Valhalla in York

Any time i go to York, I always come in for a pint.

Checked this place out online before we ventured up to York on Wednesday, and made a direct bee-line for it when we arrived. The clue really is in the name - this is a brilliantly themed, Viking pub - it's just quirky and cool and atmospheric all at the same time. The menu is also a very well thought out idea - Platters and Sharing Boards that match the decor, but with a proper Yorkshire flavour - and all value for money and every element of the Odin board that we had, was fantastic. A must visit for lunch when in York, and make sure you make the journey upstairs to check out the second and top floors - really, really cool!

I've visited this venue several times travelling 1 1/2 hours to enjoy the atmosphere the food and the brilliant surroundings, highly recommended to all who enjoy rock music and a viking venue.

What a bar!!!! If your a metal fan then this is the place to go in York! Good music awesome staff and a cracking atmosphere🤟😎🍻 didn't eat here so can't comment on the food,...... just go it's ace😁🥳

What a brilliant find in York. For anyone that likes Rock music but is fed up of the same 10.songs, get in here! They played all the stuff you only hear on your private playlist. The service and atmosphere was ideal for us and the beer was cold and kept well. It was so good I even bought a T shirt and we went for a second night. Thanks for a lovely night we will be back

Fantastic bar! The staff were amazing and very knowledgable. The historic ambiance really made the experience and although the drinks were quite expensive, they were worth the price!

Bouncer on the door didn't allow us in as it was "Full" so went to pivini opposite and watched him let young women in and stopped everybody else disgraceful. Thanks for the response, i sat and watch him turn couples away and then let in groups of women moments later, your venue might not be like that but the guy on the door has an idea of who he wants in.

Excellent atmosphere, just had drink but will eat next time we go. Bar is over 3 floors.

Great place, fantastic food and atmosphere

Lovely themed pub. Thought it would be a bit of a gimmick but I was pleasantly surprised. Friendly staff and great mead with a plethora of snacks and appetizers to choose from.

This pub was ok, seemed a bit gimmicky and the floor lights made it very hard to see where you're walking. Service wasn't outstanding, it was busy so happy to let them off a bit for this. Overall it was just ok

Great viking themed bar over 3 floors (although top floor is a function room and toilets). Sometimes has live music on. Nice beer and interesting meads.

Absolutely stunning place. The beer, the food. the Staff, THE MEAD! Over 3 floors, this place is an absolute MUST visit when you're in York. Regular quiz on a Monday night and live music. Big Ups to the lovely Chloe.

This was a really cool bar with some good food. Liked the viking theme and we were lucky to get a seat in the front room when we came in. It looked pretty busy and popular. You order at the bar and we had some good beer and charcuterie board type food. my kids loved it.

We had heard such good things about this pub for food, drink and atmosphere and we absolutely were not disappointed. Great tunes playing and loved the general feel of the place. We ordered food and were told we would have a wait but that was fine as we got some lush drinks in as we waited (ales,beer and mead!) The food was delicious and exactly what we were looking for, a picky style plate. We ordered a meaty and a veggie board, both were equally delicious. Next time we are in York, we will definitely be returning

Staff were slow and inattentive and customer service was poor. Visited a few years ago and had a good time but this time was not a great experience.

Banging pub, mead was top notch. incredible atmosphere and service too, especially the young lady with curly purple hair - what a legend.

The worst service ever!!! We wanted food, were told the ovens were off, so we said we'd go somewhere else. 10 mins later we changed our minds and I went to order a cold platter. I was the only person at the bar, 4 staff ignored me for 5 minutes. Polishing glasses, chatting and generally doing anything but serving was more important. When I was finally acknowledged I was told it was just past 8 so the kitchen was closed. The barman showed me his watch it was 20:00 I had missed the kitchen by 5 seconds!!!!! It's a shame as the bar is nice, the food looked good but the staff don't seem to understand that serving people quickly, efficiently with a smile keeps them in a job and bar profitable. Anyway, if you want a rock pub go to The Artful Dodger instead they have lovely staff, the drinks are way cheaper and the music is played at more than whisper volume!

If you are a Viking this is the Pub for you. Great atmosphere.

Ic and Flic on their Christmas drink trail spotted this bar near the market. A new one for me. A viking themed bar over three floors. Lots of wood, viking shields, runes etc. Grabbed a table by the bar where they have three real ales under their Valhaala name. Also two real ciders. I had the Valhalla Pale Ale, very good. Explored the upper floors. The Alfather hall is on the top floor. Good visit on the week before Christmas. Quirky bar.

