Lovely location could be a fantastic place. But... Sticky tables Disinterested staff Cook walked through and his trainers were not just grubby but filthy. Decided not to eat here. Cups don’t fit in saucers well so lots of drips and spills.

Visited Buxton for the week end and went in here for coffee and cakes. Downstairs was very full so went upsairs (there is a lift). Quite quaint and airy. Roof tereace not open as too cold. Ordered coffee, carrot cake, lemon drzzle cake and cinnamon and rasin scone. Perhaps a little slow but we were on holiday and in no hurry. All were very well presented by attentive and friendly staff. Spoke to the chef about one of the extra lines of jam(?) on the plates that we liked. Would certainly come again

...write a review of Charlotte's last Saturday . 5 of us including 2 small children found a table for 4 upstairs but were told by the waitress that we couldn't move another chair as it would impede access. 2 small children would not have taken up much room and the welcome wasn't friendly so we decided to leave.

We came to visit Buxton end of January 2020, we were too early to check in so went for a bite Upstairs at Charlotte's. I ordered creamed mushrooms with crusty bread and my partner had a latte. The dish was lovely but way overpriced, £10.45 for coffee and mushrooms 🤔 As much as I'd enjoyed it, I don't think I'd go there again.

Have visited numerous times before; thoroughly enjoyed sitting outside on the roof terrace in the summer and the main meals has always been great. That been said, the service has become lacking more and more through my last few visits. to the point that on today’s visit it was embarrassing. My friends and I all met through being waitress’ previously, so completely sympathise with some issues but, there was so much wrong. It was inexcusable. - We asked about the afternoon tea to be told they’d let us know (which took 15minutes and us re-asking). - Afternoon tea was a no, so we ordered mains and drinks. - We were brought food that wasn’t ours, before any drinks. - we were told our order was lost; bare in mind we had been in the restaurant nearly 25 minutes now... and we had to re-order everything again. - The drinks came separately with the first arriving 10minutes before the last. - had to send a drink back, as it was basically warm milk. -The mains arrived as always delicious and hot, hats off to whom ever works in the kitchen! - had to stop a waitress about desserts & more drinks - then had to ask for our dirty main dishes to be cleared. - scones arrived; 2 were lovely the other was i’d assume frozen then defrosted in the microwave, normally fine! But due to its size it had been overdone and became rock-hard on the edges to warm the middle. Had to stop another member of staff (owner?) to return. I was given a replacement rather quickly and that was perfect. The staff are young and they are clearly trying, so I’m not writing this to spite them. However I don’t think they’ve had any training or if they have, not enough! More communication and maybe a little more role placement(:one person preparing drinks, another taking orders etc. Instead of everyone trying to do every role). I’d say it’s a one off, but this has become a recurring theme over the last year. This being the worst by far and sadly after today, none of us will be returning.

The two young staff were friendly but untrained. After waiting ages despite only one other table occupied, I had to go and place our order for two cappuccinos, one without chocolate. Both came with chocolate. The "coffees" were lukewarm. There was a subdued coffee taste but in truth the overwhelming sensation was barely warm milk. Really horrid. Neither of us finished it. I don't blame the staff but the management . Paid and went - lesson learned; never go again.

The food we got on our plates was not the same as on the menu. We ordered fish finger butties 🥪on a brioche bun and got a very over cooked, breadcrumbed piece of white fish on a white bread bun. The cafe tries to be like a restaurant, for example, chocolates on a plate after the ‘meal’. The waiting on staff are a almost “gushing” in speaking with customers. Would give this small cafe a big miss. They try but miss the mark.

Located on the first floor of the Cavendish Arcade, in the converted baths, right in the heart of Buxton. The Cavendish is a great place to escape any bad weather (incl rain in my case) and Upstairs at Charlottes is a great place to sit and unwind for a drink and/or food. I was greeted in a very friendly way and offered any table. On a rainy Saturday at 11.30am there were a few empty tables but by 12 the place was full so its advisable to get here early for lunch or hope that you're lucky to get a table. They have tables inside and just outside on the balcony also, under the impressive stained glass roof. They offer gluten free and also vegan breakfasts on the menu as well as the traditional fayre. The coffee was delicious. They also offer decaff. Lovely experience, will be back!

As there was a lift upstairs to the cafe, I thought this would be a good spot for lunch whilst visiting with my Grandmother in a wheelchair - sadly this was not the case. There is a small gallery outside the lift with 3/4 tables which were not inside the main cafe. There is a step down into the cafe which made it not wheelchair friendly. We ended up blocking the entrance to the cafe and the stairs whilst trying to get seated with the wheelchair. As this gallery is outside the main cafe, the waiting staff seemed to forget we were there and I had to ask for a menu, to order, for the bill and nobody checked on us. The food order was also wrong when it arrived and overpriced.

Decided to pop in for a quick lunch whilst in the town. Yep, quite cosy if you manage to get a seat inside. Attention good, value good, service time fairly prompt even at a busy lunchtime. Loos ok. Only thing mitigating against it is the size - there aren't many tables in total and the staff seem to like choosing where you sit. They were apparently expecting a party to arrive and as tables were vacated they quickly cleared them and slapped a 'reserved' marker on them. No one turned up though. Perhaps we chose the wrong menu items but generally the portions were small and the price too high. Fish butty and chips for £8.95. There were about 8 chips in a ramekin. This is too expensive. The child's toasted sandwich is very small. And the fries we ordered really needed a few more minutes cooking. Also, the young staff although polite and friendly could be more attentive perhaps asking if we needed sauces etc. The cafe did have a nice atmosphere and apart from the fries the food was nicely cooked. However, surprisingly it was not good value for money. Other reviews would appear to disagree with this and maybe we caught the cafe on a bad day. All these issues are quite minor and easily rectified no doubt.

Thanks

The staff were friendly. My wife and I went in for coffees and a scone each. The gluten free scone was given to me rather than my wife despite asking (my wife is coeliac). My scone when this was sorted was like baked brown cardboard despite the sign outside that advertises their delicious scones. So bad it was inedible. So disappointed!

Visited with my friend Man Down for a late breakfast. We both ordered full English and coffees and didn't have to wait long for it to be served. Everything was well cooked and well presented. The sausages and bacon were excellent and were provided by the local butcher. The surroundings are light and airy and there is a spacious roof terrace for when the weather is good. We would definitely go again.

Called in for coffee mid morning they have two coffee areas on downstairs and one upstairs. We chose upstairs as there was more room. Friendly staff. Coffee and hot chocolate wonderful. Worth a visit.

Not at all impressed, overpriced food for the amount that we got, can only say that the tea was nice that was all, wish we had chosen somewhere else.

Being gluten intolerant and loving to travel can be a bit of an issue. However, happily this was not the case here as they had a lot of options. I was amazed at how tasty the gluten free scones were and so I went back...

Waited over an hour for food, when it eventually arrived it was over cooked and tasteless. Not a friendly atmosphere for a Country Pub.

Some reviews say staff are extremely pleasant, professional & kind to all customers, I did not find this today - so much so I won't go there again. I am usualy really keen to support all local businesses. Staff attitudes are really odd.

Banging classic village banter, and thumping 90s dance music, good ale and serves later than all other pubs in Whaley Bridge, exactly what a man needs after a busy shift. The bar maid is hot to trot too 🤪😎
