Bison Coffee in York

Coffee and food not as nice as the photos I saw before going: coffee scolding hot and served in a tall glass with no latte art. Bagel average and sparsely filled. I was the only customer for the 30mins I was there.

Lovely atmosphere and good coffee, highly recommend!

Went when I was in York previously and it was fantastic. This time, under a new owner I'm told, it was just so-so. Coffee wasn't anything special and the vibe had changed a lot. Gone were the students busily beavering away on laptops and at time of visit there was just no atmosphere - suggesting it's not as popular as it once was.

Lovely little place, good selection of bagels, toasties, sweet treats and drinks. Offers vegan and gluten free options (including breads and bagels) and is dog friendly, they even have a dog gallery wall! Would recommend the cold brew nitro coffee with tonic and lime, never heard of it before and wasn’t sure how it would taste but it was fantastic! Reasonably priced and cozy!

Great coffee and the most amazing brioche bun with egg & halloumi, Korean bbq sauce. Got to sit outside in the January winter sun

Very professional staff,the owner is very polite and humble person. I am very fussy when it come to bad attitude from staff,but this place customer service is excellent,you feel your are welcome from the minute you walk in.i had a latte and it was proper italian latte.i will go again to this place for another quick snack and coffee. Great coffee, great food. Stopped off on journey to York. Parking nearby and great place before hitting the busy parts of York.

Very pleasant ham, cheese and tomato toastie with good white americano for £8.80. In the back room it had the good feeling of being in someone's home, which probably was once. Nice chap serving. No laptop policy.

Chilled vibe. Lovely latte. Tasty turkey Christmas bagel sandwich.

Went for a wander from work and wandered in. Small selection of cakes and toasties / bagels. The pastrami cheese and pickle bagel was lovely. Plenty of filling. Great tasting decaf coffee. And they sell alcohol if that's what you fancy. Worth a visit if you're in the area.

Popped in on a Sunday afternoon. Service was fine. However I was underwhelmed by my turkey, avo and mayo bagel. The turkey was a slice of processed turkey. Just so disappointed and little flavour or taste. My partner had a toasted cheese sandwich which was much better. Hot drinks were fine, my flat white tasted good though could have been hotter. As I was paying I spotted the cakes etc in a cabinet. Pain au chocolat in cellophane wrappers, sort you buy in multipacks in a supermarket. Probably the same supermarket where the turkey was from. Disappointing again.

Quirky place to have a good coffee. Veggie breakfast rolls are really good - make a change from meat replacement sausage. Staff overheard us moving because we’d sat under a music speaker (I’m having hearing loss so just makes it tricky) and came to turn the volume down without being asked. Well worth a visit as a much better, independent, alternative to Costa!

We liked Bison Coffee so good we went there 2 days in a row. The bagels with pastrami, cheese, pickles and tomatoes are excellent, the bagel turkey club was excellent. The brownies and canolis are excellent! Coffee wad good.

A lovely little independant coffee shop. The coffee is fabulous too. Great range of delicious hot, sweet and savoury snacks. Would reccomend.

Quiet cafe, perfect for getting a cup of coffee. Delicious food, would highly recommend the cannolis and bagel. Will definitely come back

It's a small little place, but the food and drinks are absolutely wonderful 😋🤤 by far the best brownies ! Love it's dog friendly - take my dog there she loves all the fuss

Amazing Bagels at student prices! Lovely coffee and a great place to meet up with friends. The funky decor is very welcoming and homely, and I really love the quirky details like the vintage spoons that come with hot chocolates! The staff are amazing, friendly, and super helpful, I love coming here and bringing friends and family. Also love the vintage clothing rack sale in the upstairs!

Insufferable yuppie hipsters that have a zero lap tops rule, I'm assuming for some kind of "be in the moment and talk to each other" nonsense. Defeats the purpose of why like 90% of people even go to a coffee shop. Coffee and snacks are alright nothing special.

Lovely little coffee shop! Came in with a friend and had a fantastic brownie and latte. Cute old building with plenty of seating in the back. Fun pop-up vintage clothing rack as well!

If you were looking for an office space that delivers coffee to your desk you should really be in one of the large faceless chains. This is a small, dog friendly, (& about 8 well behaved humans) as far from generic chain as you can get. Good coffee, brownies & toasted bagels. 70s rock playing. Personally cant fault it.

They don't allow you use your laptop. This is the first time I've ever heard a coffee shop telling you how to use your table. And I was with a friend, so it wasn't like I would occupy a table just for myself (the shop was empty, too).

Lovely, friendly little cafe, the latte and Christmas Pudding slice were both delicious!

Wonderful atmosphere, perfect cosy hideaway for those rainy days. Had the most sublime bagel, there was so much to choose from! Coffee was wonderful and the staff were so helpful and welcoming. I would 10/10 recommend to anyone.

Nice range of coffees with some nice unusual blends and roasts. Friendly staff and a small peacefull environment. Like being at your grans for tea. Laptops banned!! 👍🏻

Quality coffee, lovely bagels and such a brilliant artsy atmosphere. Every time I visit, I Shazam some of the music The decor in step with the rest. Highly recommended for a slight deviation out of the hustle and bustle of York city centre.

Not tried the food but can confidently say the coffee is some of the best in York. Has a nice community feel which separates it from the more corporate atmospheres you find in city centre. No laptops is an understandable decision considering how small the building is, and how students such as myself typically take up space with very little spending. They’re also very dog-friendly from what I’ve read. The house blend has a sweet, nutty tone that leaves you wanting more in the best way possible. Meanwhile, the balance and texture of the milk has been spot-on each time I've visited. On top of all that, the coffee is far more affordable than most places (£2.60 for a latte.. in this economy).

