Nice little pub for a drink, (didn't have a meal)Be warned no matter what the sign says in the bar to ring the bell 🔔 for service, DON'T as it annoys the barmaid and you will be told off which we found amusing. However we had a good couple of hours in the pub and the beer 🍻 is good 👍👍

Have been a few times also to gig there, we were there a couple of weeks ago, and thanks to the chequers for paying for bands! , they want to become known as a music venue, so folks come along and support the them! It's a great night out, the back room is nice and big for both band and a few punters, and dancing! Nice staff, great location, even parking outside! Come on down!

It's a pretty standard pub-grub menu but all the food is freshly cooked and everything we ordered was delicious and well presented. The beer was well kept and the prices reasonable.

Good basic pub grub, not an exciting menu but everything we had tasted like it was cooked to order & was nice - good quality fish with homemade chips & homemade coleslaw. Desserts were slightly disappointing as only a couple to choose from (it was bank holiday Monday & they'd had a busy weekend apparently) and the Apple pie wasn't homemade. A pub with character & a warm friendly welcome.

Simply in love with this 15th century building. Great location middle of high street. Service was great and staff was very friendly. Atmosphere was quiet, cool with good vibes. Free WiFi, free breakfast, luxury & comfy room, nice drinks made this place outstanding. Oh there's pool table as well and some board games.

Really disappointing Mothers day lunch. Service was awful. We had to ask for menus then, when no one came to take our order, had to ask if we could order. Took over an hour for the food to come and we had 2 little ones with us. We ended up buying bags of crisps because they were so hungry. The beef was 1 thick lump that was tough and unedible, the vegetables were mushy and clearly microwaved and the gravy was cold. Wouldn't go back

Disappointing Sunday lunch - roast potatoes were hard which is always the best part of a roast! Yorkshire puddings a bit burnt. Service started off well but then we sat for ages with our finished plates on the table with several staff coming over but not taking them away! Puddings were below average. The pub was quite quiet for a Sunday lunch which says it all - a few locals in there with one sending back his meal as it was cold. There’s definitely better pubs offering Sunday roast so we won’t be back!

Went for Sunday lunch, we were told which table we had, we ordered drinks, went to the table. The place was empty even though the two ladies behind the bar stated how busy they had been, we arrived at 2pm…just one other table in & finishing their dessert, I doubt they had anyone in their restaurant before us. Sat for a while, no menu brought to us so I got up and got a menu from another empty table. Chose our meals, waited for an order to be taken…no one came, so ordered at the bar. At no point from arriving to choosing our meals were we told it was bar service. When I ordered the meals at the bar all orders were taken with no feedback from the staff that there were issues with the food or the meals we had ordered…great…looking forward to my Sunday lunch! Food arrived, one ordered the three meat roast…it was lovely, second guest ordered the pork belly, but this was the same size of portion to the guest who ordered the three meat roast???? I ordered the roast gammon but it was a gammon steak that on a weeknight I’d normally have with a fried egg & chips, to me roast gammon is sliced off a gammon joint??? Once we got into the meal we asked the waitress where our cauliflower cheese was? She said they run out (was not told this when we ordered). Then we had to ask where our side of pigs in blankets were….10 mins later they arrived. Finally when we were half way through we realised we had no Yorkies……when, for the third time we asked where all the food was that we should have got on our plates was I was told they had been sooooooo busy they had run out of everything…..eventually a plate of Yorkies turned up….1 homemade and 2 Aunt Bessies….Really????? The homemade one was greasy, undercooked and cold. Fortunately we are quite a good a bunch of friends that we just laughed our way through the lunch….until another table arrived for a birthday lunch. When they got their food they were presented with a lovely big bowl of cauliflower cheese! With the staff, loudly, telling them all that they had ‘loads’ of cauliflower cheese. In fact, numerous times! But still to our table….they had run out! Only one of our table choose desert, when it arrived the waitress moved all of our dirty plates away to fit the dessert in….in normal restaurants the main course is cleared even before a pudding is ordered ! Our guest actually finished his dessert before any of the table was cleared. We won’t be returning and can fully understand why, at 2pm the pub was empty. They had not been soooooo busy that they had run out of food, they are just poor and under prepared.

