A wonderful meal! What a treat! Perfectly presented and cooked. We didn't know what to expect but were delighted with everything which we ordered. We cant wait to go again to try more of the specialities on offer! Don't be put off by the lack of prices on the website - that was another surprise, and great value for money. Fellow Norfolk diners you are missing out! Wonderful food at very reasonable prices in comfortable surroundings - We loved it. Thank you to all concerned.

We came here about 6.40 as the menu looked brilliant.. about 8 people in the pub, we asked for a table as wanted to eat, they couldn’t accommodate us as the kitchen was short staffed, and they had bookings coming in shortly! No waiting staff, no kitchen staff!! Reduce your menu if this is an issue!!! No Matter how good, i wouldn’t recommend to anyone

Will be going back a lot! There is such a great menu and everything is delicious.. the Chefs are very attentive to quality ingredients taste and presentation. The drinks offering is good too. I am going to eventually sample the whole menu. Great for couples, families and with accommodation open above now offers a great stay in a lovely Norfolk setting. My favourite place to eat in Norfolk! The owners are both great people with attention to both detail and service. Can. It recommend highly enough. Wish I had pictures of the food but couldn't wait to tuck in haha!

If you like really good food at a reasonable price then you must seek out the Barking Buck in Colton near Barnham Broom. Under new ownership since December 2023 the restaurant offers a good selection of small and large plates. We shared four small plates: octopus/steamed gyozo/chicken satay/pork belly followed by a delightful baked cheese cake and a light sticky toffee pudding. Each dish had been carefully prepared and tasted divine. We took the road off the Mattishall road, rather than the one running beside the Barnham Broom Hotel resort complex, as it is a wider road.

I have eaten at this pub when it was known as the ugly bug inn and the Norfolk lurcher but the new owners have really impressed me with the food on offer. We came a couple of weeks ago and had small plates and really enjoyed the food so went back with family members. We really struggled to choose because the menu all sounded amazing so we ended up ordering alot but everything was so fresh and the flavours were so yummy that even with the slightly higher price tag we thought it was definitely worth it. My favourite is the octopus and my other half loved the belly pork. I am a big foodie and like to try new things so I have eaten at a lot of places but this is now one of my favourites. Mark and Rose are wonderful hosts and Rose is the one behind the amazing food. Lush food, wonderful service, staff friendly and the pub still has a romantic feel about it we will definitely be back. Unfortunately some of the pictures I took of the main menu won’t upload but try it for yourselves Charlene and Pete

Very friendly owners and staff and very good food on a varied menu; recommend the fish dishes. We ate there on holiday and ate a lunch and an evening meal. You need to check that the pub is opening as owners adjusting hours following lock down. Handy for Barham Broom golf club.

Visited a couple of years ago and promised ourselves to return as it was so good. But this time we were disappointed so will not be going back.Tried to ring to book a table admittedly on Monday and Tuesday when they were closed but never got an answer or ability to leave a message. So messaged them - no reply. Managed to book on Wednesday morning.Arrived and one of the staff/owners was outside talking. He acknowledged us. We went and waited to be be seated but he just carried on talking. Eventually was shown to our table. The meal whilst good was not as good as we remembered but still probably worth the visit.I drank my pint of cask ale and my glass was taken but i was not asked if i wanted another. We finished our dinner and waited and waited for someone to come back and clear the table. Then waited for the dessert menu. When it arrived I asked if i could get another pint. Eventually someone came over and took my order. My wifes dessert arrived and she had nearly finished but no sign of my drink. My wife managed to attract the waiters attention and eventually she came over and asked what beer i had ordered - my wife had long finished her dessert. So I said it was now too late and i did not want it.We got our bill took it to the till and was asked if everything was OK. I said it was a pity about the beer and he said "ah that is down to me". No apology and a little bit of a do not care attitude. In fact the whole evening was a little bit like that. Such a shame as it is a really nice location and place.

Not family friendly. Ridiculous rule about no push chairs because apparently they get in the way. We were the only people inside the pub, so who exactly we would have got in the way of, I am really not sure. Expected a 6 month old baby to sit on our laps whilst we ate dinner so we decided to leave. Our boy would have quietly slept if we had been allowed in with the push chair. We relocated to a pub 1 mile down the road “The Honingham Buck” where we were greeted with a warm welcome, we were allowed the push chair (despite the pub being full), it has great food and really friendly staff. Go here instead.

Very polite and efficient when booking table by phone, Lovely welcome upon arrival and shown straight to our table, took order for drinks almost immediately so we could scan the menu while chatting and drinking.Chap who took our food order was very joyful and polite.Food arrived very quickly and was well presented, also was excellently prepared , I had Venison and my partner had Norfolk pork belly and both dishes melted in your mouth. All round a lovely quaint pub/restaurant and lovely location to go for a quiet meal to chat and have a nice meal, only downside as my partner mentioned could have done with some quiet background music, but otherwise no complaints and highly recommended.

