should allocate tables based the restaurants ability to serve them correctly. All he was interested in was my money. This is the first time I have ever written a 1 star review for anyone.

I have never had to complain at a restaurant in my life until today. We came here for a Valentine’s Day expecting to have a lovely night as this Indian has been recommended to us previously . Upon arrival we were given a set menu which was £50 a head . I asked if we had to have this menu as there was no advertisement of it online when I booked and we would have preferred to choose our own food . The male waiter told us they were only doing the set menu that night. He then explained we had to have everything off the menu. This menu was very limited for option and seemed they had just put the cheapest things off their normal menu into this set menu. We had 2 popadums , 4 starters EACH , 3 curry’s , saag aloo , a rice and Nan bread. ( we didn’t want to eat this much hence the fact I asked if we could order of the normal menu ) . The chicken on my starter was bright pink and the tandoori starter had no meat on it whatsoever. The curry’s had around 6 tiny chunks of chicken in. The food was overall a massive disappointment and we would not have picked to have any of this. the table next to us received their pudding which was a cheesecake that was still frozen and had cress on the top of it ? We took one look and decided we didn’t want to have the pudding. I asked the waiter if we could leave the pudding and they said it was fine. As we were sat there we noticed a lot of tables having food which was not on the set menu . I questioned a waiter if we actually had to have the set menu and he replied “ erm I’m not sure sorry “ . I then asked another waitress if we had to have the set menu and she said “ if you didn’t want to have it you didn’t have to “ we explained to her that we had asked before we ordered and she shrugged her shoulders and didn’t know what to say . Our bill then came - with the desert added even tho we asked for it not to be bought out . I asked for it to be took off the bill and she refused as it was a set menu . We didn’t want to kick up a big fuss so we just payed the bill and left. We weren’t the only couple to be disappointed as a lot of people around us were also complaining about the fact we were forced into having a set menu when others were ordering what they wanted to. This meal left us feeling really deflated and like we have wasted £100. I will not be returning . Bad service . Bad food . There are much better Indians in derby

We went for a family dinner on a Saturday evening. After 30 minutes, we were finally asked if we wanted to order a drink. We'd been ready to order food, and trying to attract the attention of a waiter for about 20 minutes. I should have taken the hint and bailed then. After ordering, it took over an hour for the food to arrive. The problems seem to stem from: They've rammed in too many tables. You couldn't walk between them without having to ask people to pull their chair in. They have a group of young lads, who are really trying to do their best, but obviously haven't been given any training. A manager was walking around and berating them, sending them here and there. I felt sorry for the poor boys, who were only able to say "I'll get someone to take your order" if asked for anything, as they didn't seem allowed to do any more than set and clear tables. The more senior waiting staff are so overloaded that they don't really have the time to provide the level of service you'd expect from a restaurant operating at this price point. The food, when it arrived, was excellent. But by that time (we'd been there for nearly 2 hours by that point) we were so hungry the quality of the food was pretty much secondary. We won't be going back.

I eat out a lot, which also includes many types of regional currys. This restaurant offers fusion/ unusual twists on Indian food in addition to your traditional dishes. I've only eaten here once, but what I had was very tasty. The staff are really friendly and give you plenty of time between and after each course. Hard to judge the atmosphere as I was visiting on a cold midweek night and being such a large restaurant it wasn't exactly lively. However, it is really nicely furnished and decorated and would make a nice location for a special occasion. Special note if you are not from the local area, which i wasn't. Some of the roads in the surrounding area are quite narrow and ought to be taken with care, especially in the deep of winter. Don't let it put you off, though. It's with the effort.

Overall, disappointing. I had heard really good things about the Duffield restaurant but it's not a patch on the midland road restaurant. Service was steady, no customer care felt more like a cafe having food slapped down in front of you. Naan bread very thin. The food was OK apart from the thin naan but nothing special it certainly hasn't got the wow. The restaurant is tired and staff certainly don't go the extra mile like they do at their sister restuarant.

Beautifully cooked food, but more expensive than I remembered from previous visits, £40 a head ( poppadoms, one of the cheapest starters, two mains, two drinks each (beer, lassi)). Fish cooked gently to perfection, thoughtfully delicately spiced with flavoursome sauces and naan, not over-hot. Clear menu indicates how strong/spicy hot of each dish. I found the chair very uncomfortable, ok for husband but only if sit like a stol without touching chair back.

So... this was my first time here and we were having a meal in honour of my late grandad but the majority of the 7 people I visited with had been before, safe to say I won't be visiting again. The food was lovely but I service was awful, yes it was during Ramadan which I honestly understand BUT, why not get other people to come out on standby and take over whilst you break your fast to keep the service running smoothly? it took them 40 minutes to arrive with the starters after we had a poppadom and pickles each, 2 out of the 7 people me included had to wait until my other family members had finished eating their starters for ours to even arrive (I ordered the scallops and my brother ordered the mixed starter despite my dad ordering the mixed starter aswell which arrived with everyone elses) we then waited another 40+ minutes for our mains, I then had to wait a small amount of time extra for my seabass whilst other people were eating at our table. There was what looked like a hair in one of the starter dishes and the server said it was from one of the brushes. Fine. But then to top it off the waiter stepped on my dad's foot twice but was very apologetic so we shrugged this off and carried on with the meal. Not worth the almost £350 we spent in total and I honestly feel so let down with this place and this is supposed to be high end? Not a chance. My parents and brother have visited previously and have enjoyed it but we're very disappointed with the service this time around and I don't think anyone will be returning which is a shame because the food was nice but not top quality. A couple also arrived shortly after us waited over an hour for their food which didn't arrive so they walked out absolutely fuming which really put the cherry on top of everything that had happened last night. Not happy at all, I suggest people go elsewhere and spend your money.

