Having now tried the ice cream here on the basis that previous poor reviews can’t be that accurate, I’d say this ice cream isn’t that great quality. There is a slight graininess texture, the flavouring isn’t all that strong either. I had the rum and raisin and didn’t taste like it and I’m not sure there were many raisins. To be fair, I do know great ice cream or gelato when I taste it - coming from Scotland we have many Italian ice cream parlours. Therefore a negative review is based on a high standard benchmark which is difficult. Perhaps a suggestion would be to make ice cream with fewer flavours and do them really well? Perhaps advertise how the ice cream is made - local milk/cream etc ; freshly made daily!!! These are only suggestions of course. I’m terms of the staff they were smiling and pleasant - no complaints there.

Worst ice cream I've ever had. Stood in a long queue only to be served with a cone full of the most liquid ice cream I've ever had, It started running out of the cone the second I stepped out of the door. I like to support independents, but advise giving this place a wide birth.

What awful miserable customer service...the ice cream is nothing special...but expensive...staff rarely smile... I asked if she sold the milk from the farm down the way....you'd think I'd gone to the loo on the floor judging by the response I got! Seriously...if someone opened another ice cream shop in allonby I'd go there first... The rest of the food places nearby are very nice... Avoid this lot like the plague....they are new management apparently... Bring back the old ones... Just awful from start to finish....such an unfriendly money grabbing place... No stars would be more appropriate

My grandmother, who turned 90 this year, used to visit Allonby in the 1930s and 1940s and used to have ice cream from Twentymans. Now resident in the West Midlands, when my wife and I made our holiday plans in Cumbria, she said we absolutely must go to Twentymans, and solemnly gave me a £5 note for our ice cream. The ice cream is absolutely delicious - I had chocolate and cinder toffee (the cinder toffee being vanilla with lovely big lumps of cinder toffee (honeycomb) mixed in. It did melt rather quickly, but since we went on the hottest day ever recorded in the UK that is forgivable! Definitely something that must be done if you're visiting the lovely village that is Allonby.

With a slogan like best ice cream in the world I would assume you would set your bar high. Sadly this was not the case. The ice cream as others have said melts really quickly and it wasn’t a very hot day. Between us we had chocolate, black cherry, vanilla, salted caramel cheesecake and cinder toffee. The last two tasted like the vanilla with the odd honeycombs throw in or a bit of caramel sauce. The chocolate bar and squirty cream (which I didn’t ask for) were cheap and nasty. They completely got my order wrong after several requests and I ended up getting scoops and toppings I didn’t want and to be honest I couldn’t be bothered to complain as I didn’t think they would understand what they’d done. As others have said a tub from the supermarket has tasted better. All in all a disappointing memory and sadly the whole reason we came to Allonby for mum. The only positive tip for others I could give is the black cherry is pleasant. Honestly I wish they’d rethink their brand. As a seaside town Allonby needs all the tourists it can get. This place could be a shining star attraction. There are cheap fixes. Choose quality toppings and chocolate, bring your ice cream back to whatever it was.I don’t very often post negatively but this was so bad I had to. I really hope that this place turns around and not just for itself.

We decided to visit Twentymans homemade ice cream as our children enjoy ice cream. We chose a mega sundae with two flavours and the choice of a confectionery bar. The sundae is served in a large plastic cup which stops ice cream leaking out. Looks very impressive but once you’ve tasted the ice your opinion may change. The ice cream tastes similar to cheap supermarket varieties, quickly melting and turning to a watery slosh. In short, save your money and buy a quality tub of ice cream from a local supermarket!

Homemade ice cream? We don’t think so!We chose to visit Twentymans as we have previously visited other homemade ice cream parlours and enjoyed them greatly. The queue was around 10 deep with good social distancing observed. Our children and ourselves picked the Mega Sundae in a large plastic cup. The section of ice creams we chose ranged from chocolate, chocolate mint, caramel and vanilla. A selection of confectionery was also available with each mega sundae. At nearly £20 for 4 ice cream sundae we were hoping for a tasty treat and a memorable experience. Unfortunately we were to be bitterly disappointed with the quality of the ice cream and chocolate confectionery. The ice cream tasted watery and lacked any depth of flavour, comparable to a cheap supermarket flavoured ice cream, quickly melting to a weak watery mush. The chocolate confectionery Whisper bar didn’t actually taste like a normal Whisper bar so it’s questionable if we were given a genuine Whisper bar or a cheaper alternative?Overall a disappointing experience, overrated, over priced ice cream. The initial impression of a large cup of ice cream doesn’t live up to expectations. Homemade ice cream? Twentymans have reputedly been making ice cream for the last 100 years, I hope the quality of their products improve to allow the business to survive a few more years. Save your money and buy a quality tub of ice cream from the local supermarket or visit a local farm which actually produces “quality homemade ice cream “