A little on the expensive side but expected it would be as it's in the centre of York , food was delicious and cooked to order 😋 only down side is the toilets 🚻 were on the 3rd floor so would be difficult for people with mobility issues, otherwise definitely worth a visit

Fab pub, but grumpy doorman. Would not let us in citing no seats available, even though we told him friends were already inside with seats saved for us!! Went elsewhere instead and friends followed on.

Didn't eat but it has to be the best pub in York.

Went there 9 12 24 £ 17 for 1 and a half pints extortion, I would have left drinks on the bar but unfortunately the wife went for the drinks if the very smug barman had said the price of the half pint she would have chosen something else. It’s no good stating the price list is on the wall you can’t read it properly without stretching over couples at the table. Other than that was good . Suggest bar staff let customers know the price before serving .

Unique pub experience. Loved the mead!

Visiting this pub felt like I went back in time to the Vikings ages. I loved the mead they served, too!

Best place in York! Very unique atmosphere, cosy. The food was so tasty and fulfilling, I would advise to everyone.

A fantastic venue in York with great music. We had a selection of beers and meads, each one was great. We ended the evening with food - the Ragnarok sharing platter. It was wonderful - the ribs were especially spectacular, they fell off the bone. The only (minor) complaint would be more halloumi fries and that's from a dedicated meat eater!!!

Viking-themed pub in the heart of York, with aptly named beers and meads. Cozy enough, one really needs to take the decor with a good pinch of irony, but it makes for a good pit stop while exploring.

Valhalla in York is a must-visit for anyone looking for a unique dining experience. We tried The Odin plate, and it was absolutely delicious—packed with flavorful selections that felt true to the theme. The quality of the food and drink was top-notch, and it made for a memorable meal. The only downside was that we had to wait a bit to find a free table, but it was well worth it once we were seated. If you’re in York and looking for something different, Valhalla is the perfect place for great food, drinks, and atmosphere with a fun, Viking vibe.

Lovely atmosphere came here with some friends very busy but if your happy to wait for a table they will get you in where they can ASAP :) sold mead as well lovely place

You know what kind of place Valhalla is (if the name itself isn't enough) when you enter the hallowed walls. Across the threshold you step over the bones and weapons of a fallen Viking, now dining in the great hall with his fellow warriors. Seriously though, Valhalla bar is all about the ambience. It's dark, it's cozy, it's heavy metal. This place is beyond cool, and it would easily be my local if lived in York. My wife and I had dinner here in September 2024. We dined upstairs in the great hall, but there were a few little side areas that looked cool as well. We shared one of the larger charcuterie boards and several glasses of mead. The food was exquisite. There was a boutique Sheffield cheddar that was 'oh my god' good. The mead was delicious; spicy, sweet, fruity. The bar is small, but with lots of choice. Service was quick and friendly on a lightly busy weekday night. I loved York, it's a fantastic city. Can't wait to return, and to drink mead in Valhalla again.

Always come here when we come to York. Usually busy, sometimes tough to get a table. Great place, though well worth a visit.

Had a great time here celebrating my birthday in the All Fathers Hall!

As the name suggests this is a Viking/ Norse themed Pub, I always go when I visit York. This time we went upstairs and ate some good food washed down with 2 pints of Gatekeeper Porter. Music is Rock so it was right up my street.

Gorgeous food, gorgeous venue/decor, gorgeous staff. We ate by the bar so we had a small table. If you’re going for food I suggest upstairs or outside as it comes on large platters. Decent vegan selection for the vikings to be fair. My family loved all the beer

Maybe I got my hopes up too much? I’m not sure... The place is nice and has a good atmosphere, but the food was just alright. The cheese board I ordered felt a bit overpriced compared to others I’ve had for the same price. Maybe I just had high expectations for this visit, but it didn’t really wow me. That said, it’s definitely a unique spot in York and worth a visit!

Quirky place, which is obviously trying to give the viking feel to it. Didn't have any food here as we'd already eaten. The music is rock type, which I don't mind. It is very dark and sultry inside, with lots of little rooms. Big wooden tables in some areas with viking type murals on the wall, etc. Reasonable selection of beers and certain spirit, this is not a wine bar, though. Made a change from the usual pubs. I'm not sure I'll rush back, but it's a good experience in York. I can imagine it's good with a larger group. Again, toilets are tiny, but again, they are reasonably clean, which was nice. The bar on the floor we were at ran out of the only fruit cider on tap. But york was very busy this day.

