Uncle Jacks Cabin in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Popped into Tintagel as a quick drop off and with the town only having two chip shops, we stopped at the one closest to our car park. Two separate orders given at the same time and a loooong wait. Two fish and chips, 40 mins from order to being ready then another 15/ 20 min wait for the second order in addition. Nearly a whole hour wait from order to being able to leave and eat. Covid being the excuse given for waiting and if you order and don’t want to wait, then tough. Because of Covid no refunds. The locals know this and phone their orders through way beforehand and we had a number of collections occur before our delivery was ready. Portions though were of a good size and at around £7 for fish and chips, I would say that quantity was done for the sake of quality.

Had a great take away on our holiday. Real, traditional fish and chips. Good portion size and value for money. Loved it!

Volunteers from a food bank delivering food parcels in Tintagel was refused fish and chips because they were told they are not LOCAL. They had been working so hard and had nothing to eat how shameful is this i will never use Uncle Jacks Cabin.

we placed our order over the phone and collected it at the time chosen back home in 5 mins to eat very still hot meal just the ticket all hassle free keep it that way

Food is cooked to order so is fresh. Fish & chips is fantastic. We had takeaway from here 3 times during our week stay as the food was far superior to any of the surrounding pubs.

Used their take away facility which offers excellent value for money. Staff extremely friendly and efficient. Fish excellent, fresh and well cooked. Chips disappointing - appeared to have been standing around for some time.

Best I've had in a long time, long wait but worth it to be honest. Polight staff, clean, serving from Cod, kebab to jacket potato. Food is cook fresh.

I waited 35 minutes for my order of 3 fish and chips. The food was very good and I accept the food is cooked to order and may take a little longer. The time taken to serve is not helped when local customers seem to queue jump, this happened twice when I visited. God job we didn’t have a local coach arrive.

We love Uncle Jacks Cabin and get their take-aways every time we visit, usually 2 or 3 times. It is the first food the kids request when we arrive and the last meal when we leave. The fish is always fresh and the batter always crispy and tasty. Our favourites are the chips - always huge mountains of deliciousness. Everything is cooked to order, so we usually phone ahead to order then pick up the food 20 minutes later.

Well what can I say one of the best chippys I've had in a long time very tasty great value for money and great customer service definitely reccomend any one who's in tintagel to visit this place A star food

Very friendly staff ,the young man who served us was excellent, the food was very good chip shop fare with a brilliant choice, very fresh and tasty cod, perfect chips and all made fresh to order. Will be definitely going again before we leave.

Our family was holiday in tintagel and we needed a dinner so we went to Uncle Jacks Cabin and were blown away be the menu variety. I would recommend this place to anyone.

Uncle Jacks has been a family favourite for years and it never fails to produce lovely fish and chips cooked to order - be prepared to wait up to 10 mins. Check opening times in off season - its not open during the lunch times either

Had fish and chips here twice, excellent first time but husband said the fish wasn’t right the second time, mine was fine, told him he should have said something.good portions.dog friendly

Ordered cod and chips with a portion of scampi.Batter on the fish was thick,heavy and overcooked but the fish was sweet,tender and flaky.Chips were served in a polystyrene container,I prefer them wrapped in paper,and they were soft,small and oily.Not good enough for the tourist trap which is Tintagel.

Had a cheese and tomato pizza, presentation very good.

Service was very, very slow. I appreciated my food being cooked fresh but the wait was over 20 minutes. When it arrived the chips were dry and over cooked. The fish was stale and old. We ordered the Rock but I think it was kept at the bottom of the freezer for an indeterminate period of time. I know it may be a lesser requested fish but don't put it on the menu if you can't provide it fresh. No excuse for the chips or the wait. I won't be back and really can't recommend this place. In fact I suggest you avoid it!

Cooked as I arrived, so couldn't be fresher! The fish was excellent with a lovely crispy batter. Portions were a good size. We will definitely return.

Precioso outlet limpio y el personal es amable, sin embargo, las patatas fritas de pescado n eran horribles. Las patatas fritas eran malos y no tenía sabor y después de 20 minutos de espera para los peces nos quedamos muy decepcionados. La operación y producción de servicio definitivamente no es elegante, sí, todo está preparado a su orden, pero sin duda debe haber algunos precocida artículos listas para servir, así que sus clientes no están esperando y esperando. . . . . . . . no me sorprende hay largas colas afuera durante las horas punta. ! ! No volveremos a visitar de nuevo y fuimos cuando no estaba muy concurrido. La variedad del menú es muy bueno, pero no podemos comentar. Los precios también son muy razonables.

