Verandah Restaurant at BEST WESTERN York House Hotel in Eastbourne

I recently organised a family lunch/ get together for more than 30 relatives at the hotel's Verandah' restaurant. It really was a great success, since it brought people together from across the UK (and even Switzerland!), and for some relations, after too many years to mention... Communication with one main member of staff about arrangements, as well as his sterling support and advice was excellent throughout the lead up to the lunch. This ensured that everything ran very smoothly on the day. The hotel was also able to provide a board and additional tables for displaying old family photographs and artefacts, a coat rack, storage for guests who had arrived with overnight cases as well as a clear seating plan. Nothing was too much trouble. My relatives felt very welcome by the hotel and its staff, indeed they were very complimentary about the venue, the restaurant, the bar and the quality of the food served for lunch as well as the very helpful waiting staff and other hotel personnel. There was plenty of time after the lunch for my relatives to mingle and chat to one another as well as view the displays, whilst enjoying the additional teas and coffees which were provided; this was very thoughtful and very much appreciated. This was a delightful, happy occasion made all the more enjoyable by the great hospitality we experienced. Thank you.

My husband got me a tea for 2 voucher for my birthday last year & used it @ the york Hotel! The waiter that served us was very helpful & professional! I was so looking forward to it! We had a long journey & then stuck in traffic & then had to find a car park space once we got there! So we was really stressed & an hour late! But I called them so say we was stuck in traffic! I was hoping to get more choice regarding the sandwiches & cakes! We had 1 & 1/2 sandwiches each which we had to cut ourselves & share! The sandwiches was ham & tomato & Cheese & Pickle which I thought was quiet bland for an afternoon tea ! One of the slices of bread was a bit hard! The cakes were a scone each which was very nice, a small chocolate brownie & a lemon muffin which wasn't very nice so I left most of that! I have had afternoon teas before with more fillings & little cakes aswell as scones! He offered a wide range of hot drinks! I feel all that way for what we got just wasn't worth it! I wished I said something to the waiter but he was so nice didn't feel comfortable saying anything! Can I please have feed back on this! I feel we should have had more sandwich fillings & more of a selection of cakes! Feel really disappointed & thought it was waste of the voucher! Regards Mrs D

Had afternoon tea here and wouldn’t visit again. Arrived at reception and didn’t have any record of our booking although they sent us a confirmation ! They took us through to the bar area where a table hadn’t been set up for us although the restaurant and bar area was deserted we were the only two in there. Our tea and coffee order was taken and then swiftly a table was laid for us, then a few minutes later the afternoon tea arrived. To say that this afternoon tea is about £18 per person what we received was very poor for the money there was six small finger sandwiches two scones and four little cakes. Although the cakes and scones were very tasty I thought the lack of quantity wasn’t value for money I’ve been for many afternoon teas in the past and this is by far the poorest. I know that this certain properties only a three star however if you’re paying £18 for an afternoon tea it should be value for money I certainly won’t be returning.

Bad service and bad food. It took 45 minutes for the bread to arrive. 55 minutes for 2 fair meals and 2 awful meals.

A very easy place to eat. A nice atmosphere. Menu is good considering covid and current restrictions.

Terrible experience ! Very poor ambience (room empty) although sea view beyond busy road, poor service, poor sandwiches, tea bags provided with hot water, limited sandwiches (tuna or cheese/tomato-messy). 2 Scones/cream/strawberry jam) ok, 2 X cup cakes with yellowish cream topping. Glass of prosecco ok. A gift but nothing special.

They had all right food but it was an experience out of the ordinary when it comes to service. We came 15 minutes before they closed the kitchen, but that was at all no problem for them.

Had a wonderful dinner here last night smoked haddock was lovely, cheese sauce creamy and veg perfectly cooked. Staff helpful and attentive Alec the Maitre D was lovely nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast equally as good huge selection to choose from both hot and cold. Fruit salad was wonderful fresh not all out of tins. Pastries galore looking forward to next breakfast😀

What an amazing choice was put in front of us, there were many cheeses, there were prawns, and just about the most salad you could possibly want

I can recommend this hotel as i stayed here for 2 nights 12-14th June. The Staff are very professional and friendly. As soon as you enter the Reception or Restaurant you are greeted with excellent Customer Service. Lovely feel to the hotel...Beautiful Verandah to sit outside and enjoy a drink. Food is Excellent.

