Union Inn in Torridge

We went to the Union in on Saturday the 14th Dec for an evening meal with freinds from Birmingham, who were staying at Shebbear . The atmosphere was frindly and the staff helpfull . The menue is really good and I said to my wife we must come back again soon to try some of these other meals . Two of us went for the specials item of lamb steak and chips with all the trimmings onion rings, tomatoes, mushrooms ( realy tasty mushrooms ) peas and loads and loads of delicious chips . We were stuffed ! No room for deserts I'm affraid . We have been here before and had the lovely sunday roast take aways as we only life at Frithelstock stone . We really recomend this pup . We experienced the Christmas Meal which was cooked well and presented with some style. The Glazed Salmon was particularly tasty. For us, the choice of wine is very limited, however, this is a country pub whose customers preferred taste is good beer. Service at The Union is warm and welcoming. A great place to eat if you have a healthy appetite!

Great find for Sunday lunch. Four of us friends spending a few days in the area. The choice was roast lamb or roast beef . We tried both. Absolutely delicious . Everything piping hot. We received a lovely welcome. One of our group had enough space for pudding. Crumble and custard . Again, delicious.

It doesn't look much from the outside but inside a very friendly barman, a full menu...clean & tidy, well cooked food for a decent price.

The Sunday roast is really outstanding and well worth it. Service was fantastic and prompt. Can definitely recommend.

I booked The Union Inn last minute and was not disappointed. It's a pub which serves food rather than a restaurant so may not suit everyone. My wife had a Liver dish, and I had Pork Belly which was both excellent and followed by a Knickerbocker Glory. The Barman was very welcoming and made you feel relaxed.

Great atmosphere, great host and great food. Lovely meal for 4 of us from starters through to dessert. Portions were huge and food was lovely and very reasonably priced. Lots of menu choice to suit everyone. Host fantastic. Very enjoyable evening, Hoping to squeeze in another visit before we leave.

Went for an evening meal with an eclectic mix of grandchildren, 8 of us in total. It’s a lovely locals pub with a warm welcome for visitors. Great food, good value. We will be back when next in the area. This has now become our go to establishment when down this way.

Just wanted some good old fashioned pub grub and that is exactly what we got. Gammon, egg and pineapple, etc. Freshly cooked, tasty and piping hot. Super friendly banter from Nigel behind the bar. Fair prices too. So good that we went back again at the end of the week.

The welcome you receive is friendly and second to none, the excellent choice of juice/alcohol or none alcohol I will suit any one and the varied meal choice and then the “specials” are not to be beeten, then compare the cost/price EXCELLENT AND 5 STAR

Food was excellent had hunters chicken and my wife had the liver and bacon. She said it was the best liver she had for ages so we went back the second night and we both had the liver. The apple crumble was lovely. The staff were helpful and polite

Probably the best steak I have ever eaten. Usually stay clear of steaks in pubs but this was amazing. Wife had slow cooked beef which she said was delicious. Staff also brilliant. Going there again soon.

Very warm welcome by the great barman, good choice of food and served in good time.All three of us didn't have anything to complain about the food, 3 clean plates sent back to the kitchen. Barman kept a eye on us but not over intrusive. All around a very good evening was had by all.

We were well received and warmly welcomed (mainly to make us aware of the steps into the building from the rear entrance). We were forewarned that the meals were hearty so did not have a starter. Scampi (with a half portion of chips); Liver and Bacon with veg and new potatoes and a Crispy Chilli Beef with Rice were ordered. It was nice to take the time and look around at the old photos and people watch as they arrived. Our food arrived and all commented that it looked good. Two of us shared a Spotted Duck with custard which was lovely and light. Upon exiting we were made aware of the New years breakfast and also the leaflets for places to visit. Called in for a drink and a meal on our way back from RHS Rosemoor. We received a friendly welcome and ordered drinks whilst perusing the menu. We both went for different meals from the specials board which were very nice. The pub has a good atmosphere and friendly staff, will definitely use it again.