No he comido aquí por un número de años y después de la cena esta noche no pensaré volver. Pescado y patatas fritas y aunque pedimos el pescado estaba bien el bateador era muy seco y el las patatas fritas eran en realidad horrible de haber sido ampliamente daba a la mayoría de ellos hizo en la papelera. Definitivamente no lo recomiendo y ahora entiendo por qué el lugar estaba vacío en un sábado por la noche.

Great chippy - lovely fish, freshly cooked, good sized portions, friendly service, reasonable prices and the locals seem to use it. What more is there to say? Oh yes, the owner is a bit of a character.

Eat few times a week. Faultless food vegy spring rolls chips curry sauce best ever had.My son loves the Cod and nuggets amazing friendly staff and fast xxx

The fish and chips were excellent there was a little wait as others have said, but this is because the food is freshly cooked to order and not kept warming. we walked by the shop several times on previous evening and it seams to be popular with local residents which is always a good sign. The prices were very reasonable for freshly cooked cod and chips

Called in here fairly late on Saturday night and the food was lovely. Chips were excellent and the fish was extremely tasty and well cooked. There was a small wait, but as all the food was cooked to order it wasn't unreasonable. Next time I'll ring ahead, but would rather wait for my order to be cooked freshly than be served quickly with reheated food or food that has been kept warm. Excellent... will call again shortly.

Uncle Jacks was the only place open on a Sunday. The service wasn't organised and I waited 30 minutes for my large fish and chips.When it arrived the portion size was extremely tight and looked more like a small. The fish was basically a big lump of thick batter with a slither of what couldn't of been Cod inside. I'm not being dramatic when I say I had to fish around for it. In the gaps between the fish and batter was grease. In summery I think the ownership aren't interested in putting out quality food and retaining customers. Maybe they think customers are passing through and it doesn't matter if they come back.

Visited with a friend and we both ordered a large cod and chips. The wait of half an hour lulled me into thinking the food would be worth the wait as it's obviously done to order.What I received however did not fail to disappoint. Either I wasn't served cod, or there is a variant of the cod that is the thickness of a schnitzel. Not only was the fish paper thin, it was encased in batter that had soaked up most of the fat from the fryer. Luckily the large chips was a pretty measly portion so I didn't have to eat too many.

Arrived late to the village on a saturday and this was the first place we came across after venturing out to find food. My partner went in to order 2x fish and chips as i waited outside with the pooch. I thought he had got lost as it took about 15-20 mins for him to come out. The fish and chips are cooked fresh hence the wait and were very nice.

We were staying in Bossiney by Tintagel so basically we had a choice of 2 chippys. Fortunately we met a lovely local lady on our first day who told us the food was great and she wasn't wrong.Even though there's about a 15 min wait, that's because they cook your food fresh! Fish and chips were wonderful...definitely better than The Big Fish up the road (we tried there later in the week)

Ok for the money and staff are friendly and helpful. Be warned they dont take cards so if you are buying for a family make sure you have plenty of cash

We were on holiday and called in and ordered our fish and chips and waited while they were cookedWhile in there a lady came in and was refused and was told that they had CLOSED I noticed that the SUMMER OPENING HOURS were till 9.30 and the time was 8.20 !!!!!While waiting for our food the staff were messing about and this did not set a good presentation.Customers came in after us who had rang through and got served before us which was npot a very good pointIts a shame as the fish and chips were nice but we will never go here again

We have been using this restaurant for years when we holiday at Headland Caravan site Tintagel, just been back there whit week and it gets better and better, staff very friendly, all food cooked fresh to order and taste fantastic, excellent customer care - very freindly and welcoming - they remember you straight away from the previous year !!!! Highly recommended - cant wait to go there again October or next whit

Visited on our first evening as we explored the village. The fish was nice although the batter was very thick. Chips were mediocre at best.

The first time we have used Uncle Jack's Cabin. The freshly cooked fish was excellent, the portions generous, and the whole meal very good value for money.

Good quality fish and chips cooked to order which I have had several times now and which I usually order by telephone and collect. Always good quality and plentiful every time. Please note that this is a Take Away only.

