I have been three times now in the last two weeks. And every time I have thought " do they think we are secret shoppers ?" The service is so attentive without being oppressive . The staff are smiley welcoming and so helpful . We need gluten free for some of us and some need dairy free . The chef is very accommodating. The food is gorgeous and the helpings are very ample . The staff treated us like royalty . Definitely will be back time and time again . Gluten free fish and chips are hard to find . But I loved the sea bass too succulent melt in your mouth fish with buttery chive mash . And fresh vegetables . Just need soya milk now for my latte and I will be in love ❤️

Visited the unicorn inn for Sunday lunch and I have to say it was delicious. I chose the lamb which was cooked to perfection, came with roast potatoes, stuffing, a large Yorkshire pudding, there was a selection of fresh vegetables put on the table for us all to share which was plenty. a little pricey for Sunday lunch compared to some for example the Toby carvery but it was well worth the extra money. Will be returning soon and would highly recommend thankyou :)

Use to go to Unicorn years ago so was keen to call in after seeing signs it had been refurbished. Just stopped for a drink and was disappointed to see it is still scruffy, inside, maybe outside had been done up a bit.

Went for a meal as some people said it had gone really nice. The decor is really scruffy and old. I appreciate its a really old pub but the carpet looks filthy and we seen what appeared to be a rat trap under the seat! The food itself was very average. I paid 24 pounds for a steak but I couldnt eat it as it was more fat than meat and it smelt of fat. My friend had the curry and said it was nice but the chips could have done with a bit longer. I hope they invest more in the decor and clean the place up as its in a nice spot. The toilets could do with a bit of attention too.

Recently “modernised” by improving outside seating areas. Providing bumpy castle for children. After a few drinks we decided to eat an evening meal indoors. We were superbly looked after by Belle and Ava . We really enjoyed our selection of starters provided and prepared by an excellent chef - Sean, so much so that we asked if we could thank him face to face afrewards.

We hadn't been to the Unicorn for a couple of years, it was too drab and dreary, and we found it unfriendly tbh. So as it's now under new management - we gave it another try - and lasted about 40 minutes. The seating area outside has been changed - so it looked promising when we arrived but as soon as we entered the pub we were greeted with the usual stares from the locals (far too cliquey) and the same drab, dreary decor. There are definitely no frills in this pub. No frills, and no atmosphere (it was Saturday night) We had our drinks and left, went to the pub next door for the rest of the evening.

I was encouraged to go after reading some of the other reviews suggesting the food was good. Firstly the staff were very friendly and attentive . The pub is old and as a result is fully of character and that well worn aroma that accompanies old carpets and fixtures. Sadly the food was poor. The chill prawn started at approximately £10, was particularly disappointing with 5 basic prawns sprinkled with chopped chilli on a smear of warm mayonnaise, that proceeded to seep it's oil off the edge of the warm slate that it was served on...the main course was no better. a curry with an abundance of orange and quite tasteless sauce. Its an old pub due to have a refurbishment it the coming months, I hope the refurbishment includes the menu and the quality of what's produced.

Probably the worst food we have ever eaten. I got the fish and chips, took one bite and gagged. I have never walked out of a restaurant before but I had to go before I was sick. Got home and threw up so not sure whether the fish was off but absolutely would not recommend the fish and chips! My boyfriend got the pie and said that wasn’t great either. We don’t like to complain so didn’t say anything in the restaurant as to be honest I was about to be sick so wanted to get out of there. I rang up once home and alls they said was ‘thanks for letting me know’ so I don’t think they were too bothered! 😂

Haven't been In this place for years . I was passing and thought I'd pop in for old times sake .. so glad I did . It was almost as I remembered it from nearly 44 yrs ago ! Lovely oak beams and carvings in the grain . The memories came flooding back in the brief time I was there . Many thanks to the very nice , chatty and polite barmaid ( I think she said her name was Donna ) , who filled me in with a little of the history of the place and of the upcoming refurbishment . I really hope they do this place justice and not just do what other pubs and chains do , and rip the heart and soul out of the place . I love the interior of this pub .. it just oozes character ! I won't leave it so long next time . See you soon hopefully Donna ! 👍

Great to see a local pub return to its old quality. Went back to the Unicorn after a while as it was under new management. Welcome and service was superb. Timothy Taylor Landlord was excellent again with Dan behind the bar a brilliant host. Food was very good with the triple cooked chips a reminder of 20 years ago when they were the talk of the area. Cabernet Sauvignon washed down the steak pie a treat with all our meals being very well cooked. Great value as well really great to have the Unicorn as an option again.