We were treated to a very rare evening away from the children, so wanted to try somewhere new to eat. We'd been here once for a drink and found it to be a really welcoming, traditional pub set in beautiful grounds, so wanted to return to try out the menu.We were taken to our table which had lovely ambience and nice space between each table. The service was prompt, although we weren't offered the vegitarian menu nor the specials board and had to ask to see these ourselves. All menu's had lots of variety and would cater for all.The food was very nice and average size portions. One thing we noticed is that no one came to ask if the meal was ok. I didn't mind this, but had there of been a problem, again it would've been down to us to find someone to ask.We definitely would return though and would recommend to others. I hope this lovely pub survives these extremely tough times.

Our family of four went for a birthday meal. We immediately felt safe, with ample opportunities for hand sanitizing, and staff in appropriate face coverings. Our hosts John, Alison and Danny were attentive and made us feel very welcome. The dining area was big enough to feel safely distanced, but small enough to have a warm atmosphere. The local ale “Worth the Wait” was well kept and worthy of their CAMRA award. The NZ Cab Sav was very palatable.I had a local venison and my wife had Dover Sole from the specials board, both of which came with ample sides and could not be faulted. Our vegetarian daughters thoroughly enjoyed fish and chips, and vegetarian sausages. We shared a Brûlée and crumble dessert, and will come again!

We've only just moved in to the area and wanted somewhere to go for a casual but important (1st wedding anniversary) lunch. We didn't have a reservation, but turned up here and were immediately spoken to and made to feel welcome. We enjoyed that the drinks were ordered and we were seated in the bar to browse the menu. Then when your food is almost ready you are seated properly at your table and your food very quickly appears. The service was quick and friendly and the atmosphere great. The food was all very reasonably priced and I finally found somewhere with a decent vegetarian menu (things can be made vegan too!) and the prices match up what you're eating too. Too many times I've paid for a plate of vegetables that have been the same price as the meat options, but not here. Dessert also delish. The pictures don't do the place justice - the bar is properly olde worlde with people drinking out of tankards and the restaurant is in a permanent lean-to with 180 views of the gardens and countryside. We felt we had finally found somewhere that struck the perfect balance between not being really cheap and tacky, but also not being pretentious and over-priced.We plan to go back very soon with more people!

Found a hair in the meal. The waitress said that there would be a substantial discount because of this, and did we want a different serving. We declined, as it would mean eating at a different time to the other diner. When we came to pay, only a small deduction was made. When we repeated what the waitress had said, the landlord said any increase would come out of the young girls wages. He then had the audacity to suggest that it could have been one of my hairs in the food!He was most rude and unsympathetic about the whole issue, and I would urge people not to dine 5here.

This is a very quaint, no frills but very comfortable pub with accommodation. Unfortunately if you are there from “outside” you are made to feel as if your stay is an inconvenience, there is a distinct lack of friendliness during evening service. If you are a local, you are far more likely to be accommodated and given good service. The food is adequate, nothing unpleasant about it but nothing special either. That said, service at breakfast is excellent, friendly and nothing is too much trouble. OK but customer service is in short supply on occasions.

A country inn with local ale and home-made pies - what could possibly go wrong? We were made welcome by the owners/staff and service was friendly and efficient, but everything else was middle-of-the-road. The Squirrel's Nuts ale was so-so (maybe I was spoilt by the Adnams earlier this week) and the steak pie was certainly home-made, with shortcrust pastry, but lacked distinction and was rather dry. I would suggest making it "steak and ale" to add flavour and moisture. The place itself was an old country inn that was trying to be something more and seemed to have got stuck in-between. Even the change of name (from "The Ugly Bug" to "The Norfolk Lurcher") seemed like a corporate rebranding exercise.

So we booked this pub as we know the chef from years ago and know the food will always be great. Family meal to celebrate double birthday of mum and brother. Brother was travelling from London and was 20 mins late due to traffic on a Friday night. We had also booked a high chair for my 16 month old as nanny wanted her to be present... plan was we’d leave as soon as food eaten to get her to bed. There were 10 of us. Well from the minute we arrived the landlady made it clear she wasn’t happy with a toddler. The baby wasn’t making any noise or crying just toddling around. The landlady kept blocking her path and almost physically picking her up! It reached a point where the landlady said I had to keep her in small section of pub which was tough. I ended up having to go to toilet and standing in there for 15 mins at a time because I was made to feel so bad.We were forced to order really quickly and she was clearly annoyed 2 people still hadn’t arrived. When they did arrive (20 mins late) a menu was literally thrust in their face and she asked them to order whilst she stood there. Hadn’t even taken off their coats! Again all very uncomfortable. The other very odd thing was that we’d brought a cake as it was a double birthday. We were told that they could bring it out but we couldn’t cut it or eat it there due to health and safety?! Very strange. We ended up feeling so totally uncomfortable we left before 8.40 declining any further drinks or desserts. Totally ruined a rare family occasion. I accept pubs don’t want kids at night but then don’t accept the booking with high chair! I reiterate she was just walking around, no tears or noise. Very odd concept of hospitality. I won’t return.., toilets aren’t nice enough to spend an hour in! The food was good as always though!

