The Old Bakehouse in Mendip

We met an old chap in the pub, like you do,whilst staying locally to Frome. He recommended this bakery. In particular the bread pudding, see pic, my hand is shown for size comparison! The Nelsons slice, square shaped cake, and we also tried a bakewell tart! All very nice and very reasonably priced. Is cash only though.

I don’t think I’ve ever been in a bakery better than this! The cakes were heavenly, the selection was vast and affordable, and the baker behind the counter made our day. No trip to Frome can be considered complete without a visit to this bakehouse. 10/10, cannot recommend enough.

Now listen up This is a proper cake and bread taster here And This Is The Best Bakery In England! And it’s in my old home town of Frome! With a stream running down the middle of the street ! With the baker making the bread and cakes in front of you (well out the back of the shop ,but you can see him) Fresh stuff comes out oven and straight into your paws Been there at least 50 years was there when I was a kid 45 years ago and it wasn’t a new shop then! All fresh made and sensible pricing Not like new pretend old coffee cake shops which have super high price and not done locally Doughnut for a quid we bought one each fresh out of having jam put in them ,warm doughnuts handmade just perfect We went back for more! Nice little bakery on Cheap Street, friendly guy served us, they had a wide selection of baked goods and very cute frog biscuits! But they are cash only so be prepared!

Best ever lemon meringue pie, Viennese whirls and jam donuts! It’s a good job this place is cash only otherwise I’d be every time I pass by!

Brilliant old school bakers experience with the proprietor serving you. All cash and i bet he serves bakers dozens....worth going out of your way to visit.

Loved the almond pastry and Chelsea bun. Ours kids loved the cookies. Not sure what other people are complaining about but the owners were nice and friendly. Definitely recommend for breakfast or snack.

Bought a couple of pies. Both were picked up BY BARE HANDS (!) and put into a paper bag by the proprietor while the tongs, which he's supposed to use, were lying nearby. Atrocious, poor hygiene practices, especially considering that we're still in COVID times. Reporting the business to the Food Standards Agency. AVOID!!! This business should not be in business selling food to the public.

Great Value for the quantity and quality of their baked goods. 2 Jam Doughnuts, 1 Ring Doughnut, 1 Large Nelson Slice, 1 Chocolate Tiffin and something else for only a little over £5. The quality bests that of others on the high street and the atmosphere from the old architecture and sweet smells, is second to none in the area. The only issue I have ever encountered is not having enough of some treats.

The staff were abrupt & unwelcoming almost as if we were an inconvenience to them wanting to buy something. Apart from this the lemon meringue pie we purchased was inedible & went in the bin, the mince pies were mediocre, not as good as the baked in store offerings from the big supermarkets. It's a shame because the shop looks great & we really wanted to like the place. Sadly it was not to be & we won't be going back.

Cakes were mediocre but the person serving was incredibly rude. Glad the cakes weren't great because we wouldn't want to go back.

I had the BEST donut (apple) of my life today from the The old Bakehouse in Frome. l have'nt tasted a donut this good since the seventies, its how a donut should be, crispy outside coloured in loads of sugar, inside soft fresh dough and a fresh flavoursome apple centre.its not possible to make a better donut. I also had a cherry and coconut tart which was also 5/5.Packed with flavour. This place is amazing and i'm VERY picky on quality, size and taste.

Un sitio precioso. El panadero es un encanto,nos explicó de que estaban hechos los pasteles con una paciencia infinita. El pastel de pasas sultanas tiene su aquel. Las galletas y el cheesecake London ( que no tiene queso) muy buenos. El pan blanco super recomendable. Un abrazo para nuestro amigo el panadero.
