The Thomas Daniell in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Went there with work for Christmas do and the portions were massive! Food was delicious and service was great.

We've been to The Thomas Daniell a few times now and every time the food and service is amazing. Great portion sizes and lovely place to have lunch or dinner!

Went tonight with two friends. Couldn't fault at all. Food was delicious. Had a steak with peppercorn sauce and so pleased sauce was not out of a packet!. Friend had gluten free risotto and loved it. Staff very pleasant and smiley. Will definitely be returning.

I visited with a friend for a special occasion but unfortunately we were let down from start to finish. Our table wasn't ready when we arrived and when we were seated we were in the bar bit. Im sure it's not always as busy, but there were multiple large groups and people having drinks that we could hardly hear each other. The service was so slow. Our table was at 7 and we only got our bread at 8pm. We didn't bother with dessert as it had gone over half an hour since we'd finished our mains and we still had not been asked if we wanted any. When we finally got our mains, the chips were so overdone I had to send them back. The crispy beef was soggy and had far too much chilli (and I like spicy food). The was a sprinkle of rice at the bottom of the dish, which in my opinion wasn't enough. My friend has the fish pie which she said was nice, but it came out with a bowl of peas almost the same size as the pie. Overall we were really disappointed as we expected higher quality service and food. We also wanted a restaurant atmosphere to sit and catch up, so it just left us feeling deflated.

Called in prior to a gig at Hall for Cornwall. It was a Sunday and other menus were taken off so only Sunday lunch was on offer. Sadly when the beef came it very rare, and I had to ask for it be taken back and cooked further. Once returned it was still extremely tough, and the vegetables cold. The staff were extremely polite and attentive until we complained then the attitude towards us changed. Such a shame, maybe if they are only serving roast dinners, diners should be asked how they would like their beef as the word ‘roast’ itself informs me the beef should be cooked a lot longer than beef cold and pink with blood still coming out. The customers preferences should always be considered. Beautiful place but sadly won’t return.

First time back to The Thomas Daniell since it changed hands. Absolutely delicious food. A nice variety on the menu also. The portions will not leave you hungry. The staff was so welcoming and very pleasant. A nice relaxed ambience with background music. Nicely decorated and smart looking staff. I think what would attract us even more to come back on a Friday or Saturday night would be some live entertainment or music. Maybe after everybody’s eaten. I think that would give the place a bit more of a buzz. We highly recommend going to The Thomas Daniell. We really enjoyed it. Definitely will go back again soon.

Was down in Truro to celebrate a birthday and found this great place. It was a very nice pub restaurant, the food and evening couldn't have been better. Definitely worth stopping by if you are in the area.

Firstly, an outstanding Sunday lunch (probably best ever!) and in a lovely environment with friendly staff. 5 star starters and fantastic roast. Thank you so much. We will definitely be back.

Good selection of ales. Friendly staff. Sat outside and they brought the drinks out to us. Slightly more upmarket than your typical boozer, but friendly and inviting!

We thoroughly enjoyed a very relaxed late lunch here before going to a gig at the Hall for Cornwall in the evening. Wanted somewhere offering delicious food mid afternoon and we were delighted with The Thomas Daniell. Great to find a ‘no fuss’ approach to the presentation with the strong emphasis on the actual taste of the food and generous portions, so refreshing! The two of us each chose different things on the menu and we were completely wowed. Visiting at a quiet time during the day we had very attentive service and enjoyed good wines with our meal. Whenever we are in Truro this will definitely be the place for us. Thank you!

As lovers of Sunday roasts, this is definitely one of the best around. With a warm and cozy, yet modern pub vibe, this roast was truly devine. What topped it for us was the beef brisket stuffed Yorkshire puddings. These were really yummy! Lovely place to go with friends and family.

Excellent food and excellent service would recommend it to anyone. A very enjoyable evening. The only disappointment was seeing a dog sat on a table on the outdoor seating where people were eating.

Sunday roast was exceptional, we all had pork scratchings with toffee apple sauce to start then, the roast beef. Service & wine list top drawer. Can’t recommend enough, best roast dinner ever in Cornwall, will definitely be back next time we r in Truro!

