What an amazing tardis of a place which draws you in with its thatched roof and promise of Wight shaped scones. It has extensive seating both inside and outside with an adjacent council car park. Bit pricey to park there ☹️. Visited three times:lunch, afternoon visit and early evening meal. There is a small bar inside and this room is the lively one in terms of engaging in conversation with one of the owners or other guests. The menu is varied and everything is freshly cooked. The scones are light and fluffy!! It is very easy to eat a lot here 😀 Very easy to reach by bus and a wee walk from the station We thoroughly enjoyed visiting.

What a beautiful place, the location is superb… we’d heard about the quirky IOW shaped scones & wanted to sample them. They were absolutely delicious, with fantastic presentation & a wonderful hostess who spoilt us. Thank you so much… we will return for more of the same. Keep up the good work.

Took my daughter after photo I g a few local places in shanklin to visit for afternoon tea. I called at 11am and was told we didn’t need to make a reservation and could just turn up, sit inside or outside for afternoon tea. However, on arrival at 3.30 we were told they didn’t offer afternoon tea as they “didn’t have the facilities to store the tier plates and we’ve been here 14 years and never offered them” I explained that I had telephoned that morning to confirm and was told they did, slightly disappointed but we chose to stay and ordered 3 cream teas and choose 3 cakes to share, Victoria sponge, chocolate cake and Sicilian lemon. The scones were huge and delicious (shaped like the Isle of Wight!). The cakes were beautiful and a generous helping, my personal favourite was the lemon, we couldn’t finish them all and were given a takeaway box to put them in to enjoy later at home. We have been before and definitely will visit again, next time we will have the sandwiches!

Firstly we went for cake and milkshake and returned for a lunchtime meal a few days later. Both occasions were great and you can tell the food is home made, the portion sizes are really good too. Nice gardens to sit outside in with old time music playing.

Stopped for a cream tea. Were able to provide gluten free scone. Cream tea came with usual clotted cream, jam and a few whole strawberries. Nice pot of tea to go with it. Can’t comment on rest of menu but can’t fault the cream teas. Went bank the following day (Friday) to find it closes every Friday.

Stumbled upon Vernon Cottage while checking out establishments for dinner (on a Monday, when some places are closed). Could not have been more pleased with the food, ambiance and service. My wife, who eats vegan, had a terrific veggie burger while I had a small portion cod sandwich after having a large, late lunch. The sandwich and chips were excellent. We shared a wonderful Swedish Pear Cider. We took scones with clotted cream to go for a dessert and while we waited had a fun conversation with the cook and our host. We were even treated to extra scones. The scones were great, just the right touch of sweetness and perfect texture. The outdoor garden setting was beautiful.

We stopped at Shanklin at coffee time, parking our car we saw the garden entrance of Vernon Cottage. The garden was so pretty, we chose to sit inside with a nice view over the outside gardens. The coffee was great quality with two complimentary biscuits, very reasonably priced and customer service was excellent. Their toilets were spotless, so 10/10 for Vernon Cottage, will definitely be back.

We had delicious food and the Old Shanklin Pie was a definite hit! We ate in the garden, which is beautiful, on all the occassions we ate there and luckily we managed to get the tables where you can sit without having to climb into the picnic tables as we are both disabled and wouldn't have been able to manage to sit at them. The staff were all very polite and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Vernon Cottage is a beautiful thatched cottage and very picturesque. We had a lovely lunch in a beautiful setting. There are many food options whether you want hot food, lunch or cream tea. The cake was exceptional. My only complaint was the lack of food choices for children. There is a hot food menu for children, which my son didn’t want for lunch so I had to order a standard sandwich for him - £6.95 for a children’s cheese sandwich is extremely steep, plus then £4 for a bit of cake. I asked if they had another sandwich option for a child but unfortunately not. Lovely setting and gorgeous food but as a lunch food establishment it would be nice to have cold food options for children

We visited Vernon Cottage when the weather was just like the picture - and the picture is extremely accurate in reflecting the absolute beauty of the Cottage, and of the gardens -it really is a lovely setting. We visited on the second day the Cottage re-opened after lockdown, where it seemed they were still just limiting service to daytime only. But, we were so glad we visited - we were able to take our bicycles into the garden which was very helpful, and the food was absolutely divine. We arrived late morning, so my partner opted for a sausage sandwich - which he said was one of the nicest he had had. Nice quality sausages on fabulous bread, I had sandwich envy, until I tucked into my own freshly made and still warm IOW-shaped scone with jam and cream. It could be argued late morning may be a little early for cream tea, but I was really keen to try one of Vernon Cottage's IOW shaped scones! It really was delicious, and full of fruit - it was worth the 15 mile cycle to burn off.I would definitely recommend a visit if you are in Shanklin, it's one of the most lovely buildings in town - I may suggest just checking the opening hours first, to make sure you aren't disappointed!

As locals we visit here regularly. Last year they reduced the scones from 2 to one on a cream tea, however they increased the scone size dramatically! And trust me the scones are to die for! Freshly baked each day. A real treat! Individual clotted cream pots (no not local, but of good quality!) and a jam that the queen herself uses! The staff are friendly and welcoming and as a business they have adapted well to the changes. In fact they were one of few places that made sure we have scanned in and very helpfully gave forms for those that don’t have the app. The garden is beautiful and you can tell a lot of love and time goes into maintaining it. They have reduced their hours this year so be sure to get there before 4:30pm as that’s last food orders. And if you’ve read this far.... as a local and as a frequent visitor to this establishment and many others........Please always try when it’s not all perfect to think about the person you’re about to rant at or leave a bad review about, because whilst they may not be your mate, your friend’s kid, or that chef you know. They are a person; a person who did come back, let’s be forgiving, understanding and kind and get our amazing hospitality industry back on its feet!