This is our second visit to the area, and we always seem to visit this chip shop on our first night after our drive. Very good fish and chips, about a 15 minute wait but I would say worth it. The quality of the fish is very very good, the chips might not be to everyone's liking, I fully enjoyed them. I would recommend this chip shop to my friends, which means it must be more than acceptable, enjoy

We called into this chip shop after a long walk in the area. They had just opened so we didn't have to queue. We sat inside to eat and the staff were efficient and friendly. The choice of menu was good although we just wanted the traditional fish and chips; which were lovely.

Lovely, friendly staff and all food is freshly cooked to order. Very reasonably priced and very tasty.

My husband and I have stayed in Bossiney many times and always have our fish and chips from Uncle Jacks cooked fresh and worth the wait and the chat a varied menu which we have had most things and all have been very good.

I'm from Grimsby and never would have admitted that there was a better plaice (see what I did there?... Sorry) to get fish and chips than Grimsby or Cleethorpes - until my trips to Uncle Jack's Cabin. Just chips the first time, haddock and chips the next, rock and chips on our final visit - all beautiful! I must point out at this point that, as I don't live in Grimsby anymore I don't go to the chippy more than a couple of times a year (max) usually!However, this place is so popular and they cook everything fresh to order so you could be in for a long wait. 40 minutes our last visit took (which meant we missed our final sunset of the holiday by 2 minutes).My only other bug-bear was that I asked for a lightly battered rock and the request didn't seem to have been passed on to the cook. Otherwise, I'm sure it would have been a 5* review.

Very disappointed have to say was bloody disgusting and the worst we have ever had will not!!! Be going back again I'm sorry to say :-(

Fish and chips, which was good, nothing special but what you would expect.Service a bit slow and they seemed very busy, one customer asked for a refund due to time waited and this was given without question.

We came last year and were back again and next year will return. Quite simply some of the best fish and chips we have ever had. Well done team Uncle Jack, keep up the good work.

Really nice and freshly cooked fish and chips, seems to be popular with both locals and tourists. Only complaint is I prefer to have fish and chips in paper not polystyrene cartoons, but the food is great which is what matters.

We walked past Uncle Jack's Cabin on our recient trip to the UK and noticed how bright and clean it was, so we decided to get some food to try see if it was as good as it looked. The chips were a little soggy, however, the fish was fresh and tasty and the pork sausages,,,,, in all my years of traveling I can honestly say that Uncle Jack's has the best pork sausages in the world, YUM. If you are in the area, stop and be delighted

Stay away! Unless you want brown, over fried, a smell that would make you sick chips. After travelling from Boscastle for a take out we found this place. Large variety on the menu and we thought great. After asking for several items, all to be told that they didn't have them we gave in and went for just the good old traditional chips. Didn't want to be rude when I saw him hand them over to me; but yes they went straight into the bin. You wouldn't even feed them to the dog.

This is a good chippy that all the locals seem to use. Everything is cooked to order and pretty good value for money. This means there is a bit of a wait, but (having been in a couple of times) there always seems to be some entertaining banter between the owner and regular customers.

A rainy Monday and we were glad to find uncle jack's. High hopes as the fish was cooked fresh, although needed to be dried a bit as slightly greasy. Chips were not crispy, but maybe that's how King Arthur likes them.

I must admit to being a bit of a regular at Uncle Jacks Cabin. There are days when all that you want is fish and chips, and when those days come I'm pleased we live within striking distance of Uncle Jacks Cabin in Tintagel.But don't be in a rush, everything is made to order - there's no stack of sweating fish waiting for someone to walk through the door - your order is cooked when you order it - which makes it all the more tasty and fresh.There is a massive menu of choices on offer from traditional fish and chips to burgers, pizza, kebabs, curries and lots more besides - something for everyone!!There are no tables, so it's take away only, which suits me just fine - telly on, feet up, fish and chips at the ready!! But if you are visiting and want to take in the scenery, walk to the other end of town to Arthurs castle and watch the sun set and you munch through your feast!!Well worth a try - but be patient - the best things in life are worth a little wait!

Wonderful food and service, we usually get fish and chips. We get takeout from there every visit to Tintagel.

Wow!! We had to wait for 30 minutes but it was well worth it. The fish was cooked to perfection with a light batter and golden in colour. The chips were delicious, crispy and fluffy and plenty of them. Decided to have a chippy take away after a day surfing in Newquay.

Good choice of food, chips were delicious. Friendly, pleasant staff, served us even though they were just about to close (we didn't know closing time). Visited twice over the two weeks as such a choice, cod was very nice also!

The place itself may no look much but trust me you will certainly enjoy the food. Everything is cooked fresh to order and there is always a queue. We ate there twice last week and even the kids cleared their plates. Give it a try you won't be disappointed.

