Been there many times and the coffee, service, and food is always top notch, never go anywhere else for lunch time food

Great coffee (IT'S HOT - unlike others which are lukewarm at best!!!!), excellent service, great sandwiches, great soup. Value for money. Spot on !!!!

I love this cafe, really yummy food and such friendly staff. We stopped for coffee and ordered sandwiches for our picnic lunch, and wow, what a delicious and unusual choice of sandwich fillings to choose from. Sandwiches came with lovely fresh bread and bulging with filling, and a happy face drawn on each sandwich bag. We certainly were happy!

Super sandwich and cake menu - delicious and very varied salad bar. Staff very friendly and efficient. Lovely coffee and pleasant surroundings.

Dropped in for a takeaway sandwich and ordered the New Yorker which was outstanding, fresh soft bread and filled with cheese, pastrami and a gherkin piccalilli mix which was outstanding!!

I love coming here. The staff are so friendly and customer orientated. The sandwiches are just AMAZING. I love the salad bar and the coffees are suburb. The food comes to your table fast and it is plentiful and incredibly fresh. I wish I could come here all the time!

This place must be one of the hidden gems of Wantage. This is one of the best full English breakfast we have ever had, everything tasted so delicious: homemade hashbrowns, eggs like the morning sun, crispy bacon, fried Mushrooms. Absolutely delicuous toast with grilled salmon & smashed avocado. Great coffe and green tea (especially japanese tea). The owners always very friendly and made to feel very welcome suitable for everyone.

Nice family-run restaurant and deli. Very good buffet with fresh salad and hot food - also delicious and varied sandwich menu. Friendly and efficient service.

I have been in here a few times on my visits to Wantage. The bread is so fresh and the sandwich fillings interesting and different. They take great care in everything and are really friendly. Great place to eat. Also they have a cheese counter with lots of choice.

One gets the impression that one is welcome after the usual friendly greeting. It kinda makes you want to sit and have a good meal. The food is great. A simple selection, we particularly enjoy the English breakfast. Not at all like a fry up. Not greasy at all, but very tasty. My wife finds their gluten-free brekkie really tasty. Easy to chat as the music plays quietly in the background.

Pop into Wantage today and decided to have a coffee and a slice of cake in Umami, we have passed this cafe many times so this time we went in, we were not disappointed its a very nice cafe/restaurant, the sandwiches and salads look first class and the staff/owners gave us a warm welcome, we will be back next time we are in town...

Stopped in and bought an excellent selection of cheese. Including Gorgonzola, (my favourite) really very good deli with very polite, helpful staff. Would recommend

Eaten here a few times for lunch & have tried a selection of their sandwiches. All the sandwiches are very reasonably priced given the quality & quantity of fillings in addition to the tasty bread. Service is always prompt & friendly. Only slight niggle is the chilled drinks aren’t chilled.

Have eaten here on several occasions, love the food and friendly service. It is worth a little wait to get a freshly made sandwich of exceptional quality. The cost is not much more than you pay elsewhere for a pre-made wrapped sandwich. The recently opened salad bar with hot options is also excellent value and filling. Love this place and friendly service.

I have visited here a couple of times now. The food is really good quality and great portions. The sandwiches are really substantial and well worth the money. The salad bar is great with hot options as well. The service is great - really attentive and certainly better than you would usually get in a similar place. Highly recommended!

Frequently call in here to purchase slightly unusual products. Has a good cheese counter and does drinks and snacks.

Worth a visit for the range of cheese on offer alone. Great selection of snacks and lunches and fresh smoothies. Also sells food gifts and delivers to local business.

We always like to support independents so visited Umami for a quick sandwich and coffee at lunchtime. Excellent friendly service, good portions and tasty. Helpful service, it was quiet and a nice atmosphere, make a nice change from the crowded Oxford places, close to town centre. Some tempting cheeses and meats at the deli - maybe another time.

Absolutely delicious Sicilian sandwich. Pesto mozzarella and roasted veg filling. Really so tasty. Lovely welcoming staff and clean fresh decor. Very nice place and I recommend it for a delicious meal. Lots of vegetarian options and a really hot fresh latte.

