Actually one of the best Sunday lunches I have ever had, fresh food cooked to perfection with roast beef that melted in your mouth, very accomodating friendly hosts serving a group of 12 friends all at once, thoroughly recommended, beautiful..

Luke warm service and disappointing beer. Ignored at the bar in favour of a couple who had walked in behind me. As soon as I sat down with my “Wainwright” beer (brewed by Carlsberg in Nottingham so about as local as the M25) I was told “that table is reserved from 7.15, just so you know”. It was 6.00. What an attitude towards customers. Luckily I discovered a lovely pub just 5 miles up the road in Dacre where the staff are genuinely friendly, the beer local and varied (not brewed by some faceless multi-national trading on the image of a locally-treasured author, and the food fantastic. My advice: go there instead.

Amazing, is the only way I can start with my review. We stayed at the Troutbeck Inn for the night on the 29th December 2022, upon arrival the owner was amazing, such a lovely warm welcome. The room was amazing, very warm for the time of year, nice and comfortable. Having never been to the area before we asked for some guidance for local walks in the area, again, the host couldn't have been more helpful. Having had a few drinks in the bar and then an amazing meal, I find it hard to understand how some of the reviews say the the meals were awful. The meal was amazing, and very filling. All in all a fantastic stay. We will definitely be returning in the next few months, and would highly recommend anyone staying here, who is wanting a break in the Lake District. Absolutely fantastic, just the break we needed. X

Really nice place, the 2 staff (a couple?) were very friendly, and made to feel welcome right away. Sampled 2 pints of lager (pretty good beer selection) and a beef dinner, all was really good! Good pitstop after a day of hiking up Great Dodd and the surrounding Wainwright's, recommend a visit.

Had a terrible experience, and quite shocked at how many five star reviews there are. We emailed inquiring about a table three weeks before our stay and heard nothing back. Assuming we potentially didn't have a booking we tried to call but after numerous attempts from different phones the pub left the phone off the hook. However with COVID etc we expected they were busy and thought we would try to go down and get a table. At the door, our party was met by an exceptionally rude member of staff who said we couldn't go inside and that there was no booking and they were too busy to answer the phone. We understood asked if we could order take away pizzas and eat them outside with some drinks and she said yes, great problem solved...We returned at 8 when a young waitress brought out our pizzas unfortunately they were about 3 inches wide when we had ordered 12 inches. We asked if it was possible to have them replaced and she returned to the kitchen (we weren't rude or aggressive in anyway). The rude member of staff returns saying the chef was unable to remake the pizzas as he was too busy, the pub from what we could see was empty and the table next to us still hadn't received their meals. The same member of staff told us we had made the young waitress cry and that she was heartbroken, unbeknown to said person one of our friends had seen the young waitress stood outside chatting to the chef no tears in sight, clearly this was a very poor excuse and means to make us feel bad, using a member of staff to guilt trip customers for poor service was the worst part of this whole ordeal. Still we thought we should eat the pizzas and have a couple of drinks this was met once again with, we are too busy to serve drinks outside I will only be able to offer you one round of drinks. I asked why there was only two members of staff on bank holiday weekend in the Lake District to which our pizza were seized and we were asked to leave the pub. I must add we didn't swear, raise our voices or intimidate in anyway, this was confirmed by the table next door. On the way back to our campsite we met a group who said they had been served drinks outside all evening, something about us didn't sit right with the rude waitress who consistanly claimed this is my home, having eaten in various pubs etc over the last 25 years this is the first negative review i have ever written, read in to that what you will...my advice AVOID.

On arrival it all went wrong. The owner, Nikki said we had only booked for two nights even though I had phoned her the day before to confirm our reservation. Lied on more than on occasion. Dirty, poor room. Badly needs refurbishment and updating. The evening meal was good but breakfast was tasteless and poorly cooked. Too many comments about our going in and out of the hotel and movements. Need to back off and let people just enjoy there stay. Would not return or recommend. Plenty of nice places around.

OK.. so there was a bit of a cock up with the reservation (not ours..) but changes were made and we got to eat. Food was excellent- a well executed menu (check out on the website first). Portions were just right, service was attentive without being intrusive. And big points for being the most COVID-19 aware business I’ve come across. Plenty of distance, you’ll feel safe here- clearly this place has management to that manages the safety of staff and customers over profit. We’ll return.