From the minute you walk into this beautiful Inn, you are given a warm welcome firstly by Alfie the Norfolk Lurcher. This is such a lovely Inn and the customer care is second to none. Food is plentiful and delicious. This is our second visit and we will certainly become regulars here.

Stopped for Sunday lunch. Greeted by some really lovely and friendly staff. Plenty of choice on the menu and specials board - I had pheasant breast which was one of the specials. All the food was to a very high standard and the prices don’t break the bank. The whole atmosphere in the pub was lovely - we can’t wait to visit again!

Absolute gem of a place if you can find it!Fantastic food.Fantastic staff.Fantastic drinks. (The ale is very good)Overall a great night, despite being the only table eating on a quiet January night the was a lovely welcoming atmosphere. The menu had so many options I found it hard to choose so my family have decided we need to come back ASAP! Will be returning many more times.

Booked from Abroad, the owners, were most helpful with the process and confirming the presence of garlic in dishes as my wife is alergic to this. The evening was organized superbly, from arrival to depart, the food 4 course menu we three had different items was well presented, and the wines were priced affordable and correctly presented, Coffee was offered inclusive, the add ons for NYE count down was excellent poppers balloons and the actual count down. The band was an added bonus and well played with well known tunes all night long and was much appreciated at a volume where talk was not impaired.the final account was well satisfying no extras added, and superb value for money.Congratulation owners and staff you are to be congratulated, we will return

We booked at the last minute, and were warmly welcomed. After a short drink beside the log burner we were given menus and the specials board was explained. We selected our meals, and then were shown to our table.... a quiet window seat. My wife took the partridge as a starter, and I had the pigeon patty. Lovely! We both wanted fish, and as most of the fish of the day had already been ordered (yes, that good), we both settled for the Cod. Very nicely cooked and served. A great evening in an excellent old country pub. Definitely recommended.... but best to book in advance of course.

Even though we visited during the height of the Christmas party season, we were still able to book a table for two, although we did arrive early in the evening, to avoid the later rush.We were welcomed like old friends and were given a tour of the inn, before settling into the cosy bar area with a drink. A good selection of well-kept ales were on offer. We were offered the specials board and the menu. We placed our orders and were soon invited to our table. The starters were, in a word, superb. Beautiful flavours - I had the goat's cheese and beetroot, prepared by a chef who clearly knows his stuff, but also a decent sized portion - none of your nouveau cuisine nonsense. Before too long, the mains came along. Pork with cider, stilton and apricot for her and the mixed grill for me. Before starting on my meal, I had a quick taste of the pork dish - delicious! This was served with a generous side of vegetables, prepared just right. My mixed grill was huge! A massive pile of beautifully cooked steak, chicken, gammon and sausage, with onion rings, mushroom, tomato, peas and chips. A word of warning: you need to be seriously hungry to eat this meal!!Having very nearly polished that off, we were tempted into having a dessert. With very limited capacity left, we chose the home-made ice creams, which were lovely. (I would have liked to see a rich chocolate one on offer, though.)The waiting staff were excellent - attentive, friendly and helpful. (Even though there were at least 40 people enjoying Christmas parties, so they must have been busy.)The atmosphere is the restaurant was very convivial and we soon got chatting and laughing with other guests and were entertained by a table magician. I suspect our seating was a deliberate ploy by mine host, to encourage guests to socialise. Nice touch. All too soon, it was time to leave, so I went to settle the bill. This came to such a modest amount, that I asked them to check that they had included everything! In summary... what a fantastic find! A proper country inn, serving great beer and superb food at very sensible prices. Would we return? Yes, absolutely, we can't wait and have decided to treat ourselves to a meal here at least once a month. There are lots of other dishes on the menu which need trying!

Found the older couple patronising and unhelpful, lady behind the bar and man who showed us to our table. The lady insisted on taking cash for a round of drinks because using a card was expensive for them, not exactly customer friendly. One of our party is allergic to dogs and to be fair, the man did move him through to the back room when we asked - only for the dog to re-appear when someone opened the door ! Is it OK to have a dog sprawled out in the bar area of a restaurant anyway ?We were there for an important and special birthday celebration. We were told beforehand we could bring a cake, light / blow out candles and take pictures BUT not eat it !! Seems a bit mean to me, suppose they want to sell their own deserts.Food was mostly pretty good apart from the main course they got wrong and was served promptly. It certainly wasn't a cheap meal although to be fair, the furnishings and fittings in the dining area are very nice.Perhaps we need to give it another try.