Yummy food, fast service, helpful friendly and polite staff, clean, quiet with nice music (admittedly was a weekday), and good highchairs for children. Definitely recommend

A lovely little deli in Wantage where you can buy fresh produce from the counter, browse the well-stocked shelves for foodie items/gifts, or sit in to enjoy their freshly-made sandwiches, jacket potatoes & cakes. The huge doorstop sandwiches are served on lovely soft thick bread (gluten-free available) with a side salad & crisps, & are excellent value at around £5. There are a number of veggie fillings available, including a delicious ‘rustic veg’ option with falafel, roasted veg, hummus & rocket. Filling, fresh food & a nice atmosphere. Will definitely be visiting again.

Just popped in for a drink and piece of cake, got the coffee, got the cake, but the chamomile tea arrived with a small sprig of 8 flower heads on stalks - with a nice little name tag holding it all together. The cup was a reasonable size and the water looked very much like slightly tinted water, when the lady wife asked if further flowers could be provided to impart some flavour (as she was usually in receipt of 20 or so flower heads in other emporia) the waiter seemed to suggest that at £2.15 a cup what did you expect to get! A reasonable cup of something you could actually taste was our thought.

This cafe/deli is a little gem. The owners and staff are very friendly and always helpful. The cafe food and drinks are excellent and if you like hot chocolate as I do it is probably the best you will taste, don't ask Dan- the owner for the recipe it is a secret, just try it and luxuriate. the deli is first class and a real plus in Wantage, so go and try it and like me and my friends you go go again and again and again................

My first visit for lunch today with a friend, I have had tea and cake here before but today we had a freshly made sandwich, it was very nice, there were lots of choice also a choice of the kind of bread we'd like to have. Friendly polite staff.

Habíamos estado en Umami para almuerzo y café varias veces y me pareció que dan y Ava los propietarios muy amables y agradables. El deli tiene una gran variedad de productos interesantes de todo el mundo. Helado casero de dan helado es realmente delicioso. Decidí llevar a mi marido a su noche de especialidades marroquíes como regalo de cumpleaños como el menú de 5 platos parecía delicioso. No nos decepcionó, los campos que incluye sopa harira picante, queso, perejil y todas las especias de espinacas parcelas con acuñaron halloumi y harissa hummus (éste fue mi favorito). Luego condimentadas chuletas de cordero y de mi esposo favorito: maíz alimentado por mashi Djaj pousin que estaba repleto de fechas, albaricoques, nueces y arroz. Su rostro lo dijo todo ya que disfrutamos de cada respirar! ! Dan dijo el secreto es cocinar muy lentamente, así que es jugosa y tierna. Para terminar teníamos pasteles fritos en miel y semillas de sésamo. Toda la comida era una rica mezcla de especias y sabores de oriente medio. Como vegetariano disfruté alternativas encantador para los platos de carne, incluyendo patatas al vapor con una cremosa salsa dulce con cuscús. Tome su propio alcohol si lo desea y refrescos están incluidas en el precio de la comida. Dan y Ava disfrutamos charlando con todos los huéspedes, y fueron muy atentos, una espléndida noche

I popped in hoping for a tasty homemade soup to takeaway. I was charged £4.20. Whilst I was waiting I saw the waitress opening a can of Heinz soup! I couldn't believe it, asked for my money back which they were fine about and left.

Last night's Persian Evening was an absolute triumph. Fantastic food (five courses), a full restaurant and incredible value for money. The portions were generous to a fault and unlimited free soft drinks which proved an added bonus. Further events are planned - the next two being a Valentine's Tapas celebration and a Lebanese evening. Highly recommended!

15 minutes wait for coffee and 35 minutes for food all ordered and paid for first. If this new management improvements then it's a worry.The wild boar sausages were good, but hamburger was hard to eat as it was overlooked and dry.No soap in the toilet which makes me wonder how staff wash hands properly and not up to hygiene standards.A very disappointing lunch.

Visited due to the strong reputation for lunch. Great deli and selection of world foods. Lunch was ok. Great range but slow service with not very cheerful staff. However this was probably due to a busy period. The food was good.A far better offering than anything else we saw in Wantage. Do visit.

Seems like new owners are trying new things and taking good risks to explore new opportunities. I liked their idea as it used to be boring place. New menu, new products and new seating arrangements are all in the right direction.