We visited last May. 2019 and had an excellent meal. We are disappointed that the menu was radically changed. Came here as a couple for a Birthday dinner celebration. We pre-booked and were offered the choice of two large wooden tables which seated 4 people. Cutlery is in a large tin in the centre of the table. We had the liver pate as a starter. This was very sloppy. We prefer a more solid pate.We both had the lamb for a main course. This came with cabbage, mange toute and carrots. The lamb came with roasted garlic , roasted potatoes and a cranberry and mint jus. The lamb was too rare for us. If we went again we would ask to get it well done. Service was good and prompt. My wife is gluten free and she was pleased to find that they had several gluten free options for both starters and main meals. I rated this place as superb in 2013 when it was under different management. Eating here is no longer a special occasion.

We have just returned. Booked for a two night stay but stayed one night. Room 4 given. Room was cold on arrival. After owner investigated this, the heating didnt work and was given a portable oil heater. The bathroom heater was cold as bathroom rad didnt work. The shower tray required attention. Very old shower. Very poor water pressure. Pen mark arrow on knob to indicate where to turn it too. The shower constantly overheated and turned off. It either ran extremley hot or cold. The bed was extremley hard and uncomfortable. Poor nights sleep. We cancelled our second night. Initially one of the owners was reluctant to give us a refund but did after speaking to his wife. We have stayed here before and was such a treat unfortunatly a differing atmosphere now. Evening menu is very expensive. On a positive note it was a nice breakfast. I wont be returning

Popped in here after a night walk nearby, after living in Cumbria for 13 years and never been in! Read some other reviews on trip advisor and sounded worth a try. Liked it as soon as we walked in to a friendly welcome, the place is very clean but not posh or fussy, just traditional and well looked after. We're quite fussy eaters, one a meat eater one a veggie, and we both love cooking. For pub food there was a good selection for vegetarians (tasted good too) and meat eaters. Exceptionally friendly staff so a great service, attentive without being imposing. We even got a handmade truffle with the bill, nice touch. There's a dog friendly section of the bar/restaurant which was great for us, and our pooch got a doggie treat when we got our truffles! Thanks - we'll definately be back.

Had a lovely meal here tonight. We are staying at the Whitbarrow Hotel about 5mins drive from the Inn and it only does take-away or "basket food" on a Mon so came here instead. We booked a table but bring a Monday we probably could've just turned up. The inn was lovely and cosy and we got seated really quickly. I'd read that the portions were a decent size so we opted for Main courses only. If I'd been hill walking all day I probably could've justified 2 courses but all we'd done was sit in a car for 4 hours so 1 course was enough! Both our meals were delicious, I had the cod with mushroom risotto and my husband had the sirloin steak both were excellent! Meals was slightly expensive but given the portion sizes we were happy to pay it.The staff were all very pleasant. As we only had 1 course we weren't actually there that long but that was fine with us. It was a great find!

We went here for my 50th Birthday dinner. The food here is always excellent, not cheap but good value for such high quality. It was again this time. So, certainly no complaints about the food. But the welcome was distinctly frosty and the service pretty joyless. Things got off to a bad start: we'd booked for 7pm but one thing led to another and we did not make it to the Inn until 7:30. The lady who met us made it clear that we had been expected at 7pm in such a stern way that we were worried that maybe they had another party coming in booked to take our table later in the evening. We checked: they hadn't. We asked for the wine list, but nobody came to take our wine order until after the starters were served. It was a Friday night and in the course of the evening not many people used the bar area, where we were sat: a couple were finishing when we arrived; another couple came in while we were there, and that was that. The rest of the tables were empty. So, really not much atmosphere. One of the waiters looked like he'd had a really bad day of it too, and it seemed in general like they'd rather we weren't there. It was a sufficiently joyless experience that we found it funny, made a joke of it. The (separate) restaurant area was doing better trade, maybe we'd have had a warmer welcome in there. So, my advice: book for the restaurant not the bar, and make sure you turn up on time.

We went for lunch on Easter Monday. We were the only ones in the bar. The bar lady was in and out, and not interested in any form of small talk. Other would-be guests arrived about 10 minutes after us (just before 1.30pm) but were turned away as the lunch service was finished. We had our salad (absolutely fine) in the silence, and left.Pubs can't help it if trade isn't brisk. On the other hand, turning away two hungry families on a bank holiday lunch period seems bad for business.