Very disappointing. We’d visited here some years ago but had a bad experience as the then owners didn’t seem to take too kindly to us bringing children in. Decided to give it another go as we’d heard their daughter had taken the reins. Very friendly greeting, and extremely good service. However the food was not on that same level unfortunately. Mussels were gritty, crab tasteless, stuffing with the roast dinner was actually not recognisable as stuffing, just tasted of flour as did the dauphinois potatoes. Yorkshire puddings rubbery. On the plus side there was plenty of gravy with the roast dinner! Definitely won’t be returning.

Usted no será decepcionado.

Really friendly and comfortable old English dining experience. Liked the way the menu was presented to you on a large blackboard at your table in the bar, ( thus helping myopic individuals, like myself, who've left their specs. in the car ! ). Fish dishes were excellent and we went back to the restaurant at the end of our stay , one week later, for a final meal ( and also last chance to pat the resident pub dog !! )

Just had the worst customer service experience for a meal. My parents along aside my wife, newborn daughter and I turned up for a family meal, which was booked 5 days before. I had taken 1 step through the door was met with an older man who was aggressive and said they do not allow pushchairs in the restaurant, said we could bring our baby in the car seat only. My parents being inside, I said we will have to go somewhere else in this case as my daughter is only 6 weeks old and cannot be kept in her car seat for more than an hour. Baring in mind as we entered this establishment there were dogs running around, some off their leads. This said "gentleman" then laughed and said "what ever", then said "children are not as well behaved as dogs"! We will not go back there again. As I am guessing owner is very rude. Parents said younger man behind bar was pleasant. Smell was not great, good for dogs owners but for a meal not very nice!

I visited this restaurant today after 3 previous visits. Today we were meeting our son , his wife and their 6 week old baby. It was their first visit to a restaurant since their baby was born and they wanted to bring their buggy into the restaurant as their baby was asleep. However the older owner met them aggressively at the door saying they could only bring in the baby in a car seat. There is plenty of space between the tables and this would have been safer for my Grandchild. My husband said but you allow dogs that take up more space . However the owner became very loud saying a dog is much better behaved then children and laughed. He was showing off to people he obviously knew in the bar area who joined in loudly making me feel very uncomfortable and couldn’t get out there quick enough. The older owner is a bully and needs to have customer service training as you do not talk to a customer this way. I advise no parents with young children to visit this place as it is very outdated . Babies are not allowed to remain in car seats for long periods as advised by medical professionals. In the car seat they are on the ground and whilst we were in the bar a cat and dog were roaming without supervision and I would not have put my grandchild on a floor with animals roaming. The seating area where we sat also smell of animals and needed cleaning so was glad to leave and eat in a restaurant that smelt clean with friendly helpful staff. Please will the owners be honest and put on their website that they only accept adults and animals so other young families will not be humiliated in the future.

We visited this restaurant to celebrate my husband's 82nd birthday with our daughter and son-in-law. It's a bit tricky to find and we 'went the long way round' on our return journey, but it's worth persevering! From the moment we entered we were felt welcome. The choice of food is excellent with 'specials' as well as the standard menu. We all enjoyed the dishes we choose. The décor and ambience in the restaurant is just what you'd expect in a country pub and we were very pleased with the spacious table we were given. So nice not to be crammed on top of each other as happens in many restaurants! We will go again.

By far the best meal I have ever had in a restaurant. Unusually for a restaurant they had a wine that I like. The meal was excellent in every way with a wonderful choice including my favourites i.e. crab cocktail for starter and roast 1/4 duck for main course. Instead of putting the diners all in the same area and shutting part of the restaurant off we were nicely spaced out so we could converse with no danger of being overheard. Fantastic service and ambience.

This wonderful country pub that is nicely tucked away in the Norfolk countryside is well worth a visit. Service from start to finish was very good. Quality and variety of food was really really good - we had a variety from a vegetarian Pattie to liver and bacon to a fish salad - all were very very good. The place itself is just how your imagine and want a nice country pub Why 4/5? Small quibble with table set up - for 8 to tables pushed together with big legs at the end so the 4 people sitting at the end of each table were quite uncomfortable.

My Granddad, Ron Henery (R.I.P.), wouldn’t settle for anything but Lims. I’ve been coming here since I was a lad, barely tall enough to see over the counter. Every time I visit Loddon, it brings back cheerful memories. The chips are excellent, and the fish is, without a doubt, the best by a country mile.