Always used to visit but have not been for a while As always a great traditional warm friendly pub atmosphere The staff, especially Dan the manager, were very friendly and efficient despite being rather short staffed that evening. Food has improved and is wonderful - they seem to have got a proper chef in the kitchen and the quality and range has improved dramatically. I had Mushrooms on Bruchetta with garlic (sorry about the spelling!) and it was wonderful - lots of mushrooms of different types and lots of garlic but not overpowering. The RibEye steak was by far the tenderest and tastiest that I have had for a long time. My wife had the beef stroganoff and I tried the sauce which was also wonderful pudding were also great Overall it is now one of the best places for food in the area and still the same lovely warm atmosphere.

Called in on the off chance last Saturday evening looking for a quick tea because everywhere was packed with long waits and ended up staying for hours. We haven't been for years because it had gone downhill and were delighted to see our favourite waiter Dan was still there. The pub's under new management (a fairly recent change) and Dan now runs the place for them. It felt just like the good old days. The food was excellent. Starters: delicious black pudding and goat's cheese / two kinds of mushrooms in a lovely sauce on brushetta. Mains: rib eye steak melt in the mouth / rump steak stroganoff sauce to die for, and very clearly freshly cooked to order. Prices were very reasonable. The atmosphere was brilliant; friendly and very welcoming despite it being very busy. The Unicorn used to be one of our favourite places to call in, especially if we wanted to eat and we've missed it. It is definitely back at the top of our list. Apparently it is due for a renovation in a few weeks and we can't wait to see what's done but will almost cetainly be back before they even start.

THis place is totally unsuitable for disabled people. To start with the car park is full of potholes ,, extremely uncomfortable in wheelchair,. no disabled parking spaces either.... then there is a ramp which is uneven and the footplate of w/c caught on it. then you cant get inside the building as there isnt room to push a w/c through due to outside seating. . my husband went in to order drinks and asked for a coffee for me, told it would be 15 mins.. this happened last year and the 15 min turned into 45 so ended up with a bottle of water. wont be visiting again.

Grandkids really like him and have nicknamed him Dan The Man. It was a busy night, told 20 minute wait until food order could be taken and sure enough 20 minutes later Dan came back and took order. Hands down the worst meal I’ve ever been unfortunate enough to leave on the plate! The outdated decor should have set the alarm bells ringing but thought I’d give them a chance Went for the Sunday roast and totally agree with other comments here - food was bland and tasteless. It’s all frozen and reheated in the microwave, honestly I doubt they have a working oven/stove. Close your eyes and you can’t tell the difference between the veg all the flavour has been zapped out. Chicken had a strange slime texture clearly not fresh either. After commenting the food was tasteless there was no comment from management- completely uninterested in customer feedback So given they don’t care thought I’d share my experience with other paying customers hereAfter lockdown you think they’d be more appreciative of custom - think againNever will I return to this hell hole Avoid avoid avoid!

Visited last Friday, was lucky enough to book a table quite last minute on a sunny day.Party of 6 so allowed a table to dine in the restaurant. We were served all night by a young man called Dan, he took the orders for drinks and food separately and served both, as well as any table clearing. We had: Starters: Crispy spring rolls, best I've ever tasted. Others had garlic bread with and without cheese. Sadly no sweet potato fries left.Mains: 3 opted for chicken curry, served with both chunky chips & rice. 1 chicken in peppercorn sauce with skinny fries and peas. A sweet and sour chicken with rice and salad and a childs sausage, chips and peas. All delicious and fresh produce, served promptly.2 desserts: 1 icecream and 1 chocolate fudge cake with squirty cream.Drinks: Draught cola is pepsi and they do diet coke in bottles. Moretti beer for Dads and Mums had cocktails that we think Dan mixed himself! How he managed to do all the serving, clearing and taking orders, often memorizing with no mistakes I've no clue! He was also very entertaining, such a lovely young man, he helped make our night out very special.Love the oldy worldy theme of the pub with the best family beer garden for miles! Has a patio area with tables and covered booths and through a laurel archway to a grassed area with picnic style benches under gazebos and a climbing frame with swings and a slide. At the back there is a marquee available for functions with it's own small lawn.