The atmosphere was non-existent, however you can hardly blame them for that given the weather outside!I had the pate starter and the steak main course. Although it's fairly clear from the number of 1 and 2 star reviews of this place that the owners like to pick & choose who they encourage as customers, on a snowy winter's night in January we must have just about passed their vetting process and were permitted to book a table for 2 for dinner. Although we wouldn't normally dream of spending £15+ on main courses and almost £6 for desserts for ourselves back at home, the wintry road conditions around our accommodation ruled out travelling elsewhere and so we treated ourselves to an enforced posh-pub dining experience. As a one off treat, I have to admit that our main courses (cod loin and duck) were very enjoyable and their quality & presentation were well worth the additional cost compared to some of the over-priced but less well appointed eateries in the same area of the Northern Lake District. I would find it hard to justify the cost of eating & drinking here each night over an extended stay in the area, however.

My wife and I normally select from the fine dining choices in an area, but as we were vacationing in Keswick for two weeks, we decided to broaden our experiences. Imagine our surprise to discover our best meal far from the usual suspects and at a fraction of the price. The range of the Trip Advisor reviews suggests a hit-or-miss experience, and a local friend had told us the food is always excellent, but that the service can get overwhelmed if too many people arrive unexpectedly, or at once. So we booked dinner for 3 mid-week at an early hour, and had a happy experience. The wait staff were clearly recent arrivals from somewhere on the continent, without prior experience, but we determined to be charmed rather than annoyed. Intentions and effort were good - the rest will come. Glitches included delivering a different Rioja than the one ordered, failure to remember who ordered what, and inexperience with the credit card machine, but the food was great, seating comfortable, and the room interesting. We'll definitely return.

My wife and I both agreed we didn't think there was much difference in taste & presentation between this place and the 3 chimneys on the Isle of Skye. The difference between the 2 restaurants (apart from the setting) is the staff/manager. My mum chose this as a treat for me, hubby and child (4). It is not set up for families, there is no child menu. The lady behind the bar was the most unwelcoming host I've met in a long time, she really needs to put in a bit more effort into her front of house skills, eating out is the whole experience, not just the food. The food was varied, depending on what you ordered. Mum had the chicken which was delicious and had to take some home for a sandwich whereas we had the fish, chips and mushy peas and were left feeling rather under-whelmed. The side salad we ordered for our child was really disappointing and replaced. The desserts were above our £5 limit.

I will have to be hones the ones that got to eat there said the food was very good! But I didn't get to eat there as the welcome we got was poor. If there is more than four of you I would recommend going the Sportsman Inn, a lot more accomodating.

The food was undeniable delicious. Most of the staff were friendly and attentive but the owner (at least, I believe it was the owner/manager) seemed to have a real attitude problem. Perhaps it was a bad day, as it was our only visit as we were passing through. Or perhaps she dislikes cyclists (we had ridden down from the B&B we were staying in). From the start we were not made to feel welcome, we were rushed to order and she was generally sour toward us.It was a shame because the food was so nice.

We stayed at a B&B up the road and walked up here for dinner. Remember to book as it gets busy at weekends. At the end of May, the weather was still a bit cold so we were glad to see the log fire burning away and our table was right beside it. Cosy! A bottle of the house rose got us going. I had the smoked chicken and mango, my wife the smoked salmon roulade. Both good. Then a fillet steak for me and a seafood ragout for her. Both good again. We finished up with three ice creams and the white chocolate tart and couldn't eat another thing. As is often the case in the Lake District, the portions are on the large side and the food hearty. Maybe not "cordon blue" but perfectly acceptable. They openly stated that desserts are "sourced locally" rather than "home made" but they were very nice and the bill, including wine was around £75 for the lot. Recommended if you are in the area and looking for somewhere to have a nice, cosy meal.

Went here with my mum and dad after a lovely day out in Keswick. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. Apparently the food was delicious but neither my mum or dad shared any with me (not happy). Well worth a visit and very dog friendly.

The food was absolutely gorgeous and prepared with precision. Breakfast will set you up for a good day out but you would be foolish not to book the evening meal for your return. It's a very friendly and comfortable place to stay with great access to North Lakes and Southern Scotland with fabulous views. We will be returning without a doubt.

