Usually I have been very happy with the cakes and coffee here, always fresh and tasty but Saturday we purchased some doughnuts and it was obvious on first bite that they were stale, at least from the previous day. Little jam also. Disappointed

Just popped into truffles with my 13 week old baby as I had some time on the carpark left after their doctors appointment, and thought I'd quickly try and seize my opportunity for some lunch at 15:30.. literally my first opportunity all day, went round the desk side with buggy as the place was empty other than one person on a laptop in the cafe side and I wanted to look in the widows to choose what I wanted, got my order, went to go and sit down as had a content baby so thought I'd treat myself, and before I even got my bum on a seat I was rudely told that I wasn't allowed to eat in there because I picked my food up as 'take away', they proceeded to tell me that I should have read the signs and that it costs more to sit, spoke to me like I was a complete idiot, I questioned how much does it cost to sit here then and they went off to add it all up, by this point I just wanted to cry over my prawn sandwich and bloody decafe (postpartum emotions kicking in) as I stood there waiting while their only other customer looked over in disbelief... anyway, after being asked if i was "gunna pay or not" fair to say I didn't fancy hanging around after that and left trying to steer my buggy one handed, while baby held my prawn sandwhich and I tried to not spill my coffee on them. So much for community spirit/customer service/be kind and all that crap...

I think truffles food and beverages are top-notch but it saddens me to say a few members of staff seem to have a rather sad persona every time I go for my coffee and I try to stay cheery but they will not even engage in eye contact, let alone a smile. Maybe the staff are going through something tragic? As it doesn’t just seem to be only one of the ladies. I have experienced this many times and I do hope whatever it is that’s troubling them will not continue. I myself will get coffee elsewhere now.

Was totally overwhelmed with the choice of the beautiful cakes on display, that I left with 2 yum yums that looked like they'd been hitting the steroids for the last few days!! Arriving at truffles with two adults and 4 young children we were made to feel like a inconvenience from the off. I do appreciate that it is half term and busy but felt no effort was made to accommodate us even though there were tables. Food came out with a missing salad which was instantly made to be my fault even tho it was ordered and on the receipt. After we had finished I went to pay were a comment was made about I’ll give you the dustpan and brush. We hadn’t even finished clearing up our mess as we know kids make mess. Dinning out with children can be stressful and I felt like extra stress and anxiety was placed upon by one member of staff.

Been going weekly to truffles in steyning for the last 5/6 months spending between £10-£20 each visit for and never had an issue staff have always been helpful and friendly - Unfortunately today due to a rude customer we had a very unpleasant experience. Which was not at all helped by the staff! As we waited patiently outside the woman was so close she was basically touching my auntie?! I thought nothing of it as the pavement can be quite tight- as my auntie and I enter the shop there is a maximum of three people allowed in at any one time ( and there was somebody at the sandwich counter being served there) As we ordered our cakes & lunch the women behind stepped in directly behind us - so we gave her space by moving in further but every time we moved in she closed the gap was still so close that she basically touchy me ! Whilst I was paying she lent forward and even though she had a mask on she was coughing very dramatically - at this point I turned around and asked if she could please give a space she just stared back at me and didn’t move, she shuffled barely an inch and I said no could you please stand back and give us some space. The woman got very snarky and said oh I will just wait outside then shall I. I said if you can’t social distance then maybe you should- The staff gave me a filthy look and said that there was allowed to be three people in the shop not to as it had been the previous weeks- but even so there was no back up from the staff to ask her or remind her about social distancing or it could’ve been in a shop with Covid regulations! Sadly it’s safe to say we won’t be returning due to the lack of respect from the staff. And the fact they’re clearly not in forcing Covid restrictions !

Firstly I should point out that if a place does well I always leave a review so equally when a place is poor I do the same. I can't leave this review re the food as we never managed to have any so the one rating reflects the service. Arrived and waited by a sign that said wait to be seated. The place was fairly empty but took a good five minutes before someone came over. We followed covid rules and sat down. We were given menus and sat there for about 15 minutes. No one bothered to come over and take our order so we got up and left. Even when they saw us going no one came over to ask why we were going or apologize for forgetting us. Just seemed happy to let us go. Less work I guess. Won't bother going back. Went to Victoria sponge down the road where they understand how to treat customers. I could understand it if the place was heaving but only half full at most.