I ordered the Fish Pie and was very disappointed - I was expecting a pot pie topped with crisp pastry only to find it had a mashed potato topping. That’s fine I thought, only to find that the mash made up 90% of the pie, with only 3 prawns and a tablespoon of fish. It should be listed as a Potato Pie! I point this out mainly in the hope the chef will take something from my review, as it marred a potentially good dining experience.

Booked this restaurant because the website showed a vegetarian/ vegan menu, they do not offer this anymore. This left half my group scrambling for options. They should not mislead people like this. I ended up with a handful of entree’s. Not what you expect for the price of this restaurant. Very disappointed.

Had one of the most disappointing meals ever here. A fish pie that was basically a bowl full of mashed potato with a couple of small prawns and a cube of fish which I had to work hard to find. Such a shame as the ambience and staff was very good. Won’t be back!

We booked a table to celebrate my husbands birthday. We were served by Jake whose service was exceptional. He went out of his way to ensure everything was perfect for us. His product knowledge was brilliant. The rest of the team were also brilliant but as it was quiet we didn’t have as much interaction with them. We would highly recommend the Thomas Daniel.

Came here for a meal after reading the good reviews, it’s was a terrible meal ‘think they must of been having a bad day! The fish pie was basically mash, the fish and chips was the worst I’ve ever had ‘the waiter said it was cod but had a black bone running down the middle and no taste at all, had to send my sticky toffee dessert back because it was rock hard! Overall very disappointed :( Staff were very friendly and the decor is lovely just a real shame the food lets it down.

Avoid if you are gluten free. The only thing on the menu for Sunday lunch that is gluten free was an olive starter. The waitress was rude and disinterested, and when I asked for the manager another waiter came to our table. There was obviously no one in charge. I’ve been previously for Sunday lunch and was served a roast lunch but today only offered olives. It must be the new chef who just couldn’t give a fig. I will never be backz

Just ate here. 3 boys on bikes heading to Lands End from Exeter. Unreal food and lovely service too. Perfect spot and good portion sizes. Can't complain 👌

We are regulars here dining most Friday nights but during the week we visit other local restaurants in and around Truro but keep coming back to TD’s because we are made to feel so welcome. The menu is limited but that is sensible because what they offer is cooked well and we are always enjoy whatever we select. The key to the success here is the friendly atmosphere that is generated because people are enjoying themselves and are relaxed. Two things count when eating out the food and the service, here the food is on point and the staff are all committed to making you feel special… If your thinking of visiting do not hesitate you will not be disappointed ….

Best Pub and even better is the food. Something Truro has been Waiting for. Friendly, tasty food and a long beer list. Service was exceptional.

Visited the Thomas Daniel with my group and food/service was terrific hence the two star review today. My problem today was with the ill-mannered bartender. Obviously if this is a true observation on my part, and he clearly regards the restaurant and it's customers from a merely negative attitude. I'm not sure on what the bartender name was, but he was on the heavier side of build and wears glasses. In one way to describe this bartender today is to say he had an exaggerated sense of self-importance and superiority and it's a mystery to me how this man could be the face of this restaurant. Overall, disappointed; and not for the lack of service or food.

OMG... what a find! I was losing hope of finding a place that would blow my socks off... well, The Thomas Daniell, has! I had their brisket, and I was blown away with the rich flavours and presentation - or the other way around - I can not recommend this place more highly, just wow!

Staff were friendly and made our dogs feel very welcome. Food and service were excellent. Would highly recommend for a lunch time meal.

Pretty poor experience. Had a table booked at 8pm. Got there about five minutes early and got a drink. Went to the toilet and there was urine all over the toilet floor. They then said our table wasn’t ready because the people there before us were still on desert. Waited for 25 minutes, and weren’t able to sit down. They then offered the two of us to perch on the end of an empty table of six. We bailed and went to Wetherspoons

We visited this fabulous restaurant with our family for dinner. The menu offered plenty of choice for us all. The service was excellent and the waitresses were attentive. I would highly recommend the ribs, chicken and lobster risotto. My partner enjoyed the local beers and my daughters and I had a selection of cocktails. We will return, thank you.

The is a lovely atmospheric spot with super friendly staff and even better food! I had the onion bahjis to start and the ribs for main. By far the tastiest ribs I’ve ever eaten and the portion was more than generous! We all had amazing meals, we cannot wait to come back!