Twentyman'so is a typical village store that provides a basic food service with a decent amount of wines and beers on offer as well. Then there's the sweets, and homemade ice cream section. The sweets are mainly decent £1 bags of various types to titillate yer sweet tooth. There's a good selection of ice cream flavours but, although people come from all over the area to indulge in items such as the 'Allonby Whopper', I find the ices are overrated. There's always queues mainly on days when the weather's decent but, in my humble opinion, this could also be because there's no one who does homemade ice cream for miles, and the ice cream doesn't even come close to the genuine, Italian homemade ice cream that we're blessed with in Scotland. Twentyman'so have also started doing deconstructed cheesecakes in a jar. Look great but, I found them very greasy but, once again that's my opinion.

On top of this we couldn't help noticing the lack of cleanliness inside the ice cream cabinet, the glass looked as if it hadn't been cleaned for quite some time and the debris around the tubs was appalling, you could understand this if it was late in the day but we were there at 11am. Every year we visit cumbria and go to allonby for ice creams, it’s one of the highlights of our week and has been for 15 years. Sadly the staff (the older ones) are so miserable and rude. We spend £40+ most times and yes have a long order but I thought that was the point of a shop?! The ladies make it clear we are a burden whilst the children decide what their having. It is almost like they’d prefer we didn’t spend money. If we didn’t have young children to entertain we probably wouldn’t return. It’s such a shame as it’s a lovely shop but after seeing many other reviews I’m glad to see it’s not just us treated this way. On another note, the ice cream is also very watery now, even in the icy cold Cumbrian weather half of it has run down your arm before you’ve made it back to the car. It didn’t do that years ago.

I though it was just me, but having read other reviews, it would seem that for service is standard here. We went in for ice cream and were ignored by all three members of staff behind the counter. The older lady and man there were particularly unfriendly. Having stood for some time at the ice cream side we had to ask to be served. Service with a small it definitely isn't!! Terrible service and poor manners. We spent a considerable sun on ice cream, cake and sweets for two parties but were made to feel like we were an inconvenience. The ice cream itself is ok - not amazing and here in Manchester, pretty much every ice cream parlour has that many flavours and more, most taking better than here. Also the only way to get sauce or toppings is to buy separate pots which is wasteful of packaging and trying to get them tipped onto the ice cream once outside when you will find, even on a cold day, that your ice cream is quickly melting (too watery) is nigh on impossible. We gave up in the end and accepted that what should have been a pleasant addition to our beach walk was going to end up as seagull food. We won't be returning. I suspect any apparent popularity is due to there being nowhere else local that sells ice cream and perhaps people are more placated by the good choice on the sweet side.

Someone told me about this ice-cream place and we made a special trip to go there. It is obviously hugely popular as it was queued out of the door. The difficulty is that you don't get to see the flavours and menu until you get to the front and it obviously causes an irritation to the servers when you get to the front and don't know what you want. The girl who served us didnt crack a smile once and sighed repeatedly whilst serving us. This bad customer service was unpleasant and spoiled our experience, and also people are right it is watery. I'm 43, not 5, i'm good with ice-creams, i can't remember the last time i had ice-cream running down my cone, but i did there, by the time we had crossed the road. The flavours were good, but it was too runny. And the customer service is going to turn people off.