We were able to enjoy half of it in the restaurant, but due to my wife having Blood Cancer, her Chemotherapy leaves very tired, so we had to leave half way through our meal. However it was all packaged up, and we took it to our hotel and enjoyed the rest of it on Friday. It was truly delicious. There are different tiers an Indian restaurant can sit at, from your traditional ‘British’ Indian restaurant in middle England to an upmarket pernickety Indian frequented by the metropolitan elite (less my vibe). Viceroy grabs the former by the scruff of the neck and smashes it into outer space. Viceroy is not just a good local curry house, it is – without a doubt – one of the best Indian dining experiences I have had in the UK. Not convinced? Please read on… you will be.. I arrived at Viceroy, it’s carpark is very busy, a testament not only to the high degree of car ownership in the area but also to its popularity. My friend had to do a very difficult reverse park under pressure round the corner. I was impressed. My evening only got better from here. The inside of the restaurant is reminiscently 1990s – big and carpeted. I love it. It not only makes for a busy and lively setting where you still have space around the tables but also took me back to family trips to restaurants during my youth (the early 2000s when everything was better and young people could buy houses). As I enter a mental space of nostalgia and fresh Indian spices, a single tear falls into my chicken pasanda… Sorry, I’m skipping ahead. Joking aside, the ambience works – it is no-thrills conference furniture bling and booths – but it just works. I sit down. “Cobra beer sir?”. Three words I want to hit me in the face while I assess how many poppadoms I think it is socially acceptable to order. “Yes, please” I respond as I flick through the War & Peace of menus – options, options, options. I opt for four poppadoms between me and my friend. It is a modest amount to be sure but I know I can eat faster than him so will easily get through three while his indecision bogs himself down in the menu: a rookie. In truth, I don’t even need the menu (I often ask waiters in Indian restaurants to not bring the menu so I can show off my extensive knowledge of the suisine). It’s my first time here so I go with my entry level assessor choice: a paneer starter, then a chicken pasanda (yes there was a spoiler earlier) and a peshwari naan (the Kate Middleton of naan breads). I gaze out, people-watching at the other diners, creating backstories in my mind for their lives and jobs, developing them into complex characters. One poppadom down. For one table, I pretend the big table of lads are having a lads curry before a big lads night out in Duffield (what lads). I overhear them talking about football. It only adds to my story. Two poppadoms down. For another table, I see it as a mum’s 60th birthday celebrations with friends and family, discussing how their kids are getting on and holiday plans for the year. They are too far for me to corroborate this but I know I will take an obscure route to the toilet later to eavesdrop. Three poppadoms down. I suppose what I am saying from this is that Viceroy really is a restaurant for everyone. We order. I’m very excited by now. The Cobra is complimenting my paneer makhani like a fine wine in a Paris restaurant (I smile knowing that I am not in the eurozone). This is living. Then, it happened. The woman sat behind me accidentally dropped a piece of lamb (vindaloo by the colour) down her top, her décolletage funnelling the failed mouthful into the very bowels of her blouse. The mechanics of her trying to remove it become a slight distraction as the plates are cleared to make way for the main. Excitement reigns. I know what you are thinking: “did you not order rice?”. No, no I didn’t. I don’t need rice. Why would I order rice when I can order bread or additional sides or maybe even two mains for myself (I have done it before and I WILL do it again). Anyway, I just don’t need it or want it. Peshwari naan is lit so I use that as my carb. I often have it second day for breakfast with jam. It’s great but I have never had heartburn like it. I digress. My main arrives. Still no sign of the rogue lamb escapee at the table next to us but I am sure she will find it later. Both mains were great. Decent portion size. Seminal naan. What more do you want? I sit there and take it all in: my food, my friendship, the large carpeted room. A tear rolls down my cheek. This is food. This is living. I will cut my story short there to keep it under 900 words (yes you have been reading for that long), but what I will say is go to Viceroy. It is exceptional. I firmly believe that Duffield is on the verge of becoming the food capital of the Amber Valley, if not the whole of the British Isles. I live in London and I am considering visiting Duffield soon to alleviate my Viceroy cravings soon. Next time I am in Derbyshire I am there and I hope you will be too after reading this.

Came on valentines. Wasn't expecting a set menu but was pleasantly surprised by the verity of dishes. Would have liked a few more verities of traditional desserts. Overall really enjoyed our evening.

It was fantastic, genuinely. They had an AMAZING selection of all Indian curries and meats with fantastic generous portions. They were funny, kept checking up on us to see if we wanted anything, I can't think of a better place. Beautiful interior, spacious car park, and will have a spot on my heart as that place in Derby, the best Indian cuisine is viceroy, run don't walk for an affordable place to eat with heartwarming food ( they also have a never ending alcohol selection for the people who drink) the service was fast, food was hot and fresh definitely worth it and I recommend! And I left with balloons as a nice gift. The food wasn't perfect and I only put4/5 stars for the food I wish I could put 4.5 , this is because I ordered seafood and I not necessarily a fan of sea food however it did taste nice 😋 with vegan options and it's halal. Less than £130 for 6 hungry people 😂

As ever, there was a warm welcome at the Viceroy. Hassan took time to chat about Pakistan and ask about us - very pleasant young man. Food brilliant - so tasty and not just the usual curry house menu. Great choice and beautifully presented.

The gentleman who answered the phone to take my order was incredibly polite and told me it would be delivered in 45 minutes. 35 minutes later the food was delivered by another very polite man. The food was hot and tastes delicious. Will be ordering again! Thank you