Excellent pub and atmosphere. All decorated like a Norse mead hall runes & viking art throughout. Delicious food and a large variety to drink. The staff are welcoming & friendly staff it's all topped off with a hard rock and heavy metal sound track. I adore this venue

Great pub just off the Shambles in York. Good beer, great music and great staff.

After reading some of the poor, but funny reviews by what can only be described as idiots who don't understand licencing laws and manners, I decided to leave a gleaming review (I was going to anyway). So, here goes. Wife and I who are huge viking fans and fellow pagans went here, naturally, and immediately fell in love with the decor as it reminded us of our viking wedding and festival attendances. It's small and cosy but given the age of the building, it really isn't a problem. It's how it would have been. However, plenty of room in the next 2 floors with exquisite decorations and homely surroundings. We were hungry.... so ordered the ragnorok.. the dish to end the gods of hunger raging in our bellies! Ironically even acting as fenrir and eating odin wouldn't be enough. It was big. Lovely perfectly cooked meats, the paprika fries, pork, chicken, meatballs, everything. Wonderful! The mead... now... I have to say as a meadmaker myself, sampling them was a joy as they taste like mine! A compliment of huge proportions, or huge reassurances, take it what way you wish but they were lovely. People may be put off the price but for what you get and the process involved, worth it... every drop. Don't waste mead! The staff were brilliant and were true valkaries of food and booze. Felt like I was on the great hall! Highly recommended even if you are, or are not, a viking loving norse adoring hungry pagan. Management, don't listen to the obviously moronic people who don't know UK licence laws. Keep it up, stay great, stay (bi)frosty, and... a huge great big... SKÅLLLLLL!!!!

Awesome atmosphere. Staff are friendly and helpful from the moment you walk through the door. Downstairs appears small until you realize there are multiple floors for seating and it's actually huge! Decor is incredible and we loved the limited lighting, created a really warm and cozy effect (however a family were ruining the vibe a bit upstairs by having their flashlights kept on on their phones). We didn't eat on this occasion as we had booked for dinner elsewhere but we saw some incredible platters come out! Our drinks were lovely and we'd love to return.

This is a must visit for its beers, mead and atmosphere even if you're not a viking or rock music fan. Didn't eat this time but noticed that the viking themed dishes still looked as tasty as when I have eaten there.

Lovely little find. Staff really friendly and helpful. Fruit cider was like a smoothie. Food was really good. I don't even like pork pies but it was delicious. The Forrest mead was really nice. Service was quick and atmosphere just as it should be in a viking bar 🍻 went back later in the evening and was great then too.

Had a great lunch here. We had the Rangarok player and it was excellent. Our vegetarian friend had the Sif and she said that was awesome.as well. Busy when we went but we got a table and food was cooked to order served to us and we enjoyed it.

We had so been looking forward to visiting Valhalla and it did not disappoint! We had the Ragnarock Platter and it was absolutely amazing and totally worth every penny. The staff were really friendly and the whole atmosphere was spot on!

So cosy, warm, rustic viking bar. Food came very quick and tasted great. Prices were little steep and bit too much ice in drink but overall experience was great. Reccomened and will return!

The perfect place for that Viking feel. Great food with a friendly atmosphere and service. Comfortable seating all over. There's multiple levels, so if it looks busy on the main floor, you can go upstairs. You can easily spend a while in here, taking it all in!

Went today for the first time very welcoming and drinks good price the food what can I say. Had there ragnerrock food meal and it was the best I have had everything was so so tasty. If I lived in york that would be my place I would recommend to everyone

After a full day exploring York, we headed to Valhalla to sample their delights & it was a perfect ending to our day. They had a good selection of ales, spirits & mead that helped wash down our Ragnarok & Vidar platters.

I recently visited this bar and encountered a very rude staff member that completely ruined our experience. From the moment we walked in, his attitude was disgusting. Instead of a warm welcome, we were met with awkwardness and outright rudeness. He snapped at us when we asked a simple question and seemed annoyed throughout our visit. It was surprising how someone in customer service could be so unprofessional and dismissive. The atmosphere could have been enjoyable, but his behavior overshadowed everything. I won’t be returning, as kindness and respect should be a priority in any establishment.

Viking themed bar with heavy metal music. The decor quite impressive with many details, feels a bit like 3 floors from the 900s. Good beer. Dim lighting. Food arrives on shelves.

We had the Odin Platter, and it was awesome. The Sheffield forged cheddar is brilliant. They have a good selection of beers and Ipa. I had a go at the Mead, and it's an acquired taste. It's fun if you like Beerr, good food and Metal....

Wow just wow. Ragnarok amazing. Service and atmosphere brilliant. Love it x
