The Lord Nelson in York

We went to The Lord Nelson for a Sunday lunch as a birthday celebration. It was an absolutely brilliant lunch from start to finish. The service was great, drinks came quickly, and the menu looked great - with reasonable prices. The food was absolutely delicious one of the best roast dinners we have ever had. Thanks for a great afternoon spent in a great relaxed atmosphere.

Nice if not massively interesting beer garden. Lack of choice of cask ales down to covid restrictions. Staff warm and friendly. Didn't have the opportunity to try the food yet. Will be back.

Delicious food, great selection of drinks and friendly and attentive service - the perfect place for an evening with friends and family.

We visited for Sunday lunch on 26th Jan and as always the food and service was excellent. We always appreciate good service and tip accordingly but notice now that you apply a 10% service charge, we would have expected this to be discretionary but didn’t see anything that suggested this was the case and we weren’t told that this was discretionary either. We were surprised with this change and would welcome some feedback on this issue.

We have wanted to try The Yorkshire tapas for awhile, and it didn’t disappoint. There were lots of choices, including specials. Gorgeous flavours. All served in a lovely atmosphere, with a drink or two

We rarely go anywhere else for a Sunday lunch. The roast beef is amazing and huge Yorkshire pudding.... can't fit a sweet in!

This is one of my favourite places to dine and when it comes to Sunday lunch, I wouldn't go anywhere else. Brilliant service by Nikki, Tom & both Pete's, not forgetting the Chef and his team. The food is delicious, hot and quality local produce, served on hot dinner plates. As for Sticky Toffee Pudding, I class it the best I've ever had, so you must just try it and you'll be hooked. 10/10 for us, book early so you're not disappointed. I wish more venues would put as much effort into Sunday lunch 👍

Went over Christmas 2024 with 6 adults and 3 kids as staying nearby. food was amazing, service fantastic. Very pleasantly surprised with the quality and value. Highly recommend

Booked a meal for 7 - had a thoroughly enjoyable experience - atmosphere was ideal - food excellent and the service made us feel well looked after. Well done and thanks to all involved.

We had Christmas tapas. Every dish was delicious. The sticky toffee pudding was possibly the best I've had(and there's been a few). Service was great, lovely friendly staff. Would highly recommend, can't wait to go back.

We had Sunday lunch last Sunday and it was absolutely fab!!! The best sunday lunch I have had in a while!! I had the beef.. it was beautiful. Can't wait to go again.. and the desserts, oh my, I had jam roly poly.. omg it was heavenly.. the staff are wonderful and the ambience was great... Want to go back this Sunday and try something else. Defo recommend..

A revelation - rescued from the threat of an ignominious end, this pub is now a great place to be, inside or out. Well done to all involved. Edit: this place goes from strength to strength and the tapas is fantastic. A thriving and cozy independent pub with a great outside area and a friendly family running it - everything you need and more.

What a find. Had Sunday lunch. The staff were so friendly and actually the best I have ever come across. Food delicious, atmosphere so lovely, people obviously enjoy being there . When I am next in Yorkshire I will definitely book in again. The best Sunday lunch I’ve had in York in a long time. Absolutely delicious from start to finish. Tasty food, and perfect portions. The mushrooms with white wine sauce were tasty. The roast came with perfectly cooked veggies, delicious gravy and fantastic Yorkshire puddings. Finished off with a generous sticky toffee pudding and cup of tea! A truly delightful Sunday lunch, quality food in a friendly relaxed atmosphere! Will definitely be back! Thank you.

Poppleton Ale Trail No.1 A bit cool in the beer garden , so moved inside. Smallest pub in Poppleton but definately had the best choice of beer. Food smelt gorgeous , so will be back to try some.

Lovely choice of tasty local tapas. The service was excellent and there was a good lively buzz about the place. Good range of well kept cask beers. What not to enjoy!

2nd visit to treat my husband to some tapas. The presentation and quality of the food was excellent. I had BBQ pulled pork and crispy battered cauliflower, both delicious. My husband enjoyed the crab arranchini and brisket in mini Yorkshire puds. Will return.

Having lived in Poppleton for a long time It’s great to finally have a local pub where you know we’ll get a great meal in a very enjoyable atmosphere. Food is beautifully cooked and presented. We’re already booked in again for a couple of weeks time.

Have eaten here many times and food is always excellent. However on my last visit on Wednesday I consider there has been a big compromise on the portion sizes, very disappointed.

Enjoyed our first visit to The Lord Nelson. Taps were very tasty and surprising filling. Will try some different ones next time. Coffee with a small desert a good idea. Enjoyable evening all round, would highly recommend. Must try the Sunday lunch next.

Great place to eat with lovely relaxed atmosphere. Eat there regularly and never had a bad experience. Good value for money too.

Nice evening paddle from York to this lovely little, but busy village pub. Fantastic pint of Ainsty Ales Cool Citra and cracking tapas style food. Small plate but big flavours. Order a few different things to get the most from the menu. A great experience and highly recommended.

Excellent food, friendly service, what more could you ask for?