Incredible food; we had Fish & chips, BBQ rips, chicken Madeira, the goan curry the lobster risotto. The food was very tasty and the portions were perfect (the ribs were great for a big appetite too!) 10/10 will go again! We also had a mixture of starters/small plates that were delicious, worth ordering if you can handle a full belly 😆

Visited the Thomas Daniel yesterday 29/06/2024 as it was recommended by some local friends and we had seen some good reviews prior. Unfortunately we were deeply disappointed in the lack of options and items not available on the food menu. The wait on food was ridiculous and it was clear that the staff were stressed. Manager clearly struggling to run a restaurant and was told there had been a change of chef/kitchen. I am afraid we won’t be back soon on our travels. The bar staff did slightly soften the blow with an apology, hence the two stars but we won’t be returning anytime soon. This was a great disappointment.

Disappointing 70th Birthday: Slow Service and Subpar Food at The Thomas Daniell Full Review: We recently visited The Thomas Daniell for a special occasion—a 70th birthday celebration with a party of six. Unfortunately, our experience was far from satisfactory. Menu Availability: A significant issue was that 30% of the menu was unavailable due to "ordering issues." Some of the missing items included flatbread, onion bhaji, buttermilk fried chicken, ribs, fries, custard, and chocolate sauce. Additionally, on their specials menu, they were missing one of the three dishes. In my opinion, many of these could have been sourced elsewhere. For instance, they only had two more orders of oysters left, which was also a starter. This lack of availability was disappointing and poorly communicated. Better transparency from the staff would have been appreciated, especially if they had informed us beforehand about the limited menu. A call to inform us of these issues would have allowed us to make an informed decision about dining there, particularly on such a special occasion. Service and Timing: While the initial wait for our starters was reasonable (20 minutes), the wait for our mains was excessive. When the mains finally arrived, only five out of six dishes were served. The sixth dish, fried fish, arrived nearly 10 minutes later and was clearly half-full, giving the impression it was hastily put together with whatever was left. When we pointed this out to our server, they returned 15 minutes later with a freshly fried fish, starkly contrasting the other three plates of fried fish, which seemed cooked much earlier. Food Quality: The starters, including the beef tacos, were disappointing—the tacos were served cold. Additionally, the Goan curry was disappointing, tasting more like tomato soup, though the fish within it was well-cooked. The rice accompanying the curry seemed like microwave rice, lacking any freshness. The fried fish mains also varied in quality, with the freshly cooked dish highlighting the staleness of the others. The Asian slaw that accompanied the fried fish was merely cut-up vegetables, lacking the expected flavor and dressing. Bartender: On a positive note, the bartender was attentive and recommended some excellent beers. His knowledge and enthusiasm about the drink selection were impressive and added a small highlight to an otherwise disappointing evening. Additionally, he was the person we gave our feedback to, and he was very receptive to our frustrations, which we appreciated. Management and Overall Experience: The most disappointing aspect was the lack of acknowledgment or compensation for the slow service and limited menu options. Despite the presence of the owners, there was no apology or attempt to rectify the situation. This lack of customer care suggests a low standard of service that is unacceptable, particularly for a special occasion. In Conclusion: What should have been a memorable celebration turned into a frustrating experience with subpar food, slow service, and poor management. We won't be returning, and we hope the establishment takes this feedback seriously to improve for future patrons. Truro is a small community, and word of mouth travels fast—unfortunately, our word will not be favorable. Absolutely disappointed.

Absolutely blown away by this place. Went last Friday night with my wife. We had the Brisket steak and the ribs and both dishes were delicious. Outstanding food, brilliant service, and superb atmosphere. Matt from food review club was spot on!

We stumbled upon this place walking into town from our hotel, and boy am I glad we did!! We we're in Truro for 5 nights and ate here 2 of those nights. Superb food and drinks and staff were excellent, couldn't do enough for you. Have no hesitation recommending the Thomas Daniell, it really was outstanding!

Food and services all very good BUT the playlist is absolute rubbish same constant noise This is my third recent visit and twice others have asked for it to be turned down. It shows little thought and imagination. Really needs some TLC to be applied.

