Nice restaurant and pleasant atmosphere. Staff were friendly and attentive, good service. Food was unfortunately disappointing and is now priced too high in my opinion. For starter I had Chicken, pork & pistachio terrine, pickled radish, pistachio mayonnaise and crispy leeks (£9) The Terrine was quite dry, with not enough of the pickled radish/acid elements to balance it out. The mayo was a nice addition and enhanced the overall pistachio flavour delivery of the dish, crispy leaks were a complimentary finishing touch. For main I had Fillet steak, blue cheese arancini, beetroot puree, asparagus (ran out of the baby gem lettuce) and a port reduction. (£37.50) Fillet steak was significantly overcooked, with so little of the port reduction that I had to order a separate peppercorn sauce (£4.50 for some unfathomable reason) after it was served. In hindsight it was my mistake not to send this back. The blue cheese arancini internally had great flavour & texture but had been burnt on the outside. The asparagus was undercooked likely due to them only realising they were out of baby gem lettuce after my order had been taken and they had started the dish as I chose from a selection of alternatives. The beetroot puree was watery and grainy, not executed well at all. All in all, good dishes in theory but executed poorly. Shame about this, must have been an off night as I've been half a dozen times before and always had a good experience. I'll return again eventually expecting their usual quality does too.

We visited Tykes to celebrate our first wedding anniversary after getting married at Sandburn Hall last year! We wanted to come back and reminisce and it didn’t disappoint. We were greeted very quickly and shown to our table in the window which was lovely. Our waitress, Alice, was fantastic and couldn’t do enough for us. She knew it was our anniversary and congratulated us straight away which we thought was a special and personal touch. Even though she was serving a few tables, Alice still had time to chat to us and ask us questions about our wedding day. We had the bottle of Pinot Grigio rose to drink. To start with we had the bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar - it was delicious! 4 pieces of delicious, warm, soft and crusty bread to dip in a pot of oil and vinegar. For mains, I had the chicken breast with sweet potato fondant, broccoli purée, caramelised shallots, crispy chicken skin and chicken jus - yum! The chicken was tender and the flavours just worked! My husband had the 10oz sirloin which was unreal. Cooked medium rare (although more medium than rare). Homemade chips were delicious! For dessert, we shared the dark chocolate and almond torte and some ice cream - definitely one we’d get again! And to top it all off, Alice bought over a plate of brownies and strawberries with ‘Happy Anniversary’ written with chocolate sauce, given to us on the house! A very special touch. As we couldn’t eat all of our desserts, we took most of it away in a box to finish tomorrow! A place we’d definitely come back. Would like to try the steak Wednesdays and a Sunday lunch! Thank you Tykes!

We visited Tykes restaurant with the recommendation of its reputation with amazing food, attentive service and atmosphere. We were so impressed and enjoyed a fabulous evening with delicious food and drinks for an anniversary meal. For our starters we had the chicken pork and pistachio terrine, and the pork and plack pudding Bon Bons from the special menu. The terrine with the pistachio was a wonderful combination, complimenting the other. The bon bons were perfectly crisp, filled generously with tender pork and black pudding. For mains, we had a fish dish; sea bass with saffron creamed leaks, potato cake, blistered tomatoes and asparagus from the specials menu. We managed to order the last one, as this popular dish was in demand. It was again cooked to perfection with the perfect elements to compliment it. We also had the herb and hazelnut crusted pork tenderloin with potato pavé, charred sweetcorn and a wholegrain mustard cream sauce. The dish was full of flavour, with the pork complimented with the delicious mustardcream sauce. For dessert, we had a passion fruit tart, raspberry macaron and mango sorbet which was refreshing and a perfect sweet for summer evening. We also had the irish cream tiramisu from the specials menu which was a delightful dish, well balanced with its layers and a twist on a classic. There was so much thought and creativity given into the menu. The presentation was beautiful and portions were a perfect size, with a great value in price. Service was smooth, with friendly and attentive staff. Smiles and a happy to help manner. We received our food in a timely manner and were asked each time how we found our meals, with an offering of further drinks. We thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and experience here from start to finish. Recommend highly for any occasion. We will be back again.