Unfortunately I had the worst roast dinner today that I have ever had in my life I am very sorry to say 🙈 I would not normally say anything however it was so bad that I feel it needs to be said. First of all the staff looked like they did not want to be there and there was no atmosphere whatsoever, we then got our 2 pork belly roast dinners which looked amazing on arrival however when starting ri eat it the pork was not cooked at all and it was actually impossible to eat. I could not get my knife through it where it was so rare. The Yorkshire pudding was not cooked it was still very much like the doe mixture. The gravy was lumpy. As it was impossible to eat it we had no choice but to leave it when paying the £15 I was hoping the lady would ask how was your food however there was no mention. I felt it was not convenient to tell her how poor the food was as there was 2 guests at the bar. This was our first visit today and unfortunately it will be our last. The staff look Like they need cheering up and the chef obviously is not happy as the food was so uncooked there was no love in the place. Very poor experience. I do not normally speak about my experiences as I like buisness to do well however I feel this is important to say as I would hate to see a buisness fail due to lack of love and care

The low ceilings, beams and higgledy-piggledy rooms give this hotel a lovely feel and when the fire is lit on cold days it feels very cosy. Unfortunately meals are somewhat limited, if served at all owing to staffing shortages. There is no wine list and relatively few wines. There is enormous potential here, in the heart of the town, but for now there are better options elsewhere.

Went for Sunday lunch. There was just one lamb left and one beef left, which was fine. The lamb was tough and chewy. The beef was the same. The veg were largely frozen and it showed. Far too many veg varieties, it looked like a few here, a few there, trying to make up a full portion, The roasties were well cooked, but tasted nice. The service was lovely, and our waitress was polite and professional and a pleasure. I guess that the issue here is about having to digest the meat! If as I suspect, you have only a couple of portions left then please don't try to charge for a full meal if its the dregs of the meat! Im a customer and I trusted you! Im not here to soak up your leftovers and pay full price for the last dried up chewy portion.

The Chequer’s website sounded promising. We found the staff pleasant and helpful. The public bar was busy but there were few people in the restaurant for a Saturday night. My veggie burger was underwhelming...a couple of burnt strips of halloumi and a cherry tomato in a small bun...no sign of the tomato salsa mentioned on the menu. Chips were in no way ‘chunky’ as described. The Chequer Burger my partner had was dry and with almost no cheese. Beer was good. Good choice of wine, but mine tasted as though the bottle had been opened for too long. Overall disappointing.

Been here a few times for coffee, really enjoy it as they offer filter coffee. Lovely old building, bit of a warren, but interesting walking through to get to the loo's. Only drawback is that they don't open until 10am, but that might be a pub thing. Would be better (for me) if they opened at 9:30 then I could use it when I come in for the monthly Saturday market.

This was the fifth hotel we stayed in whilst walking the South Downs Way as they had kindly agreed to take delivery of our bags from our baggage company The pub interior décor is typical of this type of town pub, wooden beams etc. The bar area gets very busy with the locals but there is another quieter side of the hotel to the left of the doors as you enter. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the pub serves a number of cask ales of which one was my all-time favourite “Darkstar IPA”. The rooms are a little dated but clean and fairly large. This pub had a very good choice of breakfast with options other than the English usual fry up like eggs benedict and bubble and squeak. The manager was very helpful, friendly and approachable.

Stayed here with a mate for the Goodwood Members' Meeting, the circuit is only 35 mins away. I arrived on the Friday evening for dinner, the bar was very busy with lots of friendly locals, good petrol head chat. I had a double room, large, spotlessly clean, warm and cosy, ample en suite bathroom. My mate had a twin room, similar size and quality. Got back downstairs to eat and drink, well kept beer, mostly Shepherd Neame (no Harveys in Sussex - shame!) I had the chilli one night and a lamb curry the other, both very good home made dishes, good portions, ideal after a day's motor racing in March. We could have had other curries of the week or pie of the week (chicken and chorizo). The staff are as friendly and helpful as their local customers and there's a small car park through the archway to the back of the pub. Failing that there's a decent sized public car park a 100 yds away. One caveat - the bar closes at 12.30 on Friday and Saturday nights and the Friday was St Patrick's Day, if you aren't Irish and want an early night, it might be best to choose a room overlooking the High Street or bring ear plugs! However, a most enjoyable and relaxing stay, I'll definitely be back

