Update 2024. No change. It's still awesome and reliably tasty food with great service. Recommend. They deal well with dietary requirements and are absolutely fine about it if you're too full for dessert. The service here is warm, considerate and friendly every time. The food is authentically homecooked fayre, the right sized portions, flavoursome, perfectly prepared and not too expensive. Decor is tastefully traditional, with an open fire surrounded by chesterfields and live flame candles on every table lending to the welcoming environment. Somehow the Vernon Arms is managing cleverly to please football fans, drinkers and restaurant goers, without anyone impinging on each other and there is a great atmosphere of people relaxing in comfort. Highly recommend this very well run place and will be back time and again.

Arrived early before kitchen was open at 12noon. My friend and I were greeted with a smile and offered a drink before kitchen opened. Both had just a sarnie and beer, but it was fresh and tasty. Popped in today for lunch whilst on holiday . Had been for a very long walk and we were ravenous . From the moment we entered we were greeted so warmly . Fuss made of the dog as well . We shared some pulled pork nachos ( delicious ) . Husband had scampi and they happily changed his mushy peas for something else . I had a pie and vegetables . Absolutely superb pie so tasty and vegetables cooked to perfection ( not soggy like lots of pub veg ) . Thoroughly enjoyed our food . We were only disappointed we were full up and couldn’t manage a desert as they sounded delicious ! Charlie who served us needs a mention as he was brilliant . We would definitely return if in the area again . Such a warm friendly pub with great staff and scrumptious food . Highly recommend .

A lovely village pub with fantastic food and friendly staff. The Mrs had French Onion Soup to start, it was very popular. I tried some and it was delicious. I had Stilton Mushrooms, also delicious. We then went on to Chilli which the Mrs said was the best she’d had eating out anywhere. I had the Aberdeen Angus 10oz Ribeye in Garlic Butter which melted in the mouth. Done just as I ordered. Unfortunately we didn’t have room to try desert as we had already been a bit greedy earlier in the day. Would definitely recommend to go there and would be more than happy to return if we are in the area again.

What a great lunch. We shared a deep fried Brie starter - there was plenty for both of us. My wife had pork steak with Stilton and red onion topping and I had the Vernon Arms Black and Tan pie - beef and Guinness - both served with lovely freshly cooked vegetables. Although the pie didn’t have a pastry bottom it wasn’t ‘casserole with an added pastry lid’ - the yummy short crust pastry was sealed and cooked on the dish. Great choice of beer and wine. Overall a great experience

The meat and ale pie was sensational! The staff were good and could not have been more helpful but it took longer than I expected for the food to arrive. The Bailey's cheesecake was brilliant. I booked here after searching for dog friendly, gluten free friendly and good food. Focussing on the good stuff, booking confirmed both dogs and GF accommodated. Very friendly on arrival. Very lovely building and interior. The dog friendly area was lovely. On the menu dishes were identified with GFA which meant ‘Gluten Free or Adaptable’ with a good choice. We ordered 3 roast dinners. My GFA beef and Yorkshire pudding arrived without the Yorkshire. After checking it transpires that to meet GFA the Yorkshire pudding was simply removed. No other option. I was told I could have the YP with gluten if I wanted it… When we ordered desserts I checked first confirmed that the GFA fruit fool and crumble was in face just the fruit fool. When we shared our reasonable feedback about the interpretation of GFA, the lady listened but made no comment or acknowledgement. She didn’t actually seem concerned either way although friendly enough. The meals themselves were reasonable, the meat good quality. The gravy was lovely. Overall I thought the food was expensive for a pleasant enough but not fabulous Sunday roast. I would not return as a GF diner. It seems like a small thing but GF adaption being equal to just leaving out parts of the dish that have gluten in them doesn’t feel very welcoming. Do go there for pleasant regular food, a lovely setting, (overall) friendly staff and dog friendly indoor eating. I have marked down on value for money, and for the GFA experience. Take away the GF stuff and it’s 4 stars.

My wife and I have been to the Vernon Arms several times, for meals and drinks, so it seemed an obvious venue when her parents were staying with us. The phone booking was efficient, with useful advice on parking to use the rear entrance across the patio. Despite the busy Friday night (it's clearly a popular bar), our table in the rear room was ready on arrival. The service was politely attentive and quick, with food arriving hot just at the right moment. I opted for my favourite (and the server's) of beef and Guinness pie with mixed vegetables and new potatoes, my wife tried, and loved, the chilli burger and chips. I said to the server afterwards I was pleased not to have asked for English mustard as it gave me the chance to savour the delicious gravy and tender (perfectly cooked, the server agreed) beef. The meal was so good, one scoop of vanilla, chocolate and honeycomb ice cream was a perfect end for my wife and I. it's always wonderful to find somewhere good that maintains its standards; the Vernon Arms is one of those places, which we'll look forward to taking more friends and family to.

We booked as always (they are quite popular!) and as always, the staff are warm and welcoming. We had mains and desserts, everything we ordered was great! My wife enjoyed her salmon, my daughter finished off her pasta (very generous portion for kid menu) and then proceeded onto my fluffy chips (I had one of their 🍔 😋) Time from ordering to food was amazing though we were early eaters, even so the place was busy but atmosphere was warm, pleasant without the decibel level of most pubs/restaurants. We’ve been coming for a few years now and each time we are always pleased with the level of service (and relieved that they haven’t changed) Prices reflect the quality of their product, no doubt we will be back again. But book ahead!

We visited on the off chance they could fit us in for dinner which they did. The food was very good and we had more than enough. I had the garlic chicken my husband had pork and the garlic bread was delicious. We were so full we couldn’t eat any pudding. The staff were lovely and served us promptly we were not kept waiting long. That is the good part now the not so good part of the visit. I am disabled and all in all the pub/restaurant is quite accessible for an old building. The problem came when I used the accessible toilet. I went to wash my hands and there was no hand wash in the dispenser it was empty. I went next door to the ladies toilet to use the hand wash in there . On the shelves they had lovely hand wash and hand cream in fact they had 2 of each . These were much nicer than than hospital style dispenser that was in the accessible toilet. ( and they were full) Why doesn’t the accessible toilet have the same nicer hand wash as the ‘ normal’ toilets. People with disabilities like to use nice products too. I will say the accessible toilet was better than a lot I’ve been in and wasn’t used as storage for cleaning products but it would have been a nice touch to have the nicer hand wash and hand cream in there too along with sanitizer. I did mention it to a member of staff as I left so I hope next time I go , as I will because the food was so good, that they have thought to do this.

A popular local pub with a good atmosphere and solid British pub food. The Guinness steak and ale pie was full of meat and was let down only by the crust which probably ought to be made of 'puff' pastry. Sadly the food didn’t match the lovely welcoming service. Sunday lunch was expensive - £20 for a trio of roasts. The veg was odd - leeks and carrot with some very hard brocolli. Overcooked roast potatoes and parsnips. Potential to be a nice Sunday lunch but needs a fair bit of work. £20 is a lot for a toast but this place really cannot justify the price, sorry 😔

Over priced! £11.95 for toasted sandwich that came with small side salad, small pot shop bought coleslaw and handful chips. Had bacon and brie filling with so much cranberry it tasted more like jam sandwich. With a coffee each bill came to £33. Most costly lunch I've had for ages. Won't be rushing back.