What a lovely friendly place. We had a family meal for 12, 8 adults and 4 children. They attended to the kids first which I thought was a lovely gesture. The food was excellent, great service and couldn’t do enough for us. We had been visiting the area for the weekend and this place made the trip worthwhile. Brilliant local pub with great service, great food and great beer. Went on spec on a busy Thursday early evening. Nothing was too much trouble and we were treated like regular customers.

This is a little gem of home cooked top quality very tasty food cooked to perfection & served in a homely manner in a traditional Devon village pub. Portions aren't huge but how refreshing to find a traditional pub that concentrates on quality instead of quantity, the wait is explained by the fact that they cook to order by a chef that knows his abilities supremely well & who cooks food to perfection. Me n my son had the lamb Sunday roast & everything was done to perfection, the lamb was tender, proper cauliflower cheese where u could taste proper mature cheddar in the cheese sauce, veggies that still had a bit of bite, homemade yorkies, crispy roasties n proper gravy made from the roast lamb meat juices that tasted of home cooked roast lamb. My dessert was apple n black forest fruit crumble with proper clotted cream topped with a proper buttery crunchy crumble topping, our food was served by a relaxed friendly young waiter. My lunch was accompanied by a perfect pint of DOOMBAR, my son had a perfect pint of GREENE KING IPA served by a very good young barmaid. This is a pub that cooks food with its customers in mind resulting in a traditional Devon village pub with a proper friendly welcoming homely atmosphere. A pub like this with a great home cooked from scratch menu served by great staff is what every traditional village pub should aspire to be like, we're going again on Thursday for another taste of perfection. If you're ever in TORRINGTON in DEVON don't miss this oasis of great home cooked food, if I could give more than 5 stars I would and it would be richly deserved!!!

First night on holiday staying nearby. Quite busy but booked a table. Host very friendly and welcoming. Beer good and food great. Had fish pie and steak and ale pie. Both very good Too full for puds.

Great welcome from the staff, quick service and amazing food!!! The portions are large, I couldn't finish mine, but it was delicious!!! If we were in the area again we would definitely come back!!!

Went for a family meal for 9 of us including 5 children of varying ages, including one grandson who has autism and is hyperactive. We were made to feel very welcome by pub staff and customers alike, and we were particularly impressed with the efforts made to ensure our grandson enjoyed his visit. We had 9 dinners with 9 puddings and all clean plates, which speaks volumes for the food, which was enjoyed by all. We will definitely return when we are next in the area.

This is an excellent inn with great local sourced food at good prices. We have been before and it has been great very time, highly recommended.

Having arrived in the area for a few days we called on the off chance there was room for us in this pub/restaurant. Luckily they managed to squeeze us in and we had a lovely meal. Steak pie and the scampi came promptly, served by friendly servers and tasted delicious. Despite the temptation of a scrummy sounding dessert, we could eat no more!!! Very good value and great atmosphere.

I made the booking over the phone and left a message on the answer machine. The booking was taken and we arrived early. A very friendly welcome from the owner and regulars the beer was good and reasonably priced. A good selection of meals on the menu including curry, pie, sweet and sour chinese, fish and a good selection of meals for children. The portions were huge, including the sides and it was impossible to eat everything. We will definately go again when in the area. An excellent evening. Thank you

This place is a country pub that do's great priced pub food and homely as well, from fish and chips to good old pie as well. I had a great meal in here and the price was great as well. Recommend if near to the pub at the crossroads it was great.

We visited for lunch last Tuesday while on holiday in the area. Service was good. Unfortunately we were the only ones in the pub at the time so it was lacking in atmosphere but I can only assume this is because it was lunchtime rather than evening. My husband ordered the lamb hotpot and vegetables and it was so good he tipped the plate up to drink the remaining gravy from his plate. I asked for the fish burger but they didn’t have any so I ordered the Bigfoot sausage in a baguette with onions and chips instead and that was fine. We played a couple of games of pool before leaving and were pleasantly surprised to find the games only cost 50p.