I have been here loads of times and I would alway tell people about it as the ice cream is lovely and they have a huge collection of sweets. However we went the other day and they didn't seem to have as many sweets as usual but I don't know if it's just the time of day we went. After spending a bit of money on sweets I went to get ice cream with my other half, the ice cream was lovey it's ashame the member of staff that served us was not. She made us feel very uncomfortable when my other half told her for the third time that we he had asked for chocolate ice cream as well and it was no way to treat a customer I could totally understand if he has shouted at her but all he did was say. Probably won't be going back as left frustrated, sorry

We have been here a few times and every time we are disappointed, as much by the unsmiling staff as anything. The ice creams are ok, nothing to write home about, I just wish they would cheer up a bit, we are your customers after all! Again, we won't be back for some time :(

After reading the reviews on here we were looking forward to our ice cream so much. However we all found the ice cream watery and tasteless even though we all had a different flavour. We stayed in Allonby all week on a half term holiday but never bought a second one .The shop however is very useful as it is the only general store in the place and they have the most amazing variety of old fashioned sweets

Called here whilst visiting as had been recommended! Just came out and was served by possibly THE most unfriendly shop assistant I've ever met in my life!! Didn't speak when we entered the shop, in fact didn't even look up and acknowledge we were there!! Asked for sprinkles on my daughters ice cream n she just mumbled something n plonked them in the counter in a tub! Ice cream was nice but certainly nothing special and the trip was spoilt by the rude and ignorant 2 ladies behind the counter! An older lady with short hair and a younger one! They def need lessons on actually talking to their customers and making them feel welcome, not like it's a chore for them to be there and they don't want your custom! Won't be going back!

Twenty men's in Allonby, Cumbria is not a restaurant but a seaside ice cream shop and convenience store. The wide variety of ice creams are all delicious and a real treat on that seaside visit. In fact people travel from miles away to delight in their creamy taste. I heard how one such visitor was a loving gentleman who brought his terminal ill wife to Twentymen's for her to taste her favourite ice cream she had known as child. The convenience store boasts a wide range of provisions and sweets (candies).

Hi,I visited whilst on my holiday and went to the beach and to my surprise I had left my purse on a bench,so I would just like to say thank you to who ever was kind enough to hand it into twenty mans and the young lady behind the ice cream counter (at twenty mans)who went to all the trouble of ringing the holiday park in which we were staying, got my details and contacted me. I'm so pleased to know there are still honest and very trustworthy people out there,so a big thank you,I can definently recommend the area and I cannot thank you enough for all your help!

This place is always a regular on our trip to Cumbria! The choice of sweets is what keeps us returning but the ice cream comes a close second. Be prepared to queue in the summer but also be prepared for plenty of choice!

My partner was told this place sells "the best ice cream in the world" we were very disappointed both with the member of staff who served us who didn't smile and when we asked what the ice creams were (there was one called something that sounded funky but looked less so) she just stated what we could see on the name. Not helpful. The choice was dismal and the ice cream was melting under the counter! I chose something that was meant to be caramel but resembled water with bits of toffee in. My partner had mint choc chip which was the worst he's ever had. Someone tell me how this is the best in the world? Disappointing element of our holiday thank god our local is better!

This is a seafront general store that sells a range of ice cream flavours. The ice cream is fine and the presentation of the cones for kids is nice but, at the end of the day, it's really nothing special and we did find that, even on a clod day, the ice cream started melting remarkably quickly.

Twentymans is my favourite ice cream shop in the world!! Such a good choice to choose from....not to mention the size of the Allonby Whopper! (if your willing to try this go for it!). With a massive selection of home made sweets as well as being able to pick up some of your shopping I would recommend giving Twentymans a visit. My only issue with the place is that there is a lack of seating near by to sit and enjoy our ice cream (especially with a messy four year old) however it is not a huge issue. Visit Twentymans for an ice cream!

Not as good as i remember. Felt rushed in making my choice. Girl serving was a bit miserable and not very helpful. It was very busy, so i suppose they were also a bit rushed. Would probably go back if i was in the area.

The state of this place continues its sad decline. Standards have dropped significantly since my last visit a couple of months ago. The men's toilets are an absolute disgrace. There's one serviceable cubicle- but the toilet bowl is hanging off the wall and the door lock has been bodged up so many times it barely provides the necessary privacy. The stench from the urinals is so bad - you can tell when the toilet door opens as it wafts into the pub. Not really what you want to be smelling when you're eating and drinking- it's bad enough when you have to go to the toilet . The staff are great but completely up against it as there are so few of them. Dirty glasses pile up on tables untouched. This place is desperate for a makeover. I for one won't be rushing back. I know the beer is cheap but, I'm afraid I'd rather pay "proper pub" prices and have a degree of comfort rather than sit in a what effective looks and smells like a cattle market. Come on 'Spoons. You can do much much better than this.

