Upwey Wishing Well in Weymouth and Portland

Love this place. Gardens, staff and food are excellent. Now for the BUT. It has become very noisy and it is difficult to have a conversation at the table. Of course, due to its popularity, it is usually full even at this hime of year when the weather doesn’t allow outside sitting. The ceilings are low and the tables close together. We have been there when there was a ‘wake’ also there. Outside now the walk near the well is full of tables and chairs as is another area used for weddings. I loved the peace and atmosphere it had before. I don’t blame themoeners during tnese difficult times but would appreciate no background music please.

Accommodated our party of 7 even though we didn’t book! Warm and cosy in the marquee in the rain. (So English) Excellent hot food served quickly by lovely staff.!! Next time we will book!

My favourite place to visit when in Dorset. This place never fails to please. Decided to not go for the Sunday roast which was a risk given that they’re so delicious but opted for a ploughmans and was very happy having chosen it. The food and staff and service are great and the grounds are beautiful. Highly recommended

What a wonderful event we visited to have brunch with Peter Rabbit and Lily. Crumpet and fruit for children all for £14 with singing and dancing afterwards in the marquee. As always a great menu for the adults with delicious food. Our favourite place and now we’ve booked for Alice in Wonderland on Easter Saturday.

From the Sunday Carvery we both had Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. Wonderful tastes and the portion size was bang on. It was our first visit - but it will not be our last! Oh, and the garden, Source of the River Wey beautifully crafted. Thank you.

This is by far and away the best tearoom/café I have ever visited. The welcome is genuine, the food is amazing, and if I could give it six stars I would.

Had an afternoon valentine's tea, got to say it was amazing... brilliant staff, very welcoming , nothing was to much trouble...you can see why the place is full ... beautiful water gardens, all in all we shall definitely be returning...thank you so much...

I booked a table for four for the Burns Night celebrations, as I liked the look of the menu and entertainment. It was a sell out. The staff were very attentive and friendly, and seemed to manage to serve all tables in a timely manner. The food was first class, and the chef even came to the table to answer questions we'd asked on the cooking method. The music played all evening, so an evening enjoyed by us all, and look forward to the next one.

We were given a voucher as a present but never heard of the Wishing Well, and we weren't disappointed. We had a warm and friendly welcome into this charming tea room - however the food was far more than a typicaly tea room. From sandwiches to main courses, everything looked delicious (we did keep eyeing up what others were having). We decided on the Welsh rarebit scone which was delicious and although classed as a small plate, was more than enough. One of us had dessert - the crumble - which again was a very generous size and delicious. Definitely recommend this little gem. We'll be returning to try out more of the menu.

7 of us and a dog went for lunch and had a wonderful time. It's a gorgeous place with a lovely garden to walk round and the food was fabulous. There was plenty of choice for our party of gluten frees, vegans and vegetarians and it was all delicious. We were served by a lovely young lady called Meredith who was welcoming and friendly and coped with our many and complicated requests with patience and great good humour. We shall return and I highly recommend it to all.

Went for Sunday Roast beef on 27/10/24 excellent. Loved the work they put into the exhibit in the garden for Halloween. Been going to the wishing well every time me & my wife visit Dorset. Staff are always so friendly.😍

Not allowed fried egg for breakfast, but it's on the menu for lunch! Maybe the fried egg chef starts later? Took the shine off it for me, I've tried their poached and scrambled eggs but nothing beats a fried egg for breakfast.

We enjoyed a family Sunday lunch here as part of our daughter's christening celebrations. We found the food to be delicious, the service attentive and the staff friendly. The restaurant was fully booked and the staff were extremely busy, however they worked exceptionally hard and we couldn't fault the food or service. We are looking forward to returning soon and seeing the beautiful gardens in the sunshine.

