My wife and I went to Upstairs Downstairs tearoom on February 17th and were very upset at the treatment we received. I ordered drinks for both of us and a bowl of soup and a sandwich for myself, explaining to the very pleasant waitress that my wife has a severe digestive disorder and asked if it would be acceptable for her to eat a sandwich she had made for herself (plain turkey on wheat-free bread). Over the years we have visited cafes and restaurants all over the country and made this request which has, without exception, been met with sympathy and understanding. At Upstairs Downstairs, however, this was not the case. The waitress said she would have to ask the owner whom she thought would be reluctant to allow this. She returned a few minutes later to say that the owner had grudgingly agreed , subject to my paying a surcharge, even though the café only had one other table occupied by a couple having what appeared to be morning coffee. I then asked politely to speak to the owner who refused to come out of the kitchen to see me. We therefore cancelled our order and left the café. I should emphasise it was not the surcharge, as such, which was the problem as this would probably have been no more than my usual tip. Rather it was the complete lack of understanding and empathy for someone with my wife’s very distressing and painful condition. We then went to an alternative establishment called Salt and Pepper just across the road, and when I ordered a meal and explained my wife’s situation they immediately agreed, and offered to supply her with a plate and cutlery despite the fact that the café was nearly full. Thank you and well done Salt and Pepper. Needless to say we will not be returning to Upstairs Downstairs any time soon.

In a world full of major brand carbon copy coffee shops, it was an absolute pleasure to discover this little gem on the main street in Monmouth while on a short break this week. We had just resigned ourself to another chain-store panini when I spotted the signs from across the road. This is a very small cafe located at the back of a charming gift shop. We were a larger party of 4 adults and 2 toddlers and took up most of the space but this wasn't an issue. All of our meals were excellent. I personally had an warm Italian bread with brie and bacon which was really flavoursome. It came with crisps and a side said and was a very generous size. Others had sandwiches which looked equally amazing (and I am told tasted amazing too). My 3 year daughter had a ham and cheese sandwich which she said was 'delicious'! We then followed it up with cakes which had been sat tempting us from the display on the counter next to where we were seated. I wasn't disappointed! I had the best slice of carrot cake I had ever had. Again a generous portion but perfectly baked, not at all heavy and with a delicious iced topping. My wife had warm apple cake with ice-cream which looked amazing. The other members of my party had other cakes which I am told were equally tasty. The whole cafe was very well looked after, clean and attractive. There is a single toilet in the back. Note there is no baby change or high chairs provided, but I wouldn't expect that in such a small cafe. Our toddlers had a really warm reception from all of the staff and we were made to feel very welcome. All in all the cost was on-par with any chain coffee shop but the quality was so much better. If you are looking for a unique, delicious and great value place to eat in Monmouth then look no further. Highly recommended!

Popped in after shopping in Monmouth! The shop is lovely walked to the back and sat I asked the lady what kind of coffee they did and she replied with "the same as everyone else" I'm not usually picky but I found this to be a little rude a simple we do lattes, cappuccinos, etc, would of been better! I went for hot chocolate in the end as I picked coffee cake to eat! The hot chocolate was still at the bottoms of the glass(I stirred and scraped it from the bottom) although I could tell it was hot chocolate I found it tasteless. The cake unfortunately wasn't much better the sponge was didn't taste of coffee, the only bit that did was the grainy mousse type butter cream in the middle. I was disappointed!

Visiting Monmouth, we were looking for somewhere independent to have some coffee and cake, and this looked a welcoming place. When we went in, we could choose comfy armchairs at the front or dining tables and chairs at the back. We opted for the armchairs, which were very comfy. Two large coffees arrived, along with a slice of orange and chocolate and a slice of lemon and ginger cake. Both cakes were moist and absolutely delicious. The person who served us was very friendly and welcoming and it was lovely to eat surrounded by different things to buy. We'd definitely come here again on our next visit to Monmouth.

