Absolutely love this traditional pub with an outside courtyard in the centre of Halifax. Great selection of drinks. Friendly staff. Good music. I would highly recommend 👍🏻

Out and about in Halifax with Madge. We made a bee line for this Greene King pub that features in the 2025 CAMRA Good Beer Guide. Easy to miss as the pub is hidden down a narrow alley. Only sell one or two of their own real ales, the other six or seven being guest ales. Heavy focus on Yorkshire breweries on our visit. Had a pint of Brew York 3.9% bitter. Madge a lager. Super traditional pub interior, lots of dark paneling. Rooms wrap around the central bar. Separate pool room. Lots of TV'S. Rear outdoor beer patio a little bleak. Cask Marque pub. Live music on Saturday nights.

Visited this place after seeing Korn, and OMG! It was amazing, so much ambience and good tunes, loved it! There was a massive party going on outside the pub, with a DJ playing music and people dancing. I did not get to see that much of the inside of this pub as it was great fun outside, but we loved the atmosphere here.

Amazing place, brilliant crisps, love Thursday night poker, staff are great and very friendly, very much recommend the Upper George to everyone

Only bar snacks it has taken 15 mins to be served but it is a jumper bar

Great little gem of a pub very old school pub feel wich is great. Great selection of drinks and music and has the georgefest each year wich is great atmosphere.

Walked in looking for somewhere to grab some food and a few drinks, waited at the bar. got ignored so we left.

Very aggressive manager, likes to shout in elderly women's faces about stuff he has no business being in, Plenty of people around at the time saw what he was like, getting in her face and going round to her place of work and shouting there. Very unprofessional, will be making an official report.

The Upper George is cunningly hidden down its own yard off Cheapside and is a surprising good ale house. Internally it is multiple spaces around the central bar area that you enter into including a separate “Raise your game” room housing a pool table. Traditional pub decor with flat screens in each section and the odd fruit machine dotted about. But a really good feature with this one was the spacious outside space to the front of the pub in the lane which was catching the midday sun and providing a very pleasant alfresco drinking space which made some of the southerners in our group think we were in Brighton, not Halifax. The bar supports two banks of four hand pumps and seven of these were in operation for our visits. It is a Greene Kings house but that was only evident by IPA and Old Golden Hen clips and the other five were dispensing three from Rudgate Brewery in the form of Viking Golden Ale, Astrid Summer Fruity ale and Valkyrie American Pale Ale and then Stancill Toms Mild and an excellent Bridgehouse Brewery Tequila Blonde. Really liked it here but then the sun did help enjoy the outside space.

First time here, went for the georgefest which was a free event with live music and bits to raise money for macmillan charity. There was a great atmosphere here all day and reasonably priced drinks.

The George are renowned for live music and for having the band's outside. I have been there many times and although they are not a big place they make the best with what they have. If you go to Halifax check it out if you can find it! Excellent for a great Yorkshire town!

I was only there for three pints but enjoyed it. Didn't realise you had a games night on. Not my usual venture midweek. I'm normally a Saturday afternoon person, looking for a quiet pub to chill out in. Yours is ideal.

not been in for years went in last night and really enjoyed -glad to say the layout hasnt changed at all -will deffo be going again.......went in again a week later and encountered the most miserable "barman" ever to wear shoe leather and to make it worse he hadn't a clue how to pour a pint and was competing with another barman to see who could do the least possible

Lively bar with music, prices not too bad. Definitely go back.

A Halifax institution! It's a standard pub, but with a lot of history. Add some live music into the mix and you've a cracking night out.

A pub that I can call my local, great staff, great friends, great service and banter. Poker on a Thursday night. I really should pop in more than once a week, but I love the Upper George.

Great pub in halifax tucked away up cobbled Road to back of pub. Friendly bar staff and spot on beer. A proper boozer. We're not local ,South Leeds but every time we go to halifax we make a point of paying a call after shopping. Always Friendly locals.

Terrific value on a Monday. 1.70 a pint . Nice friendly bar . We will certainly return. Shame we don't live closer .

Normally a good atmosphere with great music. Last came mid Tuesday afternoon so few in and little atmosphere. Bar staff were still great.

After a stressful day at the office I ended up in the Upper George, what an amazing stress reliever! The staff, the customers and the music all get a 10/10 from me! What an amazing family feeling, I have never felt more comfortable and safe in a pub than I did at the Upper George. Service with a smile is an absolute given and everyone is so lovely and helpful. I cannot think of a single negative thing to say about this pub. I am 1000000 percent going to make going a regular habbit both for the company of the people there whether its the staff or the other lovely customers and the outstanding low priced drink variety!

It's a great traditional pub which I've been frequenting since my misspent youth. Good music, rock DJ Brownie at the weekend. The beer is good and the staff are great, friendly and quick to serve at the bar. A shout out to Chris, who is lovely and always has a smile.

A fun and freindly little corner of halifax with a real tight nit sense of community with multiple clubs and activities such as the pool team,quiz and poker nights with a diverse range of staff such as chris who is always ready to help and at such Low prices whats not to love

I love the George but hate the umpteen noisy TVs it now has. It was always a pub with great music and conversation and now you can't hear yourself think for loud, competing sports programmes. Please make the George the great rock music pub it used to be!

Best place in my life. I was a French assistant in 1969. Still remember the girls. I returned several times. Fantastic people still live there and go to that pub!
