Tuckers Takeaway Wells in Mendip

Normally we go to the cheddar shop, we were visiting wells so we thought we will visit the wells shop. The customer service was excellent from Edie she was very friendly and the food was outstanding. Will be coming back here again.

We were in Wells for a visit and decided on a Fish and Chips for our last evening. We got back to our house and found that the sausage was missing. The chips were ok but the fish was so greasy! Overall, not a great experience. We'll be back in Wells, but we won't be coming back to this chippy!

Unfortunately had a bad experience today, I said to my gf let's get tuckers today as she hasn't had it before, they do good burgers and chips. The past year or two I'd get it quite regularly as one of the best burgers for a chip shop i thought, but today what we recieved was a poor excuse for a burger, the beef patty was over cooked, thin and cheap tasting and looking, the bun was cold to the touch as if it had just been taken out the fridge, the lettuce was mainly the white stalk part which added to the wet cold sensation, massive chunks of onion, cheese slice was cold. Won't be going again I'm afraid.. the food used to make up for the poor service. Food went in the bin, waste of £20

Close early if the staff can't be bothered to keep the shop open for the businesses advertised hours. Also, they close when they have "run out of chips"!! They say they take phone orders but frequently take the phone off the hook. The food is good, but it is very disappointing when you can't rely on your local chippy to be open when they say they will be!

I feel for fish and chip takeaways in the modern cost rises and it really shows. Just got a large chips at £4.40 amazing tasting! Crispy outer and soft inner. Reason for my poorer review is staff consistency, went 3 weeks prior and 2 large chips was loads. This time round 2 large chips was questionable portion sizes, to the point I had to ask if this was correct they heard me correctly.

Me and my 3 grandchildren visited this restaurant for the first time. The lady was lovely and friendly, the plates full of food were outstanding

Had to throw the chips away, very very greasy. Small portion size too.

Service was very slow aswell as customers ordering after us getting their food before us (we ordered the same food as the more recent customers had ordered) but besides that the food was rather nice.

Well.....if you're in England you of course have to try the national dish, fish 'n' chips and here in Wells Tuckers is probably the measure of all things. When I opened the box, the first thing I saw were completely limp fries and then the breaded fish underneath. As I said, the fries weren't actually edible.....with a lot of mayo on the side, I "chugged down" a few and then came the fish....breading didn't taste like anything and the fish itself was OK. I'm having a hard time giving a rating now..... because it could be that the English love it that way and no other, but for me it's nothing and it's definitely the last time I'll eat something like that. So very benevolent 3 more stars

though wouldn't quite compare to Yorkshire chippies its easily the best fish and chips in entire south-west. soft but crispy chips, proper fish batter and frying fat, tasty curry sauce and good portion sizes. lovely staff behind the counter too. only possible gripe is that the pickled onions seem to keep getting smaller and smaller

The locals chip shop. Ate in the small restaurant and had cod and chips. Fish was best ever. Bit of a walk from town centre but worth it.

Very busy on a Friday evening! If you're not having something that's ready and waiting be prepared to wait.

Fish cooked to perfection and batter was crispy, light and not greasy. Chips lovely too. Generous portions.

A line out of the door so popular, not very well organised, better off ringing up if possible, l had to wait 10 mins to get served to be told run out of large cod, no haddock and had to wait another 15 mins for plaice, l asked at the door if it was possible just to say l wanted plaice they said too busy sorry, so then of course l am waiting, that's life had to keep my wife happy. The reason they were busy was because the Fish and chips Van in Coxley generator had broken down, sadly that guy had wasted fish.

Collected this evening, after stumbling across them whilst having some work done at Halfords. Good sized portions and piping hot food. Staff were helpful and friendly and the restaurant was nice and clean. Whitstones is equally as nice but, for the convenience and less travel, we'd come here again.

Bought 2 cod & chips 6/12 for £21 which is the going rate and I have got to say they were the worst I have ever had. One portion of fish was almost all batter and very little fish which was very disappointing and the other my wife had was not much better. I for one will not be visiting this establishment again so don't make the same mistake find another.

The chips were lovely and the cod was perfectly cooked, nice crispy batter and not greasy. To eat in was £12.95 for a regular cod, chips and mushy peas, £14.95 for a large. We also had kids meals which they enjoyed and my wife enjoyed the Steak pie and chips. They served the walk ins faster than those eating in and so be sure to factor that into your visit if need to feed children quickly 👍

Best fish and chips iv had so delicious brilliant service highly recommend this place to everyone and certainly will be going back here again excellent a credit to the owners.