My husband, myself and our 13 year old son visited The Brasserie two days ago on a Saturday evening. We were able to walk from our cottage accomadation to the Brasserie. On arrival to the venue we were very impressed by the beautiful driveway leading down to the Brasserie. The whole establishment is obviously very well kept with beautiful spring flowers and plants and lovely lighting down the drive. On entering the Brasserie however, we were suprised that the decor didnt appear to match the rest of the hotel. We were approached by a friendly waiter on arrival who took our drinks and food order promptly. He checked we were all ok during the first half of our meal and we felt his interactions with us were appropriate, not too overpowering or disinterested. My husband ordered the mushroom stroganoff. He felt it was quite ordinary and bland. I ordered the brushetta and a side portion of fries. I felt the brushetta was overpriced but the fries were beautiful. My son ordered the pizza which he said was really tasty! During the meal.another member of staff( female) arrived and we have to say it was quite an experience! We had ordered a second round of drinks. I had ordere a lakes gin and a small bottle of fever tree ginger ale to mix it with. I was allowing my son to taste the ginger ale from the bottle. The waitress appeared out of nowhere and snatched the bottle from his hand with a resounding"no!" It shocked us all! We reassured her that this was not an alcoholuc drink. She then commented in quite a rude manner when my husband wiped his nose gently on a napkin and also told us later on during the meal that she was used to working in the " posh restaurant". During our meal she stood over us on several.occasions which we felt was inappropriate and a bit unnerving! We felt she would benefit from some more training from more experienced members of staff. We did realise she was young and and was probably trying to.please (.a little too much). We were very patient with her but felt there may be future guests who may not be quite so tolerant! A little later during the evening my husband and our son went to use the toilet closest to the Brasserie. They came back and both told me there was smashed glass on the floor and a dirty nappy. My husband reported this to a member of staff from the spa team. On leaving the Brasserie we walked through to the hotel reception as we were all so concerned about the state of the toilet and wanted to ensure it had been sorted and the message had got trough. The lady on hotel reception didnt appear to know anything about this but we did see her promptly speaking to another hotel member of staff after our conversation. The only other disappointing part to.our meal was the cheeseboard. It sounded fantastic on the Brasserie menu but when it arrived we were informed that some of the cheeses were not available. The waiter did however add a few extra for us but we felt this could have been mentioned before we went ahead with the order. Sadly it was a disappointing experience as it could be a fabulous setting within the grounds of an obviously gorgeous hotel.

We were staying in Keswick on the first of November 2024 to celebrate two 50th birthday’s. Keswick was extremely busy and four eating establishments we went to couldn’t accommodate our party of seven. However the Lake road inn had vacant tables which was great and now I understand why. It was 2.30pm and the kitchen was closing at 5.00pm so they explained the menu was limited (fair enough). After viewing the limited menu we decided it couldn’t accommodate our party so thought we would have a drink whilst booking another venue on line for an hours time. Ordered a Guinness then a glass of Malbec. No Malbec and then discovered a lot of the ales were unavailable too. We decided this just wasn’t for us and said to the bar it doesn’t matter and left. We were chased across the pub by a member of staff with a card reader to pay for the half Guinness that was settling (the first drink on my order) he said I had to pay as it was wastage? Like nothing ever gets spilt behind the bar??.I reluctantly paid for it and asked for an additional empty half glass in order to share it so we could quickly move on. We moved out side and found the empty half glass was dirty and the Guinness had a black hair in the head. We poured it down the drain. We love Keswick and the people are lovely, friendly and accommodating. So please don’t waste your money at the Lake Road Inn. There are so many better establishments than here!! Avoid!! As a party of seven there for food and drinks we would have spent £200+, so their loss!! We had a lovely meal at the Pack Horse Inn. Lamb burger special was tremendous!!! I highly recommend the Pack horse inn, the pheasant, or the George. I can only hope The lake Road Inn falls into administration and a decent proprietor takes it over. Harsh but fair.
