We held my mother's 90th birthday lunch at the Vanilla Pod, using the whole downstairs dining area. I cannot thank them enough for such amazing food and service and a stunning and delicious cake. Mum was absolutely thrilled. I 100% recommend this restaurant.

Fabulous food. This is my favourite restaurant in Marlow. The food is divine. In my opinion, it is far superior to The Hand & Flowers which has its following due to a celebrity chef and stars. Go to the H&F then go to The Vanilla Pod and decide. I'm sure you'll be pleased with The VP.

Firstly, I reviewed the Vanilla Pod in Marlow some years ago and have eaten there as regularly as I can afford to since. The unassuming frontage and big names that surround this location make the Vanilla Pod easy to overlook. Marlow is flooded with big name high class chain restaurants. In fact you would struggle to find somewhere more densely populated with wankey eateries. Marlow is awash with restaurants that will keep your Instagram followers happy, your self-esteem high but your wallet very very empty. I am however extremely happy to say that the Vanilla Pod is a welcome exception to this. A restaurant that from the outside would give you no reason to step in and truthfully a decor that once your inside gives you no great reason to stay. To the uninitiated it looks a bit boring. Gladly that means those of us who don't need to be sat in interiors adorned with distressed wood lit with the obligatory Edison bulb get to enjoy this little slice of excellence peacefully. This is in my opinion one of the finest establishments in the south of England, I know the Michelin guide may not tell you this. But in terms of an establishment where I want to go and eat and keep going back there to eat, there is no better place in my opinion. The quality of service is exceptional. Always friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. The environment is clean, calm and relaxing. Then there is the food, well there is nothing other to say than exceptional. Let me be clear the menu doesn't change hugely and don't go here expecting to try things you've never heard of. But I think that is exactly what makes this restaurant special. It is like being part of a secret dining club that only those in the know get to enjoy. Many people will be looking for dinner in Marlow and settle on the Ivy because its familiar and a great name drop for socialites, or waltz to one of Tom Kerridge's many establishments. So if you want to impress someone with provenance or be dining at a restaurant headed by a big name chef that doesn’t have the guts to be behind the stove then don’t dine here. So why dine here?? Well for one the price. Not only can you have in my opinion an a far superior meal to its competitors but you can leave with your head held high, your belly full and your wallet only a bit lighter. I dined here most recently on Friday 25th October and as usual it was a pleasure from start to finish. When booking I was informed that the tasting menus were the only choice on offer for that specific night and I have to say I was a little bit unsure if that was going to work as the other two of my party were planning on specific items from the a la carte menu and didn't at first want the full 7 or 9 course offerings. However because it was a celebration for my birthday I assured them it would be excellent and they agreed. As always on arrival I was met by the friendly and professional staff. I was shown to my table which I must add. I’m not sure if they keep note of this or not but it’s the same table I’ve sat at the last 3 times dining here and also happens to be my favourite. I was given the menu (always presented on an iPad which I don't mind) and informed about the choices on offer. After the other two members of my party arrived we ordered a bottle of red wine which was swiftly delivered to table side and the usual ceremony of pretending I know how to swirl and taste wine came and went. Then we ordered the 9 Course tasting menu with a main of beef. An exceptionally tasty and very generous bowl of assorted bread rolls then arrived with a lightly salted butter. The bread here is always a great starting pistol to a meal and as always I have to show the greatest restraint in not filling myself up just on the bread. A nice surprise and I believe not mentioned on the menu is the amuse-bouche of cream of celeriac soup, this is served hot in an espresso cup and is the perfect way to get your tastebuds warmed up for the marathon of flavour ahead. Our first course was a wonderfully light and delicate Loch Duart Salmon with Vanilla Velouté. When this was delivered to the table I was slightly underwhelmed with the appearance as it didn’t blow me away. However the taste as expected was wonderful. It had a lightly smoked flavour and was cooked perfectly with