My partner has just brought home two of the most dry, egg and bacon sandwiches from Truffles. We keep trying them as unfortunately they are one of the only breakfast places on a Sunday in Steyning - but EVERY time they disappoint. We asked for lots of butter- there was one side hardly buttered, bread had flour bits all over them and the amount in the sandwich didn’t meet the crusts. What didn’t help is the bacon must of been cooked yesterday as it was the final slice inside the plywood sandwich. The only reason I am writing this as it’s about the 4th time now of disappointing food ( including savouries and sandwiches that are not cheap to purchase) from this particular bakery and it’s not good enough.

Having enjoyed many meals here before we were extremely disappointed this time. We went out of our way to make this visit for afternoon tea on a Sunday afternoon.Don't confuse my comments with their excellent bakery/shop adjacent to the cafe area. Unfortunately, we had sat down o give our order before realising the floor was absolutely filthy. It looked as though nobody had cleaned for more than a day! We sat near the entrance and when we looked closer we realised that no-one had cleaned or vacuumed there either. The young lady who served us was pleasant but unenthusiastic. We had tea/coffee and gateaux - nice but we did not enjoy our surroundings and left as soon as we could. As usual I bought bread. pies and cakes in the shop where I was met with their usual good humour and efficiency. What a contrast!

Both being from out of town, extremely healthy for our age & eating only a plant-based diet these past 5 years or so, we really didn't expect anything more than a nice strong black coffee each, but were happily surprised to find not only were they able to cater for us but we left this lovely little establishment with full tummies and smiles on our faces. Went in for a quick breakfast with my mom. We both had the mini meat breakfast. The shop was so cold I had to put my coat back on! The food came and the plates were ice cold as well as the beans and sausage. The bacon was undercooked and very pale. We were short on time so didn’t send it back. When I went up to pay I said how cold it was. I was told the heating was off! It’s 4 degrees outside...... please heat your plates and make sure the food is hot and well cooked before serving! The trouble with truffles is that all the owners care about is money, if the daughters fancy a job one week then shop managers get moved or forced out, the staff are very over worked and underpaid, tips are worked out in a very strange way so you don't get the tips you are given, and you don't even have to know how to cook to be chucked in the kitchen and told to cook or get out

I would have been more than happy with the snack and coffee if it hadn't been for a rather puzzling pricing issue.... A take away sausage roll £1.60 and in the seated area a reasonable £2.00, 25% mark up. But I had the pork and apple sausage roll, £1.80 take away but £2.75 to eat in, a 52% mark up. When I queried this difference I was told the price was what the till said and that was what was charged, no explanation. So it's the plain sausage roll next time! And to be fair the eat in option does include a bit of salad.

The yolk was hard, sausages poor in quality - a shame given the number of good butchers in the vicinity, bacon cold, plate cold, We regularly go out for breakfast locally at the weekend - and will never return here. It wasn't cheap and frankly I should have returned my plate of food and left. Full marks! The room is nicely decorated and everything clean. The menu is simple but tempting.I had the traditional breakfast without beans. It was ok. If I wanted to be picky I might say that the bacon wasn't to my taste but that would be unfair. The problem is that every third shop in Steyning appears to be a café. Maybe being a well established bakers is sufficient to guarantee enough customers. I don't have the answer but if I was a competitor I would view this as an opportunity.

To which I replied, she maybe but all the food towards the back of the display had been polluted. She had been making sandwiches and was wearing gloves. She did not take them off to make the coffee. Needless to say, the food was all over the coffee cup (to the extent that I had to ask another member of staff for a new lid for it). I'm not sure if they were having an off day or if there were some office politics going on but that have lost a customer as I will not be returning.

The cakes and pastries available at Truffles are really delicious. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a visit. I also like the seasonal variation in pastries and cakes. I would go as far as to say it's so good that you'll definitely return after a first visit!

I have just returned home after one of the best breakfasts I've probably had. This is the first time I have eaten here since the refit and the improvements to the shop have really worked.I was seen promptly and only had to wait about 7mins for my food, it was very well presented and perfectly cooked, the sausages they use now are much better than before. Fantastic service and fantastic food.I will make sure I come back more regularly from now on.Keep up the great work!