My wife and I met up with my NZ cousin here for the first time for several years. Nice meal, friendly service and soft furnishings with litlle background noise meant that we could hear one another speak unlike many modern eating places. Therefore excellent for our catch-up meeting.

My colleagues gave me a voucher for an overnight stay including dinner, which i decided to use to celebrate my husband's birthday. When i made the reservation i made sure to ask if they would be able to cater for my husband's vegan requirements and they assured me they could. When we arrived i checked again that they had our request in the system and the receptionist suggested that we just make ourselves known upon arrival at the restaurant. Later that evening, upon arrival, we were seated in the restaurant and given our menus. Then a steady stream of waiters came one by one to ask our room number and checked every variation of the numbers 334 in the vague hope that we may have given the wrong room number and we may be on their list after all. Finally, an officious looking manger approached with a clip board to tell us that we had no reservation. When we failed to vacate the table, some new arrivals were told 'sorry for the wait, there are people just coming in and sitting down without bookings', referring to us. By this point i still had no idea whether or not they could cater for my husband at all and i proceeded to ask several waiters if they could check with the chef - not a single one of them came out of that kitchen with an answer. During our 30 minute wait chaos ensued as people received the wrong meals, no meals or very delayed meals - waters wandered around with plates hoping they might recognise the face of the recipient - not exactly a robust process. We decided to quit while we were ahead and relinquished our table - nobody tried to stop us. I suggested to the receptionist that i provide a receipt for our dinner for them to reimburse and off we went to seek food. As we left the hotel the maître d' (sp?) who, until this point had failed to intervene, popped up, asked if we were unhappy (i won't bore you with my response!) and thrust a business card at me for his friend's Italian restaurant - needless to say we did not go there! The fact that this restaurant is still in business is a mystery and perhaps says more about the lack of good restaurants in Eastbourne. The hotel did pay for our meal without question and we will be left with some entertaining anecdotes but this was one of the worst dining experienced i have ever had!

Breakfast was delightful, excellent array of good quality food - would thoroughly recommend (unsure if available to non-residents?)

The £22 set menu was slightly disappointing. We had different main courses and found them both to be over seasoned.

Only had breakfast in here. Had a great selection of food available, something for everyone. Not all staff knew what they were doing, but the (female) maitre de was good. Soon put tables together for us as we were eight. Drinks in the evening were served by a very friendly lady, even at 11pm towards the end of her shift, she was very friendly

With a daily menu change, together with a good choice of meals, plus excellent food, it's always a pleasure to eat in, which we tend to do for at least 2 evenings.

Wir haben als Gruppe unser Abendessen hier eingenommen. Es war ok. Wir bekamen 3 Menus zur Auswahl: Fleisch, Fisch, Vegetarisch. Das Vegetarische sah nicht besonders lecker aus.

We had the best service we could have hoped for during our stay. The Polish waiters made us feel like royalty every time we dined here. Best part of our holiday.

We were going to have the set menu but once we looked at the a la carte menu on offer we had the three course meal - delicious.

Breakfast is excellant here. Dinner is good. Bar food is excellant and very filling with good portions.

Attentive staff throughout meal making sure we had everything we needed even though busy.Food was plentiful and great value for money and did not have to wait long between courses. Would recommend.

The Lunch was very slow , we waited over ran hour to be served - there were no apologies by staff - the food was semi-warm. My order was not accurate - there were no grilled vegetables and they ignored a request for a smaller portion of food.

Good, locally sourced produce cooked to a high standard at very reasonable prices. There is a set menu which is changed daily or choose from the A La Carte menu. Breakfast is a veritable feast with a veggie option should you require it.

Ate dinner here when we stayed at York House. Very comfortable restaurant with good quality food. The service was friendly and efficient. I cannot praise the restaurant staff enough as they all seemed very happy. Linen napkins are always a treat.

Fith time here staff fantastic, run out off crackers tonight and sent someone out to get some more, nice to see young British people working.

Staff in restaurant & breakfast were lovely, but dinner was horrible. Firstly we had our starters before our wine was brought to table. Starters were ok but the main was definitely not adequate. We had the chichen pie which was served with 8 chips & a spoon of peas. Dessert was hit & miss, my husband had the Eton mess which was fine but unfortunately I opted for the rhubarb & raisin crumble. It arrived as a huge mess with a sprinkle of crumble & a spoon of custard. I couldn't identify what fruit it was as it had no taste, my dish was returned practically the way it was served & no one questioned it.We were on the included dinner package.