Called in for a hot chocolate and milkshake with my son. We were made to feel really unwelcome by one member of staff in particular. Our drinks took 20 minutes to arrive, 5 minutes apart and were not particularly nice. I don't usually complain about anything but really spoiled a lovely afternoon

Beware!! The prices on the menu are not the price you'll pay at the till! They add on a Service Charge, but do not mention this when you pay. There is also a box for Tips!! Bit greedy and cheeky? I have not been to a place where they add on a Service Charge for years, but they think it is still common. If you were given a bill at the table and could therefore see it, that is one thing. But with a brunch etc you tend to just go and pay at the till, and there is no mention at all of the Service Charge. This can add quite a bit extra. Apart from that, nice food and coffee.

Absolutely lovely Sunday lunch in the marquee at the Wishing Well! The marquee was warm with a heater and blankets. The food was delicious, with gluten free options. Fantastic Easter Lunch, absolutely delicious, the roast beef was to die for. But what makes this place special is the service with a genuine generous and heartfelt smile. An absolute pleasure to dine here, absolutely happy to recommend ! Well done team

Absolutely amazing Bunny brunch for Easter. Delicious food, fun surprise for the kids and stunning water garden for the easter egg hunt. So impressed! If we are ever in this area again we will be back. Happy, efficient staff too. What a gem of a place

The most wonderful Sunday Lunch you won’t find elsewhere. It’s a MUST book on a Sunday and you certainly will be glad you did.

Came here two years ago with my mum. I thought it was so good I would come back in 2024. I am on a GF diet. I realised before ordering the scones would be small. I asked to order an extra scone which I was told I would be paying for two cream teas. So I had two scones and two sets of jam and clotted cream. There was an option for a scone on the menu. I paid £12. I felt guilty of the waste of jam and clotted cream I didn’t touch. I don’t feel I will be coming here again. I’m feeling like they were trying to squeeze money out of me. I’ve been to some places where one pays £8 for two gf scones, one jam one clotted cream. I don’t remember experiencing this before.

Have just returned from the tearoom celebrating my birthday. It was a fantastic dining experience! The place was full on Tuesday lunch time, the staff was very busy but every one of them was relaxed, cheerful with a sense of humour. Service with a smile added to the great atmosphere and fantastic quality of food. Thank you to all staff for making my special celebration extra special by providing such great service! I recently had the most delightful experience at Wishing Well in Upwey! The meal was not only scrumptious & yummy, but the fantastic menu offered a variety that catered to every taste. I had the creamy mushrooms on sourdough then a delicious apple cake to finish. The gorgeous gardens were very charming, and the staff were not only happy but also incredibly helpful, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. A truly wonderful dining destination – five stars all the way!

Came for afternoon tea for Mother’s Day. There were so incredibly busy but they didn’t compromise on the quality of the food or service one little bit despite that. They were absolutely fantastic! The food was incredible, the staff were so helpful and quick and I would recommend coming here again in a heartbeat.

Our last afternoon tea was at Fornum’s and - hands down - afternoon tea at the Wishing Well was better. We had a lovely time celebrating Mothering Sunday and the food, atmosphere, and service were impeccable - lovely manager Sarah made us feel incredibly welcome throughout our visit (and was forgiving of the fact we arrived rather late for our booking). Sarah was attentive and professional and ensured my Mum had a fantastic time. We will be back.

My sister and I took our mum out for a high tea Friday afternoon for mother's day treat at Upwey wishing well cafe from start to finish we were made to feel special especially for my mum who thoroughly enjoyed it the table laid out was s lovely touch the staff were friendly and efficient even when they were very busy the manager explained the different sandwiches scones and cakes which was all delicious on a three tier stand the high tea was delicious and very good price with what you were given lovely taste and quality of food we really enjoyed this and we are coming back in May thanks to all your team at Upwey wishing well cafe

Amazing from start to finish! The best scone with clotted cream and jam scone I have ever had. Could not recommend this place enough.

Went to the Wishing Well yesterday and had the most incredible high tea. All the staff were very attentive, friendly and made sure that my friends and I were well looked after! The Wishing Well has the most incredible setting, with beautiful views throughout the garden. The food was a highlight and was very well priced! We were gifted two High Tea vouchers and redeemed them today. Really lovely setting, attentive staff and delicious food. A nice touch to serve the cheese scones and vegetable quiche warm. A nice enjoyable treat.

