Excellent food didn’t have to wait too long 5* food n desserts where enjoyed by all a lovely family dining experience there

Our first visit to this pub/restaurant we brought our dog to get away from the noise of the fireworks as he is terrified. The pub was unusually quiet we were told which was a bonus for our dog. We cannot fault the food it was excellent from the starter through to dessert. The wine was reasonably priced and the staff were welcoming and friendly. We will definately be back, probably in the daytime where we can enjoy the views.

Had a really good meal today and went for the pie of the day. Chilli, cheese steak pie with chips, veg and gravy. The meal was really tasty and our waiter Lenny looked after us. Thanks for the great food and service!

We had such a great meal at the Shepherd’s rest. I had the beef brisket baguette, and the beef was excellent and the baguette fresh. The chips were also delicious. Our group had the surf and turf sharer board which was so good. Our experience was made so much better by the service from Lenny, who was friendly and attentive. We will definitely be back!

Nice welcoming pub and food was great and good to see an establishment being run without unnecessary Covid restrictions, back to normal 👍 unfortunately standards have changed since we last visited. Run out of food at 6pm and then claimed fully booked all night ? Outdoor menu consists of burger and chips options only now, but apparently they had run out of chips and burgers by 6pm ?? Advice would be to avoid now since changing hands, standards have definitely gone down. Plenty of other options now in Todmorden to have a nice relaxing meal. Lovely location but now spoilt, let's hope things improve.

Plus points - Great location, good selection. Beer on form, the young waitress was very good and when we asked if the 3 of us could move from cramped table in bar to the restaurant room she obliged. The restaurant room was half empty from time we went in till leaving so not sure why we weren’t placed there originally. Downside - the older waitress had long hair dangling down which wasn’t a hygienic look when swerving food. She was also wearing a long black k cardigan that looked like it had been rolled in a dogs basket. When she brought food she couldn’t tell difference between the beef or pork. When asked for horseradish there wasn’t any. When 3rd dish of sausage & mash arrived 5 minutes later there was no gravy but waitress did say she would bring some. A small gravy boat with a large chip in arrived. The Yorkshire’s, meat & mash were all barely warm, the meat was fairly bland & the roast potatoes were rock hard & the crackling looked like it was cremated. When asked if everything was ok our reply was it was ok. Didn’t bother looking g at puddings or ordering more drinks. Disappointing. Won’t be returning.

A group of four adults and one child. We hD the fish and chips deal, i had the burger and chips and the wife had chilli and rice. No complaints from them and the burger which is not usually my cup of tea was delicious, having to undo my top button as i ate too much because is was so nice rather than being hungry. The staff were great and colouring books for the daughter. Very happy

I won a competition for the sharing Sunday Yorkie board , the sharing board was beautiful all food piping hot and the meat in the wraps just melted in your mouth . Kids meals were perfect too . Staff lovely and very helpful, 100% recommend to anyone .

We came up from Wigan in our campervan after reading reviews that they allowed overnight stays in vans if you eat drink here . We had the most amazing meal , and can’t applaud the young man enough that served us , such a polite professional person , Thankyou ! We was cycling the day after so we did move our van onto the road as I’ve didn’t want to take the mick 😉 places like this are little gems and wouldn’t want to ruin it . we went back for a coffee on return . Sunday lunches looked amazing !! But sadly we couldn’t stay . Definitely next time 😁

Absolutely Superb. Been here a couple of times now and it never disappoints. The menu has something for everyone and there is a great selection to choose from. When we visited (Friday) there was a burger board special on. I think there were four different burgers to choose from. We went for the crispy chicken burger and beef burger. Hands down they were the best burgers we’ve ever had. The chicken was crispy and succulent and the beef burger was just the right thickness and high quality. We are very fussy, but all boxes were well and truly ticked! The previous visit was also a fantastic experience which is why we went back. The staff were very friendly and attentive. They have a great selection of wine and cask ales. The prices are very reasonable too. The views in the restaurant area are breathtaking and far reaching. There is a very well equipped garden area which also has the same views. There is a lovely walk up to Stoodley Pike, which we have done twice now before finishing off with a lovely meal and drinks in the Shephards Rest. We’ve only been so far in summer but it did look like they had a fire in the bar area which I would imagine is great in the winter months. The prices were very reasonable and we were all incredibly happy. We are all looking forward to our next visit. A true hidden Gem, defo on our must list.