M&S have been slated for charging for an extra tea bag, but they are not the only ones - an extra charge on our bill at this cafe turned out to be because hubby had requested an extra tea bag! When we said we did not have sugar so perhaps should get a discount we were told "It's your choice not to have sugar." It's also our choice not to return after spending over £18 on tea, a card and a gift!

Being a traditionalist I like afternoon tea in nice surroundings with proper crockery, a teapot and home made cakes. We got all this in the lovely tea room in Monmouth. The owner (I presume) was very friendly and helpful and suddenly had a rush of customers shortly after we arrived. It seemed everyone decided to call in for tea and cake shortly before closing the sign about to be turned was kept as open which was nice instead of turning people away.We had the orange chocolate cake which was like how I would think a giant jaffa cake would be but in reality they are not as good. It was very orangey with chocolate on the outside, really rich but great. We did a cake swap out of food envy and I ate my partners warm apple cake with ice cream. We will definitely return when we are next in the area and see what treats are being served.

This is a lovely little cafe on one of the town's main streets: you'll find the Monnow Gate arching over the River Wye just a few hundred yards down the road. The menu is 'light lunch' with daily specials shown. Mostly, the savouries are sandwiches (hot and cold). And the sweets are mostly cakes and scones. There is a variety of tea and coffee on offer and the cappuccinos are very nice here. I had one of their Italian Hot sandwiches and thoroughly enjoyed it. My wife had a pasty and asked for plain lettuce for her side salad; they provided this with no additions, which was exactly what she wanted. It makes a pleasant change for a small cafe to provide what the customer actually wants! The cakes we had were very good. The staff are friendly and efficient and the atmosphere pleasantly charming.A nice place for a quiet lunch.

Met friends to celebrate big birthday. Two of us arrived first and sat at a table for four knowing our friend was to join us. We were asked to move to a table of two. When our friend arrived we were asked to move back to the table for four as pulling up a spare chair seemed unacceptable. We felt like we were a nuisance and that the staff were keen to move us out even though the cafe was empty. So disappointing. I chose this cafe as it is unique and small but it really does need to look at how it treats its customers. We did not feel welcome and will not return. Sad. .Coffee was ok.

We really enjoyed this place. We scoured the high-street to find somewhere that had a bit of individuality and character amongst the chain coffee outlets. We found it! There are a few seats downstairs in amongst the shop, but the main seating area is upstairs, see the picture at the top of the reviews. It has some lovely local art on the walls and a rather impressive chandelier, The view of the high-street is also a plus for the nosey (like me). It was a hot day and we had both eaten a BIG breakfast at the nearby Bell Inn, so we just wanted something light. I had a Victorian lemonade, which was a pleasant change from the usual lemonades one is served in chain places, my wife had a fresh juice. Both were excellent. We shared a Rocky Road Sundae, my word was it worth it! It came in a beautiful glass and was enormous, full of chocolatey goodness and lovely ice-cream. The service was friendly and although the waitress was new, she took the trouble to answer our questions in a detailed manner and was very polite and professional. We would highly recommend the tea room. Certainly one of the most characterful we encountered in Monmouth and the food quality was excellent.

we had been wandering around Monmouth when we happened upon this little tea room advertising home made scones and tea. My wife couldn't wait to taste them as she does everywhere we go. My wife ordered hers and asked if any of the cakes were dairy free for me. The lady was on the phone to the cook straight away to see if any were. We were in luck and both sat down for tea and cake. My wife commented that the scones were some of the best that she had tasted, As for my cake I had two slices it was so good, We tried to purchase the dairy free cake but I had the last of it. The owner then gave me the end piece for free as she said she could not sell the end bits. Most unexpected but accepted quickly. the trouble was I ate it before I got out of the shop. The tea room is very clean and well presented. The menu average but a good choice of home made cakes. Whilst I appreciate everything is freshly prepared, on the occasion I was there only one member of staff on duty and the wait was long just for two sandwiches, a pot if tea and a mocha. It would not have been so bad if the drinks had been served first instead of waiting for the sandwiches to be made. The prices reasonable and the unisex toilet downstairs at the back of the shop was clean and well presented.