Very quaint coffeeshop with lots of character. Cozy rooms in old house with lots of antiques. Cortado was on the weak side.

Most lovely staff, great coffee, great vegan options, yummy bagels! Small place with a lot of ❤️ and character aside from the tourist buzzing of the center. Dogs are very welcome and ours was provided with cuddles and biscuits. We would come back any time!

Great coffee place, for sure one of the best in York, a city with stiff competition! Almost goes without saying the coffee is excellent, food is very tasty and reasonably priced also. Finally, I’m really impressed by the playlist; I think I’m yet to hear a song I don’t love playing here!

3 of us visited this small coffee house located just of the city centre with seating available inside and out. We were well attended by the 2 staff throughout. The coffee was great as were the toasties, bagels and brownies our table ordered. Will definitely be a repeat visitor.

Singled out Bison today following a delightful visit, pre-lockdown. Settled down to do an hour's work with a coffee (or two) and a brownie, then noticed the 'no laptops' rule. Previously online you have defended this rule on grounds of Covid regulations, but these no longer apply. Presumably this rule works for you financially, but it comes across as unfriendly and unwelcoming. I had planned to buy a pack of coffee on leaving, as I did before, but was not in a mood to do that. Sorry.

Bizarre rule on no laptops - needed to do a quick half an hour of work while having a cup of tea and purchased 2 pieces of cake specifically to justify a seat for half an hour as I am not an unreasonable person. Tea and vegan brownies very good. Would be better to have a time limit on tables rather than policing how people spend their time. Should be better advertised as I wouldn’t have come here if I had known I wouldn’t be “allowed” (!) on my laptop - but having already bought my tea and cake I needed to sit down to have it. I asked about seating before I purchased and it should have been made clear at this point by staff as most people would assume you can use a laptop in a cafe. After 30/40 minutes I was all but asked to leave in front of a full cafe (despite me already having put my laptop away) - which was rude and made me feel extremely uncomfortable and unwelcome - amateur. Any half decent customer service would have been much more subtle and perhaps asked if there was anything else I would like to purchase. Clearly care more about getting customers through the door than customer experience for those who have already paid their money.

It’s small and a little bit outside the main city area but it’s well worth the extra few minutes walk. It’s brilliantly simple - just great coffee and amazing fresh cooked brownies. Loved the retro music too. If I lived in York I’d be a frequent visitor!

This cafe serves lovely coffee, both regular and decaf, and also serves a number of chocolate brownies with different flavours. The staff also could not be more friendly and welcoming.

We stopped by late morning on Sunday and it was v quiet. Lovely decor, friendly staff and good music! Also v good coffee, teas and cake - I had a delicious raspberry brownie.

Best coffee that I've had in York until now! If you really want to support a small business or you just enjoy quality coffee, this is the place to try.

the vegan brownies are addictive

For a while I've been noticing that this place always seems to have people on those couple of tables outside. Finally had a chance to visit, for a black americano. Was nice, whether it is any better than, say, nearby Busk I'm not sure, but I'll order again if I'm in this area.

Lovely local coffee shop, brought my puppy as they’re very dog friendly - they couldn’t be more accommodating (as she was very excitable) and they came to my table to take more order and let me pay etc. Delicious food, had a salmon bagel with VERY generous portion of salmon! All very reasonable prices too. Thanks very much to all at Bison!

Coffee - whilst not too hot, and not bitter, I couldn’t really taste the espresso shot in the cortado over the milk. Brownies however were amazing

Lovely little coffee shop. I got a cheese and tomato toastie and a vegan Oreo brownie and both were delicious and fairly priced. This place seems to be a good stop-off for cyclists and has outdoor seating which was ideal for a hot day like today. It is very convenient for a walk around the city walls which we did after visiting.

Always a great welcome at Bison Coffee House. The coffee is great and the hosts are very friendly and welcoming. Great selection of tempting chocolate brownies of different flavours. Samosas, toasties if you like something savoury. Highly recommended. Forget the multi nationals. Try this excellent independent. Highly recommended.

Really love it here ,great atmosphere, the coffee and cakes are are perfect. A little hideaway for half an hour,sometimes you need it in York. And the lady who works there makes it.

Went for lunch. Staff were rude and unhelpful. “No laptops” signs everywhere - are we not in 2020?? Toilets were closed (apparently due to licensing?!) - as far as I can find it’s illegal to not provide toilets when serving food/drink to be consumed on...

If you like: rock, cozy but super cool places and an absolutely great coffee then boy, oh boy! You should definitely visit this place! :) Only small minus? It's super super small, so if there's like 10 people inside..it would be quite crowded, but hey! Just give it a try

I couldn't love this place more. The staff are friendly and welcoming, the walls are covered with pure character, and the coffee is out of this world. Whether you're looking for a break from the outside world to read a book or a coffee and a bagel on your way to uni, Bison has you covered.

I loved it because it was literally sitting in a terrace house's small dining room. Really friendly staff, great coffee, and they even kept my partner's son's forgotten purchase from Yorvik safe and sound until we can get back to pick it up. Lovely people. A real gem off the beaten path in York. Give it a try. The coustomers are an eclectic mix. Something different for a change, but be prepared to squeeze up and chat to someone new!