Wonderful place. Food is amazing. No lie, it’s the best burger I’ve ever had. I left very full. The staff were wonderful and make you feel very welcome. The only thing is I would prefer a paper menu rather than a QR code but everything else was perfect. I look forward to returning. 😁

Absolutely beautiful location with fantastic views. Lovely outside seating area to soak in the views.The pub is well maintained and very clean. Staff absolutely lovely and pleasant even though they were run off their feet . Literally! Food was lovely too. Meatballs were very tasty and I made the starter as a main by adding chips and a salad. 2 perfect steaks cooked to perfection. Excellent valie for money and super service. Beautiful views from the restaurant . We even had permission to stay on the car park in our camper can so was able to enjoy a few drinks . An absolutely brilliant start to our holiday.

Great country pub. Great beer, fish & chips.

Refused to take cash as payment which seemed bizarre. Though it was scottish notes but even so, no reason to refuse. Staff were very apologetic at least and the beer was good.

Called for tea on way back from a walk at Hardcastle Crags. Booked a table. Place was virtually empty, probably due to England playing in the Euros. Didn't get off to a good start, no ham hock terrine (my choice) no mushy peas (?) no steak and onion pie, no lemon for my water (really, surely the kitchen would have some) The menu isn't extensive so to have a staple like steak pie missing was a bit bizarre. Anyway, food was ordered, it arrived and was excellent. I couldn't understand why there was a different menu for outside, but hey ho.

Came here for a family lunch. Managed to get seated even though we were a party of 9 (plus a dog) with no reservation! Food was amazing, had good variety of drinks and v reasonably priced. Highly recommend

I visited with friends today for a Sunday roast and a walk up Gaddings Dam afterwards (just over the road). Everything about the roast was perfection, we all really enjoyed it. The best cauliflower cheese I’ve ever had!! We came back for deserts after the walk, I had the homemade oreo cheesecake - I recommend you try it. Very friendly staff and great service. Thank you for a lovely meal!! We will be back soon :)

We held our little boy’s christening meal here and had the most amazing time; the food and the service were second to none! I cannot thank the venue enough for going above and beyond to make sure our little man’s day was super special. We can’t wait for an excuse to return soon. 🥰

Excellent food,freshly cooked,great beer garden,dog friendly

Went with our adult daughter and grandson for a lovely lunch. The sea bass with the accompaniments was excellent, fish skin crispy and perfectly cooked, roasted potatoes with a bit of crispy edges, butternut squash purée silky smooth, slaw with a very tasty dressing, and edible flowers adorning the plate! Fish and chips had a huge piece of fish cooked well. The cheese pie was substantial with a lot of vegetables and chips on the side. Other than a bit of a wait for the food it was all great. Wine prices by the bottle are very well priced. Wish we had room for dessert!

Went on Sunday for Pizza with the kids great pizza and play area, at the moment it's cash only but we knew about that from a previous visit. Definitely recommend and will be back.

If I could give the food 12 stars, I would! Visited for a Sunday roast… actually, I lie. We visited for the Yorkshire pudding wrap special they do on Sunday but we stupidly didn’t pre-order and they knocked us back, so we settled for Sunday roast instead. Let me tell you… It was the second best Sunday roast I’ve ever had (my mums is the first and if she sees this and I’m telling people someone else’s roast is better than hers, she’ll take my head off!) We both had pork and it was succulent. Everything was a good temperature. The plate was hot. The only gripe I had was the gravy was a little bit thin for my liking, but it was still beauts. That is my picture, I know it looks edited to within an inch of its life, buts it’s not! Even I was shocked when I took it!

Food amazing but if you want a pie at weekends..call ahead and reserve! It takes 45 mins for pies but they do tell you at booking Was slow service but that's also because it was great weather so packed and the bar was a bit chaotic... 2 queues and no one sure where to go

I’m a support worker and this evening I took a service user to the shepherds rest, the food was lovely and the staff were amazing! Dave, James and Nicola waiting on us on our every need and were so attentive to his needs. They all interacted very well with him and were so patient, will be taking him back for definite !

All great. Staff attentive and warm, food fab after a long walk, beer good but more craft beers would be better. All in all a great experience

The mighty burger board was mahoosive. The gammon steak & cod & chips were very, very tasty. Plenty seating inside & out. Absolutely stunning views. Definitely a place to return to.