Managed to squeeze in a booking on the Saturday evening. Really nice place and ambience Staff were super friendly and attentive during our meal. Had chicken and pavlova. Food was great and a good selection of drinks including local skinners beers. It was a little lively with plenty of drinkers both inside and out too. Will definitely return.

We stayed at the hotel Vara and this place was recommended. I had the sirloin and it was cooked to perfection and was so tender. I followed this up with a chocolate torte, again, perfect. Staff were great, so friendly, polite and courteous. I wish I lived closer as this would be my number 1 choice to eat out.

Made special effort to go for a meal here. It was Not wheelchair friendly. We had to leave having spoken to the manager who reassured us that she will address the issue. We have rebooked & I hope to leave positive reviews.

I had a meal here a week ago and it was really lovely, although not quite enough veggies so we had to order extra. We went again tonight and to be fair there was no fish due to it being bank holiday Monday but we had an early meal and the mussels ran out at 6.30. My mum and husband ordered fish pie, this was literally all mash potato and a tiny bit of fish. We were very polite and told them at the end . The man at the desk was very nice and said he would feed back to the chef what we said. I ordered all I could being a vegetarian which was cauliflower something.. a bit too pricy for what it was (£20) but fairly tasty. I also booked for the dining room but we were given a table in the top bar where there are tall tables , not brilliant t for 80 year old parents I wouldn’t not recommend this place as I have had a good meal here but not brilliant tonight, for a lot of money.

The food and service here is outstanding! A special mention to the desserts! Its refreshing to see an eatery take some care and consideration in to the dessert offering , as well as starters/mains! Not a sticky toffee pud or warm chocolate brownie in sight! Thank goodness! The best dessert selection I’ve seen any where in Cornwall in years! Mains and sides perfect too and the staff make the whole experience that little bit more special. Highly recommend

Amazing roast on Mother’s Day! The meat just melted in your mouth, the yorkie puds had shedded meat in them which made them moist yet crunchy, the veg were out of this world perfection! The gravy and spuds 💯. We had a cocktail too and the service was soo organised, professional and friendly. I would give 6 stars if I could! Soo good we are coming back on Easter Sunday. It’s a one hour drive from where we live! 😃. Well done guys. The whole team are smashing it!!!

Just called in with hubby and our dogs for a couple of drinks and a snack, lovely friendly atmosphere and we can highly recommend the Pork crackling with toffee apple sauce and the Sun dried tomato, onion and feta bread, with roasted carrot hummus, pistachio dukkah.

Visited The Thomas Daniell recently for an evening meal with my partner and was hugely impressed. The new owners have done an exceptional job with all aspects of the restaurant. Service was helpful and attentive without being overbearing, fantastic food and great local beers! Can't wait to revisit on a sunny summer evening and try out the benches out front. Great addition to the Truro scene.

Sunday Roast The roast potatoes were black and obviously re heated from the Sunday lunch menu, the beef was dry as was the Yorkshire pudding. My wife had a fish dish and enjoyed the meal. It was Mother’s Day so I decided not to make a fuss and let her enjoy her meal. Under normal circumstances I would have sent the meal back. Yes I left a £5.00 tip but that was under my wife’s wishes. Very disappointed!

First time here with Mum and brother for Mother’s Day and it was just fabulous. From the warm welcome upon entry to the lovely staff and amazing food, the whole experience was delightful!

My wife and I used to visit here often but it was our first visit since the refurbishment and change of ownership. Firstly, we were greeted by Steve who was amazing throughout our visit. The decor is simply stunning. Very contemporary, clean, light and airy. The food was absolutely first class. We both had the ‘ham, eggs and chips’. This is not ordinary ham, eggs and chips. I will not go into details and spoil the surprise. All I’ll say is: order it and you’ll never order ‘ham, egg and chips’ from anywhere else ever again. The bread and butter pudding was genuinely the best I’ve ever had. It was THAT good!! My wife loved their cocktails (hence why I’m writing this review). Please, please visit The Thomas Daniell, you will be met with the most amazing staff/service in a wonderful environment and genuinely enjoy simply outstanding quality food and drinks. First class all the way.