So disappointed, the menu states pea fritters, they never have them. If you are not going to provide what is stated please don’t advertise the products. In the last 6 times we have been in only once have we had this delicious treat. We now ask if they are available before ordering and leave disappointed and go elsewhere. Have now given up in despair. Won’t be back, given up. Such a shame.

We had decided that one evening of our trip we'd have fish and chips from a good chippie. We ID'd Tuckers from Google Maps as the pla(i)ce (geddit?). It didn't disappoint.

Go here everytime I'm up Wells way... Tasty sausage and chips... There's also a stairway that goes to nowhere... A metaphor for life, and I think that is class!

The food was good, the chips were well cooked. I had a burger which was good. They still have room for improvement. They use a cheap quality bun with the burger, this could be upgraded to a better quality bun (e.g. a brioche bun) and even create a special secret burger sauce to make them unique. Overall it was good but still room for improvement. They should be open more hours of the day to increase revenue and help the local community better.

Freshly fried haddock and masses of delicious chips. Not quite enough salt and vinegar for my taste so I will keep some salt in the van for next time. Very efficient service. It was Saturday around 6pm and they were pretty busy. A popular chippy.

We stopped here for some fish and chips. Despite not really being open for sit-in dining they let us eat at one of their tables. Pleasant and reasonably cheap eat, and good taste and quantity. A nice find for a wet Monday evening.

Friendly service and delicious food. We shared a popcorn chicken, then I had large battered sausage and chips (with an outstanding curry sauce) and my husband had bacon double cheeseburger and chips. The chips are really nice, quite often I’m disappointed with chip shop chips. Fresh and not at all greasy, perfect!

Had Haddock, chips & mushy peas. Haddock cooked fresh. Only downside, the mushy peas were a bit stodgy but delicious!

The chips were a bit soggy and a lot of them stuck to the bag, I think they need to improve on the way they add salt & vinegar, my portion was a small so not so bad but my partner had a large and a lot of his chips were not as flavourful. The chips were hot even after a 10 minute drive which is great. The Battered sausages & fish are nice here. They always have pea fritters on the board & website but I have asked for one about 5 times over our visits and they never have them available. Maybe we don’t go at the right time for them? Otherwise please take them off your menu. COVID measures no longer in place so you can stand inside the shop to order & wait now. There is a bit of a wait when ordering fish as to be expected as it’s made to order.

Awful service all bar one item boxed up 20 minutes until the last item was ready. Result cold food. Won't be back in a hurry!! Tried again a month later same bad experience and food left to get cold on top of the fryer before ready. This time cancelled the order and got a refund, I'm not paying for cold food. Will never buy from here again as nothing has changed. Shame as I was a customer for at least 20 yrs !

Hit and miss. Sometimes fab but mostly greasy with awful taste. Portion size varies massively so we never know how many chips to get.

Awful greasy fish and chips last night. Had a nasty after taste like dirty oil. Curry sauce was thick and jelly like, barely warm. Not nice at all. Should of returned it.

Being from Yorkshire I know my chips :-) This chippie place needs to understand the science of customer satisfaction. My friend and I ordered one bag of chips with salt and vinegar. Okay, there is a way to do this properly and another way, this chippie chooses the other way. The staff appeared to be all young girls, so maybe they are a little inexperienced when it comes to getting it right. They bag the chips and throw salt and vinegar on top and voila, another happy customer? Not so! A few chips are blathered in salt and vinegar and the rest are devoid of any condiments, and to top it off the chips were quite dry, we both agreed on that. Anyway, we understood that they'd obviously been sitting under the warmer for a while so that can be excused, a little. We went into Tesco's next door and bought some brown sauce to liven them up a little. Anyway, here's a hint to the chippie shop: Before bagging the chips spread them out a little and sprinkle the salt and vinegar equally over the chips and then bag them. That's just simple (Yorkshire) common sense :-)

A bag of chips and a fish in batter. £8,70. No...it wasnt sea bass or caviar! Very greasy fish which was mostly batter, small, and had been in the warmer for quite a while. Maybe the charge was for the long wait in the queue in the rain?