Long a favourite coffee and snack and ice cream stopping off spot. It's changed hands but the coffee is still excellent and the cakes are very good, try the chocolate and orange cake, my kids demolished it in under a minute, I barely got a look in.

Was always a great place to have a coffee and cake but now under the new ownership it is getting even better with a wide range of food to eat in or take away and a great deli selection

This deli changed hands 3 weeks ago. The atmosphere has changed completely with bland seating and a limited cheese and deli offering and other range reduced. I'll give it another go in a few weeks once the new management have had a chance to make their mark properly, but I'm not optimistic.

This is a unique delicatessen with a twist. Selling ice cream, cheeses, tea, pasta, delicious lunch, flavoursome salads, samples and MUCH more! The food is flavoursome and vibrant. The water closet is hygienic.I recommend this place to anyone looking for a beautiful lunch given to you with a warm smile.Loverly place.

Stopped off for much needed refueling during a 100 mile bike ride. Due to my dilemma of what to have first, an espresso or gelato, an 'affogato' was suggested by the very friendly staff. I chose pistachio gelato topped with the espresso. Absolutely delicious!

We made a special effort to re-visit Umami after at least a year. And we were not disappointed. In fact it was a little better. The salad dish was so tasty and contained a super ranges of salad and beans plus hummus. The sandwiches must be the most tasteful Oxfordshire. And the ice cream is to die for.And your are surrounded by a lovely selection of packed deli foods.

Just popped in to buy some icecream which was really delicious. There was a wide range of flavours and it provided helpful information regarding different diets which was great especially for my friend who is gluten free/coeliac. There are some lovely, fresh breads and pastries for sale too. There is also a selection of (gluten free) pastas and Mediterranean delicacies, including meats and olives.

Nice atmosphere for a coffee and sweet whilst in Wantage.Great variety of products available to take home from the deli.Would definitely go back for lunch another day.

I am new to the area so decided to scout out a sandwich shop for some lunch. I had a hummus and roast veg on onion bread and it was delicious. The filling was so yummy, I just wanted there to be more of it!

Visited yesterday (having been given a token from a local garage for a free coffee and cake whilst I waited for my car service) and was very pleasantly surprised by this cafe/deli. A lovely small choice of cakes and drinks with a great array of cheese and deli items. My fresh mozzarella, pesto and roasted veg sandwich was extremely tasty and the aged Parmesan cheese I took home for my husband was a huge hit! The staff were incredibly welcoming (even to my son who is a rambunctious 4 year old!) offering tasters of the deli items before purchase. Overall a great little gem in a small market town filled with the usual chain cafes.

My first time stopping in Wantage was not a disappointment. We were doing a long cycle ride and this place stood out as perhaps somewhere to stop. Well boy am I glad we did, lovely decor, really friendly staff, superb food and coffee (go for the house special sandwich) and to cap it all, a quick cheese tasting session with an International Cheese Judge. I want one of these places to open near me!

Lovely variation of sandwiches, using a great combination of ingredients. Nice relaxed atmosphere with staff being extremely warm and knowledgeable about all their products. The shop side of it is also fantastic, albeit a little pricey, but somewhere you would definitely buy ingredients for if you were planning something special... We usually make up a Christmas hamper with all ingredients bought from here.

Great coffee and gourmet sandwiches with an selection of excellent cheeses. and with friendly service Ideal place to drop in for a snack and about to celebrate its fifth year on September 16th. Limited selection of deli food but all of a high quality. This was my first visit but I will be back regularly now.

I love to pop by for a coffee and at times will treat myself to one of their freshly made sandwiches. I have often bought their cheese to treat friends with and have had great service to help me select the cheese I'm looking for.

This is a great little deli.The sandwiches are made with amazing fresh produce, the tomatoes bread is a must try. The owners who also work behind the counter are super knowledgeable about the products they sell. It's also a great place to buy a foodie a gift. Some of the produce is unfamiliar but with the help and guidance of the owners and staff you will be sure to buy the best items for you. Try the almond and fig wheel, goes great with a strong cheese and a good alternative to relish or pickles.

we stopped in to have a browse and ended up having a cheese tasting with an extremely knowledgable Michael. No pressure to purchase and no absolutely no pressure on time. We will be back soon.