Can not fault this place. I've been to many many pubs with stop overs for campers and motorhomes and this one tops them all. They know exactly how to run an establishment such as this. The service is 10/10. The staff are very polite and always got a smile, which is hard to keep a smile in this world at the minute. I was served by a blonde woman who I think is either the owner or in charge, she is lovely and delight to be around. The food is brilliant, I had the butter milk chicken burger and the bun and everything was spot on with a brilliant combination of sauces, the chicken it's self was done in home made crispy batter and the chips are perfect, just how chips should be, nice and crunchy, I think they were triple cooked. I also have had a Yorkie board with my girlfriend and man, that was some really good food! The coliflower cheese is to die for. The beef was so soft and could tell it's been cooking for at least 15 hours, pork and stuffing was brilliant, gravey nice and thick, Yorkshires perfected & the roast potatoes nice and crunchy with some softness in the middle. Prices are very reasonable, probably the most reasonable prices around. Everything is home made. Thankyou for serving me a perfect meal and a nice atmosphere to let your hair down (if I had any). Oh and I can't forget the tall lad on the bar, a great guy so so polite and couldn't do enough for you. The owner is really nice and takes the time to talk to you, keeping the place clean and hoovered!.

Not good for larger numbers of diners - took 1 hour 15 mins before starters arrived. The main course came and two people had to wait a further 8 minutes for theirs to arrive (that was after someone asked how was our food). The vegetables finally arrived when everyone had finished their meals! We ordered deserts only to then be told there were limited choices, then when we ordered someone came back and said they had run out of more so we had to choose again. Highlight of the day was when the waiter dropped the yorkshire pudding on the table while serving and just picked it up with his fingers and put back on the plate. Seriously needs more organisation/more staff. I dont think anyone over-sees the large tables? - this was pre-booked not a turn up at last minute. Shame as food 5 star, the place is squeeky clean and staff well presented just the service was POOR and seemed to take FOREVER.

Great food, excellent wine list and great beers. Everything is excellent quality. The halloumi fries starter and pies mains were standout. Recommend you book the Yorkshire Platter if you want that, we were too late, but there was plenty on the menu we could enjoy

Absolutely brilliant pub! Try the famous Yorkshire wraps - you won't be disappointed. Outside is ample parking, covered beer garden and children's play area. Stunning views across the valley and on to Stoodley Pike.

Slow service however the food was well worth the wait, absolutely outstanding.

Was in there a couple of days ago and a mix up with the online booking, but the staff were brilliant and re-organised and squeezed 6 of us in 😃 . Food was excellent and york pudds were enormous, but good portions, nice session ale and lovely Bank hols buzzy atmos. Defo recommend 👌 👍

Returned from Gaddings Dam to a warm welcome and lovely lunch. The shepherds pie was a real treat. We didn't park in the grounds as requested but were told of course we could if calling in for food/refreshments. Was a birthday trip for the 31yr old but his daughter wants to return for her birthday next month...

This was the second time we’ve eaten at this fantastic restaurant, there were 9 of us so as expected a short wait for the food which we hardly noticed as drinks were served immediately & of course gave us time to chat. We had Sharing boards, pies, burgers between us , the quality of the food was exceptional, every meal was perfect. The staff were amazing, really friendly & very attentive. Well worth our 2 hour drive to get there, can’t wait to go again.

We had a wheelchair with us, and gained easy flat access into the restaurant area. The staff were most accommodating getting us into place. There was plenty choice on the menu including vegetarian options. The fish and chips was perfect. As Arnie once said "I'll be back..."!

I try to visit whenever I’m up in Calderdale visiting my daughter. Everything you would want in a country pub - and we’ve managed to do several walks over the years that fortunately ended up at the Shepherds Rest. Views, food, beer, atmosphere, staff - all top notch.

Visited today after booking lunch the day before , not many people in, anyway given a choice or where to sit and chose a window table to make the most of the sunshine. Our drinks order was delivered promptly as was the food ordered from the lunch menu, 2 for £15, the portions were generous, well presented and enjoyable. We found the staff to be personable and attentive and the chef asked if everything was okay. All in all a good experience and we will definitely be visiting again.

I have been looking forward to some food here and it didn't let me down had Sunday roast and sticky toffee pudding. The food was top notch 👌 and the service was just as good as the food . FYI book online for a table Sunday is busy coz food was that good. Will be going back for there Yorkshire Sunday wrap 👌

Simply brilliant. Food was great, lovely atmosphere looking over the hill but all this is still surpassed by the great service. Sadly paid on card, had no cash and couldn't tip, the only downside!

If you’re looking for a welcoming public house with polite staff. Keep on driving and avoid this place. To say the staff were rude and unfriendly is an understatement especially Declan . If it food you’re looking for then they absolutely can’t accommodate that. I have honestly never been in a more unpleasant establishment. Luckily there is a much more welcoming and friendly public house not to far away (The Waggon and horses) Who are more than happy to serve food and all staff are very pleasant with a welcoming smile.