I was a disappointed after visiting today. The food wasn't bad but it was very basic. I think it was due to the kitchen running out of food. We all ordered roast beef but the waiter came to let us know they only had chicken left which we all agreed to go for having paid for 3 roast beefs. When the food came it was fine but I was surprised that we were only dished up chicken, 3 large roast potatoes, a large pile of carrots and cabbage. After reading reviews on here we were expecting more vegetables. Seeing as we paid full price for 3 roast beef dinners it was a bit disappointing as we also weren't offered any refund for the simplified meal. I won't visit again.

Have visited this historic pub in the past and enjoyed good food and beer. On this visit, it was noticeable that some areas are looking tired, and there were many tables with uncollected glasses etc. The menu is good, although there was nothing on the specials board. We had a table reserved for 8pm, and ordered the first two courses at the bar. However, when it came to desserts, just after 9pm,the order was taken but we were then told that the kitchen had closed. This gave the unfortunate impression of kitchen staff donning their coats and rushing off without checking whether customers had finished ordering or not. A bit like the "Waldorf Salad" edition of Fawlty Towers! This was a Friday evening, and no excuse for such shoddy treatment. Not encouraged to return. The beer and the food are good, but service is lacking.

There are two main bars with a couple of nooks and crannies. The establishment has plenty of atmosphere with beams a-plenty. There is a good menu and most of the dishes are reasonably priced. However we went there for a light lunch and we were pleased to note that there is a special lunchtime menu that includes 'light bites'. Two of us had the "Large Tiger Prawns" as a starter, glad we only had 6 as the alternative 10 would have filled us up before the main course. Three of us then had "Chilli Con Carne", (noting the disclaimer at the bottom of the menu). This was again excellent. I like Steyning, but had never tried this pub. Popped in on a Sunday evening with a friend. Met with a wall of noise from a group of men chanting/shouting. (No football on the TV as an excuse/reason for this). We went into the snug with our drinks, but could still hear the noise. I think we were the only other people in the pub. Staff occasionally walked passed, but never acknowledged us. I would like to think this was just a bad evening for them. Visited here for a big family meal for Sunday lunch. There was me, my husband, baby daughter, aunt, uncle, great aunt and cousins. We all had starters and mains, I had the pate and toast for starter (very generous portion with a spicy salad) and then a small roast chicken for main (again very generous portion size). Beforehand we had made the pub aware that my aunt has to have a gluten free option for her meal which they catered for. She wanted the soup for her starter but this unfortunately had an ingredient she couldn't eat so she had the pate and toast too but the pub even went out to the shop to buy some gluten free bread for her! Staff were very friendly but we did have to wait a while for our mains but this was understandable as it was a very busy Sunday lunchtime and most of the tables were full. But when the food came it was worth the wait. Only negative was that they didn't have any baby changing facilities. But none of us had a bad word to say about the food and service. I would definitely return again when in Steyning again.

A lovely Sunday roast. The portion sizes were enormous even though the ladies had a small plate. The pub did a choice of Beef and Chicken Roasts as well as other menu items. I had Ham, Eggs and Chips and it was really good. My two daughters had Nachos and again none of us could finish our meals. They even catered for my fussy vegetarian daughter! You could have two courses. I opted for a starter and the pate and toast was again huge with a lovely spicy relish and salad. The others opted for a dessert and the choices were all very nice. We will be visiting again and booking is recommended as it was busy. They have a small car park behind the pub but we managed to park on the high street. it is only 1000 metres from the main high street car park. The staff were friendly and attentive. Lots of choice on the main menu or there is a series of well-stocked specials boards. Would recommend to anyone travelling in the area.

Pleasant looking pub inside and out. I enjoyed a lasagne and garlic bread which was just the right amount for a lunch. Wasn't many places for us all to sit, bench style seating that we all had to squeeze onto. It was lovely to get out of the office and visit somewhere nice in this quant little village.

This is a traditional pub in the centre of Steyning which has a good selection of real ales and also serves good food. They pride themselves on their chillis, doing a Chille con Carne and a vegetarian Four bean chilli. We tried them both and they were very good. Unusually, as well as rice, they were also served with homemade nachos. These were a revelation, puffed up, as they had been fried, they were light and tasty unlike the tasteless triangles they sell in bags.

