Turnpike Inn in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Visited today with my Mum & sister, we were very impressed, lovely atmosphere, good service, great food. Expect we will be back again.

Delicious food and lovely atmosphere. Their pie of the day: beef, mushroom and Guinness, was the best pie I’ve had in a long time! And my husband enjoyed his burger which was made with high quality ingredients. Would highly recommend it here!

Always a delightful experience. Good selection of draught beers, which are reasonably priced for this area. All the staff, Including management are polite, efficient and very welcoming. Highly recommend this place.

We were staying locally visiting some family and popped in here on our last night. Such a warm welcome and thanks to the couple of the locals for letting us have their table by the fire, it was much appreciated. Had a couple of drinks each and some food, there was a really good choice of both. Food was delicious. Staff were super helpful and friendly and had a chat with some of the locals too and even got to make a fuss of the lovely dog. Will definitely be back. Thank you.

We have passed this inn a few times, so we decided to give it a try, we were not disappointed at all, very friendly staff, beautiful presented surroundings and delicious food, we will definitely be returning.

You couldn’t get a nicer welcome anywhere! The staff here are so nice, so attentive. The pub is beautifully decorated with a roaring fire, perfect for a winter evening. It was very quiet, only two other tables besides ourselves. We both ordered steak pie. It was absolutely delicious. Light puff pastry lid, crammed to the top with huge chunks of delicious tender steak, plentiful chips, and a portion of fresh green vegetables. Our only gripe was the price. It was £18.00 and we felt that was a little on the high side. The Turnpike has worked hard to improve the pub/restaurant and has succeeded in its appearance as its lovely inside and the staff are fabulous and the food, terrific.

This place is amazing. The staff were fabulous (lovely young lady behind the bar and front of house attentive gentleman). The food was out of this world. They even adapted their normal menu to suit my awkward coeliac disease needs. Having regularly visited Hayle for the past 54 years, I am asking myself, why have I not eaten here before??? Will definitely be back at Easter time to sample something else from their menu!!! 10/10!!. Thank you for making our weekend a little bit special.

Amazing pub, we stayed in Connor Downs for Christmas and visited this pub regularly after our visit amazing visit. Food was unbelievable and the owners and staff were friendly and welcoming.

We had been recommended to come here as we wanted a dog friendly restaurant. There were 4 empty plates.....rib eye steak, Thai fish curry, fish and chips and Aberdeen Angus burger. Great atmosphere, friendly attentive staff. We were in Cornwall visiting family but will happily go to the Turnpike again. Thank you!

Looked lovely from the outside and has by the looks, undergone an extensive refurbishment. However, I arrived at 20:02 (according to my phone) and was told the kitchen stopped at 2000 and was told other businesses that would be serving food. Oh and ST AUSTELL BREWERY.. Of you read this put WiFi in your pubs pls. You own enough of them and make enough profit from your beers and chains. Poor that the only pub that does have WiFi is in Porthleven.

Had a very nice pre Xmas lunch with a group of friends. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Food was served efficiently and was nice and hot. Turkey wasn’t at all dry which was a bonus. Veg served separately.

We were a big table and nothing was too much trouble! The staff were respectfully attentive, friendly and welcoming. Everyone at my table commented on how wonderfully cooked the meat was (we all had carvery), ample choice of veg and the crackling was a particular hit! The children especially enjoyed the desserts 🍨 Will definitely be returning 👍

Very friendly staff , excellent front of house very polite and friendly , we felt relaxed straight away . The specials board had an excellent choice , 3 out of the 5 of us had the specials , I’ve got to say it was above and beyond pub food . The presentation was superb and cooked perfectly with great flavours. You’d be hard pushed to find food cooked to this standard in the area . So a big thank you to the bar staff and the chef for making the evening experience so enjoyable for my mother in laws 83rd birthday. We will definitely be coming Back .

This will be the first place we will book a table on our next visit to Cornwall. Kyle and all the staff make you very welcome and comfortable. Lovely friendly atmosphere. Cleanliness is second to none. The food is out of this world (and we are quite fussy). The Chef is highly accomplished and a lovely man. If you have a carvery on Sundays the Chef serves you and will tell you everything you want to know about where the food is sourced and how it’s cooked. Best carvery ever! Went back again for evening meal four days later. Best a la carte menu ever! Everything is fresh, good quality and the desserts are to die for!

This was a real find for us during our stay in Hayle. We received a very warm welcome from all the staff, the service was great-very attentive without being intrusive. The carvery is brilliant, the food delicious and all piping hot. We aren’t sure when we are coming back to Hayle again but this will be our first port of call when we do! Thanks for having us.

This is one of my favourite spots for a Sunday lunch. The food is always cooked to perfection and full of flavour. Every time I’ve been the service has been amazing and quick.

One of the best, possibly the best carveries I’ve had, each individual dish was done to perfection, the staff were welcoming and very hospitable, great stuff.