a slight blush as your flake into it. The Vanilla Velouté just adds that bit extra to make it a wonderfully balanced and extremely tasty dish the perfect start. Following this was a dish of Butter Milk Fried Quail which was divine. The quail was cooked beautifully and what was some form of chutney (I have forgotten the exact type) just marries everything together nicely. This dish was by far the one that surprised me the most as I’ve had quail a few times at other restaurants and never have I enjoyed it as much as I did here. Next was the Shiitake Mushroom Risotto with Chestnut. Full of earthy flavours and as creamy as you could hope for. I have had this dish in some form or another every time I’ve dined here. I can report happily that from that first bite to my last it is just wonderful. The risotto rice is cooked perfectly with that tiny but vital bit of bite. Moving on from the risotto we have an exceptionally succulent and tender slice of Creedy Carver Duck with Cassia Bark Puree. Another triumph in exercising quality British ingredients and cooking them to perfection. The duck just melts in your mouth and is complimented so well by the Cassia Bark Puree which I’ve never had before but was certainly a welcome addition. Then we have the Lamb Fillet with Cannelloni Beans. This dish I was slightly worried about considering the texture of the beans and how that would work with the Tender and perfectly cooked lamb. I am glad to report it was delightful and a pairing of flavours and textures I wasn’t expecting to enjoy but did thoroughly. Now for the Main event. Beef Fillet cooked to a perfect medium rare with Celeriac Puree and Port sauce. This came out and was the size of a normal main from the a la carte menu. No complaints here. I’ve had this dish before and it never fails to impress me. Beef in its finest hour cooked to absolute perfection. The celeriac puree is so perfectly seasoned and the port sauce is so full of flavour I could drink it from a cup. The dish also comes with I believe a cep mushroom which was cooked beautifully and was so creamy, along with some baby carrots which again were cooked so perfectly and a wonderful burst of colour on the plate. Cheese is supposed to be next and two cheeses with a selection of crackers and a wonderful jelly arrived but sadly I just hate cheese and although I was assured by another of my party that the cheese was exceptional I just don’t enjoy it so I forwent the cheese. Arriving next was a pre dessert Pina Colada Jelly with Mint Granite. Served in a shot glass and a perfect way to set your tastebuds up for the sweet tooth lovers paradise. The jelly is smooth with a light rum flavour topped with a fine and delicate Mint Granite which is so fresh and sweet I eat it on its own. Obviously now we are at the very sad moment of the meal as dessert is coming and that means we are almost finished. I know sad sad times. In front of me is sat a very attractive looking Vanilla Panna Cotta with Butterscotch Jelly and Chocolate Cremeux. I have to say by this point I was quite full believe it or not and I wasn’t sure if I could manage dessert. But I pushed on through like the brave soldier I am. There was no way I could miss this. The Panna Cotta is so light and yet bursting with creamy vanilla. The chocolate Cremeux is dense and indulgent and all this is the perfect final act to a flawless service of culinary excellence. This restaurant makes every other look bad in my opinion. The exceptionally reasonable price for such a delightful and tasty meal makes me so baffled as to why this establishment is not full to the brim every service with a waiting list the length of Marlow high street. It is in my opinion nothing short of perfect. As mentioned earlier it is not a place you will find the most exotic menu or somewhere that your Instagram feed will light up from you visiting. In fact if you told most local people where you’d eaten I don’t think hardly any would know of it. But I’m fine with that. It for me represents the very core of what we should all be wanting of our restaurants. The food we produce on our shores is some of the best in the world and when it is in the hands of excellence well it’s a recipe for perfection. The simplicity is key. I have dined at a few 2 and 3 Michelin starred establishments and I am yet to find a restaurant that let me leave feeling so happy. Maybe its because at £85 for 9 courses and amuse-bouche and bread I struggle to then justify spending £300 for 7 courses and less enjoyment. If anyone from the Vanilla Pod has made it this far down this extremely long review please I beg don’t change your ways or process. It doesn’t need to change and sure a few new menu items a bit more regularly wouldn’t hurt but it’s so exceptional now please just let it keep being the humble and affordable gem it is.