I thought the barman was remarkably unfrendly it seemed like I was deliberately kept waiting at the bar. Like many Steyning pubs they seem to like to keep it local. Strange to be so close to Brighton yet so provincial..

My partner and I have become regular visitors at the checkers and love the warm atmosphere that we are greeted with. The breakfast first of all is amazing. local produce is used and tastes beautiful. They came out hot and and cooked to perfection. The sun roast was again an amazing plate of good hot food. The meat was a beautiful cut and staff are attentive and very pleasant . Thanks to Richie and the staff who always deliver a warm and friendly pub to enjoy and relax in. Defiantly worth a visit! Kez and daz

My partner and I were tempted in to this pub on Sunday by the £10 for 2 courses roast dinner, we arrived around 1:45 and we could see it was very busy. Our roast dinners took about 45 minutes to arrive by which time we were very hungry!! When we enquired more than once about the delay we were given very little information which did cause some annoyance. The food was very nice and the portion seemed generous despite being badged as small, however I would have liked a vegetarian roast eg nut roast but was told the vegetarian option (bean chilli served with roast veg) had sold out and there was nothing they could offer as an alternative. I requested a plate of vegetables and was told the gravy was not vegetarian, not what I was expecting when they advertise vegetarian option on the Sunday roast menu.By the time we had eaten our roast dinners, 3pm, we no longer wanted a dessert as we had shopping to do before the shops closed at 4. We were offered a £2 discount for this.So I paid £8 for a plate of vegetables without gravy that I waited nearly an hour to eat, with very little in the way of an apology. My main complaint is if I had been told that when I ordered, I would have gone somewhere else which is what I'll be doing in future I'm afraid. If you are a meat eater and you arrive early I expect you will have a much better experience than I did judging by the amount of people eating Sunday lunch here.

We had a Sunday roast here and it was delicious. There was a choice between big and small and the big was enough for 2 people to share and still have left overs. Proper home made roast with lovely gravy, rustic Yorkshire puddings and very good cuts of meat. Prices are very reasonable for the portions and the quality of food. Would definitely recommend this pub for the food.

We often visit Steyning, there are interesting shops. We came on a busy saturday morning. The Chequers is a very old Hotel situated in the main street. The Public Bar is rather 'spit & sawdust' but the saloon bar and restaurant are well laid out and full of atmosphere. The staff are friendly and attentive. We were served excellent tea and coffee with unlimited top-ups. the food was freshly cooked to order. My husband had the full 'english' while I had eggs benedict. They arrived in ample portions and beautifully cooked. My only criticism is that my benedict was served on toast not muffins and did get a bit soggy - still tasted good though and the carved ham was really tasty. We saw some other dishes come out fromn the kitchen and they all looked delicious. We will definitely return.

We booked for our walking group of 14 for lunch. The barman took our orders and they got on with the job without fuss. The food came quickly and tasted really fresh. We were miles away from our cars and my husband had had a fall on the Downs, and started to feel nauseus with delayed shock. He sat outside with a drink to get some air, and what particularly impressed me was the kindness of the barman. He went and checked on him a few times and asked if he could do anything for him. He then offered to call a taxi, arranged it and when he went off duty, he told his colleague to look out for us. His kindness was most comforting.

This pub is a very traditional, the food is good home-cooked pub grub, which is just what you want sometimes. I had the thai crabcakes which were very good, nice and tasty with lots of lemongrass. Ok, the chips are frozen, but they were cooked nicely, and the side salad was lovely with beetroot and interesting tomatoes. For £9.50 this was pretty good. My friend had the burger which was great value and very tasty, the homemade onion rings were scrumptious! The ambiance is nothing special, but for a reasonable meal out this hits the spot.

Having decided to return to The Chequers where family had dined the previous week, we were again served a good meal with generous portions.Gales HSB and London Pride were sampled and both were fresh, clear and lovely tasting. The 4 main courses took around 25 minutes to appear, but this was not unreasonable. Freshly cooked and well presented we had 4 different choices from an extensive menu.No need for puddings, we left well satisfied by an enjoyable lunch. Definitely worth a visit.