We decided to dine here one Thursday evening having read good reviews in TA. We were able to park at the side of the inn and entered the front doors to be greeted by two very friendly gentlemen who ushered us to a table, without any booking, and went through the short menu for us, pointing out that Hake was the special of the day. My wife took the hake whilst I was drawn to the Belly Pork. We took a glass of white wine with the fish and red with the meat. We passed the time waiting for our meal listening to the happy banter between the waiter and other customers. Our meals were very good and we loved the happy atmosphere generated by the attentive staff. Some might find our bill of £68 a little steep but we are resolved to dine here again on our next visit to Hayle.

Perfect location for a relaxed family lunch. Popped in last weekend and greeted by a smiling Ruby who recommended the quietest table for my elderly mum and aunt. Sure enough the next day it was all prepared and our party of 6 had a delicious lunch with friendly service. The place is spotless and nicely furnished, bright and airy and the staff terrific… oh and the food was very good too, plus we were pleased to see a ‘light lunch’ menu enabling smaller portions. I had the light lunch haddock and chips which was excellent and still came with peas and tartare sauce.

We came in on a Wednesday evening, it was packed. As soon as we interacted with the staff we could understand why! The service was so welcoming and attentive, the two gents were running it by themselves and doing a fantastic job. We were presented specials on arrival, the drinks and food were served very quickly and was so tasty. We all scraped the plates clean. It was a very last minute plan and I'm so glad we found this incredible gem.

Very welcoming staff were so kind and helpful, the pub was really clean and well cared for the carvery was lovely only criticism a bit over priced. But on the whole a very pleasant experience....

My this guy, he was sweet. Very good looking. Tall. Handsome. I lost track of him from working at the bar but I hope he comes back soon

We stopped here for lunch. There was plenty of parking. We were warmly welcomed and shown to a table given some menus and ordered some drinks. We both ordered the Aberdeen Angus burgers which were served piping hot and were very tasty and came with real natural onion rings not the horrible mushy ones! Everywhere was spotlessly clean and the service was friendly through out. We would recommend.

We've been a couple of times now with our children. The food is exquisite as is the service. We feel welcome with our children in tow and never rushed. This place is second to none.

We stay at Connor Downs for 3 weeks every year. Today we had our 3rd & sadly final Sunday carvery of this year. I can thoroughly recommend the carvery, You can have some of all meats on offer ( unlike some establishments) & there is plenty of veg on offer too! Also I might add that if you have room & feel like a sweet afterwards , the ginger & lemon cheesecake is to die for - exquisite, tangy lemon with enough ginger to make you sit up & take notice with the addition of blackcurrant to balance it. Excellent! Well done The Tollgate, see you next year.

Visited the turnpike while on a short break in hayle we'd been recommended by a taxi driver on a previous trip too hayle and he was absolutely spot on. The staff are very professional drinks in the bar before being shown to the table.the server was very apologetic that there was no sea food left as they'd been very busy which a good sign the food which we ordered was very good quality.hats off to the chefs.will be rebooking the next time we're in hayle

What a lovely 😍 pub!! Fabulous food, excellent service and the staff, plus the landlord were attentive and friendly. I had the mussels, my husband had the catch of the day. Both dishes were so lovely, we nearly licked our plates clean!! Would definitely eat there again, a much better menu than the Red River Inn up the road. Good value for money.

no nonsence, simple menu, surprisingly good food for a pub off the beaten tourist track, the beef ragu especially had so much real beef in it! burger also very good. serice excellent, a bit old fashioned but good value, very good service. wouldnt think twice to go here again

Had dinner here last Friday. The food was excellent and the service was extremely friendly and helpful. We had a really lovely evening in this pub with friends and family and hope it won’t be too long before we can go there again.

We had a lovely family Sunday carvery. The food was delicious, hot and fresh. The meat was tender, with plenty choice of vegetables. The staff were really attentive and one table went up at a time so there were no long queues so you didn’t feel rushed.

Superb ribeye steak, staff are fantastic, possibly the most helpful I've ever encountered. (Chris went above and beyond). Well worth a visit.

Our family of four went for Sunday tea at 6.30pm. Roast beef and pork or Gammon still being served. We each had something different: Roast pork, gammon, dressed crab, and beef burger with chips. All dishes were very, very good and generous in portion. Drinks too were very good. If you like darker ale, the St. Austell 'Hicks' is great. You pay the going rate, but it's high quality and plenty of it. I would definitely recommend the Turnpike Inn. 😉👌🏼

Outstanding Food! I wasn't quick enough to take pictures of our food and we have left nothing on our plates. I looked for a nice place to take the family for dinner while on holiday, and so lucky we have found this gem. Quick to book a table and been greeted super friendly by the lovely waiter. The atmosphere was magic. The menu had plenty to chose from but not too much, kids menu options also. Once we've orderd it didn't take long for all of our food to arrive, 7 people, 8 dishes and it all looked perfect. We had the catch of the day, a Greek salad, the pork belly, a burger, some artisan bread and more the kids loved the food, us adults were amazed by how good the food was. Honestly an absolute highlight of the holidays this year. Will definitely come back when we're down Cornwall next time and super affordable aswell. I would pick this place out of all restaurants we've ate ever down there so If you're up for a nice meal with or without kids this is the place to go. Thanks again to the staff and the kitchen for making our evening so delightful.