Amazing guiness Bad points Food was cold Forgot to bring cutlery, making cold food even colder Forget to take drinks included in the burger board price off the bill until told. Not enough chips, a small small handful, non existent salad on the £23 surf and turf board. Not worth it at all. A really nice steak but 5 prawns. A long wait for food.

Had lunch here yesterday for my Husband's Birthday. Food was amazing and would highly recommend Chicken and chorizo in white wine sauce. Staff were very friendly and helpful and the views are stunning. Will be recommending to all my friends and family. Could not fault anything and will definitely be returning 😊

Was here yesterday everything was okay at the meal but today I’ve got very bad food poisoning I’m assuming it’s from the Cumberland sausauge I ate soon as I’m the only one with it I’ve been being sick all night and have not got of the toilet all day paid 110 pound for this what an absolute delight👍👍👍 plus they now barley have anything on the menu what pub doesn’t do a hunters chicken used to love it from there gone downhill😤 And to your reply well your gunna deny it anyway arnt yous I know what food poisoning is and that is definitely what I have thanks allot for the food poisoning 110 pound week spent NOT

We visited for a Birthday meal and it was fabulous! The staff were absolutely lovely and the food was delicious. We will definitely be making another visit soon to try the Sunday roast board! Delicious all round, thank you very much for a lovely meal.

Never been before but had a fantastic lunch with my partner and his son (8). Food was really good, nice portion sizes and very tasty. Told at ordering stage that one of our mains would take a little longer so were happy to wait and opted to add a shared starter to 'put us on.' Staff were pleasant and friendly. Good general atmosphere, lots of walkers and dog walkers in the bar with their 4 legged friends. We ate in the bar area as the gallery was already full (we hadn't booked a table but probably a good idea - the views from the gallery restaurant were brilliant). Paid just over £60 for a starter, childs main, 2 adult mains and drinks, which I thought was reasonable. I really enjoyed our visit and would definitely go again.

I had the steak and onion pie was really good ( bit of a wait but worth it.) my partner had the burger and he loved it( believe me he's fussy! ). Shared the baileys cheesecake Lovely. We were staying in the area and got recommended this place to eat. We thought we were lucky to get a table on a Saturday, but they managed to fit us in, which was great. However, the food let this place down big time. My husband ordered the steak pie and myself the burger. We got advised that the pie would take about 40 mins, so we took the risk expecting to have extraordinary food. After 1 hour we had to chase up where the food was, then it was another 5 mins before it arrived, we also ordered drinks which we had to chase up too. The pie was mediocre and certainly not worth the wait and the burger was so dry and tasteless and the chips were undone. We was both left really disappointed with the food especially after the such long wait. When the waitress came over to ask how everything was, we told her what was wrong and she said that she would take the burger off the bill which we thanked her for, then when another person came over (maybe the manager) he said he was going to take 10% off, then changed his mind to take 2 of our drinks off, which was equivalent to about £6. And he even said that the chef knew that food wasn't upto standard, so why send it out. We honestly just wanted to get out especially after the such long wait. We both left disappointed and probably won't return for food unfortunately The atmosphere is lovely and the staff were friendly and welcoming. But just beware of potentially long waits for food

What a spot! Beautiful location which is topped off with amazing friendly staff who go above and beyond to make you feel welcome. Food is of equal standard and it’s so lovely to be able to take your dogs in and feel totally at ease - there’s even a treat jar above the fire. Perfect pub in a perfect spot. The new owners really are doing a brilliant job. Will definitely be back.

Haven’t been for a while but popped in for lunch at the weekend. Drinks: Pint of very well kept Tim Taylor. No decaff cappuccino which was disappointing but on the upside, a great range of alcohol free drinks. Food: Halloumi burger was lovely. Plenty of halloumi, super coleslaw (would have preferred more kick with the sriracha but that’s personal taste). Good fries and lovely salad. Shepherds Pie with veg. Simply beautiful. And by a mile the tastiest one I’ve ever had. Lovely, smooth creamy mash piped on top of wonderfully seasoned lamb. Stunning. We will definitely be back. Hopefully there’ll be decaff cappuccino 😉

Lovely pub in a gorgeous location huge beer garden for the summer. Beautiful food recommend pre booking as always busy. Our Yorkie board came cold unfortunately but never had any other issues. Still would have it again just ensure they serve it hot!!
