Valhalla in York

Liked the look of the place so decided to pop in. Good choice of music. Nice surroundings and atmosphere. Not sure about the one drink I had Dark Ruby Ale. It was very nice but nothing Ruby about it more like a Stout. I did ask if it was right...... worth a look in.

Popped in for a nosy and stayed for a couple of drinks Bar staff, super friendly and helpful. The beers we had were heavy, cold and refreshing. The decor is great and gives you that feel of Vikings mixed with the metal music… great place to park up for an hour or so

If you are looking for rock music, good food and beer and a nice place where to hang out with friends this is your place to go.

Good beer and mead in one of the coolest buildings.

You need to have an interest in Vikings and probably mead, but it is a great little bar. Skol 👊😎🤟

Tried the dry cider but only took one mouthful unfortunately. Didn't like it tasted like vinegar BUT that is just my opinion 😄. Cool place, great music!

Viking themed pub playing rock music... I had a pint of Wraith, a fruit cider and my hubby had a pint of Odins Judgement, a dark Ruby mild, both drinks were really tasty... We ordered a Ragnorok platter to share £34 of meaty, tasty goodness... Really great mix of flavours that really complement each other... Only thing that it could have changed was taking off the haloumi cheese chips, really didn't see the point to them and they weren't that nice, I've had better elsewhere.... Staff were friendly and allowed us to taste the drinks before ordering, great atmosphere especially if you like rock music. We will be back....

Loved visiting here, I've been twice now on seperate visits to York, the atmosphere is dark but chilled, there's viking carvings and decor everywhere. The owner was a total lovely and gave me a free mini pint glass as I found it to be the cutest thing I've ever seen, the staff are just all around lovely people. If you're lucky like i was first time you'll see a viking party upstairs where everyone is dressed up. They sell their own merch as well and the location is right off the Shambles so after a quick wander there you can go into valhalla for a drink. The only let down sadly is the toilets were bad when I visited, smelt of urine, they're shared bathrooms as there's no room for any real big toilet facilities so men and women use the same little cubicle you can lock, there was a whole tissue roll in a pool of urine and sadly that put me off wanting to go toilet there. There's not really any disability access if you have a wheel chair and you won't get to see the other two floors sadly as it's all stairs. But otherwise it's honestly a must to visit.

It is a unique place in York and North England. It does bring a very realistic rustic atmosphere and presence of Vikings. Valhalla has a great selection of drinks you would find in other pubs/ bar but also unique selection of Viking drinks. The place is quite small and located across 3 floors. Food was good as quick snacks but nowhere near the restaurant. Also bear in mind the kitchen takes orders up to 8pm after that no food available. Overall a great and very unique place.

Great pub on 3 levels, with a bar on each (although not always open). Has lots of character with tables and comfortable sofas too. The platters are really good and their chips are fabulous

We went for food and drink, it had wicked atmosphere and good food, cosy but plenty of seating upstairs. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

This kind of bar seemed perfect for me for the spirits that they would have on offer, along with the decor and most importantly the heavy music. I came on a wednesday evening, and it was pretty busy, but some spaces left to sit down and have a drink. For my experience, i had a fantastic time. Great service, loved the vodka they had behind the bar, cool atmosphere and the music was often brilliant. Great selection of food available too. However, it gets busy even around late afternoon on fridays and saturdays. Can even be packed on all 3 floors, so it's clearly very high in demand, but once you or your mates get a good table, then you're in for a fantastc night.

Came across this unique pub while strolling through beautiful York. It had loads of character and atmosphere and was so authentically rustic. Lots of wooden decor, benches and stools and a great selection of beer that my husband seemed to really enjoy🤣 it’s also a dog friendly pub.

Staff are lovely and very knowledgeable about the range of different drinks they have, found a couple of new favourite rums there! Very chilled out atmosphere and very accepting of out of towners. Had a great time there.

7 of us (Between the ages of 56 and 65) visited early Sat evening and 2 went upstairs to see if there were any seats spare. I remained at the bottom of the stairs, where I first encountered a member of the door staff who promptly told me we could not stand and disappeared upstairs to find the other 2. I had a brief chat with a few people and was kindly offered 7 seats (3 together and another 4). When the doorman came down with my 2 friends we were all told to leave as there were no seats. I tried to explain that we had found some, but was told again to leave. We did, no issue. BUT, as my friends entered the pub directly opposite, Pivni, they were 'greeted' by their doorman and told that they couldn't come in as he had received a warning about us from the Valhalla doorman, who was now standing outside the Valhalla watching us! Having done nothing at all to warrant this treatment, I find the behaviour of these 'security' staff to be totally unprofessional and needless.

I think this is my new favourite place. Enjoyed every last mouthful immensely ❤️ and the staff were great Update: revisited and the staff were still great 👍🏼 looking forward to returning again to eat as the food was looking enticing

Loved this place. The decor, atmosphere, music and general patrons and staff are all great. I didn't have any food but there's a decent little small selection. Theres live music upstairs, a great hall style long table function room available to book and a decent menu with a selection of mead (£7 as of writing for a small glass) but it's strong and tastes decent so when in Rome and all that. I'll always visit when I return to York.

A fun place to go! Theres a lot of great history here and a really good selection of ales, some of which are seemingly quite rare. Theres loads of character throughout, which is both good and bad (bad if you’re tall) Seating wasn’t supremely comfortable upstairs, with benches with no backs and quite thin cushions. Music was quiet and made it easy to chat. The top bar was closed when we visited and it was quite busy… Overall, a fun place to go, but not necessarily the best overall from my visit.

Absolutely would be returning to this venue for the mead! Absolutely would recommend trying it!