Amazing difference a change of management can make. We visited in October 2023 and the reception was lukewarm and that is being generous. Tonight was very different. The menu is small and in my experience that means good. We all had different choices and all were pleased. The staff had the balance just right. They’re when you need them, not over bearing and not inattentive. Congratulations on such a turnaround and big thanks to Steve and Archie for just the right level of service and banter. We will be back.

had some new clients in town, went for Lunch and the Thomas Danial great food and wine and the service was fantastic my clients where very impressed that Truro had such great eatery. i would recommend to all that are thinking of going i believe its under new owners looks like they have got it just right.

I went with my family for dinner to celebrate for my brother and my birthday. Lovely atmosphere throughout our dinner. I must say that everything was above and beyond by the staff and oh my goodness the food/drinks were outstandingly amazing and also affordable for a high end place like this. Can’t recommend this place enough!

Saturday lunch with family. Warm friendly welcome on arrival. Really nicely furnished bar and restaurant. All the staff were really attentive without being too much. We had a variety of meals and sides, all reallly very good. Drinks were also great, nice to have a properly dressed Bloody Mary for a change.

We booked ahead for Sunday lunch and it was confirmed that we had reserved a lovely table in the corner of the pub. When we arrived we were seated in the middle of the pub next to a table that had a pet dog with them that was actually sat on a chair at the table. The waitress who was very pleasant came and took our order of 2 roast beef dinners. Before long the food arrived which was well presented and was very tasty. Half way through my dinner I asked our waitress if it was possible to have some more gravey. The young waitress looked embrassed and said yes but its an extra £3. I questioned this, again she said sorry yes it's £3 to which I replied that I would rather leave the food. I was perplexed and quite honestly disappointed that you would charge an extra £3 for some more gravey. Never In all our years of going out for Sunday lunch have we every been charged. Speaking to other friends neither have they. I know people reading this would say its only £3 but it's the sheer audacity that you would charge for it on top of £22 for Sunday.I am utterly disgusted with your choice to charge for extra gravey and would not book again for Sunday roast.

Food was amazing although would have been nice to have let it go down before leaving.. Disappointed by the way we were rushed and asked to leave our table after only there for 1 hour and 15mins. (£100 bill for 2 people) We booked a week in advance 1.30 booking for my friends birthday and by 2.45 we were asked to leave due to another booking needing our seats. Not a great feeling and embarrassing especially when a table next to us (of the same size) were there longer than us! :( *would recommend to check how long your reservation will be.*

Had visited in the past but the recent change of hands and refurb with an excellent menu, stunning service and great buzz is an even better experience than before. Congratulations to Neil and his team. One to revisit ......many times.

This is the perfect antidote to our cold dreary winter! The food was outstanding, the service was a perfect combination of attentive but not obtrusive and there was a warm welcoming atmosphere. Several of us commented on how every little detail has been thoughtfully considered...

We went for there Christmas lunch and omg it was absolutely exquisite and couldn't ask for anything better.

Neil and the team were welcoming, friendly and professional. Their service was exceptional. The food was outstanding, my wife loved the Steak and Betty Stogs pie. The drinks were great and there was no rush throughout the meal. As visitors from San Francisco, while staying in Truro, we have enjoyed everything about Cornwall and especially this Pub/Restaurant. While commenting on the decor, and design aesthetics, the former Mayor was sitting next to us, and so gave us a brief potted history of the pub, awesome. Alf & Ann, and we will go back before we leave for California.

Sunday lunch is incredible, excellent service also considering how busy it was. 100% recommend.

We (4 close friends) enjoyed our Sunday lunch together today and it was FABULOUS! Certainly delicious (3roast beef, 1 roast pork) excellent vegetables, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, crackling, and feeling very full… Then, chocolate tortes and treacle puddings. Add a few cocktails and a bottle of Malbec and we could hardly move. Service was friendly and helpful, atmosphere was cosy, soft lighting and festive without being in your face. So glad my local is SO good and I’ll be returning soon.

Wonderful welcome, great atmosphere, comfortable, fabulous service. Delicious lunch all freshly cooked and hot. Coffee also delicious. Even the water tasted good! Will definitely become a regular.

We have become regulars here and are loathe to promote it too highly as we might have a job getting in. Why? Because it’s the best run restaurant/ bar in Truro and we know because we have tried them all. The food is consistently good...