The Chequer is located in the heart of Steyning in West Sussex. The building is old with genuine beamed ceilings. I visited with my wife having walked out of a ridiculously expensive country pub just a few miles away. It was Saturday lunchtime and there was a noisy crowd of mature football fans in the main bar getting 'tanked-up' before travelling to Brighton by coach. However they were having fun and did not detract in any way. There was a good choice of draft beers on tap and it was a great pleasure to see a range of beers from the local and excellent dark Star Brewery based at nearby Partridge Green. There is no such thing as a cheap pint in Steyning and so the 'Hophead' was a racy £3.60 per pint. It was however in excellent condition. The price of the meals was reasonable, although some items, such as fish, chips and peas was very expensive at £13.50. However an omlette with a choice of two fillings was £7 and bubble and squeek with garlic bread was £6.45. The meals were well cooked with adequate portions. The garlic bread was forgotten (it eventually turned up) and I was overcharged by £1 but to focus unduly on that would be pedantic. The barman was hardly a little ray of sunshine but then he was busy. This is a fairly busy pub with some atmosphere. It did not set the world alight but overall it was certainly worth four stars and I would visit again if in the area.

Snuck into to Chequers on the off chance as not been there for a couple of years. Excellent roast beef, fantastic kids portions and veggie option was much better than most pubs veggie burger or cold pasta. Friendly service, lovely new garden eating area and gorgeous food. Great to see it is still as good as ever. 10 out of 10!

I make a bit of a habit of Sunday lunches in pubs, and this was the first time I'd had the pleasure of eating in the Chequer Inn. In terms of value for money and quality food, this was one of the best pub roasts I've ever had. Service and amience very good too. Thoroughly recommended.

Hate people smoking in the doorway. Feels stuffy and clicky. There were a lot of groups of people quite noisy and no music. Food was good but huge portions. They didn't have half the stuff on the menu.

A disappointing meal. We returned a year after our first visit when the pub/restaurant was all but full. It was a Saturday evening just like before but this time the Chequer was less than half full. The food we had was overpriced for what we got. In particular the home made pies were small and had burnt tops but they were tasty at least. The service was rather stand off and once the food was put on our table that was the last we saw of any staff. Next year somewhere else methinks!

We booked the snug at the Chequer for a family Sunday roast. Took my husbands Nan along with us and the kids. If you've got a three year old the snug is perfect if your child wants to spend the time you are there sitting on the floor under the table as no one will notice you can't get your kid to sit on a seat! The snug is a little open ended room within the pub. We all had the pork roast which was lovely - pork from a nearby very good butchers with all the trimmings including great roast potatoes and a tasty broccoli in cheese sauce. There was also a really nice spiced apple chutney with the pork which far surpassed an apple sauce. The kids had the traditional Sunday lunch choice of calamari! They were very happy being able to have that over meat and four veg! We all opted for pudding after. The kids for bowls of ice cream, they love ice cream surprise surprise! I had the chocolate brownie it was so good I have sung it's praises to many people since eating it! It was solid rich chocolate dense loveliness. My husband and Nan both had pecan tarts which where also excellent, perfect pastry encasing toasted nuts in sweet syrup perfection. We bought drinks at the bar as we went along and our food bill was so reasonable that we will come for Sunday lunch again and again - this was not the first time we had been and won't be the last.

A lovely old pub which I had never visited before, we visited on a weekday evening to try out the menu. The sharing Nachos are definitely worth a try (and they are not stingy on the portion amount!). When we had decided on the mains we were told they had ran out of a few dishes, I think this should of been something the person at the bar should tell you when they give you the menu? The only downside was that the chips were very overcooked on are visit. But I think I will be visiting this pub another time in the near future!