Amazing little place in york should definitely pop in if your in the city

It wouldn't be York without some Vikings roaming the streets. There was some trepidation when a Viking themed pub opened in 2017 but due to the incredible work by team Valhalla this was no naff theme pub. A simple shop was transformed with authenticity, eye for detail and quality design which has drawn lovers of those Norsemen to quaff the evenings away since. It was so popular that the whole building was converted in 2021 and even today it can sometimes be a bit hard to get in. Spread over three floors with the main bar on the ground floor and a smaller one serving upstairs. Odin's Hall on the top floor is usually reserved for functions and events. They have a great range of four cask beers, three of which are brewed exclusively for them by the local Half Moon Brewery, a DDH IPA, Pale Ale and Dark Ruby Ale, all of which are excellent. There's usually a guest and plenty of choice on keg as well. If you feel like being a Viking for the evening you can even have some mead in a horn! In a City jam packed with historical pubs Valhalla may technically be a new build but it has a unique character that really connects with the Viking City of Jorvik and is definitely an essential visit when you go a Viking. Sköl!

Great vegan food! We had the Sif platter board and the sweet potato and sweetcorn cakes. Everything was lovely and really reasonably priced. The venue is also really cool, we will definitely be back again!

Came back every day that we were staying, I never wanted to leave amazing drinks, atmosphere, staff, music, and I didn't get a chance to try any of the food but it looked amazing.

Good pub, liked the vibes. Staff are friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend the mead. Sadly didn't have time to eat there, but menu looked good and the food I saw being delivered to other tables made me want to eat there next time I'm in York.

Popped in Tuesday night... i didn't want to leave .... says it all really love the atmosphere of this place as someone that has been bought up with medieval reenactment etc this place was amazing. Music was my taste too and was lucky enough to go in when they had live music which the guy singing was awesome tho I can't remember this name. Wasn't much choice for juice like drinks ( no j20s etc ) for someone that doesn't drink alcohol but it didn't put me off. There's a beautiful room upstairs what looks like it's for private parties for eating maybe ... Would be amazing if food offered could be gluten free too .. something to think about. If your in york I would definitely recommend popping in. I will definitely be visiting again.

Great place and atmosphere. But they do have a doorman counting people in and out he will say got. Tables. For 2 or 4 but when u go in nobody seats you so there loads of tables for 2 then you find tables for 4 onky have 2people on

great pub quiz and pub atmosphere. very old and traditional style which was fantastic. would highly recommend.

A very unique, fun bar in the centre of York with a viking theme, a solid choice of ales and spirits and a lot of rock music.

Had a fantastic evening of drinks here this past weekend. Got a table just in time as got very busy at both the ground floor and upstairs bars, but well worth it. Mead was fantastic and beers were great. Décor was fantastic and loved the music playing. Will be going again the next time I visit York

Came to York for a day trip, we needed to eat something and we came in for some food and beer. Food very good same as beer. Great service, cool vibe good prices as well. Defo will come in next time we gonna be in York.

Stopped in for a drink and ended up meeting some lads conducting thier own pub crawl. I invited them over and we sat, drank and laughed for about 45 min. Nice place and the staff was very quick with the drinks. Although Viking themed, it definately has a biker bar slant to it. Fun place though.

First time here tonight courtesy of York restaurant week. My partner and I had the sharing platter that was priced at £32 for £25. A lovely evening, this place has a great vibe, friendly staff and tasty food. The place is dark with limited lighting, which may not be to everyone's liking. I was a bit wary not being too good on my feet. There are stairs to contend with if there isn't room in the street level bar area. Looking forward to visiting in daylight hours. Fab looking merch too.

What a wonderful bar! The theme has been executed so well... the food is outstanding! We had a sharing board and the quality of ingredients was mind blowing. Really, really lovely selection of Ales and spirits as well. The Japanese dark ale I had was probably the best I've ever tippled. Thank you!

Great food, great atmospehere, great staff looking their part! We were well looked after. Plenty of seating up the stairs at the back as you walk through the main bar area and through a corridore.. Toilets are up the third set of stairs. We ordered our food in the main bar ground floor, just remember your table number.

I was so excited to visit here!! We drove 4 hours to York and it was one of my must sees! The decor was very cool but the atmosphere and staff are very dull and unfriendly. I walked in with a big smile and tried to make conversation with the staff about the pub and there was just no response. I saw the tip jar saying "Make us happy and give us a tip" so I thought their attitude was a gimic.. but could be wrong.. Its just a tourist attraction and if it wasnt i dont think people would go in there because of the staff. They could make it so much better if the staff were friendlier. Ended up in the pub opposite.

Valhlla Awaits, it's worth it! Great boozer

We came to Valhalla for munchies and drunks. We shared two platters which had more than enough for two people at a total cost of £24. We had the Thor platter and the regular Valhalla local cheese board. All washed down with a bottle of white wine. The decor of the pub is funky but be careful up and down the stairs as the lights around the floor can be a bit blinding.

Ordered drinks only, no food. Prompt, friendly service. Friendly atmosphere.

We've been before and like the place. Staff are friendly and the drinks are good. We had lunch, which was fab. A good stop off place before more sightseeing in York. We had the Odin's platter ... no fries on the menu as shown in choices below...honestly, you don't need them as the platter is generous and very filling

I have been drinking in bars for many years and usually one just blends into another, nit this place it was fantastic. I loved every minute of being in there. Great decor great staff great food great range of drinks.... Need I go on. If your in York it's an absolute must.

An amazing place to meet, eat and drink. The decor is stunning. Make sure you go upstairs to the All Father's hall.