Visited here yesterday during work (childminding). It was a nice break for the children and they enjoyed their milkshakes and caramel doughnuts! Loose tea was lovely and got plenty out of it! Contrary to previous reviews, on this experience the tables were clean and the service was good and prompt. Will definitely be revisiting.

Poor service, staff did not respond until asked if we could place our order. Our order was brought to the table on a dirty tray, very weak tea. Staff totally uncaring about my disability and tried to barge pass with an order for the next table. This is my second visit. First was for breakfast. Not the best, although hot and much cleaner. This café is not a patch on Truffles chain managed at Shoreham Airport.

All our food arrived at different times, many of the food appeared uncooked. The service was appalling we where not offered any cutlery until I asked for some. And we where still charged for coffees that where apparently free of charge!! Not visiting again.

My opinion of Truffles has changed now that the decor has been updated and cleaned. It was welcoming and the staff were quick to serve and polite. Definitely a great place to go for light snacks, cakes and coffees.

Stopped off for breakfast while waiting for the shops to open. I had the English with toast and coffee, very good value for money. The service was excellent and the staff were very helpful and friendly. I will return when I am in the area again, the cafe is part of a bakery it's very clean and most welcoming.

Visited for coffee a few weeks after the refit following the television program. Have to say was very impressed with the service, the quality and the new decor. Before it smelt like a greasy spoon and you came out smelling of a greasy spoon but now it is very different. Will definitely be back. Great job

The fare is very simple and very plain. It is associated with the bread and cake shop. Has just been renovated and is now extremely noisey. The seat is very close and uncomfortable. Ok for a coffee and cake

A major refit has occurred and it’s rather nice – apart from the door that needs an auto close system. The wind blows around the tables at some speed. Good food, tea nice, nice people - just what you need on a cold day……apart from an open door.

I recently visited Truffles Steyning and was blown away with the level of service. All of the staff were fantastic but there was one blonde lady that was extremely attentive without being over the top and very happy. I would go back solely for the service, although happily the food was great for cafe food and well priced.

I stopped at this delightful restaurant on a short cut back from Gatwick airport when heading home to the south coast. The coffee and cheese and onion pastry were fantastic, the staff friendly and the restaurant very clean and modern. I think it has recently been refurbished. To take-away, I also bought some Portuguese custard tarts - just like the 'nata' tarts I had eaten while on holiday in Lisborn - really good.

Good cafe that offers the usual bakery stuff but also does a wide selection of breads and cakes which is bigger than most, best place to buy a sticky bun!

We had a really lovely roast dinner here! The service was very friendly and the food was delicious. Before lunch from the carpark we did a 2 hour walk through green meadows and woodland. This pub is a great spot for food and a beautiful countryside walk.

Scruffy interior - not clean. We ordered lunch and sat outside. Was given a box of cutlery condiments with various sauces to carry to our table outside. , the dispenser lid of the mustard was black with ancient sticky dried on mustard and dirt. i told the one member of staff who apologised, took it away, threw it in the bin behind the bar, but did not replace . No salt or pepper. Waited nearly an hour to be served.. food was dumped on our table with no apology. My sea bass was served swimming in oil. No waiting on tables ourside so not easy to complain after such a long wait. Moved inside as we were cold and asked for a coffee - the same one member of staff who was behind the bar as well as serving food, looked shocked and seemed nervous of such a request but agreed to try to make us one coffee and one tea but then came to our table o say she couldn't work the machine - so no hot drinks!! We left and will not be returning.i regretted paying up front for such a poorly cooked and presented and delayed lunch.

The atmosphere was welcoming warm and friendly. The menu was designed to suit everyone’s taste. We both had Stilton and broccoli soup which was very tasty and sufficient as a starter. The haddock and triple cooked chips were devine. The batter was light and tasty. The whole meal was superb and well priced. Sadly the heavens opened, but the bar manager went the extra mile by driving us back to our hotel in the village. What more could you ask for? British hospitality at its best. We certainly didn’t expect such kindness and compassion. Thank you SO much.