We had the 9 course tasting menu, which was superb. It was so refreshing to be served a good portion of food on a hot plate/dish. Usually there is a very small portion on a large cold/warm plate. Also refreshing was the fact that a cheese course was included instead of an expensive supplement. The service was also very good and friendly. The Vanilla Pod is a small, intimate restaurant ideal for a special occasion. We would not hesitate returning.

This was our third visit to The Vanilla Pod. We were treating s friend from Cambridge who is a lover of good food. The food did not disappoint, as usual it was delicious presented beautifully and to a very high standard. The chef also accommodated our guests allergy. The Bellini was the best ever. Sadly the waiting staff let the experience down. Firstly we appreciate they were very young. However we felt that confidence and training were lacking. No real customer engagement. They introduced each course but with no enthusiasm or smile. The Vanilla Pod is great value and great food. That we would highly recommend.

An absolutely delightful restaurant with amazing food, brilliant, friendly service and really wonderful atmosphere. I especially loved the fact that you have a booking for the whole evening, ie no waiters eyeing you to vacate the table after x amount of time so that the next round of people can come in. Thus, you can take your time to enjoy your meal, spend quality time with your partner, family or friends etc. We had the 9 course selection and every dish was exquisite. They also had a very good wine selection. Being a high end establishment it's not cheap, but it's also not exorbitantly expensive either. For what you are getting, it is really great value for superb quality. I highly recommend The Vanilla Pod and will definitely come again.

We had such an amazing meal for my brothers wedding, the food was incredible and the service was great. We had a friend come to decorate the room beforehand and due to a misunderstanding when leaving I removed a little paper bunting from the fireplace, thinking it was ours. When told it was their’s from Christmas I felt awful and said we’d put it back. Then a staff member made a comment that by removing it, it had taken a little paint off the wall, leaving a couple dots. I offered to pay or restore the ‘damage’ myself even though I had been careful and wasn’t sure it was me. After a couple minutes another staff member said not to worry about it. It just put a bit of a sour note on things and made me think whether I’d come back. Update: I found out later that the bunting was ours and hadn’t been stuck to the wall at all.

We had the 7-course taster menu. The food was very good and a lovely dining experience. Would have benefited from some background music to create a bit of atmosphere as most tables were of couples speaking in low voices. Our lunch today was disappointing. Yes, an excellent variety of bread rolls and complementary delicious 'cuppa soup'. However, two of us ordered the duck for the main course, which arrived too 'rare' for the average pallet, sitting on a small pile of mashed potato with a couple of green sprigs. I sent mine back for more cooking and our friend only ate the outside cooked areas. Desserts very disappointing. Half a pear with a bit of crumble on the plate. We had to ask for some cream to go with it. Service was great but ....we will not be returning.

Yet another excellent meal. I have been going to this restaurant at least a couple of times a year since soon after it opened over twenty years ago. I have never had a poor course, let alone a poor - or even average - meal. It is incredibly consistent and incredible value - £25 for three courses on the set lunch menu and £45 for three courses on the à la carte menu. For some reason, other restaurants in Marlow get more hype - but it's a mystery to me why that is. Highly recommended.

Without a doubt the best meal I experienced during my week in London. And I chase good food whenever I travel! Attentive service, a solid wine list, and food that is both beautiful and of the highest quality. Not inexpensive, and reservations are a must, but it was worth every pound. We chose the 7 course Savour the Experience menu. There was an amuse bouche as well, a small "espresso" shot of a rich wild mushroom broth that was simply amazing with the fresh bread provided. My companion has a dairy intolerance, and the kitchen had so issues preparing food to her requirements. We got both of the main options: a poached turbot and a beef filet, which we shared. I won't go into great detail on the various courses - each was simply amazing in presentation and flavour. Portion sizes were spot on, and neither of us felt over-full at the end of our 2 hour meal. Marlow is pretty small town, and we took advantage of the perfect weather to walk after dinner and take in the (lively) night life. Next time when I'm back in London for work, I will be returning to The Vanilla Pod.

We came as a group of 14 for a golden wedding anniversary celebration, and we all had a fantastic time! The food was delicious and we enjoyed the wine flight to accompany the meal which was also amazing. All of the staff were lovely and service was brilliant. The quality of the food/wine/service is great value for money, a really lovely experience all round. We will be back 100%.

Excellent value for the food in this quaint very cosy restaurant. It is small and it is easy to hear each other talking without having to shout. The food is beautifully presented and the wine is reasonably priced for what it is.

I had my second visit at vanilla pod last Saturday evening. What an outstanding restaurant. Better than some Michelin stars I’ve been to. The staff is lovely and attentive, the food is marvellous (well cooked classic food full of creativity and surprises) The atmosphere is very warm and calm. I can’t wait to visit again.

Visited last week and didn't enjoy the food. The chips were so deep fried I couldn't put my fork into them. The Mediterranean tart was a pastry case with ratatouille, my salad was coated in a heavy dressing. My husbands steak was fine but his onion rings were overcooked. The tables weren't clean and were sticky. The final insult was the 12.5 % service charge which as far as I can see is not shown on the website. I've decided to post a review as the more I think about it the worse it is and it's now become the bench mark of how bad a meal can get.

Due to a mess up by the Chequers, Fingest, we had to find a table last minute for Sunday roast. The Stag were so accommodating, managing to squeeze us all in. The staff were super helpful, attentive and friendly. Big shouts to Miguel and Ava. The roasts were all great and we had a lovely meal. Thanks!

Since new management took over the overall ambiance has changed and not for the better. The service seems slower and the staff a lot less cheery. The food also not as it used to be . Doesn't feel like the Kings head that I know so won't be going back