I came in with quite good hopes as it looked like a nice quaint little café, the greeter was polite, but when asking for a sandwich the reply was that there was no white bread, which isn't so bad, so I told them that I was not a fan of wholemeal at which point I was told I could have a wrap instead, so I ordered the chicken, pesto and sun dried tomato and proceeded to a seat, when the food was ready, I had to go to the counter to collect it, my wholemeal wrap.. Annoying as my decision to get it was pertaining to the fact I don't like it, the wrap looked semi presentable, but the portion size was awful, about four mouthfuls containing the weakest slice of chicken I think I've ever seen and charging over four pounds for that is extortionate. The coffee along side was average, all in all a complete waste of money, will not be returning.

The best olives I have ever tasted, in a gorgeous little Deli hidden behind the market place, served with a smile! I was made to feel like a VIP at the olive tasting evening, and the wine was delicious!

Having had little luck finding appetising vegetarian sandwich options in Wantage, I thought I had struck lucky. The range of sandwiches does look appealing. I ordered a mozzarella, roasted veg and pesto sandwich on tomato bread and a chicken, chorizo and tomato sandwich for my partner to take away. When eating them later the overwhelming taste in both sandwiches was salted butter. Please, please, please can you ask customers when they order if they want butter. I know a lot of people who can't stand butter in sandwiches. Unfortunately it ruined the sandwiches for us. We were also quite disappointed on the lack of balance of filling in the chicken, chorizo and tomato sandwich. It consisted of a layer of extremely thinly sliced chorizo but only four tiny pieces of chicken and two cherry tomatoes in the whole sandwich.

So many choices in Wantage, we fancied something a little different so tried Unami. Good service. We both had sandwiches, mine was a veggi one that was on tomato bread. Fresh and very tasty. Pleasant surroundings - worth the visit for a quick healthy snack.

With local friends enjoyed a chocolate and the local ambiance. Local produce look appealing and an outlet for the local mill. We will be back

I frequently pop in Umami when I want a treat, or to buy foodie gifts. The service to so friendly and staff always give you time and share their knowledge and recommendations. I have always been happy with my purchases and their Chorizo 'hot dogs' are to die for! Highly recommended and they make a lovely change from the popular 'chain' coffee shops, with a much more personal touch

We enjoy going to umami on a regular basses as they have the best coffee and cheese as well as many numerous other delicacies to temp us . Best coffee in Wantage.

I went in to Umami and was greater by the lady that owns the shop very pleasantly as she advised me someone would be with me shortly (hence marking 1 star as I believe I should acknowledge her politeness). A young girl asked me what I would like, I asked for 2 scoops of the dark chocolate sorbet in a cone please, the young girl proceeded to pick up with her bare hands, no gloves and no serviette & gave me what was 2 x 1/2 scoops of the sorbet, when I asked her that I requested and would like to pay for 2 scoops, she said it's down in the bottom of the cone......as the cone it's self was very small and not what I would say holds 2 full scoops, I said I'm not going to argue with you I'd either like 2 scoops or I will leave it. I was really looking forwards to my sorbet, but it wasn't to be....

A place for foodies! Products in shop are pricey but then that is to be expected as they are quality and extra special stuff you are not going to get in the supermarket. Foody paradise with great range of interesting cooking ingrediants. Good cheese counter. Quirky place to stop for a good hot drink and piece of baklava. Yum!

Umami is a real treat in Wantage, they service good quality and delicious food for quick lunch. We enjoyed to go there for a sandwich and coffee. It is better option compared to chain coffee shops in Wantage.

Spent almost an hour sampling, buying and discussing cheese. Very knowledgeable, helpful and generous staff. Well kept cheese in excellent condition.

Getting a sandwich for lunch from Umami is a real treat, the bread is always fresh and tasty and the fillings are so much better than you get anywhere else, great flavour combinations too! Lots of yummy specialist foods to discover, great for people who love their food.