Dinner menu states that your meal will take bout 30 minutes to be prepared and served, ours took nearly an hour. Servers were friendly. Room is old and tired in decoration, but offers linen napkins and proper tablecloths. Portions were too large, but food preparation and plating were very nice. Our meal was included as part of a package, otherwise we would have eaten at one of several other local options. Not sure what to say in summary other than don't plan to eat here if you are in a hurry, or not overly hungry. Wine list is ok, but not all offerings were actually available.

Had two really tasty meals,served quickly,with a quality w ine.Extremely good sweet. I could easily have stayed for a week,but had to return home.

This is one of the best 2 course set priced meals we have had in any Best Western Hotels and we have stayed at a lot.

Set menu somewhat limited, although they often are. Food tasty and well cooked though. All customers were hotel residents, rather than locals.

This restaurant probably epitomizes the improvement of british food. Tip quality local ingredients cooked to order and served in a modern way. Not high refinement but simple dishes with unusual twists to them, spiced sauces and not overcooked vegetables. last minute requests for smoked haddock and variations to the dessert menu presented no problems and served with a smile. Worth taking time to enjoy what is on offer- sufficient variety to satisfy all requests. A few more better quality wines would not go amiss.

I visit this hotel very often and love it. The food is not to my liking but everyone else seems to love it

The rooms are modern with up to date fully tiled bathroom, fresh towels, sheets and bed linen all good. Room itself and bathroom a little small, although OK and manageable for one or two nights. Saw the bigger rooms which were amazing so if you can "upgrade" would be of benefit. Breakfast was lovely, and plenty of it, but other food was mediocre. With so many other excellent restaurants in Eastbourne I recommend it as a good hotel for just B&B Staff were friendly and helpful and as I say it was very clean and modern inside.

We had dinner here two nights and were very impressed with the service, value for money, and the food. The staff were attentive and recorded any dietary requirements we had. Overall an excellent experience. Would recommend it.

My wife and I had a good experience at this hotel restaurant and it came disguised as the most tasting and well presented burger we've ever had.

The menu was not extensive, but food was well prepared, well presented, and local produce - delicious! Staff were helpful and friendly yet remained professional.

Lovely quiet room clean comfortable, helpful staff great view over the sea from our room. Good place to stop if only for a weekend

The hotel was very clean, the staff were friendly and helpful and the food were all first class will definitely go back again.

arrived at hotel staff very pleasant ,room unbelievable very small ,mirror on wall plus hairdryer then a flat screen t.v in front so to use hair dryer you have to go behind TV and have the lead hanging over the t.v to use it The bath room with no bath and a silly little shower that run Luke warm in the evening and morning also a cloak room hand sink ,the toilet roll was in bad need of replacement my husband asked if another room was available but it wasn't On leaving the next day we met some people in the corridor and had a look at two rooms on the same floor and could not believe how nice they were I differently think that we had a broom cupboard it should never have been used as double room never stayed in anything like it in England or abroad will be writing to best western about our stay .

As we did not have a room I cannot comment on that. We were there for the day to watch Airbourne from the verandah. We had a lovely lunch with loads of good food on offer and a cream tea which was excellent. The staff were all friendly but efficient.

A very clean and crisp restaurant. Food was nicely presented piping hot. Service was very and good value too!!

This is a really friendly bar separate from the Hotel. Seating is out the front and inside.I had capaccino and cake which was served very quickly by friendly waiters who spoke French.

Stayed here had breakfast and a great evening meal.Staff helpful patient and very accommodating .We had ordered veggie sausages but on arriving at breakfast none were left! They promptly sent out a staff member to get some from a local shop.5* for customer service.

We chose two courses from a set evening menu. Offered good value for a very reasonable price. Food was all very well presented. Our starters were average but our main courses were good, fresh and very well cooked. Service was very good in a pleasant airy restaurant. Wine by the bottle was very affordably priced too.

Great choice and value. Not the usual items. Just a little different but not too 'way out'. 3 courses for £20. Hubby loved the steak and stilton pie and I loved the stuffed mushrooms - really more-ish

First Class location. Sit on the patio in front of hotel overlooking the sea and watch the world pass by. Excellent, helpful staff. Nice restaurant. Nothing negative about this hotel. Would definitely book again.

The restaurant staff were very friendly. The set menu was good value & nice size portions of food without being too small or huge. Nice full English breakfast & a lovely selection of hydrated juices - my favourite is the rhubarb.

If you are staying at the Best Western, we would recommend eating at their Verandah Restaurant. Good selection, price and service.