Popped in to the Lord Nelson for a drink with our little dog as it was recommended by the campsite we were staying on. The menu looked great so the next day on our bus trip back from York we stayed on the bus the extra mile to the pub to eat. Young guy at the bar said no to the dog in the restaurant (understandable) but then no to serving us food in the bar as "it might get busy later" (it was 6.00pm and we would have been gone by 7.30). Young lady behind the bar suggested to him that we could have a table in the corner of the bar but he wouldn't budge. Very disappointed and long walk back to campsite.

Great village pub that we visited around tea time. We just had drinks but food is also served. Large beer garden round the back. Dog friendly.

Don’t bother emailing to book a table. Daughter emailed yesterday early in the morning to book a table, no response by early evening today. So rang for the man to say he’s just given the last few tables away. Surely when you open you’d check emails before letting people book a whole day later? They never have the evening on a Friday off and this was a rare occurrence so won’t be able to visit as the pub is shut Mondays and Tuesdays. Poor customer service

Absolutely 1st class Sunday lunch. Great choice on the menu and real ales. Red hot plates Freshly cooked tasting food. Fabulous service You would be daft not to go and their tapas during the week is immense. And Pete's just finished his pizza van for now. Great job Tom and team.

Well what can I say, the best Sunday Lunch every. The beef/pork/chicken were all beautiful. The yorkshire puds light and crispy. The roast potatoes fluffy inside crisp outside. Cauliflower cheese yummy, lots of sauce, other veg all cooked to perfection. Extra gravy in a little jug. Pete thinks of everything and is a great cook. The starters and sweets were a gorgeous. Thank you Tom and your team we loved everything.

Very poor Sunday lunch. The beef was like watery leather. I thought it was just me but everyone else had an unsatisfactory experience. Wine and glasses sea low grade. It’s a shame as it’s a nice looking pub and staff were ok. Won’t hurry back 🤨

We arrived after a recommendation from some one local. The food we had (tapas) was one of the best I have ever tasted. Meatballs, beef, chicken, prawns mushrooms, Freshly cooked and so amazing I am glad we did not have time for dessert as we were totally stuffed. Amazing restaurant amazing food. We will be back

We enjoyed some really nice tapas food that arrived hot, fresh and tasty and we accompanied it with some bread. Our favourite dish was the crab risotto arancini. The service was excellent as was the ambience. The only downside is that it was very hot within the restaurant area and we would have been more comfortable if there was a window or door open to allow some fresh air in.

Lovely place for a sit down while out for a dog walk in the beer garden

I brought my Dad,93 , for lunch on a lovely sunny day so we ate in the pleasant garden. Interesting menu with daily specials at a reasonable price. Very friendly landlord, nothing too much trouble. The fresh crab salad was excellent and Dad enjoyed his hot pork ciabatta with gravy, chips and salad. We will be back!

Tom (and family) have transformed The Nelson since taking over a year ago. A popular local pub serving a good selection of ales and wine. Reasonable priced with regular quiz nights, occasional bands and themed nights. Dog friendly and nice outside space.

Great variety of drinks all staff very friendly and welcoming, the food was amazing. Would highly recommend pub for all the family with amazing food and service. 9.7/10 (nowehere gets a 10)

First visit. Warm welcome into cosy bar area. Dog friendly. Staff attentive. Varied lunch menu. Food served promptly and well presented. Spoilt by small main course portions and the need to order extra sides. Food pleasant but lasting impression overpriced for size of portions.

Another exceptional Sunday lunch here at The Lord Nelson. Food delicious, atmosphere relaxed and staff have got it so right. We can’t go anywhere else now as it’s always a disappointment now we’ve tasted the best. We took three first timers and they too gave it 5* in all areas. This is a cracking little pub - totally changed since the new landlord came in and renovated - so ignore any reviews older than a year. It’s a proper village pub - but everyone is made welcome. A modern offering (drinks and Yorkshire Tapas) but with traditional family pub values. Living in the village, I know that everyone I know at least considers this the best pub in Poppleton. Book early (like weeks early!) or try to get a late cancellation for the tapas. Have eaten there three times now in recent months - consistently delicious. Tom and his team are great hosts. Love it!

Our first visit to the Lord Nelson for a number of years and had a great night. The newly refurbished interior has been very well thought out and is both welcoming and cosy. The ‘Yorkshire Tapas’ menu offered something for everyone given the meat, fish and vegetable options - all very reasonably priced (£5.90-£6.10) given the quality and portion sizes. We were advised to order between two to three dishes, which was spot on with the warm bread as an additional side. The meatballs in paprika sauce were gorgeous as were the jalapeños croquettes. Nice selection of sweets/puddings rounded off a lovely meal and evening out. We will not leave it long until we return again - bookings are a must as it was very busy in the dining and bar areas!

Friendly atmosphere Food amazing

Party of 5 on a Thursday lunchtime for 2 birthdays. From the moment we walked in we felt very welcome. Ordering drinks and food was no issue, even though they were busy. The food was excellent, said all 5 people, with different meals. Apparently the sticky toffee pudding is "one of the best". A compliment if ever there was one. Total cost was less than expected, so that was a bonus, as I was paying. Can recommend but would advise ringing to book. The Lord Nelson is now on our favourites list.