We popped in for dinner at The Union Inn on our travels from cornwall to Bristol with our son. We were all made to feel at home by the friendly staff and enjoyed a great dinner: in particular the burger and chips were really good. Will certainly stop in again when we are next passing.

Staying local with family we decided to give this pub a try and we were not disappointed. It doesn't look the best from the outside but go in and give it a try as the staff are very friendly, the service was really good and the food was excellent! Especially the Fish Pie, there was so much fish in the pie, it came with lots of fresh veg and was pipping hot! Equally the Lamb Hot Pot, Liver & Bacon and Hunters Chicken was so good. I booked for a party of 6 to enjoy a meal on Father’s Day. The food was super. Service was super and we received a very warm welcome. We all had different dishes and all very satisfied with the quality and quantity.

Staying locally with friends and called in here for a meal. Very quiet ( Tuesday evening ) but lovely young lady waiting served a very good meal (Beef and Guinness pie, Cod special and rump steak medium rare as requested ) all at a reasonable price.

Visited the Union Inn whilst on a long weekend away in Devon. Absolutely superb. The inn has been recently been refurbished and is very smart. Excellent menu and the food was to a high standard and piping hot and very reasonable prices. Wasn't very busy the night we went but the very pleasant barman said this was unusual. Will definitely go back next time we're down in Devon next.

We booked the table for 6pm but arrived at 6:30pm so we're happy to wait as the barman advised a party of 6 would be ahead of us. After 90 mins ourselves nor the party of 6 still had no food and the barman simply stated "that he could not give a timeframe" 15 mins later the starter arrived, garlic bread and 15 mins later the food arrived. Is 2 hours a reasonable wait? No apology, no explanation and altogether a simply bad experience

Parked outside in the large carpark, got the 2 dogs out to go enjoy a pint & a bite to eat, one foot in the door. Greeted with NO DOGS ALLOWED MATE.

Visited this pub last week and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We both opted for the beef curry from the specials board. Unfortunately the gentleman came back to us and said there was only one beef curry left, we were offered a lamb curry or a chicken curry, or to have another look at the menu. I opted for the lamb curry. When the food arrived both dishes were very nice, tasty, hot and presented nicely.

Just left after a lovely meal tonight great food friendly staff and massive portions thoroughly enjoyed :-)

On a week's holiday touring north Devon, the traffic was kind to us on our first day and we arrived earlier than expected. We had time for lunch before shop closing so consulted my pre-prepared list of pub contenders for a Sunday roast venue. Called to book an hour or so ahead and pleased we did as the pub was crowded and we were shown to the only unoccupied table. An unassuming village pub full of locals. Nice beer. Nice atmosphere.

Been here to eat a few times in the last year and it's always good. Every time the food is very tasty and a good size portion. Good atmostsphere and the owners and bar staff are friendly! Very good value for money!

We came across this pub as we were driving around trying to find our bearings (as well as grub!) A little apprehensive initially as the entrance did not look too inviting and looked like it was full of locals. We decided to take the plunge and eat there. We are so glad we did! Food was great and there was plenty of it too. Very reasonably priced for the quality and quantity. The staff were really lovely and friendly too.

Enjoyed two evening meals here with family and friends whilst camping in Little Torrington. The food was all freshly cooked, very tasty and the large portions kept us heartily filled and warmed!!!

Sin embargo no volvería otra vez a menos que dejó sus precios, ya que no había ambiente, y estaba vacío, aparte de un habitual. El precio de un curry y medio de lager era casi £11 que es muy caro para este tipo de lugar. El horario de pub es muy pragmático, con decoración típica y una mesa de billar, el único aspecto de categoría es que las placas son de color blanco y plaza, pero este no justifica la gastro-precios pub.