We waited 45 minutes just for drinks. When we got our meals the food was great but asked for salt 'n vinegar 3 times and we are still waiting for it. None of the staff were wearing face coverings or shields. It did feel very much that they were only interested in their regulars.

Staff Shirley and Dan were very pleasant and attentive. Tables are more spaced out than on our last visit and obviously hand sanitizers dotted about to make it Covid safe. Beer was really nice with couple of cask ales on. Food was spot on. Steak was to perfection and beef stir fry so tasty.Only one negative. That's that we left it so long between visits. Having recently discovered this little pub. I had visited twice with a friend and enjoyed the three course lunch at £6.95. When friends from Ormskirk visited today and invited me out for lunch. I suggested the unicorn as lunch was good for £6.95. The advertising board was outside, advertising the £6.95 lunch, we were told it was not available, in August on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. And we could only have the £20 lunch discounted by government discount to £10. I told the waiter that i was here last week and had the £6.95 menu, but he insisted. I wanted to leave but my friends did not want to spoil my day. The food was not good, and i will not be visiting again, i was embarrassed and the occasion spoilt.

Visited for lunch with my family. There were a few tables already reserved, but we found a table straight away. There is table service, but it took 15 minutes to get 1 menu for our table. It took a further 15 minutes to get served at the bar as the waitress didn't come back to our table. 2 Guinness which were a mess, pouring over the rim of the glass making them sticky and our table wet.The food took over an hour and half to be served. We ordered soup of the day, the club sandwich with fries, the steak and ale pie and chicken nuggets with chips for our daughter. Not especially complicated food. There were 2 parties in the pub the same time as us, but not that many people to justify the long wait.To be fair my club sandwich was delicious, it was a generous size and served piping hot. The soup of the day was chicken noodle and it was great! My husband didn't really like the pie and my daughter didn't like her food either. She had the chips and that was it.The pub is really small and obviously not equipped to handle parties of people. They either need more staff or to stop booking parties over a certain size at the same time.I would return to give them another shot, because I liked my food. The extortionate wait puts me off a little bit. The lady serving us did apologise for the wait. For our food and drinks it was approx £30.

Waited to be seated for 15 minutes even though we could see our table, waited another 20 minutes to be able to order drinks, waited for the menus to be brought out, waited to receive an answer if they did any vegan options, waited for the waitress to return with an answer, waited for her to return to take the order even though we were ready, waited for her to go and then get a pad to write it down, waited for the food, waited over 10 mins for tomato sauce to be brought out whilst our food went cold. A whole lot of waiting and I’ve no idea why any of these things each required an individual trip to the kitchen/bar and back. Even getting the basics right like having the menus and condiments on the tables would prevent more trips back and to. When the food was brought out, 5 of our 7 meals were tiny, we ended up having another dinner when we got home because we were so hungry. The food itself was nice but we were told the two vegan burgers came with onion rings but when they arrived without (after another trip to the kitchen to check) the waitress advised they weren’t vegan so we couldn’t have any. Overall, irritatingly disorganised service and tiny portions mean we’re unlikely to return, certainly not for food anyway.

I visited here tonight with 8 of my family. We had 3 orders of Katsu curry (the description in the menu clearly stated the chicken would be breaded, as is usually the case with Katsu). When the food arrived the Katsu curry comprised of plain chicken breast in watery curry sauce. We asked for this to be taken away and the chicken to be as per the menu. After waiting a further 15 minutes- at this point the rest of our party had finished their food- we asked for the Katsu curry to be removed from the bill and we wanted to settle the bill.

Just had the worst experience ever at this pub. Arrived at 3:30 for a party of 12, lovely old pub with loads of character but clearly lacked a cook. Waited for tow hours to get a main course and when it arrived it was burnt to a cinder. £200 wasted. Avoid this place until they get a proper chef!!

Went earlier today , food fantastic, potential is unreal if thought about , ( just one gripe though ) , the lovely girl that i was running the bar and laying and serving the food , also collecting the empties and clearing the tables was absolutely run off her feet ,and doing all of it alone, it wasn't just today we witnessed this but on most occasions we go in , we feel so sorry for her , the owner's need to give her a triple wage rise to recognise she is doing the work of 3 people , and considering she looks absolutely shattered she never complains , and treats all customers with a smile and great welcoming, she is a gem . .... she deserves top money for what she does otherwise some other lucky employer will be rubbing their hands , another member of staff , even a new young member collecting glasses and serving food to tables is the least the owner's could do to help her .......