Could not fault the restaurant whatsoever. The food was delicious, the lovely waitress Mia, recommended the soup and I have to say it was wonderful tasty and hot. The main courses was just as nice, I had the Pork that came with a pot of mustard sauce and veg and hubby had the chicken which was cooked perfectly. All in all a wonderful meal served by a friendly happy waitress who could not do enough for you. We’ll definitely be back.

£4.50 for peppercorn sauce!! Our bill for 2 adults and 2 kids meals = £122.50!! Really average food for that sort of money. We have been dozens of times over the last 10 years with some large family gatherings as well, but the food is average now, service was ok, but quality of food overall is really not worth the cost!! Lots of other local pubs with superior food and better atmosphere overall. Tykes only seems interested in golfers or wedding guests!!! We won't return that's for sure, which is a massive shame as the building is beautiful and restaurant has huge potential!!! I've never felt so disappointed with a meal. Even my 6 year old was disappointed with her cheesy garlic bread starter and tomato pasta main course!! She left nearly all of it and complained it was bland and dry! Very disappointed family and we won't return even though we live very locally!!

We are regular visitors to Grifton forest since getting engaged there in 2019 and have used Tykes every day we have been here. It has always been enjoyable food and excellent service however this year the service was cold. We popped in at lunchtime for a snack before our evening booking and ended up leaving before we could order as the welcome was cold and we felt we were an inconvenience. My husband convinced me to keep our evening booking and I am glad I did as the staff member that served us that evening and Sunday lunch was friendly and engaging ( everyone one else was stony faced and just dumped our food/drinks in front of us) it's thanks to her I have kept this review to a 4*. She is definitely an asset to the team and if I lived closer I would snap her up to work in my pub. Thank you for keeping the happy memory alive for us. Hope you enjoy the cocktail we left for you.

No one came to take our drinks order for 15 minutes after we were seated, and we weren’t given water for the table in that time either. When we eventually ordered our drinks, we asked if we could place our food order too as we’d had plenty time to look at the menu, however we were told we were in a queue so we would have to wait. We waited a further 10 minutes for our drinks to arrive and watched as the bar and waiting staff did everything but serve their customers - chatting by the bar, drinking coffee and texting on their phones - all as as our bottle of wine sat on top of the bar. Our drinks finally arrived and were plonked onto the table without glasses, so we had yet another wait for those to arrive. The waiter returned with the glasses and left, leaving the wine in the cooler, so we opened and poured the wine ourselves. When it was our turn to place our food order, we ordered some bread and oil, ironically under the ‘while you wait section’ on the menu. By this point, we had been seated for just shy if an an hour and were very hungry. Needless to say, the (sadly burnt) bread arrived after our starters, and without the dipping oil. We had to flag down a waitress to ask for the oil to be brought over. The food itself was very good - good quality and good portion sizes, although overpriced. Tykes would be a pleasant spot if it wasn’t for the bad service, which really let it down and impacted our experience. Very basic table service was completely overlooked and the staff were not attentive in the slightest, it seemed like they didn’t want to be there. I would genuinely suggest management consider a refresh on the basics of table service for their team to create a more enjoyable experience.

We were staying 3 nights at Sandburn Hall with breakfast and dinner jncluded at Tykes. Breakfast was delicious with lots of choice. We found the evening meal had a restrictive menu if you stayed for 3 nights. I would have like more choice with perhaps some salads or pasta dishes. We had been for a meal on on boxing day and they had a fabulous menu and everything was delicious. The meals we had were good and the service was great.

Ate here twice during a weeks stay at Griffon Forest. Came for dinner with friends on the Wednesday - steak night! Which was very tasty ( according to my husband!). Also had Sunday lunch - we all had a roast, all meals were so tasty & good portion sizes. On both visits the service was great, friendly staff. Also as as guest at Griffon Forest if you show your lodge key you get a 10% discount, nice touch! Nice 10 minute walk from the lodges to the restaurant, good idea to bring a small torch as the path is not lit that well of a night time.