A good old pub which i have fond memories of, so decided to try it for Sunday lunchTypical hearty food which was good and filling, starter was pate which was a large portion which needed more bread than provided.and main was the 'small' roast which is a great out of the box thinkin option and was plenty All delivered by the first class service by the young team looking after the diners they excelled in customer service which was a re-freshing change and which deserves them a lot of credit

Popped in for a quick bite to eat at lunch time today, reasonable prices, had to wait nearly an hour for food to arrive because our order had been given to someone else. Untrained staff failed to spot their error until I pointed it out to them. When it eventually did arrive, schoolboy waiter almost tipped it in my lap, only because I grabbed the plate was the order saved. There is a fairly hostile bar attached to the place, which I had the misfortune to inadvertantly walk into, whilst looking for the restaurant, and was greeted by some surly types, with the 'wot you doing in ma pub!' look on their faces. There are several other eateries of a much better standard than this place, within a few yards walk.Tip for the Chequer Inn: Get some proper staff and take the time to welcome people, give a hoot about them and the place could sing........

I was excited to arrive into this lovely pub. A couple of friends and I were having a sunday roast dinner! I was really looking forward to it.We waited over 40 minutes to be served. My beef roast, looked nice, BUT the Yorkshire pudding was burnt!! We were to have desert, on the black board were several deserts to choose from, but they only had one left!! Why did they not mark them off?? Then we had desert...Toffee Sticky Pudding...well the cake part was ok, but the sauce tasted like it was burnt too. No desert spoons, so we had to use a soup spoon to eat with....not good.Needless to say, I will NOT return for a meal at this pub.

When you think of a great pub in the high street you think of a friendly welcome, pub-grub menu, and home cooked food. Well it’s all here. Added to that it’s clean, and the food is rather good. Ok it was getting a bit late for lunch as we had wasted 45 minutes down the high street at another place –so it was simple jacket spuds with cheese and coleslaw. Pretty good they were and the beer was excellent. Well done to the team there.

I think with a Sunday roast you either need to concentrate on quantity or quality. The roast at the Chequer Inn was a pretty straightforward offering, but nicely cooked and in a monster portion! Two courses for £14 is great value, I had the sticky toffee pudding which was excellent, nice ice cream too. If you are looking for a gastro-pub type of place then this isn't for you, but if you are nursing a hangover and need a roasted carb assault then try this place. Staff were friendly.

Average pub grub menu and an average little pub - pleasant enough though and very nice staff . . . . Average I say, apart from their 'knee-deep nachos' that is, which are a crazily large portion of tortilla chips, chilli beef, cheese and all the trimmings! We have never seen such a large portion of food for one person - it was verging on the totally obscene and was just the most incredible amount of food - really wasteful actually. My husband, who has a really huge appetite, gave it his very best shot but only managed about a quarter of what was on his plate. And just looking at the sheer volume of food put me off my dinner completely! What we couldn't believe was that he had ordered the smaller portion of Nachos - they do a bigger one 'for sharing'!We enjoyed pleasant starters and drinks, and the service was fine, but all in all nothing to write home about - unless you are addicted to Nachos and plan to take five friends along with you to share them!Steyning is a beautiful little village and well worth a visit.

The Chequer Inn is a proper pub with a great atmosphere and amazingly good value for money food. The staff were very welcoming and the service was great. Thankfully we shared our baked brie starter so that we almost had enough room to finish our very generous main meals. Sadly we did not have room for desert but that also looked great.

The atmosphere was welcoming warm and friendly. The menu was designed to suit everyone’s taste. We both had Stilton and broccoli soup which was very tasty and sufficient as a starter. The haddock and triple cooked chips were devine. The batter was light and tasty. The whole meal was superb and well priced. Sadly the heavens opened, but the bar manager went the extra mile by driving us back to our hotel in the village. What more could you ask for? British hospitality at its best. We certainly didn’t expect such kindness and compassion. Thank you SO much.

I had an excellent night out tonight with the curly hair, long haired, and girl with bun bar tenders. They were friendly and was happy with any request although I was difficult and asked for special requests. They were smily and came over quickly while it was super busy. I understand that their pay probably isn’t the greatest but the service was amazing and showed a ton of passion and showed me a ton of passion to making my Friday the best possible. Will be returning.

It was a cold day and we visited for a cup of coffee and to see the recently opened pub. The lovely open fire was unlit and there was no atmosphere. For an old pub the decor was not suited to this lovely village pub. Another couple came in and asked for mulled wine, however the pub had none! So December, no fire lit, no mulled wine and staff that were not very engaging. We looked at the food menu and we felt over priced. I’m not surprised it’s closed. Hopefully it will re-open soon with someone with a better strategy.