Pleasant welcome, attentive service and excellent food which we felt was reasonably priced. We were served our meal in the bar area which was warm and cosy with a real fire burning. This suited us but for a special meal out a dining room table would be preferable.

The lighting was so poor, none of the 4 of us could see to read the menu and our request to turn up the lighting was met by the owner turning it back down very quickly! Take a torch if you want to eat here. The food is ok and prices are reasonable but certainly no better than at other local pubs. The atmosphere is non existent unless you like eating in a library in silence. The toilets are in dire need of a make over and some tlc and do not in any way fit with the ambience of the rest of the premises. On the plus side, the staff are very welcoming and attentive. The owner however seems to favour 'regulars' and is rather frosty to others. We would not go here again, really was a let down

We visited the Troutbeck Inn on the final night of our 5 night camping trip at the nearby Gill Head Farm. We had initially dismissed it as we'd assumed (for some reason) that it would be no good for food. However we decided to eat out on our last night to avoid any more washing up, and we were pleasantly surprised with how nice the place was and the tempting menu.We ordered 2 starters and 3 mains. The trout main we ordered for our 2yr old daughter was outstanding - the prawns were the tastiest I've tried (had to stop myself from stealing any more) and the fish was cooked perfectly. Both our starters and mains were equally lovely. There was only one minor downside, and that was the abrupt attitude of what we assumed to be the owner. She hurried us out of the main dining room as we were about to sit at an unoccupied table (it was very quiet at that time) informing us that room was fully booked. We didn't see a single reserved sign on any table and it may well have been the case that they were fully booked later on, but her attitude towards us made us feel as though she didn't want us in the main room because of our appearance (we were wearing hiking boots) or the fact we had a 2yr old. Anyway, we sat in the bar area and when ordering, asked whether it would be possible to bring our daughters main course with the starters, so that she wouldn't have to wait to eat. The owner snapped "well, it won't be ready". A simple "I'll see what I can do but I'm afraid it may not be possible" would have sufficed, but she did in the end manage to bring our daughters meal early. As it was bank holiday Monday, we assumed they had had a busy/stressful day and decided not to raise an issue, but her general attitude towards us made us feel very unwelcome and an unwanted disruption to her other duties / guests. The Czech waiter on the other hand was extremely polite and helpful and because of him, and the food, we would return to the Troutbeck Inn when next in the area.

Visited again last week and delighted to find the same owners and staff still there serving wonderful food. Our party of 4 found starters of mussels, pate, tomato with buffalo mozzarella and smoked trout to be excellent choices but mains of pork loin (two), duck and beef bourguigon were even better. We finished with exquisite sweets of sticky toffee pudding, which my husband said had a sauce that tasted like liquid Thornton's toffee, cheesecake and brandysnap basket. Service was attentive despite the restaurant being busy. Will definitely be back.

My boyfriend and i stayed bed and breakfast and ate in the restaurant both nights. The food was amazing! Not a chip in sight, certainly much better than the average meal in any other restaurant or pub nearby. Meals cooked to perfection. The staff are fantastic and very helpful, the atmosphere is just a nice relaxing country pub, everyone was so friendly. I cannot stress how much we enjoyed our stay :-) xx

First of all, if your a vegetarian stay well clear, one starter is V suitable and one main (minus the parmesan). I asked the waitress (presuming the owner) if I could swap the Parmesan for another cheese as Parmesan isn't V suitable, I was told to "do without". All in all this lady wasn't welcoming or helpful! The food was okay, wouldn't say it was £14/15 good but hey ho. I did find something in my meal which to me looked like chicken, my father and brother agreed. The waiter asked the chef who said it was egg. To me it looked nothing like egg, either way no apology was given.Wouldn't return due to the staff

We were staying on the nearby caravan site, and had eaten here about five years a go when it was a typical country pub, with great nosh, lots of laughter and beer rings on the wooden tables. We arrived at bang on 6pm to a empty car park, and got a bit of a surprise when we walked in....very up market, beautifully done, but oh dear....where was the Inn welcome. Despite the open fire crackling away, and the cosy atmosphere, we were made to feel as welcome as a letter from the tax man. The food was lovely, very 'bistro' (salmon on a bed of julienne veg, balsamic jus on the plate decoration etc) but I would have loved a big plate of chips! No other customers came in while we were there. We probably won't return and I'm sure we won't be missed!

