Went to the Crown Inn for a family meal. It was Saturday evening but not too busy. All five of us enjoyed our food, especially three of us that had the Sussex Smokie. The other dishes, as well as the starters were also excellent. The Inn has a traditional country pub atmosphere and the service was good.

We booked a ton at The Crown Inn at Dial Post as was near to a party we were attending and given the very reasonable price, weren’t expecting too much. We therefore couldn’t have been more pleasantly surprised on our arrival. Our room (the wildflower room) was beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean and had a lovely view over the green. However it wasn’t just the room that makes this place a little hidden gem, it’s the staff who were fantastic! We had an issue trying to get a taxi however one of the staff came to our rescue, going above and beyond to save the day and get us to our party! Unfortunately we weren’t here long enough to eat in the restaurant, which looked lovely, however if the food is as good as the rooms and service we received then you’re in for a treat! Many thanks to you all for a superb stay.

Hard times for everyone, including restaurants at the moment, but the constant upselling and money grubbing here was actually quite offensive. How about a fl6 burger with no garnish, charging an extra fl for the gherkin?! How about charging an extra £2 for peas with your £13.50 ham and chips? No? Don't blame you. Having sent me back to get the table number, the barmaid (no there isn't a map at the bar) pointed out that I had to reject a 10, 12.5 or 15% service charge on the card machine. Er, for what exactly? Ordering at the bar? When the food came, they put nothing at all on the burger, and the ham with a garnish of, would you believe, half a cherry tomato and a 2cm leaf of rocket. Actually felt a bit insulting. £45 for two children's meals and a main plus 3 soft drinks. I know times are hard, but come on! To top it off, when they brought out the cutlery and sauces, we were the only table on the garden - but they put them on a different table and told us to get them. All with a rictus grin. Good grief.

We hadn't visited this place in several years, but after seeing positive reviews and its gastropub status, we decided to give it another try today. We booked a Sunday lunch and ordered roast chicken and roast beef. Unfortunately, the food arrived cold, and the roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding seemed frozen and undercooked. When we brought this to the staff's attention, their response felt reluctant, and the meal was replaced with the same lukewarm dishes. There seemed to be little intention or motivation to improve the situation. Honestly, I can cook a better meal at home. Charging £25 and £20 for reheated frozen roast beef and chicken feels excessive, especially when I'm not sure when the chef was actually involved in the preparation.

A lovely pub in a very pleasant setting. Friendly staff who are helpful and obliging. Our table for 5 adults was booked for 12O'clock on a sunny Sunday in August. On arrival, our table was identified to us from the bar. It was in the conservatory area. Our server came to greet us, taking our drinks order and we were left for an acceptable time in order to peruse the Sunday lunch menu. Our drinks arrived and our food order was taken. Between us we ordered, 2 roast beef (one of which was a small), 1 roast pork and 2 roast chicken. These arrived in good time and beautifully presented. Next came the first of two disappointments, hot bowls of vegetables being carried on slippery, heavy wooden boards! Health and safety had obviously not been a consideration to either staff nor guests... We'd ordered the extra cauliflower cheese and red cabbage (£9!), thankfully, as disappointment two - one bowl containing a fantastic selection of 6 veg, but unfortunately just a tablespoon of each to divide between 4 healthy adult appetites plus a pensioner... We ran out after 3 guests had taken limited portions and asked for more, something which the menu says they are happy for you to do, however, the server wasn't certain this was possible and had to go to the kitchen to check(!)... She returned with a smaller bowl of broccoli and carrots, better than nothing but not outstanding and in fact disappointing when to us a Sunday lunch is as much about the vegetables as it is the meat and potatoes... The food otherwise cannot be criticised and was certainly delicious 😋... Pudding selection was excellent, we all had space for one of those, best value for money was the mini cheese and biscuits! Only other comments to make are the seats could do with some extra padding and the conservatory was very warm. Overall not a bad choice of venue but we won't be hurrying back.

A last minute Sunday Roast hunt on a bank holiday weekend... at midday for our reservation, plenty of room and well dressed restaurant and bar areas, comfortable and welcoming. The host team are excellent, they are clearly well practiced and well drilled at delivering excellent food in good time and with a smile... Roast Beef and Roast Pork Belly were both first class choices, accompanied by the usual, special note for the Cauliflower Cheese which was unctuous... Dont usually take dessert after a big roast, but the options were too enticing, Chocolate Fondant and a Sticky Toffee Pudding were superb... we took tea and coffee on the patio area (allowing the table to be cleared for 2nd sitting, hats off to the team and chefs!) to digest and natter... perfect Sunday Lunch. Thank you all.

I booked this place as it was in close proximity to a wedding we were attending so didn't think much of it but we were really impressed! The service was very attentive, we were able to check in a bit early as we were due to be at the wedding all day. The room was really well furnished, comfy & we enjoyed having the luxury of breakfast in bed with our breakfast hamper we ordered in advance, the day after. We could only stay for a quick bite at lunch but the food menu & stay makes us want to come back with our dog and enjoy a little country getaway.

The staff were friendly and welcoming, however a pint of ordinary bitter beer was a staggering £5.50, the most I have ever paid in my lifetime outside of Central London. The beer was in good condition. There were three 'specials' on the menu board, all between an exorbitant £22 and £24; ridiculous! Needless to say we did NOT have lunch. I sincerely hope the owners of this comfortable public house do not price themselves out of business.