Lovely fish and chips.. had to wait a while but it was definitely worth the wait as everything was freshly cooked! The man behind the counter was very friendly and even though it was busy he still managed to smile and be polite to everyone. Would definitely recommend!

chips overcooked (like they had been cooked twice) not nice, but fish was tasty & sausages as these were cooked to order which i didnt mind waiting for 20mins, seems norm in these parts. would have been good value if it wasnt for the awful chips, shame

We have been to Uncle Jacks and always found the food and service excellent we will be in Cornwall next year and although we are not staying in Tintagel this time we intend oo making a special trip to visit our favourite chip shop

Moderate wait but not too horrendous (25 Mins) and the guys working there are friendly enough. They didnt have a couple of things I asked for which was disappointing but not end of the world. Food was ok. Not the greatest ive ever had but by no means not the worst but inexpensive with reasonable portions so was value for money. Would go back if was staying in the area longer.

The food seems to be cooked to order which is commendable but the waiting time is long. We found that our chips were cold even though they were covered by the hot but rather greasy battered fish. We have had far better fish and chips at other establishments. The owners are very friendly.

AS a local to the village I always have found the food here to be of good quality, and generous portions at that!, This I find refreshingly consistent even in the holiday season, (when some portions at some establishments seem to shrink), The owners are very pleasant people who will have a laugh and chat with anybody, (even if you originate from the north!) as I do in fact, Yes there is sometimes a wait when its busy, but this is Cornwall not fast food city, you wait because its cooked fresh if you wan`t food straight away cooked without care then try Mc Donalds , Its only 26 miles away! you will find that most village fish and chip shops here In Cornwall are ran the same,

We waited for at least thirty minutes expecting then that the food would be freshly cooked. When it arrived it was awful : chips small , greasy and warm and the fish batter was too thick and uncooked inside . The condiments were OK

Really are the best I've had. The huge portions,friendly service, crispy batter, fresh chips, great prices and cooked to order. An Indian or Chinese takeaway is cooked to order so what's the problem?

Parking in a nearby car park,we popped down to this chippy recently.The young lad serving was a good laugh and happy in his work,and our food was cooked to the order.I could easily say we waited 30 minutes for our 4xcod and chips but there was a big queue so i will let them off!The fish was stunning,but not quite enough,and the chips were great too.Both the staff members were a credit to this shop.Well done.

We come here every time time we visit Cornwall. The food is excellent, and the service is fab. Slight wait for food, but then its all cooked fresh and well worth the wait. Always made to feel welcome to.

Rick Stein's this is not ! and consequently visit the chippy that the locals use for good quality takeaway Fish and Chips at sensible prices - a family of 4 can loose off £20-£30 on takeaway fish and chips in Padstow but not here.

The food takes ages to be cooked and when i was in there all the owner was talking about how he hates northerners (i am northern). Also the food takes ages!!!

I went here on recommendation from someone who lived in the area a number of years ago. Having read the other reviews on here I was a little sceptical but thought that maybe they deserved a chance.I arrived at around 6.30 on a Friday evening and there must have been 10 customers waiting. I gave my order for two portions of cod and a large chips and sat down. It was fairly obvious that most, if not all, of the customers were locals. After a 20 minute wait my order was ready. In that time I would estimate that around 15 orders had been cooked and served.I took my order back to my hotel, the Tintagel Arms - see separate review - where my wife and I tucked into an excellent piece of fish and chips.The fish was delicious, succulent and well flavoured in a crispy batter. The one large portion of chips was easily enough for the two of us and again, well cooked.They do 3 different size portions of cod and the same with the chips. They also do a wide variety of other foods including chicken and curry.You don't have to wait all night for your food and what time you do wait is well worth it. As with anywhere, if it's patronised by the locals it must be good.

I have been in here a few times to order food in the past, but it is so slow as they cook each order in turn (even if its only chips). The food is lovely but they havent got the knack of cooking more than one order at a time.

This must be the slowest chippy ever. Be prepared to wait for up to half an hour. Better to use The Big Fish just down the road. The fish is cooked to order (5 mins) but chips are always available and the portions enormous.

We visit Cornwall many times a year and stay at various self catering places. We always try and come and have Fish and Chips from Uncles Jacks Cabin to take back with us. Made to order and a good selection of items on the menu. Note the opening hours as not open long during the summer or winter but worth a visit. Gets busy quickly. We have often ordered and then gone for a quick half (make sure you tell them).