Recommended by our B&B hosts, but also the closest, it has a drab little restaurant with a very unadventurous menu though the cooking was adequate. Service was ok but a little indifferent. Not one we will return to.

Visited this restaurant with friends and had a wonderful time. I had read the reviews which made reference to one staff member, believed the manager, being a little unwelcoming so couldn't help but be on the lookout for said person . However we found all staff including the person we thought to be the manager to be extremely courteous, friendly and welcoming which really enhanced our experience. The food was delicious and despite the restaurant being very busy all courses were served in a timely manner and with a smile. We will definitely be going back.

Spent two nights with our 8 month old Westie on his first holiday en route to the Isle of Mull. He behaved impeccably which was a huge relief to us. The Inn asked us if we wanted to reserve dinner places and we did, thankfully as they were full on both nights with residents and visitors which is a good sign. Friendly staff, lovely atmosphere and a great place to stop with your furry friends. Though he did get upset with the roofers who arrived early one morning!!

My family and I were camping at the nearby Gill Head Farm, and decided we wished to eat here, as it's the only pub in walking distance. We arrived at about 7pm on a Friday night (weekend before Easter). The immediate feeling of the place that this was not a typical pub, but an upmarket B&B / restaurant. There were one or two people in the bar, and a couple of diners (certainly not busy). I asked the barman for a menu, explaining we would like to eat here. Rather than welcoming us and showing us to a table, he asked if we had booked, to which we explained we hadn't. He then summoned his manager; a lady (more senior of years) who eyed us up and down, and then explained that there was no space untl 8pm. Clearly she knew an hour's wait with young children was not going to be acceptable for us, so we left. Happily a short drive east up the A66 is Sportsman Inn which was excellent and provided a warm welcome and the sustainance we required.Looks like Troutbeck Inn is Basil Fawlty's wet dream. No kids. No riff raff! We won't be back.

This place was opposite our B and B so was the obvious choice to visit. The food was great and service perfect. They also allowed our dog in the bar area. For those that want more privacy there is the restaurant next room and that is very nice. Same food and menu just better surroundings. The menu is small but high quality with main course ranging from 12 to 17 pounds. However it is booked and perfection and the cuts of meat are obviously locally sourced. The only downside is you need to book a table otherwise you won't get in for tea especially on a Friday and Saturday evening.

I'm surprised that there are still occasional reviews that report poor service or rude behaviour. All I can say is that this is the third visit to this wonderful inn and the service is friendly and helpful, the menu selection varied (which makes choosing the meal difficult!) and the quality of the food is outstanding. The fillet of beef melted in the mouth, and I would always recommend the seafood ragout. The prices are also good; most main courses cost in the region of £14 to £17 and the wines are reasonably priced. The wine list is also interesting; we tried a Tasmanian red wine that was excellent. Most highly recommended!!!!

Called today what must have been the busiest day ever. Had to queue for ages but the coffee tea cakes and flapjack perfect. My reason for five stars were for the young lady behind the counter working alone and so hard (others working behind the scenes preparing and serving orders ) but she smiled and was so courteous she deserved a medal. Only downside at 2.30 running out of items such as scones bacon sandwiches etc but maybe they did not expect the number of customers . Well done

Came in to see a friend and left with a warm contented feeling, the place is warm and cozy and very friendly, but spacious enough to not be overbearing. The food is excellent and it has to be the best burger on the island hands down, it’s huge, full of flavour and seriously tasty, highly recommend the village inn

One of the best pub Sunday lunches we've had in several years. The meat was succulent - and if you can't choose beef or port you can have half and half. The potatoes were crunchily roasted with soft interior. The Yorkshire puddings seemed a step above most pub versions being neither greasy nor, like so many places, perfect roundels straight from a freezer. There wasn't much green veg but the kale - normally not something I like - was salty and well prepared. Great with the beautifully prepared red cabbage. Big shared portion of cauliflower cheese included too, and - on request - extra gravy and really tangy horseradish. Frankly not much to criticise here and the desserts were brilliant too. We had heard someone say that the change of ownership a week or so back had caused a drop in standards but it's hard to believe that it was ever much better than this. Highly recommended.