Visited recently with a few friends. We had booked a table as from past experiences we thought that the place would be busy. We were surprised as when we arrived we noticed that there were lots of empty tables. Having placed our order we didn't have to wait too long before the food was ready. The first thing that we noticed was the portion size was smaller than when we had last visited and whilst the food tasted ok the curry sauce appeared to taste similar to that of an instant curry sauce mix that you can buy in a supermarket. We therefore decided that we won't be visiting the Unicorn Inn again for a meal especially as there are places offering better value for money not too far away.

Eaten here lots of times especially in the warm weather, it is lovely to sit outside, had lunch yesterday and was very happy with my scampi which was lovely, hubby enjoyed the sausage and mash! Adam was very welcoming and professional even tho he was literally on his own running the bar, taking orders for food and waiting on he was brilliant ! nothing phased him, well done Adam your doing a great job, will be back again and again, and always recommend! the only downside is the pace could do with brightening up inside it is a bit dull,

Not eaten here in a long time. Booked with a large group for mothers day. Food was really disappointing. Ordered Pan fried salmon waiting ages for main but its understandable when busy. Most random dish Ive ever had basically a roast dinner with Yorkshire pudding, veg, roast potatoes then Salmon was uncooked in the middle has to send two back. Yorkshire was burnt to a crisp. Few had steak and ale pie was luke warm. Very tired looking and dull inside. Needs a major refresh.

We went here late October early November and the food was great, home cooked fresh food. We went again 26th February and it was as cheap of food as you could get. Menu has changed which was disappointing and the food is just as you would cook for yourself quickly at home with the kids, something quick and easy. I ordered the chicken curry with half rice half chips, you could count the chips on the plate with no effort. £4.50 for 2 very thin spring rolls which was a real rip off! Don't know what's happened over the last couple of months but the food has definitely diminished to like other reviews microwavable foods!

Have eaten Sunday lunch here on numerous occasions over the last 7/8 years and never been disappointed. Called here 1st Sunday in January and its gone down hill unfortunately. Can only presume there must be a new chef. The food was not up to their usual high standards. We did inform the waitress that the roast dinner was awful. The Yorkshire puds were burnt black as where the roast potatoes. The chips on the fish n chips dish were also burnt. Only 1 hot dessert was ordered and it was cold when it arrived. The couple on the next table complained to us stating they wouldnt be back but they left without telling the waitress. We won't be back in a hurry. Shame as we did enjoy it in the past.

First visit for about 5 years. Used to be fairly regular but not been for a while. Food was good but the service..? Non existent. Totally ignored by the waitress and her co horrible.. a young lad who really had no idea. Prices had shot up horrendously and overall not a great experience, so much so that for the first time EVER I did not leave a tip.. and I used to work in hospitality so know the importance of a ‘tip’.

We were staying at a hotel in Widnes and decided to have an afternoon walk, and in doing so we stumbled across this charming pub. We decided to enjoy a bottle of chardonnay (priced at just under £14) and really enjoyed the quaint charm of this venue. Within an hour of us sitting down it got quite busy with families and children - think there was a child's birthday party - so we didn't eat here, but this is a charming and relaxing place.

Hi, went for lunch on a drive out, lovely pub, old fashioned , somewhat tired decor, but a great atmosphere, friendly helpful staff Donna in particular and locals having a good time , friendly banter, but the main thing we went for was the food which didn't disappoint, homely , well cooked food, steak and ale pie exactly what we all want from a country pub, my partner had the liver which was like cutting butter, gravy was homemade , mash gorgeous, highly recommend this place for the food. Could imagine it would be great for a family roast dinner cosy , old fashioned but comfortable x

Seemed nice and clean and welcoming inside. We had one cheese ploughman's roll and one turkey and stuffing roll. To drink, two cappuccinos and then a small chocolate shortbread. It came to £22. I was so shocked at the price that I queried it, which I wouldn't usually do. Turns out that the rolls cost around £7.50 each, even though the displayed price on them was around £4.65. I was told this was the eat in price. Shame that was not clearly displayed anywhere. I was actually told that it should have cost £24 but we had been given a discount on the shortbread. Nothing was provided with the prepackaged rolls, like a salad garnish. So, extremely expensive for a roll and coffee. The food was nice enough but I felt overcharged and annoyed that the "eat in" price was not clearly shown. Will make sure we don't visit any of their shops again. We eat out a lot and I have rarely felt so ripped off.