Mi marido y yo visitamos este pub en 7 de mayo, después de visitar Devon para una reunión familiar. Estábamos disfrutando de un coche en el glorioso campo de devon, cuando nos encontramos con este pueblo tradicional. Nos saludó muy sonriente y acogedor personal detrás de la barra y pedí un asado los domingos. El ambiente en el pub era amable y la comida era maravillosa, tuvimos una mezcla de carne de cerdo asado y chispeante, rebozadas, increíble, el mejor patatas asadas que he probado en mucho, mucho tiempo, budín de Yorkshire, coliflor, queso, col, zanahorias y salsa de financiarlo adecuada fue un buen inicio la cena! El servicio era estupendo, agradable personal y la comida, con 2 refrescos y 2 precioso café con chocolate con menta, vino a £24 - excelente relación calidad-precio. Aunque vivimos en Cambridge, estamos en la zona frecuentemente durante todo el año y este será nuestro nuevo pub "Ir a" en el futuro.

Un pequeño pub con un jardín de cerveza. Tenía la carne en un 6 oz roll ciabatta con patatas fritas. Buena relación calidad-precio y muy sabroso. Muchos chips para mí. También tenía su maltratada aros de cebolla que caseros eran enormes y sabrosos. Comidas para niños eran buenas y el pollo goujons parecía puro de mama y grande y no grasienta. Owners are very uppity. Did not enjoy the place or atmosphere. I wouldn't recommend to family, friends or passers by.

This is a country pub that is friendly and welcoming, the beer is good, the food is not fast food but is well prepared and very tasty, the service is very good nothing was to much trouble. This was a mid-week visit and the place was full of locals having a great night, it had a very friendly atmosphere and was very welcoming, which was nice as i was 300 miles from home and will revisit on my next trip to that area.

Myself and my young family visit this family run pub frequently. Sunday lunch is almost our weekly treat! Claire and Matt are so friendly, welcoming and accommodating to the children. The portions are huge, and we can never fit in a pudding! We also occasionally visit after school on a week night and try the ever changing specials menu- the homemade curries are always wonderful, and the cheesecake is to die for! The beer garden is sunny and great for the kids to run around in!Claire and Matt also offer takeaways, and the Stibb Stack burger travels extremely well!They regularly have live music, bingo and special themed evenings. Try this lovely pub if you are a fan of homemade English pub food cooked beautifully in a warm and welcoming environment.

The young couple who own and manage this pub are often helped by their parents :) It is a warm and friendly, welcoming pub with great food ; excellent service with a smile :) We have been back since our first visit and plan to enjoy a sunday lunch in October with friends :) Looking forward to this lunch :)

I know this pub very well having eaten and drank there on many occasions during the 5 years it has been under it's present ownership. It is an excellent establishment run my a young and energetic couple determined to provide the best quality food, drink and ambiance to both locals and visitors alike. Being local to the area myself I know many of the suppliers of the locally sourced ingredients used, including meat from undoubtedly the best butchers this area has to offer, and their vegetables are always extremely fresh and of top quality. I would highly recommend.

When you enter you have are greeted by a heavvy smell of frying. You keep on because it is time to have a lunch for our young boy. You sit on a sticky table close to a converted fireplace, with plastic logs. In fron of me the other only two guests, with a lady licking her fingers on every single chip. The best we had were the mash potatoes. Rotted salad, heavvy chips and meal. Low quality colesaw. Very sad for this experience.

Visited last week whilst on holiday with friends, for drinks in the beer garden..we liked the atmosphere and the menu looked good so we returned the night after for our evening meal. The food was lovely, we were all happy with our choices and thought the portions were generous and good value. Service was good and the staff were friendly, polite and happy to be attentive. We visited this pub last weekend whilst staying at a cottage a mile or two up the road. We were very glad that we did. The food was brilliant - well cooked and generous portion sizes, with a large selection. The staff were very friendly and all too happy to help, and we were served promptly even with 14 of us eating.

Came here last year after a dog walk, and had the most amazing roast, very homely and tastey!We had some friends down so decided to do the same walk and go for a roast, front of house as friendly as ever, very welcoming but the food was very bland and grey. No flavour and just really dissapointing!