We went on a Thursday evening in August and were one of only three tables dining - so the atmos was a tad on the flat side. But this was amply compensated by the excellent food, as the Thai curry and the cheesecake, in particular, were superb. We ate out every night for a week around Cornwall and Devon, and this was the best meal we had. The bill was at the high end of what I'd be prepared to pay, and I can't say I warmed to our host; but the menu is varied and, all told, it's an experience we would gladly repeat :).

Found this gem on our last day, only wished we’d been sooner! Excellent service and fantastic food … would highly recommend this lovely restaurant. Definitely the best place we’ve been to all week !!

As a family we came here for dinner last night, whilst visiting Cornwall for a week, we returned again this evening for dinner. The food was really nice, wholesome pub food, couldn’t fault it either time. On top of lovely food, the staff were lovely, very accommodating to us very quick service and they remembered us by name the next evening when we returned. The atmosphere is one of a lovely family pub, music was good but also at a volume we could here the songs but they didn’t interrupt the conversation, the kids menu is great with a good range. All in all I wish I could take it home and make it my local! We will probably be back before we leave. Great work to all the staff, very well run pub

Gorgeous pub with lovely staff, particularly the gentleman who went out of his way to make us comfortable. Lovely, tasty food, with the carrot and sweet potato soup being the nicest soup I’ve ever had! Will definitely return next time we are in the area.

Lovely evening spent here the staff were friendly and attentive and the menu had a good selection of dishes. The portions were very large and everyone's food was excellent. Everywhere was clean as well as being a open and airy atmosphere. Would recommend this pub to anyone for a evening out.

We phoned at 8.45 on a Sunday Night for food as our friends had recommended the food We were not let down even though they stopped serving food at 9pm Sunday we were made very welcome. The food was superb the atmosphere was great I have no hesitation in recommending this pub

Hands down - one of the best Sunday roasts I’ve eaten in some time. Host is a lovely bloke who made us feel very welcome. Great beer selection, and the Sunday carvery was just superb. Hats off to the chef! Recommend highly!

We had dinner at the Turnpike Inn twice during our holiday. The food and service were excellent. In particular, we loved the Thai style curry (both the seafood and vegetarian versions) as well as the mussels.

Nice pub close to home. Lovely beer garden.

Just visited and had a superb Sunday Lunch at the The Turnpike Inn on Sunday 23rd June 2024, a sitting for four, excellent choice of meats, Beef, Gammon and Turkey all very high quality along with a delicious selection of vegetables and condiments to match. Top class service from the front of House and the whole team. We wholeheartedly considered the meal to be excellent value for money considering the quality of the ingredients which is certainly evident with the skill of the Kitchen Team and associated front of house service, definitely a class above. Ambience is excellent. Definitely deserves the credit. Do try you if you would like to treat yourself to a first class meal you will not be disappointed. Just please leave room for us on our return which will be very soon.

Absolutely fantastic meal! The vegetarian wellington was delicious! Lovely to see a pub serving multiple vegetarian options that aren't just nut roasts! And served with a excellent array of sides. The carvery had multiple meat options and generous portions. The service was great with very attentive and friendly staff. The decor inside was modern with traditional features while being lovely and bright inside. A wonderful dog friendly pub ensuring the dogs are as looked after as the owners! Would highly recommend.

Excellent all round experience. Best ever carvery meal (Sunday lunch) I’ve ever eaten. Perfectly coked meats (beef, turkey and ham), great Yorkshire puddings and good, fresh selection of vegetables. Good sevice, drinks orders taken and delivered to the table. Not the cheapest but well worth the money (£17.95 per person) and highly recommended.

Popped in here for a drink earlier in the week, thought we would return for a meal on the last night of our holiday. Food was really lovely, service was excellent. We will definitely return on our holiday next year.

My wife had her 66th birthday today and we stopped off at opening time and had the small fish and chips as I only have a third of my stomach and my wife had ham,egg and chips both meals were absolutely brilliant, lovely and fresh, nice and hot, brilliant service and would definitely recommend the Turnpike

We have been twice now for Sunday dinner and the food has been excellent. The staff are lovely and the atmosphere great. If you have children there is also a garden at the back and outdoor seating at the front if you just want to pop in for a drink. I would highly recommend it and will be trying out the weekly menu soon.

Comfortably the best carvery we've had in Cornwall. Lovely meat, loads of tasty veg choices, excellent roasties. The only thing that could possibly be improved is the stuffing, but that's being picky. Friendly, attentive and quick service. Not the cheapest but well worth it!

Booked for Sunday lunch. Table in "the conservatory", which is really a thin porch on the front! No atmosphere! Indoors looked lovely though! Very friendly, helpful staff. Beef tough as old boot! Turkey lovely! Veg very nice! £18.50 pp. Not sure it was worth it!!

Called in on the off chance for Sunday Roast. Very welcoming and friendly. Plated roast, lots of choice. Cooked to perfection. Not the cheapest we had eaten but lovely.

We're so glad we stopped off here. The landlord gives particularly attentive service and there is a nice comfortable feel to the pub. We'll definitely be using the Turnpike whenever we're in the area