The service was excellent too, never had to ask for drinks or wait for anything, staff were super friendly and went above and beyond what one would expect. I've no doubt we will be back again, and I should also point out there were 12 of us there today so even the higher than average number of meals / drinks etc.... was absolutely no issue. I booked a table for my walking group of 13 people and we all had a roast dinner. This is one of the best roasts I have had for a long time. I had the pork belly and it was succulent and the crackling was amazing. We did order a few extra sides so it is on the higher end of costs for a pub roast dinner but I don't mind paying a bit more when the food is as delicious as this. The service was excellent as well, all the roasts were served at the same time and the staff were friendly and helpful. My only criticism is that it would be great if the condiments, like the apple sauce etc could be bought out prior to the roast being served.

We had been recommended to visit this pub for food and so glad we were. After a very long walk we arrived very hungry ◡̈ the pub itself is so cute ….. it’s super old meets super modern and just the perfect level of each. The open fires are such a lovely touch and the drinks on offer were great. We were seated and served really quickly and all staff friendly. The food was incredible- we ordered halloumi salad and a halloumi burger ( usually big meat eaters so this was a strange choice for us that day but the dishes sounded so good) there were so many beautiful flavours that complimented each other and was very well presented. Stopped a The Crown for a early supper on the way home from London as we’d had drinks there on a previous occasion and had heard good things about the food. It was fairly busy for a Friday evening and it felt understaffed. The food, however, was served promptly but really wasn’t that good. My grilled halloumi burger was a ciabatta roll, halved, with a few chopped up tomatoes and green leaves on one half with some mayo, and on the other half, an unattractive chunk of halloumi on top of grilled peppers and pesto. The flat mushroom, which cost an extra £1 was small, dry and unappealing. The pesto and mayo added some flavour but it just wasn’t good over all. There was no finesse to the meal, although the chips were good. My partner had the sirloin burger which he felt was equally poor. The staff were pleasant enough but seemed inexperienced and stretched. Our waitress asked how our meal was but hardly waited to hear the response. Someone more experienced would have picked up that we were not impressed. Had we complained, I don’t think they’d have known how to respond to improve our experience. £50 for a couple of pints, a glass of wine and 2 well below average burgers in a ‘gastro’ pub - I don’t think so! Will we be back? - no!

Stayed here for a couple of nights, the room was wonderfully decorated & immaculate but a couple of things let our stay down. Breakfast is delivered to your door in a hamper & the only option is to sit on the bed & eat it as the room is not big enough to eat elsewhere. The options for breakfast were very limited, small box of cereal, muesli or porridge plus a portion of French stick with a slice of ham, cheese or bread or jam & charged £10. Definitely not value for money. Owner entered bedroom to take away hamper & refill coffee pods & bottles of water but bed was left to us to make ourselves. Disappointed to be paying in excess of £250 & have to make your own bed.

Stayed here for 2 nights last week. The room was very nicely decorated and clean. After a long journey we were looking forwards toa nice drink in the bar, however when we arrived the pub itself was closed !! so we just had water and coffee in our room. The bar opened at 18:00 so we went down for a drink and a meal. I wasn't keen on the choice of ales, didn't like them at all, but that is a personal thing so no issues there. The menu is quite small but the food arrived quickly and was nice. You have to order breakfast at the bar and pay separately for this. Breakfast is delivered to your door in a hamper. The rooms are small as it is an old building and to be honest there is nowhere to properly sit down and take your breakfast so we ended up sitting on the bed. Breakfast cost £10pp. £10 for a bowl of cereals or porridge and a small amount of orange juice along with a piece of bread and butter and jam. Definitely not value for money. Room service was poor, the owner entered our room to replenish the coffee etc which was appreciated. However the bed was left unmade!! Whilst this is a first world problem I agree after paying over £250 for a 2 night stay surely this would be a pre requisite. It wasn't an unpleasant stay but we would not stay here again.

This public house is pleasantly situated just off of the main A24 road in the village of Dial Post in West Sussex. The reviewer visits about four times per year, involving a half hour drive. The establishment has a pleasant ambiance and on the day of the visit the four female staff were friendly and welcoming. However having seen the price a pint of ordinary 4% draft bitter beer go from £4.50 to a whopping and unjustified £5 on my last visit, I was appalled that on my visit today the price of two pints was a staggering £10.40, hugely above prices on the south coast and completely out of order. There was also a salmon dish on the 'specials' board for £19!!! Pubs may be closing nationwide but charging rip-off prices will reduce footfall and NOT cure the problem. It is unlikely we will visit again. Also the toilet in the Gentleman's convenience was not working and it was suggested that they use the Ladies!!! Can you imagine the potential embarrassment? The problem with the flush should have been fixed immediately and a plumber called urgently - photograph attached.

Midweek friends meet for lunch. Freshly cooked meal, well presented and served hot. Menu choices and specials are modest but adequate. Very attentive service. Small character village pub with comfortable conservatory style dining area opposite village green. Dog friendly.

It was a cold day and we visited for a cup of coffee and to see the recently opened pub. The lovely open fire was unlit and there was no atmosphere. For an old pub the decor was not suited to this lovely village pub. Another couple came in and asked for mulled wine, however the pub had none! So December, no fire lit, no mulled wine and staff that were not very engaging. We looked at the food menu and we felt over priced. I’m not surprised it’s closed. Hopefully it will re-open soon with someone with a better strategy.

The atmosphere was welcoming warm and friendly. The menu was designed to suit everyone’s taste. We both had Stilton and broccoli soup which was very tasty and sufficient as a starter. The haddock and triple cooked chips were devine. The batter was light and tasty. The whole meal was superb and well priced. Sadly the heavens opened, but the bar manager went the extra mile by driving us back to our hotel in the village. What more could you ask for? British hospitality at its best. We certainly didn’t expect such kindness and compassion. Thank you SO much.