Frequently visited Tykes over several years and found them excellent in all areas, our last visit in November was quite a different one. We had the Sunday roast, potatoes were so shrivelled and dried out, carrots raw and the veg consisted of a small breakfast bowl for 3 people. Overpriced and sadly an experience I found disheartening.

I will start by saying the hotel is fantastic. Also breakfasts in Tykes were superb. Also my wifes two meals beef cheeks and monkfish were very nice. The problem for me was I love steaks, the restaurant offered Sirloin steaks my favourite which I have had many at various restaurants. The first night the steak was extremely fatty, not just on the sides but throughout the steak. I complained and the manager advised the chef cut the steak from an outside joint, he had seen the fat waste on my plate. The second night was my birthday and I wanted to try again. The waitress who was the only member of staff I had issue with advised me to expect the same again in a not to friendly way. It was a choice for me sirloin again or a burger. The steak was no better, this time the chef attended. I asked why the steak was served if they knew the joint had issues, just got a very sorry and no charge. So yes we would certainly revisit the hotel but Tykes for dinner, not sure

In the interest of improvement and not just slating some place, I wonder if there’s management issues here that could be sorted with a bit of effort/strategy? I concur with many other recent posts that service was below average. Not bringing menus, asking for cutlery that didn’t arrive and some other small basics that weren’t right - symptoms of a new team or one without direction. Even with casual/low paid staff - the right management can have them on the ball. Food was ok, gravy delicious on roast and portions plentiful but desserts disappointing for price. Beautiful cosy venue with that fire upon entrance with the nights closing in and days a little colder. Hope they get sorted.

Though not as good a choice Service not at all good, found it difficult to get waiter attention. We ordered main meals and was told a little later not available . So re ordered. We’ve visited Tykes Restaurant many times before and may do so again. In my opinion, the portion sizes and menu variety have got steadily smaller over the years, whilst the prices have risen considerably. On this occasion, we were hurried to our table, waiting an age for a bread board, felt rushed by staff, had no salt on the table, small chicken pieces were hidden in masses of greenery, the coffee was not hot, and our anniversary meal fell well short of the treat we hoped for. If we ever have a repeat performance, we’ll certainly not return. Very disappointing, especially for the money we paid.

Been here a few times when visiting the area and this time was extremely disappointing. I ordered the chicken, leek and truffle ballotine. This was not good. The chicken tasted like it had been overly boiled and wrapped in leeks. No seasoning at all and truffle had not been within 100 metres of this dish. (Which is the only reason it would warrant the high price). The side was a “confit” potato and chicken skins with a jus. There were no chicken skins on my dish and the jus was extremely bland. The potatoes were equally dissapointing. Such a shame as we loved this restaurant last year. I had the poached peaches with a crumb for dessert. These were still hard, had little syrup and the crumb was a crushed shortbread. Such a shame as the staff were all lovely and welcoming but we will not be returning.

I am being generous giving a poor rating as I have had some pleasant evenings here too, service has gone down hill in January.Overall a terrible service by a rude, unhelpful and unpleasant manager with cold fold served separately,. Manager is rude. On two occasions we have booked a table for 3 and been seated at a table for 2 with a 3rd chair added. On asking for one of the empty tables for 3 I and my friends were left waiting until another waitress seated us somewhere else. The manager didn’t even acknowledge usThe food…. Last week all three Sunday dinners were cold. One of our party opted for a steak this week - surely this could be served hot! Nope, neither were the chips and when asked if the food was okay I replied it was cold and the waitress said ‘Very good, enjoy’.The steak was recooked but this meal was served separately. So ‘out for dinner together’ was not an option. When I received the bill I asked to speak to the manager. I addressed his attitude explaining that he had been rude to me on both occasions. He said he was sorry about that. After explaining the events I asked him whether I should pay the bill or what it was worth, he asked for the amount on the bill which I paid and said I would leave a review as this was totally unacceptable. And here it is

If you’re staying at the Griffon Forest holiday lodges, an evening meal at Tykes Restaurant comes highly recommended by me.Despite a lively wedding reception going on at Sandburn Hall, the atmosphere within Tykes restaurant itself was warm, relaxed and welcoming. We were informed the menu had just changed the day before and it reflected the change in seasons to autumn. Hand on heart the food was absolutely amazing. The contrast of the cheese soufflé with tomato chutney worked so well. The beef fillet was very tender, I ate every scrap something as a very fussy meat eater I rarely do. The combinations of food on your plate were brilliant but non more so than with my poached apples, croissant french toast and clotted cream desert. Best meal I’ve had in a long time. Talent created that menu and talent executed it. Enough said!

