TWENTYONE cafe + kitchen in Mendip

Popped in on a quiet sunny March time. It had a few customers which grew in numbers during our time there. We had a lovely greeting, and teh quality of service was kept up during our visit. The food was tasty and reasonably priced

We visited on a quiet afternoon for coffees. There was only one other table occupied which was probably a good thing as the service was slow. After finishing my drink I visited the toilet and was disappointed to see it was grubby - not a place I would return to or where I would want to eat.

We came here around 12pm on a Friday. We expected it to be busy but to our suprise we were seated instantly. The food was good and service was friendly.

Great cafe for a snack or main meal in an ideal location near the cathedral and grounds. lovely ambience outside in the market area. Grab a table early as it is a busy location. Special mention to the service that although were possibly short of staff, were coping the best they could. Recommend.

From the moment i entered i was nicely welcomed and was told it was waiter service. I was shown upstairs, my drink order was taken and, when the drink arrived my food order (roast pork - very nice) was taken. After about 10 minutes, the roast arrived and i took about 12 minutes to eat it. I then waited over 25 minutes for any further action: other people's orders were taken, no effort to take my dirty plate as the waiter [different from the original one]. After 30 minutes i had to stop the petite waiter and ask if i could have a dessert please; once my order was taken, normal service was resumed. This is a popular restaurant in the middle of Wells and yes, they serve excellent food but the service was slow that Sunday.

Very disappointed with our lunch - we ordered two cauliflower cheese - dish had no taste of cheese, cauliflower undercooked and I would say the bland milky ‘cheese’ sauce was likely a packet mix. And hardly any of this sauce. Someone needs to show the chef what a tasty Cauliflower cheese dish is with lashings of melted cheese etc - it’s really not a difficult dish to get right! Interior of restaurant is nice and service good.

First time visiting Wells , went to have a coffee at this cafe . It was busy so asked to sit upstairs . Was allowed to sit upstairs , but got the feeling we didn’t want to be catered for . We were given menus and told someone would come and take our order . Sat 10 minutes waiting , when a large party turned up , husband went to order and was told they would come and take our order , however. we were completely ignored so in the end we just walked out .

Be careful to ask for a takeaway coffee. Told to stand by the door for 10 minutes with my 87 year old mother. An apology for upsetting us not for the action of staff…..

We had a busy day walking around Wells, visiting the Cathedral and Bishops Palace. We fancied a Sunday roast dinner so popped in here. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The roast was gorgeous and there was lots of it. They even offered us more vegetables but we were full.

Had a really nice time there. Food was awesome and the people were really nice too.

Went here for breakfast with my girlfriend and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. Everything on the full English was perfect, the coffee was great and Alex is an excellent barista. Would recommend to anybody looking to enjoy a coffee besides the cathedral

Called in on a recent visit to Wells. The restaurant didn't look particularly clean, dirty floor and tables. We ordered mushroom burgers, and were surprised to find just a large mushroom and salad in a bun...when is a mushroom a burger! The bun was nice and overall it was OK, but not what was expected. The staff weren't particularly friendly, just talked to each other, nobody asked if the food was OK. We didn't feel very welcome.

Called into this restaurant while in Wells as it was the only place serving food in the afternoon. Being vegetarian we ordered the mushroom burgers, what can I say, it was just a large mushroom, with salad in a bun. It was a very nice bun, but when does a mushroom classify as a burger! We both ate it and yes it was OK but not what was expected. The restaurant wasn't that clean and tables weren't that clean. We weren't made to feel particularly welcome and the staff whilst not being unfriendly, weren't really friendly, nobody asked if the food was OK. They just talked to each other.

We booked online but the online booking doesn't work - but not a problem as they had a spare table. It was extremely busy and the staff where run off their feet, covering inside and out - however service was great, friendly and efficient. Food wait a little but it was so worth it - beef burger was amazing and chicken burger lovely and fresh. Good size portions too. Highly recommend- if you're not in a rush and happy to watch the world go by in this stunning town.

Excellent meal, very warm friendly and professional staff.

Disappointed considering other reviews. Lime/lemon/coconut cake was a tad undercooked so unpleasant to eat.. Elderflower drink was served with a chipped glass, replaced by a hot one dripping with water from the dishwasher. Staff seemed rather glum.