The staff were very nice and the service / attention was great. The gardens are like a tardis, thought, this won’t take long, I was wrong, so quaint. However the 3 * are for the price of the High tea, £48 for the contents of this picture ( High Tea for two), do they all charge this amount. The taste on the palate was all good, just the cost, I know things have gone up, just took the shine off the activity

A lovely place, clean and tidy. The breakfast tasted fine but I did feel over £8 for a small slice of sourdough, half a smashed avocado topped with one tomato was very expensive. I think it should have been two slices of sourdough with the poached egg included

Had a lovely Sunday lunch at the Wishing Well. All the food was excellent, lovely service, fairly priced menu. The Wishing Well is a characterful building that welcomes you and gives you a hug as you walk in! Lots of lovely cakes on display and the milkshakes are out of this world! It's a delightful way to end your meal by taking a turn around the lovely gardens and visiting the actual Wishing Well and river at the back of the restaurant. At the Wishing Well, you can be assured of a high standard meal in a very pleasant ambience. Great for families and special occassions and vegetarians and vegans also catered to.

Last minute choice after picking pumpkins nearby in the rain. Due to a ‘no show’ table they were able to accommodate all 5 of us. We had a delightful late lunch, all different choices and all excellent. We bypassed desserts but took home a selection of their marvelous cakes instead. Well done! We will return.

Traditionally a strong family favourite for somewhere trusted to be the best quality food and service without question. Today we were booked to sit outside and with the British weather doing what it does best and changing in a heartbeat we were apprehensive - after being seated in the gazebo area we soon realised our 87 year old birthday gal was not going to have the best birthday celebration - with that the owner came to the table to offer us a table set up further inside with a patio heater - this was welcomed and we settled to order drinks. With that - thanks to a ‘no show’ table, we were welcomed inside to the warmth of the main restaurant. All the staff were polite and accommodating, food was incredible as always and we enjoyed the whole lunch. Thank you for going beyond to make it the best experience for us all, especially the birthday gal!

Our friends had visited before so we knew it was going to be very good. Certainly lived up to our expectations. The tea room is set in beautiful gardens, with the River Wey appearing from a spring in the grounds. We were lucky with the weather so ate in a little arbour outside and ate a superb roast Sunday lunch. Considering the number of people there, we didn't wait too long. The food was delicious - both mains and desserts. Everyone who works there is very friendly and welcoming. The tearoom is dog friendly, and I would certainly book as it is very popular. I can see why!! The parking was along the quiet road, and we found a space in the little church car park. Well worth a visit!

Recommend by family, we visited today and enjoyed a selection of panini and the mackerel pate dish. Followed by cream tea. WOW!!! Such fresh, tasty and delicious food and service was excellent. Surprised to find that you are unable to leave a review on their website ? I took my Granddaughter here today, a long awaited visit that I had promised her all summer. I ordered scrambled eggs with sourdough toast & tea, my Granddaughter ordered American pancakes with fresh fruit & cream with a hot chocolate. This came to almost £26.00. after a wait my tea came , after another wait our food came , sometime later the hot chocolate came followed by the cream for the pancakes. The scrambled egg was so dry I could slice it, one mean piece of dry sourdough , not buttered. Pancakes were 3 small shop bought pancakes all were burnt (black) all around the edges, the 'fresh' fruit was frozen (defrosted & mushy). So so disappointing we were so looking forward to this special time together. Last visit for me I'm afraid : (

We had afternoon tea here and it was wonderful. The cafe itself lovely and the staff very friendly and welcoming. When we got there at about 2.45 it was very busy as people were finishing lunch. Our table was booked for 3.00 so we had a walk around the beautiful garden. There were streams and pools and, of course, the wishing well that dates back to George III. There are tables and chairs near the water as well as inside. Afternoon tea itself was delicious. Three different sandwiches, scones still warm from the oven with cream and jam and a selection of individual cakes each one very tasty. The scones were the best I have ever tasted. Had a lovely afternoon and will definitely go again.

Had a day of soaking up Weymouth vibes and stumbled upon this absolute gem. The outdoor garden by the river was lovely especially with those heavenly homemade scones.