Maybe we were unlucky that 3 of the choices were roasts and 3 others were burgers. If we eat out we both like more adventourous choices . Prices were reasonable, portions were good, wine not so expensive. Tables were well spaced out in these covid times and all staff front of house worn face coverings to protect customers, few customers did the same to protect the staff. Wait staff friendly and helpful, our server even checked with the kitchen if we could order off menu (could not) at least she tried. One thing tykes and sandburn really need to sort out is their WASP problem. Sitting outside for drinks it often comes with the territory but they were relentless! 7 - 8 buzzing around constantly. Nothing around to deter them ie wasp traps or citronella. Even INSIDE the venue they are all over. In the wedding room there must have been about 12 crawling up the windows and buzzing around which was quite distracting during the speeches as a wasp freak outer! The food in the golf bar was also absolutely TERRIBLE. The main restaurant is a lot better.

Me and my partner had a few meals here over the week while staying at Griffon Forest, the food and service were great on each occasion. We much preferred the menu on Sunday and it was great value with having 3 courses for £24 (or around that) on Sundays only, so would recommend trying out the restaurant on this day. All staff were friendly and attentive, we were served mostly, on both occasions, by a young girl with nice nails who gave a friendly and relaxed service, she really is a credit to the team! There are plenty of options for vegetarians, and I really appreciated having options that weren't just meat substitutes as you tend to find in some places. On the Sunday I had a vegetable curry, and a mushroom & feta burger on our most recent visit. Both were really nice. Would recommend anyone staying at Griffon Forest to stop by here, the walk to the restaurant is especially nice and the 10% off offer for guests is a great bonus.

We were greeted by a lovely young lady and seated promptly after a short while a waiter came over to take our drinks order he made us feel at ease as he was wearing a mask as was all the other staff. We ordered our meals and were not disappointed I had the fish and chips and the fish was beautiful as was the chips with a homemade tartar sauce and my husband had the 12oz gammon egg and chips and he loved his too. The next day we decided we wanted to go for Sunday lunch so I rang and they fitted us in so I do recommend that you book in advance for Sunday and I'm not surprised why as the food was amazing my husband ordered the roast beef and Yorkshire pudding and when it came out it was huge you get plenty of meat and I big yorkie pud it also came with side of roasties, cauliflower cheese and seasonal veg I had the stuffed pepper which was very tasty. We decided to have pudding and they were amazing too. Homemade sticky toffee pud and apple and blackberry crumble were devine. We were staying at griffon forest nearby and were glad of the walk home. We utilised the click and collect service yesterday and though the food was just as lovely, unfortunately they did not have the variety usually on offer. They are currently having a refurbishment and plan to open beginning of August - we will be there!

Really nice place for Sunday lunch. My only concern is you can not get your beef anything below well done which is a shame as it is basically tough. Nice staff and ambience. Lovely grounds and setting.

Was told this place was dog friendly - after driving 300 miles to stay in accommodation next to venue was told they can’t serve food to dog owners on a Saturday as too busy - wasn’t even busy ??

Thoroughly enjoyed the food itself, but the whole experience was severely let down by the waitress! She had a horrific attitude, acted like she didn't want to be there! Also, when my partner went to the bar to get us drinks (as he wanted to see what was on offer) the waitress came up to me and asked "is he bored of you already?" So rude! Honestly left me upset for the rest of the night

Had a great meal once again on New Year’s Eve. We both had cod for main and it was cooked to perfection and the mussels starter was perfect too. Excellent service as always. We stay at Griffin Forest so it’s great to have such a good restaurant just walking distance away. Will be returning again.