Lovely food in a great spot to watch the world go by, in a beautiful historic city... it's only let down by the young team of waiting staff who's hearts don't seem to be in it

Visited Wells one day when the market was running and spotted this place. Came back the next day to try it out and it didn’t disappoint. Friendly staff and good food. Can eat in or out (we were outside as we had the dog with us…and the staff kindly brought water for him). Ordered chicken burger and (I think) a mackerel dish with an egg on…anyway, both really good and the chips, which I wanted not to eat, were stunning so all got finished off. If we are back in Wells we will be back to 21.

What a shame. This place has gone down hill. Must have changed hands! The service was very lack lustre & the waitress was totally disinterested. The menu was small & uninspiring. We had booked a table beforehand having asked for a specific table which was not available to us when we arrived, so we had to eat upstairs. Out of the way & mostly forgotten. Won't be going back. A real shame as this used to be a great place.

This place got top reviews so decided to stop for coffee and cake. Started sitting outside but the wasps were too attracted to our scones, jam and cream so we moved indoors. Good coffee, tempting cakes and a good atmosphere.

A different but delicious breakfast. Poached eggs with avocado and bubble and squeak, fried egg and roasted tomatoes. Service was fab and would definitely return.

Very nice Coffee place in this historical Location. Can't think of a place with better Views in the old town. Very tasty coffee and friendly service.

My friends and i have really enjoyed our lunch at the TWENTYONE Cafe . The staff were all nice. It was a good service.

Good spot outside to watch the bustle on the square. A little slow, but portions were admirable and food well-received. Ample and tasty mozz & tomato salad and an unusually good burger which felt wholesome, held its form well, and had a nice Italian seasoning twist. Chips had a certain authentic French frites “je ne sais quoi”.

This was a chance encounter when looking for a place to have lunch. The meal was excellent and the service friendly and swift.

Arrived an hour before closing expecting a cold shoulder and instead were welcomed in with open arms. Nachos were delicious, chips were “as chips should be” according to our friends, and the staff were really nice and friendly. We don’t live near here so can’t frequent but would love to come back when we’re down this way again.

Spent 2 hours on a raining day watching the world go by. The food was excellent, especially the garlic bread! The cakes are made on site and huge portions! The service was excellent and full of smiles. Highly recommended.

Lovely breakfast at this cafe this morning over looking the square after a morning walk. The almond croissant and mushroom bagel were excellent.

Beautiful cafe and location, but let themselves down with service. We wanted a lazy coffee on our visit to Wells did not ask for 20 mins to be served, 20 mins for coffee to arrive and 20 mins to get the bill - especially in the exposed sun with staff refusing seats inside. Had to go in ourselves and re ask for tap water and sugar. The service was utterly miserable with no apology for wait times.

Called in on recommendation of a friend who is a fan and more than exceeded expectations. Friendly staff with an imaginative and varied menu. A pleasure to visit. Food a pleasing mixture of traditional favourites such as croque m'siuer and variations on a tapas theme.

Absolute gem of a find. I came two weeks ago with friends one of which has a throat issue so only can eat certain foods. You couldn’t have been more helpful and made what can usually be difficult really enjoyable and wonderful. I’ve come back today with my Mum for breakfast and the experience has once again been great! This is the first establishment my other half and I visited when moving to Wells 6 months ago. Most likely because that it's the most obviously placed non-chain well ran casual foodie place. The food was great. Not impeccable, but great with a good variety on the menu. I loved the butter chicken burger and the Mrs loves the egg and avocado. However, we gradually stopped visiting as the food has somewhat taken a downturn. They changed chefs I belive somewere along the line and ever since then the food quality had reduced and all of the exciting items such as the chicken burger have been removed. What was our first recommendation 4-6 months ago for friends and family is now simply an option if you'd like a nice view of the centre of Wells.

Lovely location on the square. Food was ok. Thought it was a bit odd taking a wheelie bin out and bin bags through the restaurant whilst customers were eating. Additionally opening a trap door in front of the toilet for about half the time we were there which was only occasionally roped off seemed a significant safety issue. Perhaps restocking the cellar should be done out of hours or at least a quiet time of day