A good without being worryingly extensive menu, including a vegetarian option. Fixed Menu very good value for 3 courses, and as far as we could see the same dishes as on the a la carte, despite slightly different names! Wine overpriced, but so it is everywhere. Food was beautifully cooked and the service was excellentNot cheap, but not crazy expensive, and usual Best Western reliability

We ate here every night of our stay as the food was so good, they even kept one of our meals warm as our seven month old wouldn't settle.

This was a lovely restaurant with great staff. The restaurant manager was lovely and was willing to go out of her way to help despite some very awkward customers in the restaurant at the time!

Verandah Restaurant is inside the Best western York House hotel on the main sea front.Had three course from the set menu .All were served and displayed beautiful.Staff very helpful and gave you plenty of time, you were not rushed.You are not going to get huge portions , but I was plenty full .

The best was apart from the food the staff were HAPPY and made you feel very welcome. Jugs of cold water were on table, fresh bread/ butter, had the pork on first night excellent and chicken on the second night again cooked to perfection, well run restaurant.

Took dinner and two breakfasts here on a short break. On a fixed dinner menu, but good choice and well presented. Wine prices reasonable (for a hotel)

Very good food served by very friendly attentive staff. Reasonably price. Good ambiance. I had the risotto And it was perfect. My husband had the gammon and eggs and he said it was the nicest he'd ever had. Just enough salt to compliment the poached eggs. The portion was more than enough to fill him up. We had a bottle of wine and left very happy and contented.

Super staff, super refurbishments, super room.A very busy hotel with few vacancies - which is hardly surprising given the quality of the service.

Although the menu was somewhat limited, we had an enjoyable, inexpensive two course meal with a nice bottle of red. The staff were pleasant and attentive. Worth a visit if you do not wish to venture to far into Eastbourne town centre.

Food to a standard we were not expecting. £20 for a 3 course meal and everything was perfect. I have paid a lot more for food which is way inferior. Top restaurant quality and the service was fabulous as well.

We stayed 2 nights at this hotel and we decided to eat their for 1 night of our stay. Glad we did as we had an excellent meal. Staff very attentive. Good value & worth every penny!

We stayed two nights at the Hotel and ate on the second night at the Verandah. The food was excellent and the service was also very good. I normally expect Hotel restaurants to be a little overpriced for what they are, but the set menu here was very good value with a nice selection. If you are looking for something a bit nicer in Eastbourne, I would recommend this.

Great food, good selection (always a good sign when you struggle to choose what to pick), good sized portions. Great service too.

Sea view from inside where one could relax or sit outside on the balcony watching the world go by (and plenty of traffic).

Evening meal was lovely, great service too. may cost more than other places but the food and service makes up for the extra pennies needed.

Very friendly staff who are never overpowering. Menu that is not too extensive to be confusing but has plenty of choice.Well cooked, beautifully presented and wonderful to the taste. Could not ask for better.

We had the two course menu . The standard of food and service in this restaurant was impressive.i had pan fried scallops and my husband had the wood pigeon, both cooked to perfection. For our main courses I had guinea fowl,and my husband had gammon.fresh warm bread was served before our starters and was offered again after they arrived. The waiting staff were attentive polite.

We ate here in January and did not have a great meal. However a second visit in March proved we were wrong. Three course meal was 23.50 and included seared scallops with crispy pancetta on a bed of cauliflower puree - delicious. Main course of venison was cooked perfectly. Cheese board of local Sussex cheeses was superb and substantive. House wine at 15 a bottle. Service was excellent. We were there on a Saturday night, but the restaurant was only half full. What a shame, so.not much atmosphere. Nice sea views from our table.

Cosy, pleasant restaurant with attentive staff. Portions not huge but very tasty, especially the slow roasted pork belly. Not much veg included, you need to pay extra for reasonable portions

Small but good choice on the menu. I paid an extra £2.50 for venison and it was excellent. Very good value for money

The menu is modern British. The portions are a good size. The food is very good. Well cooked, good flavour and with well balanced menus. The wine list is not extensive, but should have something for everyone.The ambience is welcoming. The staff are excellent and very well trained. I will be eating there again.

We sat having breakfast by the window, watching the world go by as the waves crashed on the nearby shore, and the sun streamed through the glass. What better way to start the day!

Stayed here for Valentines weekend. Excellent meal great choice of food. Little extras included such as champagne sorbet,red hearts, pretty candle holders and table and chair decorations. Staff very good too very attentive and polite. Lovely atmosphere.