We booked a table for evening meal and got the one we usually have. There did seem initially to be a lack of staff but eventually there were 3 staff on table duty.Unfortunately Paul is no longer there but has been made up to manager of the Sportsman bar within the complex. We had mussels and ham hock terrine, the latter very dry.Lamb shank, the meat fell off the bone, and mixed grill.Desserts were bread and butter pudding which was layered and soggy and lemoncelli mouse with raspberries.Overall it was pleasant but i can see why people have reservations when staff disappear for ages and leave you with dirty plates for long times.Very limited "cafe" type menu rather than previous restaurant menu.

Visited, whilst staying at Griffon Forest, excellent valuewith main courses at only £12, the roast beef was delicious, thickly sliced and perfectly pink as requested, a good selection of fresh vegetables, the only criticism is that the parsnips were a little underwhelming, pale and tepid. My partner had the roast pork which was also delicious if not quite such z generour portion. Well worth a visit, 10 minute walk from the Lodges and 10% discount as a guest at Griffon Forest

We were staying in the nearby Griffin Forest Lodges and visited Tykes for Sunday lunch. The service was fabulous and the food amazing. We had a huge plate of roast beef which came with a lovely selection of vegetables and fabulous desserts. I thoroughly recommend the restaurant and if you are staying at the Lodges, it is just a short walk away and you receive 10% off your bill.

We dined at Tykes Resturant last night, 2 Adults, 2 Children. It was absolutely fantastic! The food was outstanding, the restaurant itself is beautiful, staff great. Menu choices are plentiful. My husband had a steak and it was cooked to perfection, kids food perfect. Such a delightful experience and treat, we will be back. Well Done Chef and Sandburn Hall.

To celebrate a family members birthday we decided to eat here, what a mistake! Vegetarian meal was disgusting I wouldn’t of fed it to my dog. Table service was very poor I had to ask for my jug of water 20 minutes after everyone else got there drinks. Complained to management and was offered 15% of our next visit....which will definitely NOT HAPPEN

My partner and I visited Types for our anniversary meal in August. Although the service and location were brilliant the food was very disappointing. I don't often complain but felt it was worthy of mentioning how bad it was that night. There were various things wrong with the meal but I don't want to go into that as this review is more about the professionalism and courtesy we were shown to make up for that meal.

We visited around 1 pm on a Thursday, it was hot and there were still tables available outside. I went inside and ordered drinks, the only table service is when your food is brought out. I went back inside and ordered food, we went for the tuna and cheese flatbread and roast beef and gravy ciabatta, and a side of chips. The food didn’t take long both sandwiches were nice but salad very limp but coleslaw was nice, the chips weren’t great but not bad, just didn’t eat them. For food and drinks it came to a very reasonable £22.95. I’d definitely visit again, not a problem with the food but there really isn’t any service even though there was enough staff to give it, no table service, very slow in clearing tables causing wasps and flies

Meal while staying at Griffon Lodge. We both enjoyed our meals. I had the duo of duck and my partner had a mixed grill. Both dishes were enjoyable, the service was fantastic and we thought it was reasonable. We paid £44 but left £50 to contribute as a tip and that was with two alcoholic drinks. If staying in the lodges you do receive 10% discount on meals and drinks. Will definitely visit again when back at the lodges. Our four month old baby slept while we are which made enjoying a hot meal even better!

This is a lovely place but let down by how chaotic it was . I got two scones and two coffees took the scones to our table and was told the drinks would be brought across, The scones were hard ( certainly not fresh ) I had trouble biting mine I had to cut it up to eat it , it was dry , I also noticed someone took a scone back I heard the girl say it must of got mixed up with the fresh ones , ours must have been last weeks ,It was 15 minutes before we got our drinks I noticed several tables hadn't got theres either , people were going to the counter to complain by this time . Just needs a bit more organising, who wants to eat a scone without a drink !!!..on the other hand we will go again to try the Gardeners lunch which looked delicious