The clotted cream and jam are the standard generic packaged ones you can buy at supermarket. They charge £1.50 extra for more jam or cream but the jam given is not adequate and the menu says loads of jam given! I ordered a lattee with my cream tea it was burning hot and tasted instant. You have to go up and order food, pay etc. Whilst I’m sure this is helping them save money, if I’m paying these prices I expect table service meaning I order, eat, pay from my table. I visited multiple places on the island all providing table service and Vernon cottage used to provide it. Whilst I understand a Bussiness may have been impacted by covid and being closed, I am also impacted by this and financially strained so if I’m being charged the same as before and getting less it’s noticed. The saving grace for this place is that the scones are fresh and that is very obvious by the taste. They have lost the rating from me purley based on the cut backs.

Due to having our little dog with us on holiday we were a bit limited where we could eat or drink on the island, so this place was a godsend. We ate here 3 times and reall enjoyed 2 of the meals especially the Ploughmans lunch. The only one we didnt particularly enjoy was the Steak and ale pie, which looked nice but was a tad disappointing although plentiful if you liked the taste. The people who run the place are really lovely and they are doing their best to look after their customers in difficult circumstances as their inside restaurant is too small to open under Covid restrictions, which obviously must cost them trade when the weather is inclement. They do however some heated ares undercover to keep you dry and warm. I hope things change soon for them and all the other places trying to make a living and keeping life bearable for us all.

We often eat here and found it just as good this time. They are dog friendly in the garden area and there are covered tables. Excellent food. Be aware there is a gap late afternoon when hot food is not available.

Holidaying with our dog, this was the ideal place to stop for lunch in the garden. We both had jacket potatoes and they were so good. The service was very good too, in spite of them being extremely busy. They even brought our dog a bowl of water. A lovely garden to sit in on a sunny day. It was so enjoyable we returned a couple of days later!

Popped in for a drink as passing by this very pretty pub and restaurant. Beautiful garden with plenty of seating. We just had a drink but the food looked amazing. The cream tea was a popular option by the amount of people having one. Would definitely recommend a visit if in the area and will return on our next visit, Lovely little gift shop is part of the property.

During my wife & I's recent holiday on the Isle of Wight we ate here on a number of occasions. We were able to eat outside in the spacious garden. The food was very good & well presented

We sat outside in the garden & it was lovely. The service was very prompt. The scones were delicious & I reckon they'd not long come out of the oven, would have liked or even expected two per person rather than one though.

Lovely thatched cottage restaurant. Nice place to sit on a sunny afternoon. We had their cream tea. Very nice and strawberry added a nice extra touch. Good service. Food on other tables looked good as well. If we went to Shanklin again would use again.

Although a group of local ladies, none of us had previously eaten outdoors at Vernon Cottage. It was a very pleasant surprise to find that the garden area was large, welcoming and spacious. All necessary Covid precautions were in place.Service was speedy and pleasant although orders have to be placed in the rather small interior of the cottage. The menu is extensive containing most of the expected dishes . Our vegan friend was able to find dishes to suit her while the remaining three of us selected crab cakes with salad and new potatoes or chips. The food was very pleasant and tasty although the fish cakes were not “ home made”!The outward appearance of the toilets was not promising but in fact they were spotlessly clean .This eatery is adjacent to the large car park so would be convenient. We had walked through the land slip from Bonchurch and this was a very pleasant pit-stop before our return.

This place is famous for its views across the Solent, but only in the summer. In the winter the windows are always steamed up giving you near to no visibility outside. We didn’t eat but the menu looks good and average prices for the area. Drinks were more expensive than the Seaview Hotel just around the corner. +£1 per drink on gin & tonic. It was November on a Friday evening and all tables were reserved. We did sit at one of their best tables for our drink ‘Captain Ted’s Table’ and it was wobbly as hell. Felt like it was going to give way at any time. Come on this is an easy fix.

Nice busy cafe, lots going on with a lot of choice to make your own baguette. Popular with the locals for lunch who fancy an upgrade from a morrisons meal deal.

We have been here many times over the years and looked forward to our visit again this year. What a disappointment. We had a cream tea which consisted of a pot of tea, 2 scones, butter, cream and jam. The jam and cream pots were half the size they used to be and the butter was barely there, adequate enough for one scone but certainly not two. The jug of milk supplied did not have enough milk for one cup of tea and we had to ask for extra. I do not drink tea and asked for my tea to be substituted with coffee, big mistake, it was undrinkable. Went we went to pay we were told 'cash only' and I was lucky to find some cash in the bottom of my bag. This should be made clear when you enter and before you order as a lot of people do not carry cash. Our experience was so different to every other visit we wondered if there were 'new owners' but overheard the owner telling other visitors that she had been there 17 years. Sadly will not be returning.

Remember coming to this pub with my family when I was ten so had to come back 40 odd years later. Disappointed the coffin by the door was gone 😂 but it was a real highlight of our trip. Our dogs were welcomed and fussed over and the food at lunch was amazing, so tasty. Really friendly staff and all the facilities were spotless. Fantastic views over the garden too. A lovely trip down memory lane