We happened upon Umami's bright colours and big windows by chance wandering around Wantage today. We were greeted by smiley faces who were knowledgable and passionate about their produce too.Our hot chocolates were divine, like the best chocolate ice cream only hot! They were more than helpful when we needed to feed our son too.The atmosphere is of a relaxed cafe where big tables with benches invite strangers to sit comfortably together without invading each other's space.If this deli was in the main marketplace it would be doing a roaring trade.Like one of the previous reviews I had wondered about the paper cups initially but by the door there's a big poster about their recycling policy - good on them!

We visit this friendly and enthusiastically run deli/cafe frequently. The sandwich combinations are inspired and chorizo hot-dogs just delicious. The deli counter is always worth a browse before leaving. The proprietor seems to be continuously sourcing new and interesting additions. Highly recommended.

Umami is different! The staff are very knowledgable in the produce they sell and are always happy to let you taste before you buy. Their little cafe is lovely and clean and their food has a nice rustic quality.

I took my Mother here for lunch and really wished I hadn't.Our coffee was tasty but served in take away paper cups with plastic spoons.My Mother ordered soup, which to her horror arrived in a polystyrene tub and a plastic spoon.My sandwich was nice, although covered in green when I had said no salad. However the sandwich arrived on a paper plate inside a paper bag. The staff knew we were eating in so very odd to serve as if it was a take out.The quality of the food may be fairly good but the presentation leaves a great deal to be desired.Certainly not somewhere I would ever want to go to for lunch again.

This is a brilliant deli with fab cheeses as well asall sorts of other gorgeous things to eat. You can have your coffee, sandwichess or delicious pastries in house or even sit at a table on the pavement licking an icecream or sorbet which come in exotic flavours as well asthe more standard. I can cope with the coffee in a paper cup when it's as good as Mike's!

Michael, Annette and their staff are always willing to give helpful information about the products on sale. The tasting sessions they put on are great - really helpful to be able to taste before buying. You are always encouraged to taste as many of the products such as cheese and ice cream before buying anyway. (Ice cream is really special!!) Just a lovely place to go for coffee and something to eat - really friendly and helpful atmosphere.

Popped in on a Saturday just after 2pm.. was met by very nice staff and nice menu.Sandwiches were very good, fresh ingredients and served quickly but the nice atmosphere didn't make us feel rushed and we stayed for some time with cups of tea.Overall very nice - just question the environmental values of paper cups, plates and plastic cups when a ceramic plate/ cup washed on site is both better for the environment and nicer for the customer!

Our first visit was on Saturday last. The coffee was delightful and neither too strong or too large as we tend to find in other high street coffee shops. The staff were delightful and the food delicious. They also try very hard to recycle and generally be environmentally aware. Full marks, and thanks!

Located just of the square, it is a great deli, that seconds as a coffee shop (great coffee).The range of sandwiches is imaginative, albeit a little on the expensive side. However they do use quality, fresh ingredients. The service is good and they encourage you to try samples of the meats or cheese they have on offer.Only down side (for me) is no wifi...for those who enjoy a change of scenery from working from home and adopting a chair for the afternoon with several coffees, it is impractical.

Bright modern interior, excellent friendly service with a range of offerings. I have learnt that this is not a cafe, the seats are there if you wish to eat in and not take away.Coffee is far superior to any other available locally, I have tried the sandwiches and can particularly recommend the chorizo hot dogs on a Friday and Saturday! For the quality of food and as mentioned excellent service I would far prerer to eat and drink from (high quality) paper cups than experience a mass produced or watered down offering.

Located 50 yards from the main square in Wantage, this place acts as both deli and cafe. The interior is very bright and modern by Oxfordshire standards. Seating is arranged as a couple of long tables which require sharing when the place is busy, or some high bar stool type chairs positioned on the side of the room. There don't seem to be many seats availalbe for what is quite a big space. My partner found the bar stool chairs quite uncomfortable.As a cafe they serve a mix of imaginative sandwiches, soups, cakes and hot drinks. For some reason they serve hot drinks in paper cups even if you're eating in. That's just odd and doesn't compare well against rivals in the town.The deli selection is quite limited and that side of their business is going to struggle unless they can carve out a more specialist service, because both the local Waitrose store and the local independent butcher have a better range of deli offerings.Service is pleasant but until they make the seating arrangements a little more comfortable and start serving hot drinks in something other that paper cups then I'll probably take my custom elsewhere.
